ALL MY CHILDREN

FEBRUARY 23, 2000

Hayley: Good morning.
Ryan: Morning. You got some time right now?
Hayley: Sure.
Ryan: Can I come in?
Hayley: Yeah, please.
Ryan: Listen, I got a list of people that are interested in talking with you about endorsements. I didn't know if you are into that sort of thing. Consider it.
Hayley: I'm glad to see you with some enthusiasm again. I was beginning to worry.
Ryan: You mean ever since I made a fool of myself at Gillian's wedding?
Hayley: Well, yeah, there was that.
Ryan: Yeah, there was that. Well, that's over.
Hayley: And Gillian?
Ryan: Gillian? Gillian's over, too. It's got to be, right? Right now I'm just putting all my energy into raising the bottom line of WRCW. And you know what? It's working. It's working. I feel good. I haven't felt this good in -- long time.

Tad: Listen, have you guys got a minute for a quick time-out?
Jake: What's up, guys?
Tad: Did you tell me you were meeting with Leslie Coulson today?
Jake: Yeah, she's coming by later. We're going to plan some strategy.
Tad: Excellent. My friend, your strategy's about to change, big time.
Jake: What do you mean?
Dixie: Well, we think we may have Adam in a tight spot.
Jake: How?
Tad: I overheard Adam talking to Liza at WRCW. Now, if I heard right, he's committed some kind of fraud and she's in on it.
Jake: What kind of fraud?
Tad: I don't know. But they're definitely trying to keep it under wraps.
Dixie: Don't worry. We'll figure out what it is.
Tad: You know what this means? If she's done something serious, not only could you end up with custody of Colby, Adam might end up in jail.

Jack: Adam, if you don't mind, I'd like to have a word with you before Liza gets here.
Adam: I'll do whatever I can to help, jack. You know that.
Jack: I'm certainly glad to hear that. You know, it doesn't take a legal genius to figure out what Leslie Coulson's strategy is going to be in that courtroom. She and Jake are going to do their very best to show that you are the worst possible influence. Not only on Colby, but on Liza, as well.
Adam: Let them try we can shove their strategy down their throats.
Jack: Yeah. Well, this is exactly the kind of response we do not want during this process. I don't need to make my job any harder by watching you turn yourself into an ogre.
Adam: You want me to maintain my cool.
Jack: Yes. Yes, Adam. You have to. Now, you may hear a lot of incendiary testimony in that courtroom, but I want you -- look, you cannot react to it.
Adam: Fine.
Jack: Nor outside the courtroom, either. Look, I need you to be above reproach. I need you to be the model citizen from now until this custody hearing because, I'm telling you, Adam, I don't want any surprises. So if you have an idea on how we can win this lawsuit, do us all a favor and forget about it, all right? Please.
Adam: Jack, I know full well that you're calling all the shots here. [Doorbell rings] Adam: I'm certainly not going to do anything to jeopardize Liza's chances to win this custody suit. Excuse me.

Leo: Good morning, Mr. Chandler.
Adam: What the devil are you doing here? I haven't sent for you.
Leo: Just give me what's mine, and our business is over.
Adam: No, no, no. Come back later. No, come tomorrow to the office. Call first.
Leo: I want my money. And the Cortlandt Electronics business report you blackmailed me with.
Adam: Quiet. I want you out of here.
Leo: No, sir. I did exactly what you told me to do even though I didn't want to. Your brother's wife woke up in another man's bed. Their marriage is all but over, just like you wanted it, so pay me.

Stuart: Good morning. I'm sorry I went to sleep before you got home last night
Marian: I was very late.
Stuart: Yeah. You didn't sleep very well, either. When I leaned over to kiss you good morning, you pretended to be sleep.
Marian: No, Stuart --
Stuart: But it's ok. I know what happened last night. The man you were with last night.
Marian: Oh, my God, Stuart. How could you possibly? Stuart: You can't keep a secret from me. He didn't buy the house, did he?
Marian: No. No, he didn't buy the house.
Stuart: Yeah, well, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I know how hard you worked on that and how much time you put in on him. But who needs him? You'll sell it later, and you'll probably make more money doing it. Not that we need the money. All we really need is each other, right?
Marian: Stuart --
Stuart: And I don't mind that we missed our anniversary dinner last night, either. Why don't we pretend today's our anniversary, ok? I made Belgian waffles, your favorite breakfast. Can you smell them?

