ALL MY CHILDREN

FEBRUARY 24, 2000

Tad:: Has anybody seen Leo? No? All right, terrific. Will somebody find Eli? And tell him to find Leo. Can we please get started, guys? The meeting was supposed to start over 20 minutes ago. What's going on? Hi, Becca.
Becca: Hi.
Tad: What's up?
Becca: Scott said you need a personal assistant.
Tad: Scott said I needed a PA.?
Dixie: Oh, don't mind him. He just didn't get any candy bars for his cereal.
Tad: Did you happen to see Leo on your way in? You know, tall, blond, looks like he's calling the shots around this place.
Becca: No, I didn't.
Tad: Of course not. Work obviously interferes with his pleasure principle.
Dixie: Honey, chill.
Tad: Do you really want to help me?
Becca: Sure. I mean --
Tad: Good. Well, I managed to forget my proposal, you know, for this week's expose. It's a blue folder on my desk. Would you mind?
Becca: Sure. I'll be right back.

Tad: What?
Dixie: Sweetheart, you're a maniac. Can you stop barking?
Tad: What do you mean, stop barking? I'm paid to bark. It's my job. Besides, the sooner this meeting is over, the sooner we can find out what Adam and Liza are up to, which might be significant, considering she's terrified she's going to lose her daughter over it.
Dixie: Well, I know. Or go to prison.
Tad: Dix, if Adam's done something to hurt Jake, then prison's the least of his worries.
Dixie: What about Stuart? Do you really think he may have information for us?
Tad: I hope so. He's helped us before.

Becca: Here you go.
Tad: Oh, thanks.

Becca: Working on your film idea? Doodles. Dark, angry doodles. What happened when you went to talk to Marian last night?
Scott: My dad was still wearing his king of hearts outfit. He was completely sure that Marian would turn up at any minute to celebrate their anniversary. I don't know. I couldn't tell him what we saw.
Becca: We're still not sure, though.
Scott: Becca, we saw her in another guy's bed. What exactly do we need to see?
Becca: Nothing. That's between Stuart and Marian.
Scott: I -- you keep saying that, but I cannot keep that a secret.
Becca: Well, you don't have to. I mean, why don't you talk to her, get her side of the story?
Scott: Right, right, right. "Excuse me, Marian. Listen, have you cheated on my dad with any clients recently?" You know, I don't think so.
Becca: Look, just talk to her. It might help the both of you.
Scott: She doesn't deserve a man like my dad.

Marian: Oh, Stuart. Do you truly believe that I wasn't unfaithful to you?
Stuart: Truly. Truly, really, absolutely, positively.
Marian: But how can you be so certain when I'm not sure myself?
Stuart: It's simple. You love me.
Marian: Oh, yes, I love you so much. But, Stuart, in the past --
Stuart: No, no, no. No, I knew that Marian. She's gone. My Marian would never be unfaithful to me.
Marian: Oh, Stuart.
Stuart: Come on, don't cry. It's ok. It's ok.
Marian: You know something? I don't deserve someone as wonderful as you are.
Stuart: That's what I say to myself every morning when I wake up and look at your face across the pillow from me. I got to go.
Marian: What? Where are you going?
Stuart: I'm going to find out who did this to you.
Marian: Stuart, please. Can't we just forget this ever happened? Please?
Stuart: No. No, I can't forget it ever happened. No, somebody tried to hurt you. I'm not going to let them get away with that.
Marian: I -- I haven't really been hurt.
Stuart: Of course you have. He made you doubt yourself. That's a terrible feeling. I want you to trust yourself as much as I trust you.
Marian: I don't think that's possible.
Stuart: Well, it will be. It will be just as soon as I prove that you were set up.
Marian: Think I was set up?
Stuart: Yes, yes. The client. Somebody told him who you were, right? Who -- who was that that told him?
Marian: Well, he told me that he saw my photograph.
Stuart: Oh. Did you -- did he leave a deposit?
Marian: No. He gave me a cell phone number.
Stuart: Well, did he sign one of those binder things?
Marian: No.
Stuart: Did he leave a forwarding address?
Marian: No.
Stuart: Marian, he didn't want to buy a house. He wanted to hurt you! And I want to find out why.
Marian: Oh, Stuart, please. Just knowing that you love me, that's enough. Please, let's not do this.
Stuart: No, it's not enough for me. I'm going to prove to you that you are the best Marian that ever was.

