ALL MY CHILDREN

AUGUST 6, 1999

Dixie: Tad, honey, are you still here?
Tad: Yeah. I am. I'm just putting some tapes together for the show.
Tad and Dixie: Surprise!
Dixie: Jinx.
Tad: Jinx? What, are we in the third grade? I'd be jinxed with you any day of the week. What the hell is that?
Dixie: Snickerdoodles, fresh out of the oven and just for you. Scary. What have you got there?
Tad: This --
Dixie: Oh.
Tad: Is for you. You see?
Dixie: It's a picture of us on our wedding day.
Tad: It is for you, see?
Dixie: Oh.
Tad: You're so pretty.
Dixie: Look how blissful we were.
Tad: Yes. And look, see. We just put that right --
Dixie: Oh, stop. Stop. Don't get that on the picture.
Tad: How blissful we are. Yes, we are, and don't you forget it, ok?

Scott: Oh, great shot. I want to get this on tape. Can you guys just hold that for a sec?
Tad: Oh, gee, look at the time. August already. Got to go. Here. Will you hold this for me? I'll call you from the office, honey.
Dixie: Ok.
Tad: Don't eat all of those -- things.
Becca: Snickerdoodles.
Tad: Right.
Scott: Something I said?
Dixie: No, no, no. Just Tad's not quite ready for his close-.up.

David: "Dimitri Marick, Count Andrassy of Budapest, Hungary, dies."

[David remembers Erica talking about Dimitri]

Erica: Dimitri loved me. He loved me more than any man has ever loved me.

David: The funeral should be over by now.

[Alex thinks about Dimitri}

Dimitri: I love my brother.
Alex: Well, then tell him.
Dimitri: I can't. Two years ago he lost his wife.
Alex: Yes, you mentioned that.
Dimitri: And I was unkind.
Alex: I thought you said that you saved him from that aqueduct.
Dimitri: That was later. When Maria died, I took advantage of the situation. I sued for custody of their daughter. I hid the truth -- the truth from him. I mean, there was a time when Madeline -- when everyone thought that Madeline was mine, but she wasn't. Edmund didn't know that, and I -- I will never forgive myself for the suffering that I caused him.
Alex: But he's forgiven you, surely.
Dimitri: Edmund's the better man.
Alex: Oh, I doubt that.
Dimitri: No, no, no. No, no, no. Of that I am certain. And he does not deserve this, no matter what the outcome. He's just starting to get his life back together.

Dimitri's voice: Do I have your promise?

Alex: Edmund? Edmund -- it's odd, isn't it, how everything in this room is exactly the same as when we left an hour ago, yet everything's changed.
Edmund: You know, when Dimitri's coffin was put in the mausoleum -- the sound was so final. I -- up until that point, I could almost pretend that he would walk through that door at any moment. But he won't. How do you do it?
Alex: Do what?
Edmund: Keep it together.
Alex: You know us Brits. Stiff upper lip and all that. Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's just that I don't have any memories of him in this house. I just see a beautifully furnished room. But you see the last time you shared a great bottle of port or played hide-and-seek with the children. All my memories of him are in London.

Erica: Edmund -- what are we going to do without him?
Edmund: I don't --
Erica: If only we just had had an opportunity just to look at his beautiful face just one more time.
Jack: I'm very, very sorry for your loss.
Alex: Thank you. Thank you for coming.
Jack: Sure.
Brooke: Alex, this is Hayley Santos.
Hayley: Hello.
Alex: Hi.
Hayley: I'm -- I -- I don't know what to say. I'll never forget Dimitri's kindness.
Alex: I believe you're quite handy with a sword?
Hayley: Dimitri tried to teach me to fence. He was very patient. And he had a great sense of humor, thank God.
Alex: You were very important to him.
Hayley: I don't think he'll ever know how much he meant to all of us.
Alex: Yes, I think he does.
Brooke: It was a beautiful service, Alex.
Alex: Yeah. I couldn't have done it without Edmund. He contacted everyone, all the family.
Brooke: Did you meet Dimitri's son Anton and his mother, Corvina?
Alex: I did, briefly.
Jack: It's too bad they had to go straight back to Budapest after the service.
Brooke: I think Angelique is going to stay for a little while. Did you meet her? She and Dimitri had quite a history.
Alex: He told me.
Jack: Where is Angelique? I'd kind of like to catch up myself.
Alex: Upstairs with Eugenia.
Jack: I didn't see the Duchess at the service. Is she ok?
Alex: This whole thing has been such a blow to her. She didn't have the strength to leave the room.
Jack: I see. Well, I kind of like the old girl. I'm going to go up and check on her, if you'll excuse me.

