ALL MY CHILDREN

SEPTEMBER 9, 2002

PREVIOUSLY ON - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Greenlee: Driver, you're going the wrong way. Let me out of this car! Where are you taking me?

Leo: She's gone.

Brooke: I'm going to be on my way.
Maria: Brooke, wait. We're not finished here.

TODAY’S - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

[Knock on door]
Kendall: Oh, J.R., When are you going to get it through your big, thick, old head --
Chris: Look, I'm sorry to just show up like this, but I just got some news, and I wanted to --
Kendall: Ryan -- Ryan called you? He's coming home?

Trey: Call security. Tell them Vanessa Cortlandt escaped.
Nurse: Mr. Kenyon, I --
Trey: She cannot get away. She's homicidal.

Joe: You're needed in ICU. I'll handle this.
Nurse: Thank you.
Joe: Now calm down.
Trey: Calm down? Are you senile? My mother is missing.
Joe: You'll get an explanation later.
Trey: Where is she, damn it? What did you do to Vanessa Cortlandt?

Greenlee: Did you hear me? Pull over! Where are you taking me? Talk to me!
[Tires screech]
Greenlee: I'm trained in karate, judo, tae kwon -- whatever. I am lethal in a very painful way. Listen, if this is about money, I have --
Leo: I'm after your other assets.

Brooke: I wish there was some way that I could make up for --
Maria: You've been telling me about an accident, and I don't remember much about it.
Edmund: The plane crash?
Maria: But I know I begged you to save my baby. And if it wasn't for you, Brooke --
Brooke: Don't, please.
Maria: No, no, no. No matter what else you've done, you saved my daughter. And for that, I will owe you forever.

Tad: I'm sorry. I apologize. I know it's hard for you to hear what I think of David.
Anna: He didn't tell anyone where Maria was. I mean, if it was more than that --
Tad: How can you doubt it?
Anna: If he had anything to do with Maria’s amnesia or her disappearance, well, I guess it's going to be up to me to make sure he spends time in jail, right?
Tad: I'm going to hold you to that.
Anna: Well, no one outruns justice forever. I will personally see to it that he gets the punishment he deserves.

Aidan: Welcome to hell.

Brooke: After the crash on the plane, I -- I just did what anybody would have done.
Maria: No, that plane was on the edge of a cliff. It was getting ready to go over the edge, and most people would have tried to save themselves. Maddie, Sweet Pea --
Brooke: She's -- she's fine. She's fine.

Maria: Maddie? Hi. Hi, Sweetie. Mommy loves you very much. Mommy loves you very much, Maddie.
Brooke: I'll make sure that she's ok, and I'll come back for you. I promise.
Maria: Just make sure that she's safe, Brooke. Please, keep her safe.
Brooke: That night you gave me your daughter.
Maria: And now you've given her back.

Tad: Anna, I'm telling you, David seemed awfully anxious to get his hands on Maria’s medical records.
Anna: He said she was his patient.
Tad: Yeah, like Roger Smythe? Or Dixie? Or any one of another handful of human guinea pigs the man's worked on?
Anna: Don't forget, I was there. He did save Dixie’s life.
Tad: With a serum that was untested. It could just as easily have killed her.
Jake: And now he claims he saved Maria, too.
Tad: How? And when? You know, I -- and if that's true, then why the sudden case of modesty?
Anna: Well, it's not modesty. He doesn't want to incriminate himself, does he?
Jake: Well, it's too late for him to even think of covering his own tracks. I mean, even a genius like Hayward can't make a human body lie.
Tad: Maria's file. You've already run a battery of tests. Are there any kind of clues in the results?
Jake: Well, I'm still studying them.
Anna: Ok. If anything turns up, you call me at headquarters.
Jake: Will do.
Tad: Look, if it's all right with you, I thought I would start looking into David’s whereabouts after the crash. I assume I’d go after credit cards, phone records. Are there any other paper trails you think I should look into?
Anna: I'm sorry. What?
Tad: Are you sure you're up to this?
Anna: Building a case against my husband?
Tad: Yeah. Let me and Jake do this, ok? I can always work with Derek.
Anna: No. I married David to keep him out of prison, you know. I can't take that back. But I do clean up my messes. I'll make sure he pays for what he's done.