Leo: One more thing -- the polyester-mix sheets make my feet sweat. I'd prefer linen.
Man: I'll see to it right away. Mr. Du Pres, the cost is quite high.
Leo: Oh, didn't I mention this is going to be on Mr. Cortlandt's account?
Man: Of course. Such a generous man.
Leo: He's become the father I never had.
Man: Well, I'll see to it immediately. I know how Mr. Cortlandt hates to be kept waiting.
Leo: Good man.

David: Laying ways to Palmer's fortune?
Leo: It's true. Big brother is always watching.
David: You pick his pocket for this, too?
Leo: I paid for it myself, actually. Leather does always make a man feel optimistic, right?
David: Well, if I knew you were going to get dressed up for brunch --
Leo: Brunch.
David: Well, just last night you said you wanted to get to know me better. Don't tell me you lied.
Leo: No, I was --
David: And that little farce that I interrupted in the hall -- you promised a full explanation today.
Leo: How about another time?
David: How about right now? I can't wait to hear this.

Palmer: Why the hell didn't you tell me you can't add or subtract?
Leo: Excuse me?
Palmer: This P.R. Budget of yours for the Milan project, it's duck soup. If Homer in accounting hadn't caught the mistakes, it would have cost Cortland Electronics tens of thousands of dollars.
Leo: Good old Homer. That's what the bean counters are for, right?
David: Why don't we save this for the office, Palmer?
Palmer: That's a brilliant idea. Too bad he never sets foot there.
Leo: He exaggerates. I was just there last week.
Palmer: Yeah, to pick up a check.
Leo: Mother made it clear --
Palmer: Now listen, stepson or no, you are my employee, and Mama cannot protect you from the boss.
Vanessa: My, my, what a glorious surprise. All my three men in my life together.

Adam: They want you to testify under oath that I'm a terrible father.
Hayley: That's the idea. And I expect to be grilled for details.
Adam: Damn them.
Liza: This is not exactly a surprise. We knew that Leslie Coulson was going to ask Hayley to answer questions against you.
Hayley: Not "ask," "subpoena."
Adam: And if -- if the case went to trial, it wasn't supposed to go that far.
Liza: You didn't --
Adam: No, I did nothing. Except pray that this custody issue could be settled in a civilized fashion.
Liza: Is that why you continually want to antagonize Jake? Exactly who are you praying to?
Jack: All right, all right, folks, folks, let's just realize this case is not going to be settled out of court.
Liza: I'm just sorry that Hayley had to get dragged into this.
Hayley: Hey, it goes with the territory.
Liza: Is Hayley going to have to answer Leslie's questions?
Jack: What do you mean, plead the fifth instead? No, no, no, no. No. No, that sends a very, very damaging message.
Liza: Ok, I see. So Hayley is going to be forced to recount to Leslie how her father screwed up her life every chance he got. Oh, that's going to be a real crowd pleaser.
Adam: No, I'm not going to allow my daughter to be subjected to that kind of public scrutiny.
Jack: Adam, you don't have any choice.
Adam: You underestimate me, Jack. I know exactly how to keep my daughter off the stand.