Peggy: Oh, good Lord. Everyone's arrived ahead of us. I should've been here first to get the food ready. What would Dimi think?

Ryan: Peggy's taking this pretty hard.
Gillian: Yeah, she doted on Dimitri. He was like a son to her. I didn't expect to see you here. Thank you for coming by.
Ryan: I just -- I wish I knew about it sooner. I know how much you loved him. I loved him, too. He was -- he was really there for me when a lot of people weren't. Except you.
Gillian: You know, when I was a little girl, he always made me feel so grown up, and that was one of the things that I loved most about him. And now that I'm grown up, he could make me feel as safe as a child. How can a man that was larger than life no longer be?
Ryan: Come here. Come here, princess. It's ok. Shh. You don't have to be brave. Not for Dimitri. Not for me.

Scott: Ok, we're set. I'm all yours.
Becca: Ok.
Scott: Let me check those snickerdoodles.
Becca: We'll be right back.
Dixie: Ok.
Becca: Whoa. Watch out, guys.
Jamie: She looks normal to me.
Junior: It's not something you can see yet.
Jamie: I don't believe you.
Dixie: All right, guys, what's going on?
Junior: Let's feed her something. You'll see. Her face will turn all white and she'll screw up her eyes. And then she'll say she has to see a man about a horse and run out of the room.
Dixie: I will not.
Junior: Oh, yeah, and look over there. Baby catalogues. She'll puke all over the place and then look at those, just like Liza did before she had Colby.
Dixie: Ok, guys, let's stop all of this craziness and just wait to talk about this till your dad gets home, ok?
Junior: Ha, I told you. Waiting for Dad is a sure sign. If the answer was no, she'd just say no.
Jamie: Dixie, are you going to have a baby?
Dixie: Um -- well -- Yeah, all right, I confess. I am. How do you feel about a baby sister?
Jamie: A girl?
Junior: A sister?

David: What's on your mind?
Tad: Three words -- high-risk pregnancy.
David: We all know what Dixie is up against.
Tad: Are you sure? Dixie doesn't seem to. And with all due respect, your cavalier attitude isn't exactly helping her to face it.
David: I'm curious. Dixie came to me at your suggestion, r
ight?
Tad: So? David: Why me? What about your family? I mean, doctors high and mighty are certainly capable of supervising this case.
Tad: Jake and my father aren't cardiac specialists. You are. You've already saved her life once. If you're not careful, you'll have to do it again.
David: But that's not enough for Jake to approve of my involvement.
Tad: Jake hasn't got a wife whose life is on the line.
David: So the moral issues that have your brother so worked up aren't a problem for you?
David: You don't approve of me as a human being, but I'm of use to you as a doctor, so you'll cut me some slack? Well, that's very broad-minded of you, Tad -- especially from someone of the puritanical Martin clan.
Tad: Leave my family out of it. The only thing I care about is that Dixie understands how dangerous this pregnancy is. That's where you come in, doctor. The 100% cold-hearted professional.
David: She's willing to take this risk. Why aren't you?
Tad: Because as far as I'm concerned, any risk to Dixie's life at all isn't worth taking.
David: A no-risk pregnancy is not possible in her case. Oh, ok. I think I'm onto you, Martin. You want me -- no, you need me to tell Dixie to end this pregnancy, don't you?
Dixie: Hi. Sorry I'm a little bit early. I -- hi. What are you doing here?

Hayley: I miss him.
Edmund: I know.
Hayley: I'm sorry. I'm supposed to be comforting you, and here you are --
Edmund: Here I am spending time with one of my favorite people.
Hayley: Oh, thanks.
Edmund: You know, I'd go crazy if it weren't for people like you who make him seem so close.
Hayley: Yeah, he's gone, but everywhere you look --
Edmund: You hold on to those memories, ok? Maybe it'll make it easier for us. Listen, eat. At least you'll make Peggy feel happy, ok?
Hayley: Mm-hmm.