David: All right. So you're a psycho.
Aidan: I'm just well-trained.
David: Trained at what, exactly?
Aidan: Domestic terrorism is my thing, and I do not like the way you treat Anna.
David: So what do you want? You want an apology? I thought you already exacted your revenge.
Aidan: Are you talking about your poor, little hand? Because that was an accident.
David: You kept me out of surgery for weeks because of that! I had some very sick patients affected by that.
Aidan: Oh, yeah, especially you. The only time I've ever seen you act like a human being is when you're more concerned about your hand and your agenda.
David: Yeah, like you really know what that is, right?
Aidan: I know that you have caused Maureen -- Maria -- five years of her life.
David: Well, that's a very interesting way to look at it.
Aidan: Oh, really?
David: Erroneous, yes, but interesting considering I saved her life. I mean, some people might think that I potentially gave her back years.
Aidan: And what about Anna’s life, huh? She loves you. Did you care about hers?
David: Well, what the hell are you going to do?
Aidan: You watch and learn.

Maria: Maddie is a healthy, trusting little girl because of you, Brooke.
Brooke: No. Since you've been gone, Edmund -- he's been a perfect father to both your children, and he's the one who deserves all the credit.
Edmund: Maria's right. If it hadn't been for you, Maddie wouldn't have survived that plane crash.
Brooke: I wish my instincts always served me so well.
Edmund: For what you did, we can't thank you enough. Really, we'll always be grateful.
Brooke: I've overstayed. Forgive me.

Brooke: I'm sorry. Pardon me.
Isabella: Why were you in my daughter's room?
Mateo: Mom, Mom, remember why we're here.
Isabella: To see the daughter I was robbed of for five years.
Jake: Mrs. Santos, Maria needs --
Brooke: Her mother. Your love.
Isabella: Is -- is Maria very sick?
Jake: No, no, actually, we just want to run some more tests.
Isabella: You're not trying to protect me, are you?
Jake: Except for Maria’s memory loss, she's in excellent health.
Mateo: Whatever she said to Sam and Maddie, it's all right. They're very happy. They're too excited to go to sleep, ok?
Jake: They're actually just fine with my dad, and I don't think it's going to take very long. And there's a possibility she may not agree to see you.
Isabella: What?
Mateo: Has she even asked about us yet?
Jake: Well, not yet.
Isabella: Please. You know, she knows she doesn't have to ask.
Jake: Mrs. Santos --
Isabella: Please -- please tell my daughter her mother is here.
Jake: I'll be right back.

Jake: May I interrupt? Maria, your mother and brother are anxious to see you.
Maria: I -- I’m not going to know them.
Edmund: Well, maybe seeing them will help you.
Jake: You set your own pace, Maria. If you're not ready to see them, then I’ll just ask them to wait.
Maria: They've waited long enough.
Jake: Ok. Sit tight.
Maria: Ok, it's Mateo and --
Edmund: Isabella.
Maria: Isabella.
Isabella: Gracias, a dios.
Edmund: Maria this is your brother, Mateo, and your mother.
Mateo: We -- we missed you.
Isabella: Mija.
Maria: I know you.

Tad: Well, I meant what I said. You pick up the phone if there's ever anything I can do.
Anna: Will do.

Maggie: Hi.
Anna: Did you hear all that?
Maggie: I -- I didn't mean to. I was just --
Anna: No, it's fine. There's no gentle way to break that to anyone.
Maggie: Yeah, well, you know my darn pushy cousin. The first family member who ever gave a damn about me. Is he going to jail?
Anna: Oh, Maggie.
Maggie: Come on, just cut to the chase. Is it true?
Anna: Probably.

Aidan: You can't just tear people's lives apart, David, and expect them to carry on as if nothing's ever happened.
David: Aidan, look, I know that you've seen horrors that are beyond most people's imaginations. That would affect anybody. I realize that.
Aidan: Look at you. Is this your infamous bedside manner?
David: No, no, no, no. I'm just saying that -- that posttraumatic stress -- it's a serious but treatable medical condition. It is.
Aidan: And posttraumatic stress is something that I don't have. I am in total, perfect control. I used to think it was brutal circumstances that made people inhuman, but now I’ve learned something. Some people are just born without a conscience.
David: No, no, but that has nothing to do with me. I take my Hippocratic oath very seriously.
Aidan: Oh, the famous oath, "I promise to do no harm."
David: That's right. That's right, because I'm a healer, ok?
Aidan: You have done more harm than good.
David: That's not true! That's not true, Aidan!
Aidan: Fortunately, I'm trained to stop destructive impulses.
David: What are you -- what are you going to do?
Aidan: Evil must be stopped, and I am going to show you how.
David: Wait, wait -- no!