Brooke: Oh, where are you off to?
Janet: Out.
Brooke: I think I could figure that much out without asking.
Janet: I'm just going to go to the Glamorama, take Tiffany up on that free manicure and paraffin hand dip.
Brooke: That sounds great. Did you have an appointment with Dr. Jaffe today?
Janet: Oh, Dr. Jaffe had a cancellation. I mean, she called and canceled.
Brooke: Really?
Janet: Yeah, yesterday when you were out.
Brooke: Did you make another appointment?
Janet: Why, you afraid I'm going to go bonkers if I miss a session? Brooke: I ju
st think that regular visits are the way to go.
Janet: Yes, I made an appointment. Can I be excused now?
Brooke: Look, you know, I'm just --
Janet: Brooke, I don't need constant supervision.
Brooke: I am not checking up on you.
Janet: Really? What do you call it? I mean, you're always eavesdropping on me, watching to see what new household appliance I'll start talking to, finding out where I'm going, when I'm coming back, what I'm doing.
Brooke: I'm just concerned, Janet.
Janet: You know, you've been great, but I really think it's time for you to go back to your own home. I'll be fine here without you.

[Telephone rings]

Brooke: Hello. Laura! Hi, sweetheart! How are you? Oh, I have been thinking about you so much. How's Beijing? What's the matter? What's the matter? Laura, slow down. Slow down. Are you -- are you all right? Listen -- no, no, no, no. Then I'm coming. No, no. Honey, no, you're not going to talk me out of it. That's what mothers are for, all right? I'll make the plans, and I'll call you as soon as I have my itinerary together. I'm coming, ok? All right, bye, sweetie.

Liza: You have a plan?
Adam: I'm going to have her admitted into Seaview.
Liza: The hospital?
Adam: Yes.
Hayley: I'm not sick.
Adam: There's a doctor I know. He's on the bank payroll of one of my factories. I say one word, we have you admitted as a patient until after the trial.
Hayley: That is absurd! You're sick. They should have you put into a mental institution.
Liza: Exactly who are you protecting? Are you protecting Hayley, or are you protecting yourself?
Adam: I'm trying to protect Hayley and Colby and you, Liza.
Liza: Listen, just think about this. They're accusing you of being a sleazy, manipulative control freak. So what do you do when the subpoena comes out in the open? You play a sleazy, manipulative control freak trick. Oh, that's brilliant, Adam.
Hayley: And typical. And there's no problem that a little lie can't fix. Am right? Am I right?
Jack: If Hayley doesn't appear, it's going to look like you have something to hide, all right? Now, just listen to me. This is a subpoena. You mess with this, you go to jail. You follow me?
Hayley: All right. I just wanted to let everyone know that I've been called to testify, and that's what I'm going to do. I'm out of here.
Adam: Wait, wait, wait --
Hayley: Please --
Adam: We have to prepare what you're going to say.
Jack: No, no, no. We cannot rehearse a propaganda speech on your wonderful fathering techniques. Anything Leslie Coulson brings up in that court is going to be a matter of public record.
Adam: She can answer everything truthfully] that doesn't mean she has to decimate me, does it?
Hayley: I'm just going to answer everything truthfully. Period.
Adam: Is there some reason we're trying to give Jake some more ammunition?
Liza: Adam, Hayley has to be truthful.
Adam: We're trying to get custody of Colby here. Nothing is more important than that.
Jack: Least of all the facts, huh, Adam?
Adam: The facts are that ever since she got out from under that drunken mother of hers, I've been trying to nurture her and prove to her how much I love her.
Liza: Adam, I want you to concentrate. Concentrate. You paid off a judge. You worked in the custody case for Mateo's son. You practically ruined her marriage.
Hayley: It's not the first time he paid someone to help.
Liza: I know that you wanted to protect her, ok? But you kept her a prisoner in this house.
Adam: That's not true. Liza there were witnesses to this, and they will say something whether Hayley testifies or not.
Adam: Everything that I have done has been for your benefit. Can't you at least admit that? Or am I just too monstrous?

Tad: All right, folks, come on. Let's get to it. First things first. I want Scott to go over the rundown. Where's Scott? He was just here.
Becca: He stepped out.
Tad: Well, tell me it's work-related.
Becca: Well, actually, he had to go home.
Tad: Home?
Becca: He said he'll be -- he'll be right back.
Tad: All right. Forget it. This isn't a production meeting, it's daycare. This is obviously a bust, folks. We'll just have to reconvene at the end of the day. Make sure everybody's here. Anybody who isn't -- just make sure you're here. Oh -- Becca, do me a favor. Go on, take off. Please make some phone calls. Try and find Leo for me.
Becca: Yes, you got it.
Tad: We can't do this without him.
Becca: Ok.