Brooke: Erica, how are you?
Erica: Well, Myrtle's taking very good care of me.
Brooke: I thought maybe Palmer might have come with you.
Erica: No, he sent a telegram expressing his condolences, but he's actually sailing on someone's yacht in the Mediterranean -- a baron or something --
Myrtle: Is he really?
Erica: Mm-hmm.
Myrtle: Oh.
Brooke: Myrtle, can I get you anything?
Myrtle: No, no, darling, thank you.
Brooke: Ok.
Peggy: Dimitri's the one who should be laying me to rest. I still can't accept it.
Erica: No, neither can I. She's made herself quite at home, hasn't she?
Peggy: Well, Alex looks calm enough now, but I saw her when she thought she was alone, and the look on her face would've broken your heart.
Erica: I wanted to see Dimitri's face, and so did Edmund, and so did you, Peggy. She's just made it much harder on everyone.
Myrtle: Oh, darling, darling. Darling, you've got to remember that the poor girl should be on her honeymoon and here she is a widow.
Erica: Dimitri and I were soul mates, Myrtle. Now, no one can deny that I was the love of his life, not her.

Alex: Erica? I just wanted to thank you so much for coming.
Erica: Well, of course. Where else would I be, Mrs. Marick? Or do you prefer Countess Andrassy?
Alex: You can call me Alexandra. Or Alex, if you like.
Myrtle: Alex, we're -- we're truly very sorry for your loss.
Alex: Thank you. The last few days have been torture, but I'm -- I'm so glad to meet people from Dimitri's life.
Erica: Dimitri had such an enormous effect on so many people's lives. With his generosity, he was always helping people. Brooke, actually -- I know that you've met Brooke -- well, at one point Brooke was accused of murder, and Dimitri actually moved heaven and earth to get her acquitted. Unfortunately, Brooke took his concern the wrong way. She felt there was a possibility of real love between them. But Dimitri was so dashing. Women were always throwing themselves at him.
Alex: I've learned volumes about his kindness towards others since I've been here. And he told me how your devotion to Bianca inspired him.
Erica: Really?
Alex: Yes. He did talk about you a lot, Erica, and with great affection.
Peggy: Ah, everybody -- since we didn't have a real, old-fashioned wake, let's raise a glass to Dimi. To the most generous, the most noble, the most lovable rascal that ever walked the earth.
Myrtle: Dimitri.
Edmund: Dimitri.
Peggy: Here, here.

Erica: I believe that I knew Dimitri better than any woman ever did. I married him not once but twice. He taught me everything I knew about love and about patience -- which was a very difficult lesson for me to learn. And he also taught me so much about forgiveness. But I'll tell you what, Dimitri. I will never forgive you for this -- for doing this to us, for dying, and for leaving us here, that we have to find our way without you and your light.

Gillian: Dimitri and I were cousins, but he became more of a father to me than my own. In Hungary, no matter what language we spoke, he always understood me. He was just so kind and -- and loving. And in Hungary he was a count. He was a nobleman. But to me, Dimitri is the most noble man I've ever known.

Edmund: Well, you know -- Dimitri and I grew up not knowing that we were related, and when I came back into his life as his brother, I called him an elitist pig and he called me a thief. Those were the good days. And, you know, it didn't get better for a long time. But out of what we endured grew a strength and a freedom that -- that made me who I am, and I'm a better man because of Dimitri. You know, when my wife died, he kept me sane. And I -- he showed me love through -- through family and -- he -- he saved my spirit then, and he saved my life later. And I'm just -- I wish that I could've done something to --

Alex: When Dimitri first told me about Pine Valley and Wildwind, you know, they were just names to me, entertaining stories about a faraway place. But as I got to know him better, these places and the people in this room became as real to me as our love for each other. We had a dream of settling here and raising a family. That dream is gone now, along with my precious husband. But his gift of love will be with me -- I think with all of us -- forever.