Chris: These -- these your roommate's?
Kendall: They're mine. Richard Fields is my dad. He starred in that one. Have you seen it?
Chris: No. Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get your hopes up about Ryan.
Kendall: Well, it's reflex. You're his father. I see you and I think of Ryan.
Chris: Yeah. Well, look, you know, he's not coming home, Kendall.
Kendall: You've said that twice already. So why are you here?
Chris: I want to talk to you about the fire at Erica’s.
Kendall: Why? Did you know whoever it was torched the place?
Chris: No. No, not yet, but I now know that neither Erica nor Bianca was the target.
Kendall: Well, whew. I am relieved to hear that, let me tell you.
Chris: Kendall, I was. They were after me.
Kendall: What?
Chris: Whoever burned down Erica’s house was after my Proteus files. After they stole them, they burned down the house to cover their tracks.
Kendall: Well, why couldn't your brilliant mind have figured that out before?
Chris: Because up until now, there was no evidence that the files had survived the fire, Kendall.
Kendall: You have evidence?
Chris: Someone is now using the files, the information in those files, to track down Proteus' money.
Kendall: Well, you're finally going to say you're sorry?
Chris: For what?
Kendall: Your stupid spy game cost me Ryan.
Chris: No, no, look, Ryan never believed that you set that fire, Kendall. That's not the reason why he left, and we both know that.
Kendall: But if I hadn't been wrongly accused, then I --
Chris: You would have broken his heart anyway.
Kendall: You used to like me. I don't know what happened, but Erica -- you let Erica’s poison take over.
Chris: Don't -- don't blame Erica. I can draw up my own conclusions just like Ryan did.
Kendall: Well, he was wrong. I never had a chance to explain to him what really happened.
Chris: Well, let me explain something to you, ok, what really happened. The reason why you lost Ryan, Kendall, was because you betrayed him. Now, you have nobody to blame for that but yourself. End of story.

Trey: If my mother's not being tested, where is she? I was told I would get some sort of explanation.
Nurse: If I knew, I would tell you, but I don’t.
Joe: Now, listen to me. You must stop harassing the staff or I will call security.
Trey: Nobody is telling me anything. Where is my mother? Why can't I get a straight answer out of anyone?
Joe: If you want straight answers, talk to Chris Stamp.
Trey: I'm talking to you! Stop stonewalling me!
Joe: I've told you all I can. Talk to Stamp. He will fill you in.

Leo: Stealing you away seemed romantic.
Greenlee: Leo, think. I'm a trust fund baby. I've been afraid of being snatched ever since I was in diapers, and I was kidnapped less than a year ago.
Leo: By boat.
Greenlee: Well, so being abducted by car should be a hoot? I mean, I thought I was headed for a landfill. Freaked me out.
Leo: Ok, I'm sorry. I guess -- I guess I was looking for a way to keep our marriage from getting stale.
Greenlee: Why? Our marriage is great. What is going on with you?
Leo: I'm being spontaneous.
Greenlee: No, you're not. You're being a weirdo. Tell me why.
Leo: Could we just talk later? After I convince you that you're not sorry you married me?
[Phone rings]
Leo: That's me.
Greenlee: I know.

Leo: Hello?
Trey: Vanessa's still missing.
Leo: What did the police say?
Trey: No one called the police.
Leo: What?
Trey: Look, something's going down. Vanessa's guard has disappeared, and she's gone, too.
Greenlee: Oh, God. No.
Leo: Keep me posted.