Tad: Well, that doesn't inspire too much confidence, does it?
Dixie: No, but at least it clears us up to find Stuart.
Tad: Come on.
Dixie: Where do you think we should start? I mean --
Tad: I thought we'd try the gatehouse and after that go to the gallery.
Dixie: Ok. Do you think Gillian is right? I mean, are we really doing the right thing, or are we stooping to Adam's level by going after him like this? I mean, maybe --
Tad: You think we should just let it go?
Dixie: Yeah.
Tad: Not a chance. You're with me?
Dixie: Always.

Stuart: Oh --
Tad: Stuart, we were just looking for you.
Stuart: I need your help. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't very important.
Tad: You need our help?
Stuart: Mm-hmm.
Tad: Well, then, my friend, as luck would have it, I think we are in a position to help each other. Everybody, take off. Go grab some coffee somewhere else.

Marian: Oh. Scott, what a surprise.
Scott: Marian.
Marian: Would you like some waffles? Your father made a fresh batch this morning.
Scott: No, thank you. I'm not hungry.
Marian: Oh. What's wrong, darling? Look, if you want to have one of those heart-to-hearts with your dad, I'm afraid he's just gone out.
Scott: I came here to speak to you.
Marian: Really? Ok. Well, what's on your mind?
Scott: I saw you at the Valley Inn last night.
Vanessa: Well, couldn't anyone have made a mistake like that?
Palmer: Not if they passed the fifth grade.
Vanessa: Oh, for heaven's sakes. Leo's been to the best schools.
Palmer: Did he ever go to class?
Vanessa: Well, maybe he was transferred a bit too much, but it really wasn't his fault.
Leo: Thank you, mother. Math was never really my subject.
Palmer: Well, any numskull can add or subtract. I mean, how on earth do you balance your checkbook? I should have known.
Vanessa: Well, all right. The mistake's been corrected. No harm done. I'm sure Leo will be very careful, much more careful the next time, won't you, darling?
Leo: Would you look at the time? I'm late for a meeting. I got to --
Palmer: Too bad you're not so conscientious about your duties at Cortlandt Electronics.
Leo: We'll chat soon.
David: Count on it.

Vanessa: Ah, you look dashing, darling. Really, Palmer. Do you have to scare Leo away like that?
Palmer: Leo doesn't scare that easily.
Vanessa: Well, don't be so hard on him. So he's not great at math. I mean, Einstein flunked the subject, and he was a genius.
Palmer: Well Leo's only genius is self-preservation.
Vanessa: Well, didn't he single-handedly close that Italian deal for you?
Palmer: Oh, yes. Oh, yes. The senora was so deeply impressed I'm beginning to wonder who gave her that massage at the Glamorama.
Vanessa: Oh, come on. Leo's been very helpful to you and loyal. He knows exactly how to keep his thoughts to himself, and that's a quality one can't learn exactly in a schoolroom.
David: For heaven's sake, Vanessa. Don't you even have a shred of guilt over what you've done to your son?