[Knock on door]

Stuart: Ah.
Liza: Hello. Happy anniversary. Sorry I didn't get by yesterday when it was your real anniversary.
Stuart: It's ok. This is our anniversary.
Liza: Well, it isn't, but -- what's the matter?

[Stuart leaves the room]

Marian: Oh, my God, Liza. What have I done?
Liza: Mother. What's wrong?
Marian: Do you think it's possible for a person to revert to their old self just for an instant? I mean, even when they're very happy with their life just the way it is, that they could just revert back to their old, wicked ways? Do you?
Liza: Oh, mother. You didn't. Oh, my god. You got drunk. You slept with another man?

Myrtle: Rae, I made some tea. Would you like some?
Rae: Myrtle, parcel service is going to pick up the rest of my things.
Myrtle: Oh. You packed.
Rae: Prepaid. I didn't want you to worry about any of that.
Myrtle: I understand.
Rae: I know we probably should have finished our conversation about all of this last night. I just -- I just can't right now. You understand?
Myrtle: I know it's too much. It really was. You came here to look for your daughter, and you found your mother.
Rae: I will call you in a few days. I'm sure we can talk about everything.
Myrtle: I'm sure we can. Rae -- Rae -- don't go thinking I'm a terrible person, a bad mother for giving you up. Do you hate me for it?
Rae: No, I don't hate you.
Myrtle: The only reason I gave you up, darling, is because I loved you. I -- you know, when I looked out of the window and saw your mother and father carrying you away, I knew they would love you and they'd give you everything I couldn't give you. You know? They'd give you security, a home, two parents, and Christmas mornings, birthday parties.
Rae: But they didn't. They died. Isn't it ironic, Myrtle? My cousins raised me, and they really didn't give a damn about me.
Myrtle: I'm so terribly sorry about that.
Rae: I know that things were very different then. They had to be. You were a single woman with a baby. But I keep thinking -- I mean, you lived with show people, didn't you? I mean, did you have to be ashamed of me with them?
Myrtle: Oh, no, no. I was never, never ashamed of you, darling. I was ashamed of myself for being so weak, for not being capable to keep you and take care of you. I wanted you to have a clean life without con men and drunks. I was too young to know that you got that sort of person everywhere, not just in carnies.
Rae: But you didn't -- you didn't try and find me, even now. I mean, you tried to burn the file.
Myrtle: But I didn't burn it, and I'm glad I didn't. Oh, darling, if you knew how often I've imagined u grown-up and radiant. How was I to know you were going to be so beautiful, so smart, so special?
Rae: I will call you. I promise.
Myrtle: Listen, darling, you know I've lived alone all my life. I know I've got a lot of friends and I know they love me. But I have been alone. But now that -- now that I've found you --
Rae: I really he to go. I'll call. I promise I will.
Myrtle: No --
Rae: I promise.
Myrtle: Rae, before you go, darling, just one thing. Stay long enough for me to tell you about him.
Rae: My father?

Adam: You're really a very annoying young man. You know that?
Adam: You're sure everything went off exactly as planned?
Leo: Paolo did exactly as he was ordered. Marian woke up in his bed.
Adam: I was right about her.
Leo: Actually, Paolo slipped a mild drug into her drink to get her there. She didn't go willingly, Mr. Chandler.
Adam: A mild drug?
Leo: She passed out, but she's fine now.
Adam: And Stuart caught them in bed together?
Leo: Actually, it was Scott who showed up.
Adam: That wasn't the plan. It was Stuart that was supposed to catch them.
Leo: It's the next best thing, ok? There's no way this guy's going to not tell his father about this.
Adam: You better pray you're right about that.
Leo: So give me my money. And I want that business report that you had me steal from Palmer, too.
Adam: You'll get your money. As far as those business papers you're talking about, I'm going to hold on to them for a while.
Leo: What? You promised me. I wouldn't have had any part of this if you hadn't had those papers dangling over my head.
Adam: The whole plot is no good to me if anybody finds out that I had anything to do with it. The business papers stay with me as a guarantee that you'll keep your mouth shut.
Leo: So you're reneging.
Adam: You'd better take what you can get, kid. Stay right here. Don't move.