Greenlee: She is Freddy Krueger, back for 13 sequels. Leo.
Leo: Baby, it's ok. You're safe.
Greenlee: There is no safe from Vanessa.
Leo: Yes, there is. Greenlee, there's me, ok? No matter what, no matter who, I'm going to protect you.
Leo: Remember what Vanessa’s doctor said?
Greenlee: That your mother comes back from the dead without medical explanation?
Leo: Vanessa, this new personality -- the kinder, gentler one -- the doctors say that this is the real deal, Greenlee.
Greenlee: Yeah, and doctors used to think leeches heal. Leo, I know the real Vanessa. I have felt her knife at my throat. I have been up close and personal with her drowning techniques.
Leo: I swear to you on my life that she's never going to get close to you again, Greenlee. I'll do --
Greenlee: What, scare the conditioner out of my hair? Go so far as to kidnap me?
Leo: That was an idea that I had. I'm sorry I ran with it. Excuse me.
Greenlee: You know what this means, don't you? As desperate as you are to think that there's this gentler side of your mother, you don't buy it.
Leo: She's my mom. I've got to hope that somewhere inside that there's a person worth saving, Greens.
Greenlee: You're not taking any chances, though, are you?
Leo: Not with you.
Greenlee: Is the tank full?
Leo: I'm not a complete idiot, of course.
Greenlee: Hand over the keys, big guy.
Leo: What?
Greenlee: Well, you want to keep this interesting, don't you?
Leo: Yeah, it's what I live for.
Greenlee: Me, too. That's why it's my turn to kidnap you.

Kendall: Listen, I am really exhausted. Can we play "bash Kendall" another day, please?
Chris: Kendall, look, I didn't come here to do that. Whoever burned down Erica’s house -- they're still out there.
Kendall: I know that.
Chris: Look, your lighter was found at the scene of the crime, which means you were set up.
Kendall: More old news, Stamp.
Chris: Can you think of when you might have noticed it was missing?
Kendall: Maybe if you had asked me the night of the fire, if you hadn't been so gung-ho to nail Erica’s hated spawn --
Chris: I need you to start thinking about who had access to your apartment, who had access to your purse, who had access to your lighter. I mean, give me something to work with.
Trey: Don't answer that.
Chris: Why not?
Trey: I'm still your lawyer, and I advise you to remember how close this man came to ruining your life. Don't give him another shot.

Isabella: You remember me?
Maria: Just the other day before the wedding. And you were in the mausoleum and you were talking to Maria.
Isabella: My beloved first-born. Maria.
Maria: You said that there was a hollow part in your heart that nothing could fill.
Isabella: Only you. For years, my world's been so dark.
Maria: And you're Mateo, right?
Mateo: Your brother. Your only brother.
Isabella: And God used Mateo’s baby son Lorenzo to bring you back to us.
Jake: Listen, I think that's enough for one day -- for Maria to absorb all this.
Isabella: No, no, please --
Mateo: Mom --
Isabella: Please --
Mateo: Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, I promise we'll come back, ok? Ok? When Maria’s ready, we'll come back.
Isabella: Ok. Ok.
Mateo: Let's go.
Isabella: Edmund will take good care of you, like always.
Maria: Thank you for -- thank you for coming.
Isabella: God has answered my prayers. Now I know nothing is impossible. Te quiero.

Edmund: Nothing.
Maria: I don't remember my mother or my brother or my children, and I don't remember you. You're all strangers to me.

Maggie: I'm sorry, but you cannot be right about David. And if -- you should be doing everything in your power to clear him.
Anna: But he knew that Maria didn't die in that plane crash. He didn't tell anyone for years.
Maggie: Well, he must have had a good reason.
Anna: What, to keep a woman away from her family? What reason would that be, Maggie?
Maggie: I don't know.
Anna: There isn't one.
Maggie: Did you tell him that you're pregnant?
Anna: No. And I'm counting on you to keep that to yourself. I haven't decided what I’m going to do.
Maggie: Are you saying that you're not going to have the baby?
Anna: I don't know. I don't know.
Maggie: Well, I'm going to go. I have --
Anna: Maggie, I think you should wait before you talk to him about Maria.
Maggie: No, I need to understand. Actually, I need him -- I need him to explain to me right now.