Scott: Look, I saw you and that guy at the bar together. Then I saw the two of you undressed.
Marian: Scott, I'm -- I honestly don't know what happened because I can't remember. I was with my client --
Scott: Don't tell me it was just business, all right?
Marian: He said he wanted to give me deposit. And he wanted to have one last toast. And we had the toast. And then all I remember is waking up in his bed alone. I think I must have had a blackout.
Scott: So you didn't know what you were doing and that makes it ok?
Marian: No, that doesn't make it ok.
Scott: You know, I really thought you'd changed when you married my father, Marian. But I guess I was just as deluded as him. You know, you're the same woman that everyone used to laugh at. How can I possibly tell Dad about this?
Marian: You won't have to.
Scott: Oh, well, I can't just keep it a secret.
Marian: I already told your father everything this morning.
Scott: Oh, poor Dad. Is that why he's not here?
Marian: You know, I'm beginning to think you don't know your father at all.
Scott: What?
Marian: I mean, we are so blessed to have Stuart in our lives because his love and faith in us is unshakable.
Scott: Marian, this is no time for you to be telling me about my dad's loyalty.
Marian: While you and others may have jumped to terrible conclusions about what happened, your father's love in me and in our marriage is so strong that he doesn't believe I was unfaithful to him.
Scott: It's called denial.
Marian: And he's gone out to look for that Paolo character to find out why he did what he did. And I just hope I deserve the faith that your father has in me.
Scott: Wait a minute. You mean dad thinks this might have been a setup, some kind of a scam?
Marian: Well, think about it. I -- I didn't have much to drink and yet I passed out, and obviously that Paolo character wasn't interested in buying a house. He has simply vanished. You got to the hotel and the door was ajar. I -- I don't know.
Scott: Like somebody had done it on purpose. But -- but -- who would want you to be seen like that?

Hayley: I have to go.
Adam: Hayley. I admit I haven't been a perfect father. But never doubt that I love you.
Hayley: I don't. I fear it.
Liza: Adam --
Adam: Hayley, I can't believe you mean that. I'm not asking you to get up there on the stand and lie. I'm asking you -- I'm begging you maybe to try to remember that everything I've done for you has been to try to help you and protect you because I love you. And I swear I will be a better father to Colby because of the things I've learned from you. Please, please. Please say you'll help me.
Liza: Um, why don't we just save this talk for a little while? I mean, I don't think any decision needs to be made today.
Liza: We'll talk some other time?
Jack: Adam, let me try to make myself clear. We are trying to develop a defense so strong that not even revelations of your past can endanger us. I need to make a few phone calls. I have to try to undo what Leslie Coulson's already got started.
Liza: Why don't you use Adam's study. You'll have some privacy.
Jack: Yeah, thank you.

Adam: If I had been allowed to tell the truth about being Colby's father, none of this would be happening.
Liza: You can't blame Hayley or Jack or Jake. You and you alone are responsible for this.
Adam: I will not lose Colby. I will not. We'll have to do something.
Liza: You will do nothing. You are the reason we are in this hell.

Stuart: Marian didn't do anything wrong.
Tad: Well, maybe she didn't mean to do anything wrong. Blackouts are serious. People do all kinds of crazy things after too many martinis.
Stuart: No, no, no, no, no. I'm saying she's innocent. Whoever did this to her is a dirty, rotten scoundrel.
Dixie: You think she was set up?
Stuart: Yes.
Tad: Well, do you have any proof?
Stuart: I will -- if you guys help me find out who this Paolo is.
Dixie: Paolo? Us?
Stuart: Yeah. We investigated stuff together before. I bet we could solve this. Will you help me?
Tad: Well, actually, I know we do make a good team. And to tell you the truth, that's the reason that Dixie and I were coming to see you.
Stuart: You need my help?
Tad: Yeah. We'll fill you in later. What do you say we go find this scoundrel before the trail gets cold?
Stuart: Yeah. He checked into the Valley Inn. Let's start there.
Tad: That's as good a place as any. Let's go.

Tad: Well, if it isn't the invisible man.
Leo: At your command.
Tad: Obviously not. You missed the meeting.
Leo: You wouldn't believe --
Tad: You know something, Leo? You're right. I wouldn't. As a matter of fact, as soon as' I get back, we're going to have a little talk about your future in television. So do yourself a favor -- don't go anywhere.