Adam: You comfortable, Jack?
Jack: Yeah, Adam, I'm fine.
Adam: A small business matter. Give me two minutes.
Jack: Let me call you back in a little bit, huh? Great. Thanks.
Leo: I'm here to pick something up for WRCW for Liza. I work at WRCW. For Tad Martin.
Jack: Thanks for the information.
Leo: But you couldn't care less.
Adam: Here you are. Take this --
Leo: To WRCW.
Adam: Yes, yes. Here's something for your trouble.
Leo: Well, thank you. Thank you.

Adam: Well, where were we?
Jack: Well, as I recall, Adam, I was trying to stress the importance of your behaving yourself.

Liza: What do you remember?
Marian: I went to BJ's with my client, Paolo. We had a couple of martinis. We were celebrating the fact he bought a new house. Then he said he wanted to give me a deposit. And that's how I ended up in his hotel room. And he made a pass at me.
Liza: I can't believe you let him.
Marian: I didn't let him. I mean, he was very seductive, but I said no. And he understood.
Liz: Oh, I'll bet he did.
Marian: He did. I told him I was very happy with my husband. And then we toasted our anniversary.
Liza: Mm-hmm. More booze?
Marian: It was a glass of champagne.
Liza: Mm-hmm.
Marian: And honestly, Liza, from that moment on, I don't remember anything except waking up in his bed. And he was gone.
Liza: Mother, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Marian: Then you think I did it?
Liza: Yes, mother. Please. This is what you do.
Marian: I didn't want to do it ever anymore again ever.
Liza: Mother, he loves you. And he loves you more than anything. And you have been so lucky to have that kind of love. But you couldn't help it. You had to just go back to being the same deceitful person that you always were your whole life. And now it's going to destroy Stuart, the one great person that has entered your life.
Marian: You're right. It's going to destroy Stuart when he finds out. Oh, my God. Liza, please. What am I going to do now?
Liza: I can't help you. I can't help it that you ruined the one great thing that came into your life.

Stuart: Liza? Belgian waffles. Would you stay and have breakfast with us? Maybe you can help cheer your mother up. She's all sad and sorry about the house she didn't sell.
Liza: I can't. I have a meeting with Jackson Montgomery, Stuart.
Stuart: Oh, sure. That. Yeah. Hope it goes well.
Liza: I hope it goes well, too.

Stuart: I was wrong, wasn't I? This isn't about a house you didn't sell.
Marian: I love you so much, Stuart.
Stuart: I love you, too. You want to have some breakfast? Or is there something you want to tell me first?
Marian: There's something that I wish with all my heart that I didn't have to tell you.
Stuart: Marian, are you sick?
Marian: Oh, no, no. No, I am not sick, Stuart. It's nothing to do with my health.
Stuart: Thank God. Then there's nothing you could say that would hurt me.
Marian: Yes, there is. There is. And it could not only hurt you, it could end our marriage.
Stuart: No, there is nothing you could say that would make me stop loving you.
Marian: Yes, there is, Stuart.
Marian: I think that I have been unfaithful to you.

Hayley: Feels good to be wanted.
Ryan: Yeah. I guess it would. I wouldn't know how that feels.
Hayley: Oh, stop.
Ryan: I'm kidding. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I'm happy that you're happy. And, believe me, right now, I'm very happy myself. Very happy.
Hayley: Oh, that's right, you're the new 2000 model -- all business. Ryan?
Ryan: Yeah?
Hayley: What happened with you and Gillian?
Ryan: I mean, do you need to ask? She married Jake. That's it.
Hayley: Yeah, I know she married Jake. But you were certain that you could convince her not to go through with it. What happened when you spoke to her?

Gillian: If I didn't have Jake in my life, you wouldn't even be here.
Ryan: I know why you're rushing into this marriage.
Gillian: No, you don't know anything.
Ryan: Jake is not Colby's father.
Gillian: Ryan, that is absurd. Is this what you've come to?
Ryan: I know that Adam is her real father, Gillian. I know that. I lost her. That's all. I held back too much and waited too long to tell her that I love her, I guess.