Myrtle: What is it, darling?
Erica: I don't know. I -- I just always felt that Wildwind was my home, even when Dimitri and I were apart. I always felt that with Dimitri and I there was always the possibility of -- well, who knows. And so Wildwind was really a symbol for me, you know, of what might be. And yet now -- now, with Dimitri gone, I -- I'm feeling maybe it's just a reminder of what was. And Dimitri will always be in my heart. But maybe I'm ready to move on. I'm leaving. I have to get out of here.
Myrtle: Where are you going?
Erica: I'm not sure.
Myrtle: Do you want me to come with you?
Erica: No, no, no, no, no. You stay here. I'm fine, Myrtle. Really, I am. I'm fine.

David: Tad stopped by to thank me profusely for taking your case.
Tad: That's right. I know how much David's opinion means to you. And I just wanted you to know that I'll stand by whatever decision you two make.
Dixie: Oh. Ok, well -- that's nice. Why don't you stay for the appointment? You know, it's going to be very exciting -- heart monitoring, E.K.G., The works.
Tad: I can't. I'm sorry. Got to get to work. I'll call you later.
Dixie: Oh. Ok. Like the wind, my guy.
David: How are you feeling?
Dixie: Oh, I feel great, great.
David: Nausea dizziness?
Dixie: No, no. You know, the morning sickness is almost completely gone, and the only dizziness I feel is from happiness. Yeah, I'd forgotten how great I feel being pregnant. You know, I have more energy than I ever have. I go to sleep easily. I wake up feeling rested and strong.
David: That's good. That's good. I want you to be happy. A positive attitude is important. But it's also important to make sure that you're aware of the seriousness of all of this, of what's at stake for you and this child.
Dixie: David, I'll do anything and everything you tell me to do.

Becca: E you sorry that you're not going to the queen's party?
Scott: Are you kidding? A bunch of stuffy people in funny hats being [British accent]
terribly proper? [Normal voice]
I'd much rather be here with you, packing and pigging out.
Becca: I mean, I'm sure Ryan's place is going to be great, but aren't you going to miss this place? The swimming pool, tennis courts, stables?
Scott: Don't forget the polo fields.
Becca: I could not imagine growing up in a place like this. It must be like Disneyland but better because I bet you had your own horse.
Scott: Guess again. I was pretty much a latchkey kid in the big city. My mother, Cindy, worked 24/7. And my Dad, Fred, well, he was out trying to score drugs most of the time if he wasn't at home trying to sleep it off. So it was just me and Big Bird most of the time.
Becca: But Stuart -- I thought he was your real father.
Scott: Nope. He adopted me after he married my mom. But he's my only real father as far as I'm concerned.
Becca: I'm sorry. I didn't realize. I just assumed that Stuart was your father and that you were born here in Pine Valley and --
Scott: No, I was Scott Parker, son of a drug addict father who was more interested in his next drug fix than his own son. He got aids from using dirty needles.
Becca: My gosh. How horrible.
Scott: Worse, he gave it to my mom. Stuart was the best thing that ever happened to her and me. When we came here, we were like real family. It was the best. Till she passed away.
Becca: How old were you?
Scott: 9.
Becca: 9. I was 9 when -- oh, never mind.
Scott: What?
Becca: I was 9 when my brother Robbie died.
Scott: What happened?
Becca: He was a Marine in Desert Storm. You know, it was so weird because, after we found out that he'd been killed, we got this letter a week later.
Scott: "Dear freckles --"
Becca: I used to have a lot of freckles.
Scott: "There is sand everywhere and in everything, including my boots, my food, and my eyes. They keep me pretty busy, but I'm looking for something special to bring home."

Hayley: Oh, there you are. Peggy, your deviled eggs were as scrumptious as ever.
Peggy: Oh, thanks, sweetheart. I'll fix you a little care package when you leave.
Hayley: Ok.

Ryan: Excuse me.

{Ryan sniffs glass Hayley was drinking out of]

Hayley: What are you supposed to be? The hooch police?
Ryan: Well, can you blame me? After last night --
Hayley: Last night never happened.