Becca: Where have you been? Tad had me calling all over town for you. He's not very happy right now.
Leo: I gathered.
Becca: You already saw him?
Leo: Yeah, he just took off with Stuart and Dixie.
Becca: Oh. Well, I guess I'll go, too.
Leo: Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Becca: What's this?
Leo: A peace offering. Take it.
Becca: A watch.
Leo: Yeah, it keeps perfect time.
Becca: So does the one I have.
Leo: This one makes a statement.
Becca: It's beautiful, really. But you're trying to buy me off.
Leo: Why do you always think the worst of me?
Becca: I don't know what to think.
Leo: I just want to apologize for the kiss, that's all.
Becca: Oh. Yeah, I totally forgot about that. I'm actually -- I'm more interested in your friend.
Leo: My friend?
Becca: Yeah. You know, the guy that was with Marian. I saw you two talking. And then I found you in his room.
Leo: He's not my friend. I already told you that. I was giving him directions to the men's room. His room was right next to David's. It was purely coincidence that I found Marian there.
Becca: That's highly unlikely, especially when you're involved.
Leo: Did you tell Scott?
Becca: Why? Should I? I mean, I don't know what you lied about or why. Unless you want to tell me.
Leo: And end the air of mystery that makes me so intriguing?
Becca: Look, you want to tell me the truth, I'll listen. But until that moment, please don't waste my time.

Brooke: Oh, hi.
Hayley: Hi.
Brooke: Good, you're here.
Hayley: Why? What's wrong?
Brooke: Well, Laura called.
Hayley: From China?
Brooke: From China, yeah. She was in a little bit of an accident. Hayley: Oh, Brook
e. Is it serious?
Brooke: I don't think it's terribly serious. She hurt her back. She swears that she's getting around all right. But, you know, I don't know what kind of medical care they have available there.
Hayley: Oh, poor thing.
Brooke: I know. She's being very brave. But I'm not going to feel good if I don't go and make sure that she's ok.
Hayley: No, you go. Can I help you pack?
Brooke: No, I'm done. My plane leaves in two hours.
Hayley: Well, you better go, then. Hurry.
Brooke: Well, it's not quite that simple.
Hayley: Janet.
Brooke: Yeah. She's just -- she's been very hostile. And I'm sure she's going to be thrilled that I'm leaving. I just feel bad because Trevor wanted me to, you know, keep an eye out on her and Amanda.
Hayley: Uncle Pork Chop would never expected to stay here with Laura needing you in China. You go. As of now, I'm officially in charge.
Brooke: Well, listen, what about Mateo? I know the two of you just got back together again.
Hayley: He understands. Really. Go. It'll be ok. Go, go. You got a plane to catch. Come on.
Brooke: All right. All right. Thank you.
Hayley: Sure.
Brooke: Thank you. And how can I thank you?
Hayley: Oh, my gosh. Well, just by giving Laura my love.
Brooke: Oh, thank you.
Hayley: Let me get the door for you, ok?
Brooke: All right. Are you all right?
Hayley: Yes, I am. Go.
Brooke: You sure?
Hayley: Yeah.
Brooke: Thank you.
Hayley: Catch that plane.
Brooke: Thank you. I really appreciate this.
Hayley: Ok.
Brooke: Bye-bye, sweetie.
Hayley: Bye.

Palmer: Don't you ever tire of insulting your mother?
Vanessa: Please, Palmer. I'm used to it.
David: Cut the martyr act, mother. I thought my life was a travesty until I met my not-so-little brother. I actually feel sorry for him.
Vanessa: Oh, yes, poor Leo's been exposed to the best of everything. As were you. The difference is he appreciates it. You want to denigrate me for it every step of the way.
David: You don't get it, do you? Because of your supreme selfishness, your darling Leo isn't prepared to do anything in this life other than be your lap dog. He has no education, no basic skills beyond what you taught him -- how to charm people into picking up the tab for his lifestyle.
Palmer: That'll do, that'll do.
David: He has no sense of responsibility, no initiative whatsoever --
Vanessa: Palmer, just please give us a moment, would you, so I can speak with David?
Palmer: Gladly. Next time, I'm going to marry an orphan. No children, no dogs, no animals. Not so much as a guppy.