Hayley: But you said that she was marrying Jake for all the wrong reasons.
Ryan: Well, maybe not all the wrong reasons. I mean, she loves him. And when you love somebody, you're willing to take chances for them. I just really hope she doesn't get hurt, Hayley, that's all.

[Doorbell rings]

Hayley: How could she get hurt?
Ryan: Um -- better get the door, right?
Mateo: Hello.
Hayley: Hello.
Mateo: Morning.
Ryan: Morning, Matt.
Mateo: Hey. How are you? Business meeting?
Hayley: Yeah. Actually, Ryan's come over here to offer me a list of public appearances. You know, real high-class stuff like gym stores and sneaker shops.
Mateo: Great.
Ryan: Don't worry, she'll make sure she runs them by you first.
Hayley: I said I would, and I will.
Mateo: Well, when you're done with all that stuff, maybe we could talk about the engagement party, you know?
Ryan: Hey, listen, listen, I'll split. You guys talk about that now. We'll talk about this tomorrow.
Hayley: Ok. Well, we could meet over breakfast or something.
Ryan: All right.

[Telephone rings]

Hayley: Excuse me. Hello. This is Hayley Vaughan speaking. Yes, Ms. Coulson, I know who you are. No, I know you represent Jake Martin. Um -- well, no, actually, that's not -- that's not convenient right now. Well, all right. 15 Minutes is all I can give you, though, you know, at the most. Ok. I'll be right over. She must be a phenomenal attorney. I wanted to punch her in the mouth.

Mateo: What did she want?
Hayley: You know, she wants me to go over some stuff for Jake and Colby's custody hearing. I figured I'd do it this way, otherwise it's going to ruin our whole day.
Mateo: I'll just wait for you to get back.
Hayley: Ok.
Mateo: Ok?
Hayley: You sure?
Mateo: Yeah.
Hayley: All right.
Mateo: Bye.
Hayley: And let me know tomorrow what you want me to say at these gigs and stuff, ok?
Ryan: Yeah, absolutely.
Hayley: Thanks, Ryan.
Ryan: Ok.

Mateo: So, when you talk to Hayley later on, tell her that you want to meet her at WRCW, ok?
Ryan: Yeah. Sure. Any particular reason?
Mateo: You know, you, you know, being over here having breakfast. I don't want you to make a habit of it.

Jake: So Adam did set Ryan off.
Tad: It's the reason Lavery showed up at the wedding.
Jake: So, is that it? Obviously something's going on here, but we need a little bit more to go on, something to follow up.
Dixie: Well, we think Ryan knows what the secret is, whatever it is.
Tad: He definitely knows something. Adam implied as much. But that's what's so confusing. Adam sent him to the wedding to say something. But at the same time, Liza and Adam are acting very, very frightened about this. And Liza, for one, is panicked this thing is going to come out.
Dixie: So we think that this is something criminal, something that they could go to jail for.
Jake: Chandler Enterprises. It's a good bet that they're participating in some kind of corporate fraud. They got a whole battalion of lawyers to cover it up.
Tad: It's nothing like that. This definitely involves Liza. He's got something over her head. That's why she won't leave him. She's afraid if she does, she'll lose Colby because he's as much as said he's going to reveal this thing.
Dixie: So it doesn't sound like a corporate crime.
Jake: Dixie, I appreciate you doing this, but are you sure you're ok with it? Adam is Junior's dad. And if we find something on Adam, it might hurt Junior.
Dixie: Please. Junior has got to be used to this by now.
Tad: He's certainly old enough to understand.
Dixie: Besides, he's got to learn that he can't be like his father.
Jake: All right, then we have to find out what Adam's done.
Tad: And make sure the world knows about it.
Jake: How do we do that?
Tad: Well, like I said, he's holding something over Liza's head. We just got to find out what. Adam's not going to tell me anything. Ryan pointed me in Adam's direction, but after that, he assured me he didn't want to go anywhere near this thing.

David: Jake is not Colby's biological father. Adam is.
Gillian: How can that be?
David: Oh, it's really quite simple, actually. You see, moneybags here bought the clinic that Liza was being inseminated in. And when no one was looking, he pulled what is called a classic switch-a-roo. He switched his sperm with Jake's. So Adam is a daddy.