Gillian: I'm going to go upstairs, see Grandmama.
Ryan: You mind if I join you?
Gillian: I'm sure she would love that.
Brooke: Oh. I'm sort of on overload.
Jack: Well, listen, maybe I should take you home.
Brooke: You know what? I think I'm going to go back to "Tempo" and work a little bit on that profile on Dimitri.
Jack: Ok. Maybe later you'd like to sneak out, grab some lunch. We'll celebrate life.
Brooke: I don't know if I can remember how.
Jack: I'll see if I can give us both some pointers, huh? Let's go say good-bye to Alex. Excuse me. I just wanted to say if there's anything you need, anything at all --
Alex: No. You've done so much already. Thank you.
Brooke: I'll give you a call, Alex. You don't have to pick up the phone if you don't feel like talking.
Alex: Oh, you're so kind. Your heart is as big as Dimitri said it was.
Brooke: Ok.
Alex: Ok.
Brooke: You'll -- we'll get through this, huh?
Edmund: Yeah. Somehow.
Brooke: Listen -- take all the time you need because there isn't any reason for you to rush back to work until you're ready, all right?
Edmund: Thanks, Brooke. I don't know what I'm doing one minute to the next.
Brooke: Be kind to yourself, ok?
Jack: See you later, buddy.

David: Well, everything checks out fine.
Dixie: Ha. I knew it.
David: Well, that is a good first step, Dixie, but it is just a small part of the picture. Now, we have to remember that you're still in the relatively early states of pregnancy, which means that anything that you do right now could have an effect on you and this child down the line.
Dixie: You sound so grim.
David: No. I'm just trying to convey to you the seriousness of all of this. Now, there are symptoms that by themselves would mean nothing, ok? But because of your condition, they could be indicative of something even greater. Fever, back pain, dizziness -- now, all of these things could point to kidney failure.
Dixie: David, you don't have to scare me --
David: Listen to me. If you experience any of these things, even for one moment, you are to contact me immediately. Do you understand?
Dixie: Yes. Ok. Sure.
David: Now, if I see any development that raises concern, we might have to rethink this pregnancy.
Dixie: I'll do anything, take any risk for this child. She is defenseless, and I'm all she's got. I'll do whatever it takes to protect her.
David: You have a very lucky baby.
Dixie: I'm the lucky one.
David: Next week, same time, same place. All right?
Dixie: Yeah. I'll be here -- bells on.
David: Ok.

[Knock on door]

David: Erica.
Erica: Hi. I sent a report to Dr. Fascinella about Veil's new face treatment. I wonder, have you heard from him?
David: No, I haven't. How was the funeral? You ok?
Erica: Oh, sure. Yes, I'm fine. No. No, I'm not. I'm really not.

Becca: I'm sorry. It's just I think of Robbie a lot this time of year.
Scott: Why?
Becca: I guess it's the fishing. He always used to take me fishing, but I had to bait my own hook because he wasn't going to have any sissy for a sister.
Scott: You're no sissy, freckles.
Becca: I don't have freckles anymore.
Scott: Yeah, I think I see one right -- right here. Oh, just a spot of dirt.
Becca: Oh, my gosh. I'm so sorry.
Scott: Oh, and another.
Becca: Oh.
Scott: Another.
Another.

Tad: Hey -don't run. You'll put your eye out.
Jamie: Is it true about the pink sheets?
Tad: Is what true about the pink sheets?
Jamie: Well, I know you use pink sheets on your bed. I checked.
Tad: James, what are you trying to tell me?
Jamie: If you use blue sheets, would it be a boy?
Junior: Yeah. And if they were green sheets, we'd have a baby martian.
Jamie: You made it all up?
Tad: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What -- what -- what's going on?
Junior: Tad, it's ok. Mom told us. We know all about the baby.

{Alex remembers Dimitri]

Dimitri: I love you so much. And I want you to know, whatever happens --
Alex: Oh -- shut up.

David: Let me take care of you. Take the day off and come with me. It'll do you good.
Erica: Well, what about your schedule?
David: No. I don't have any surgeries scheduled for today and I just finished my last appointment.
Erica: I don't know. I have to check on Enchantment, and I have to see if Myrtle's all right.
David: Let me see if you're all right. Tell me that you'll take the day off and come with me.
Erica: All right. All right, yes, I will.