Vanessa: And just what has made you Leo's champion all of a sudden? Boredom? Perversity? Or is it that you see just a little bit too much of yourself in your little brother?
David: He's nothing like me. He's utterly useless, thanks to you.
Vanessa: And you're so useful. A world-renowned cardiologist with Erica Kane on your arm. Oh, what's going to happen when Erica no longer has any use for you?
David: What Erica does is none of your business.
Vanessa: Or yours? Did you get left out? What, you feeling a little needy? Now you want take it all out on me?

Tad: Well, thank you very much for your help.
Man: Come to think of it, that Caselli character did seem a bit off. If there's anything else --
Tad: Oh, yeah --
Stuart: I got it, I got it. I got it.
Dixie: So, it seems that this Paolo Caselli checked out last night and took the first flight to Rome.
Stuart: He told Marian he wanted to buy a house.
Tad: But after he got her in a compromising position --
Stuart: He just took off and left no forwarding address.
Tad: Well, I got to agree with you, Stuart. I think this has got stink all over it.
Stuart: Yeah. Well, what do we do now?
Tad: Find out what's going on.
Dixie: Follow the big man.
Tad: Hey, Adrian, it's me. Listen, I want to do a background check on a foreigner. Can you help me out? An Italian. Yeah. By the name of Paolo Caselli. C-a-s-e-l-l-i. About 10 minutes ago. Why? I'll hold.

Vanessa: Did you and Erica have a little tiff?
David: The subject is you and Leo.
Vanessa: And you made yourself perfectly clear you want nothing to do with this family. So I don't think it's any of your business.
David: No, no, no. It is definitely my business, from the day that you swanned into this town clutching your heart and your poor runt followed.
Vanessa: He's hardly a runt, David.
David: Well, he certainly isn't nobility, either.
Vanessa: He is. And I told you --
David: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You told me and everybody else the sad tale of how the nobleman loved you and dumped you. Unfortunately, it was just a fairy tale. And a mediocre one at that.
Vanessa: It's true.
David: You know, I've collected all kinds of proof regarding Leo's life with you, mother. The one remaining mystery -- the identity of his supposedly aristocratic father.
Vanessa: He is a very important man, and I refuse to expose him to scandal.
David: At the risk of gaining something for yourself? Oh I don't think so. Come on, Mom. Who really knocked you up?
Vanessa: You can be so crass. I'm not even going to dignify that with an answer.

Tad: Yeah, thanks. Right up, bro. Love doing that to him. Anyway, this Paolo, he appears he wasn't the millionaire he claimed to be.
Dixie: Oh, well, why am I not surprised.
Tad: Two-bit gigolo. He comes on to women and gets their money any way he can, including theft, blackmail, and pick pocketing, if you can believe it.
Stuart: He ought to be in jail.
Tad: Well, he's been arrested. He's never been prosecuted. None of his victims want to press charges. It's too embarrassing.
Dixie: It sounds like Marian was definitely set up.
Stuart: Oh, I knew it. I knew it. This means so much to me and to Marian. To both of us. Thank you. I got to go -- I'm going to go tell her.
Tad: No, no, wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Stuart: What?
Tad: It's time for you to help us, my friend, remember?
Stuart: You want me to help you? What do you want me to do?
Tad: We want you to tell us a secret.
Stuart: What do you mean?
Tad: Your brother's secret, Stuart. The one that could send Adam and Liza to jail.

Scott: She said she blacked out even though she'd barely had anything to drink.
Becca: Maybe she was drugged.
Scott: Yeah. That's what Dad's trying to find out.
Becca: Who would do something like this?
Scott: I don't know. Look, if I'd gone to my dad, I would have really messed things up.
Becca: But you didn't.
Scott: Yeah. Thing are going to be ok.
Becca: Mm-hmm.
Scott: Because of you. I owe you everything.
Becca: Maybe we can just have another midnight dance, just the two of us.
Scott: I got to go. My dad might need my help.
Becca: Mm-hmm.
Scott: If Paolo's still around, I --
Becca: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Scott: Ok?
Becca: Ok. Bye.
Scott: Thanks again. Bye.
Becca: Bye. Wait. You do have to come back for the production meeting.
Scott: Right.