Jake: Well, I'll fill Leslie Coulson in on everything we know. You know her, she likes to dig and scratch. She'll come up with something.
Tad: Like the dog she is.
Dixie: Well, we need her now.
Jake: Thanks. This is going to change everything. If we get something on Adam, might make getting full custody of Colby a heck of a lot easier.
Gillian: Stop it. For God's sakes, stop it!
Gillian: How can you go on and on about Adam and Adam's crime? Instead of wasting energy trying to prove Adam and Liza as these criminals, we should do what's best for the baby. I mean, if we try to expose Adam as this criminal, then we have totally sunk to his level. We have to do what's best for Colby.
Tad: What are you saying, that we should just drop this?
Gillian: For Colby's sake, yes.

Ryan: Look, man, this is probably none of my business, but I thought you and Hayley had a new understanding. If you're going to continue to manage her life, maybe I should just, you know --
Mateo: It's not about Hayley. It's me. I don't like you. I don't trust you. Hayley's life and my life would be a lot better if you weren't in it.
Ryan: Well, you know what? I'm not all that crazy about you either, Matt.
Mateo: Right, right. And that stunt you pulled with Gillian -- you know, trying to break up her wedding --
Ryan: There's really nothing you can say that I don't already know about that.
Mateo: She's better off with Jake anyway.
Ryan: Yeah, no argument here.
Mateo: Yeah. You know, Ryan, see, people have forgiveness in their hearts, you know? They have that. Me? I don't know. I'm just not as forgiving.

Adam: Jackson's here for your strategy meeting.
Liza: Oh, has he been waiting long?
Adam: No, no, just a few minutes. What's wrong? Is it Colby?
Liza: Colby's fine. It's my mother.
Adam: Oh. What's wrong with her?
Liza: Oh, she just did something really stupid and totally unforgivable.

Marian: And I didn't know how much time had passed or what had happened.
Stuart: And you were in this man's bed.
Marian: Alone. But, yes, I was. And, Stuart, I was naked.
Stuart: You had a blackout because you were drinking too much.
Marian: I used to have them back in the old days when I was a party girl. I guess the combination of the martinis and the champagne made me just revert back to my old self again. And, you know, it was bad enough back then, but now it's just unthinkable. So I must have slept with him, a man that I hardly knew. One stupid, careless act, and I have ruined everything that we had together.

Rae: An acrobat.
Myrtle: He was an artist. He and his brothers did very dangerous, wonderful things on the high wire.
Rae: What was his name?
Myrtle: Marcello Angelina.
Rae: Angelina. I'm Italian. Well, that figures, doesn't it?
Myrtle: They came from Naples. Oh, he was so beautiful. He was so kind. He was such a gentleman. And, you know, the first time I saw you, it was so strange. I felt suddenly drawn to you. And now I understand why. You have your father's eyes.
Rae: Did you love each other?
Myrtle: Yes. If you never believe anything else, you believe that. We loved each other very much.
Rae: Why didn't you marry?
Myrtle: Well, his brother had arranged for him to marry some other woman that he had never met. She was a woman in another circus family in Italy. Well, if he had reneged, it would have been dishonor to both families and he would have been banished from the family, from the work that he loved.
Rae: But if you loved each other so much --
Myrtle: Darling, I couldn't ask him to do that.
Rae: No, no, you couldn't.
Myrtle: By the time that I knew you were on the way, he was already married.
Rae: Do you know where he is now?
Myrtle: Darling, he died sometime later. He was trying to do some very dangerous act on the high wire, and his brother somehow failed to catch him. But it was very quick. I wish, I wish, I wish he had seen you. You know, he would have loved you. How could he not?
Rae: So he's been dead a long time.
Myrtle: Rae, there is so much I want to tell you, and there's so much I want to ask from you. Couldn't we just give each other a chance to get to know a little more about each other?

[Knock on door]

[Door opens]

Opal: Myrt? Oh, Myrt! Thank the Lord you are well. I have been worried sick about you. When you were a no-show at that wedding, I -- there's a mighty strange vibe in here. What's going on? Oh. You're having a séance, aren't you? Now, don't try to deny it. I know a séance when I see a séance. What, you're conjuring up?
Myrtle: Opal, this -- darling, this is not a terribly good time to talk.
Opal: Oh, I completely understand, Myrt. I really do. I would not want to come between you and Rae making the contact.
Myrtle: I'll call you later, darling.
Opal: Are you all right, though, Myrt?
Myrtle: Yes, yes, I'm fine. I've never been so happy or so scared in my life.
Opal: Well, you be careful. Take care of yourself, all right?
Myrtle: Thank you for coming. Opal: Mm-hmm.