Anna: Hey, Brooke. Hi.
Brooke: I'm out of words.
Anna: Please, please -- I'm so sorry. I'm so extraordinarily sorry for this. It's --
Brooke: You?
Anna: Well, yes -- my husband. If he wasn't the man he is, if he had told everyone about Maria five years ago --
Brooke: I wouldn't have made the biggest mistake of my life?
Anna: Something like that.
Brooke: You can blame David for a lot, but not for my crimes. You should save your pity for somebody who deserves it.

David: You're as sick as the militants you go after.
Aidan: The technique is called fear compliance.
David: Fear compliance, huh? I should have known that you were nothing but bluster.
Aidan: So would you like me to upgrade you, hmm? To pain compliance?
David: You don't have the guts.
Aidan: Don't even try and save face, David. You go home, you pack fast, and you disappear.
David: Oh, yeah? Well, what was that supposed to be, a threat, huh? You listen to me. I will leave town if Anna wants me to, ok? Not because her nephew threatened me to leave town.
Aidan: You even think about showing your face and getting back into Anna’s life, ok, and you will regret it because I intend to be very protective.
David: I will never forgive you for this, Aidan, ok? I'll never forget it.
Aidan: Yeah, you better not, David -- Doctor -- otherwise you will regret it.

Greenlee: Leo, come on. Safety first.
Leo: Love first, foremost, and always.
Greenlee: Leo, Leo, if you don't stop --
Leo: You'll what? What are you going to do?
Greenlee: Remember, you asked for it.
[Tires screech]

Kendall: Relax, Trey. Relax. Chris isn't after me. He's back on the Proteus case. He's linked it to the fire at Erica’s.
Trey: That's funny.
Chris: Really? How do you figure?
Trey: Well, Vanessa Cortlandt escaped again.
Chris: Mm-hmm.
Trey: If Proteus is your game, why don't you and your FBI agent buddies go find her?
Chris: Hmm. I can see where her whereabouts would interest you on a number of levels.
Trey: She's my mother. And Joe Martin told me you know where she is.
Chris: Mrs. Cortlandt is being held under federal warrant as a material witness.
Trey: Oh. Even though she's mentally incompetent?
Chris: Well, it's just not for your mother's protection, counselor. You see, we're not willing to jeopardize an entire hospital and risk a hostage situation because, as I told Kendall, whoever burned down Erica’s house obviously wasn't concerned about a loss of life. You catch my drift, counselor?
Trey: It's a fascinating theory.
Chris: Oh, it's a hell of a lot more than that. Oh, and by the way, I am back on the job. I need you to start thinking about who might have had access to your lighter.
Kendall: Ok, I'll rack my brain.
Chris: You'll rack your brain, huh? You think this is a game? Understand something -- you were set up to take the rap for arson, for possible murder. You were offered up as a sacrificial lamb. You remember that, Kendall!
Kendall: Ok, I will.
Chris: I'll tell your mother you're worried about her.

[Knock on door]
David: Maggie.
Maggie: So, heading for the hills?
David: You've heard.
Maggie: Yeah, well, everyone else's side.
David: You care about mine? I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Maggie: So the whole mess isn't really your fault?
David: I did what I had to do, Maggie, and I stand by it.
Maggie: Even when no one's standing by you?

Jake: Mrs. Santos, I know that this must be very painful for you. But you need to place yourself --
Mateo: We need to face the facts, Jake. What are they? Maria won't ever remember us, will she? Won't ever feel anything for her family again?
Jake: I'm sorry, but we can't answer that.
Aidan: Is there any chance of seeing Maria?
Jake: Aidan, she's been through a lot today, but I’ll ask her for you.
Isabella: Who are you?
Aidan: The name's Aidan. Aidan Devane. For you.
Isabella: What? What? Maria -- Maria’s husband, my son-in-law, leaves so that you can go in and be alone with her?
Aidan: Ma'am --
Isabella: Who -- do you know this man? Do you know what he's up to with Maria?

[Greenlee laughs]
[Tap on window]
Man: Knock it off, you two! You're busted!

Trey: Man. Haven't you had it with this smug, righteous --
Kendall: All right, why are you all riled up? I'm dying to know who set me up.
Trey: Don't you dare help Chris Stamp. You've had enough trouble over this already. Cut your losses.
Kendall: Like you care.
Trey: Well, I do.
Kendall: Thanks. I guess.
Trey: I'm going to go take a shower.
Kendall: Yeah, cooling off is a good idea.