Leo: Hi, Becca.
Becca: Hi.
Leo: I'm glad you're still here I want to start over.
Becca: Maybe. But you have to answer two questions.

Vanessa: Just stop it. You turn one of the most tragic events of my life into a joke?
David: No, no, no, no. I'm not joking. I want to know. I really do. You tell me who Leo's father is, and I promise you it'll be our little secret.

Stuart: There is no secret.
Dixie: Come on. We know that it's about Colby and that it involves fraud.
Stuart: How could you know that?
Tad: Adam.
Stuart: He didn't tell you that.
Tad: No. No, it's true. I overheard him talking to Liza.
Stuart: Well, maybe you misunderstood.
Dixie: Stuart, do you remember a couple of months ago you pretended to be Adam? You remember how you told td that you did it for Colby's sake? What did you mean by that?
Stuart: Because I love her.
Dixie: You love her so much you did things that you would never do -- you posed as Adam, you signed checks, you committed fraud. I mean, for whatever reason that you did that, that must have been a pretty important reason.
Stuart: I love my brother, too.
Tad: Of course you do. We know that, Stuart. But we got a lot of pieces of this puzzle. We're getting real close to the truth, and we're worried because we know whatever Adam did was destructive, not just for him and Liza but for Jake and Colby. And we don't want them to get hurt.
Stuart: I don't, either.
Tad: So tell us. Come on, Stuart. What did Adam do?
Stuart: Adam -- Adam's not bad. Everything he's done he's done because how much he loves Liza. She's his life. And to think that she's going to have a child with another man was more than he could bear. He just wanted to do -- do something.
Tad: What do you mean?
Stuart: I got to go.

Tad: What did he say?
Dixie: He said he couldn't stand the thought of her having a child with another man. It was more than he could bear.
Tad: Come on.

Janet: Hey. Did I just see Brooke leaving in a cab?
Hayley: Yeah. Yeah. Laura called.
Janet: Really? How is she? Is she coming home?
Hayley: No, she hurt her back.
Janet: Oh, no. Is she all right? Is there anything I can do?
Hayley: No, Brooke just went to go to be with her.
Janet: In China?
Hayley: Yeah.
Janet: Good. I mean that Laura will have someone with her there.
Hayley: Yeah, well, it's -- you know, it's awful being all alone when you need someone, you know.
Janet: Hayley, what's the matter? There's something more than Laura, isn't there? What's wrong?
Hayley: Nothing.
Janet: I'm not moving till you tell me what it is.
Hayley: I got subpoenaed today to testify against Adam at Jake's custody hearing.
Janet: Oh.
Hayley: Adam's furious.
Janet: I bet. I mean, after all he's done to you, it's not going to be pretty.
Hayley: He knows. He offered to have me checked into some hospital until the trial was over.
Janet: Well, that sounds like Adam.
Hayley: You know, I'm beginning to think that he's right. You know, I think it's not such a bad idea. Maybe I'll just check myself into a hospital until this whole thing blows over, you know?
Janet: Hayley, it's not like you to hide. You got me, ok?
Hayley: Thanks.

[Knock on door]

Janet: Whoever that is, they've got lousy timing.
Hayley: Who is it?
Janet: It's --
Arlene: Your mother.

Vanessa: You are heartless.
David: I guess it runs in the family. Why all the drama, mother? Come on. Who is Leo's father?
Vanessa: You know, David, I take a lot from you, more than any other mother could possibly bear. The identity of Leo's father is of limits. Do you understand?

Leo: Yes, I bought the watch with my own money. And, no, I'm not trying to buy you off.
Becca: You know, you have all the answers. But I want the truth.
Leo: Just give it a whirl.
Becca: Ok. Did you arrange for Paolo to seduce Marian?
Leo: You don't mess around, do you?
Becca: Did you help him drug her?

[Doorbell rings]

Liza: Not now.
Tad: Now Liza.
Liza: Look, whatever it is, I don't have time.
Tad: Yes, you do.