Myrtle: Rae?

Adam: Liza, honey, you're trembling.
Liza: You know, I really want people to change -- you, my mother.
Adam: Whatever this is with your mother, I'll help you through it. Whatever happens from now on -- this damn custody hearing -- I'm going to help you. I'll be standing beside you and Colby.

Marian: I've never been very good with liquor, Stuart. And I know that's no excuse. So I guess I must have slept with him. I'm so sorry. And if you can't forgive me, I'll understand.
Stuart: Marian, wait.

Tad: Gillian, where's this coming from? I mean, do we want Jake to have custody of Colby or not?
Dixie: You know -- Gillian, everything that you're saying is absolutely right. I mean, I have to tell you, I know exactly where you're coming from. I can't tell you how many times I've said to myself I'm not going to sink to Adam Chandler's level. But it just doesn't work. You have to use the same weapons, or Adam wins. Every time.
Tad: If we want Colby to be raised as a Martin, weave to be willing to do whatever is necessary to make sure that happens.
Jake: Look, I think we need to continue our honeymoon.
Tad: Look, we just -- we know how important this custody hearing is to the both of you.
Dixie: I'm sorry. You know, this is really bad timing. We should just let you enjoy your honeymoon.
Tad: We'll get into it later. Could I talk to you for just a second?
Jake: Yeah.

Tad: Look, I apologize. You to get back to business, and we'll see what we can find out, all right?
Jake: That's all right. Did you actually talk to Ryan?
Tad: No, not since the wedding. He's the one that put me on to Adam.
Jake: Ok. Well, thanks, guys.
Tad: Yeah.
Jake: Thank you. Love you both.

Gillian: Jake, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Jake: No, no, no, no, no. Hey, hey. You know how much I love you? Do you? I don't think you do. You're going to be the perfect mother for Colby. I understand what you're saying. I'm glad you said it. But, Gillian, you got to understand that Adam is a snake. He'll do anything to get Colby. He'll use anything against us. That's why if he's done anything illegal or immoral, we have to use it against him. We have to expose him. All right?

Dixie: What now?
Tad: I don't know. What? What are you thinking?
Dixie: Exactly what you're thinking.

Stuart: Marian, I don't forgive you because there's nothing to forgive. I don't believe you slept with that man.
Marian: You don't? I was in his bed, Stuart.
Stuart: You and I have always had this kind of weird special communication between us. We know what the other person is thinking sometimes when we're clear across town.
Marian: Yes, we do.
Stuart: Nobody believes it, but we do. It's true. And I'm thinking -- last night I was thinking of you, all about you. And there's no way you could have been unfaithful to me and me not know it.
Marian: What about the evidence?
Stuart: No, I don't care about the evidence. You don't remember doing it. Well, I don't remember you doing it, either. I don't believe you slept with this man -- in my heart, in my stomach, and even between my ears. I've checked. I feel fine.
Marian: Stuart, do you really think that I didn't?
Stuart: There aren't enough martinis in the world to make you stop loving me.
Marian: You're right. You are absolutely right.
Stuart: Then what's the problem?
Marian: Oh, Stuart. I love you. I love you.

Adam: I am with you, Liza. You know that. No matter what.
Liza: Whether I like it or not, right?
Jack: Well, Liza, there you are. You ready to get to work?
Liza: Yes. Why don't we talk in the study.
Jack: Yeah. Listen, I have a pretty good idea that Leslie Coulson's going to open with some predictable moves.
Hayley: She's already started. I was just subpoenaed by Jake's attorney.
Adam: What the devil do they want from you?
Hayley: I suppose she wants to hear me say what a lousy father you are.

Tad: So, how do we proceed if Ryan's a dead end?
Dixie: I don't know. I guess we just have to find somebody that we can trust and see if we can get any information out of them.
Tad: Stuart.
Dixie: Stuart.
Tad: Yeah.
Dixie: He's got to know something about what Adam's doing.
Tad: And all we got to do is convince him to tell us about it.