[Kendall remembers]
Trey: They found a cigarette lighter just like yours at the scene of the crime. It was under all the ashes. How do I explain that? The cops claim it was yours. They found it all charred and mangled in the rubble, but they could identify it.
Kendall: Well, they're wrong. My lighter is still in my purse, and it's not all charred and mangled because it was nowhere near that fire. Look into my purse right now, you'll see it's still there.
Trey: I already did that. I went through all your personal belongings. It wasn't there.
Kendall: Well, that's impossible. Look through it again.
Trey: There was no lighter, Kendall.
Kendall: Well, then I’m being set up. Someone is doing this to make me look guilty.
Trey: You know, the persecution defense -- you're not making this any easier on yourself.

Kendall: Oh, my God. It was you, Trey. There was no lighter in my purse because you took it. You set me up.

David: I don't give a damn if anyone knows my side.
Maggie: Not even Anna? Well, that puts a whole new sp on the whole "family value" lectures you used to give me.
David: I'm sorry, Maggie, for letting you down. Really. I wanted to be a cousin/father/friend to you. I did.
Maggie: Yeah, I know.
David: Maggie, I have a purpose, a destiny, and I'm sorry if remaining true to that sometimes costs me.
Maggie: If you only knew what -- oh, God.
David: I got to go. Ok?
Maggie: David, wait.
David: Maggie, I can't be who you want me to be. I can't seem to be who I want to be, only who I am. Do me a favor, all right?
Maggie: What?
David: Take care of Anna, please?
Maggie: Sure.
David: Thank you.

Edmund: This is -- this is Maria’s friend right now. Right now she needs --
Isabella: Her husband.
Edmund: Someone she can trust, and for the moment, that's him.

Aidan: Hey.
Maria: Oh, thank God it's you.
Aidan: Oh, come on. Nothing's better than seeing your kids.
Maria: No, you were my only familiar face all day, and I -- I feel so lost, Aidan.
Aidan: That's because it's new.
Maria: It's just all these people -- they are so desperate, and they're aching for me to feel something. They're desperate for love that I don't have for them.
Aidan: You know what you need?
Maria: Yeah, to get out of here.
Aidan: You need to take a few deep breaths, relax, and sleep.
Maria: Yeah, but I'm just going to have to face all those strangers tomorrow.
Aidan: Those strangers and me.
Maria: You promise?
Aidan: Hey, on my honor.
Maria: Ok.

Mateo: You sure you don't want me to take care of the kids? I know I promised I would, so --
Edmund: Hey, you helped, believe me, and I understand why the kids don't want to go home without me.
Mateo: All right, we'll talk tomorrow.
Edmund: Ok. Hey, listen, Isabella -- don't worry, ok? I didn't lose Maria and then get her back to lose her again, I promise.
Isabella: You're the only one for her, Edmund.

Frank: Here we go. Hey, there's your main man.
Maddie: Daddy!
Edmund: Hi, Sweetheart. You decided to wait for me?
Maddie: And Mommy Brooke. I want her to take me home.
Brooke: Oh, Maddie --
Edmund: You up for that?
Brooke: Uh, yes, if you are.
Edmund: Yeah, it's fine. I -- I need to talk to Joe for a minute.
Jake: Brooke, I'll walk you to your car.
Brooke: Oh, thanks, Jake. Tad, actually, is bringing my car around.
Edmund: Their pajamas are on the bathroom hook.
Brooke: I know the one. Sam, want to come? Let's go, Sweetie.
Edmund: See you soon.

Joe: Edmund, what can I do for you?
[Pager beeps]
Joe: Oh, I'm sorry.
Edmund: That's all right. I'm learning how to wait.
Joe: Five minutes.
Edmund: Ok.

Edmund's voice: Your hand in mine, your life joined with mine. Nothing has ever felt so right. Tell me you feel it, too.
Edmund: I love you. We will love each other again.

ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Maggie: I'm leaving this stupid town today.

J.R.: I can't stop thinking about you, about last night.

Tad: The only reason that Maria is back in Pine Valley is because of Brooke, and she deserves your forgiveness.

Man: What we have to work out is your jail sentence.
