ALL MY CHILDREN

FEBRUARY 15, 2002

PREVIOUSLY ON - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Brooke: Your daddy's planning a surprise for me?
Maddie: You're not supposed to know.

David: I understand Vanessa's been released.
Leo: You think she's, what, some kind of a --
David: Monster? Yeah, that's exactly what I believe. She's more dangerous now than ever.

Vanessa: Greenlee, you don't look so well at all.
Greenlee: What are you --
Vanessa: What am I going to do with you, Dear? If I told you, that would spoil everything, wouldn't it?

TODAY'S - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Brooke: Well. This is different.
Edmund: Yeah, that's what I was hoping for.
Brooke: The beach at night -- in February.
Edmund: You know, this may be a first.
Brooke: It is for me.
Edmund: You know, most guys labor over this sort of thing.
Brooke: What sort of thing would that be?
Edmund: The time, the setting, the place, the mood.
Brooke: The wind-chill factor?
Edmund: Things were going a little too smoothly back at the house.
Brooke: Do you have something against heating and indoor plumbing?
Edmund: Brooke, if you don't stop talking the plumbing and the indoor -- you're going to totally mess with my Zen.
Brooke: What is your Zen tonight, exactly? Oh, boy.
Edmund: Brooke, you know, you read about people who -- who come together after years and years of being apart. That's not exactly us because we've been living parallel lives for -- for years. You know what else they say? They say two parallel lines can never meet. Guess that's why I never liked math.
Brooke: Oh.
Edmund: I want to grow old with you, Brooke. But I want to live every second until then like it's our last.
Brooke: Oh, Edmund.
Edmund: I love you, Brooke. Will you marry me?

Leo: Dangerous? Lethal? What, do you really think that Vanessa has --
David: Leo, Leo, don't act like this is a new discovery, please.
Leo: I'm not. But you're like -- you're saying -- look, Larry wasn't killed, ok? The coroner said that he died of a massive heart attack. We can't blame our mother for that.
[Phone rings]
Anna: Sorry.

Leo: Tell me what this is really all about.
David: All right, listen to me, there's something I have to tell you about our mother that you don't know.
Leo: Ok.
David: She knows about a drug that can induce a heart attack.
Leo: Come again?
David: All right, you remember when I was in the hospital, I mean, as a patient when I messed up my hand hitting that wall?
Leo: Yeah, where's this going?
David: Do you remember that or don't you?
Leo: Yeah, of course I remember. It was during that whole Libidozone fiasco. Leslie Coulson tried to kill you, for God's sakes.
David: Exactly, exactly. Now, I was trying to stay out of jail, ok? Vanessa was visiting me one day and they were about five minutes from transferring me to a state penitentiary. I asked our mother to get her hands on a drug for me and she did.
Leo: How?
David: I gave her a key to the med-- what does it matter how? Don't you get -- the point here is that our mother knows how to induce a heart attack.
Leo: What?
David: Yes, I asked her to put a small dose into my IV. It -- it bought me time, ok? It kept me from being transferred.
Leo: So there's a drug out there that can actually induce a heart attack and make people die?
David: As an overdose, absolutely. And listen to me, Leo, this drug once it's induced leaves no traceable residue whatsoever. It's perfect for what happened to Larry.
Leo: Really? That's great.
David: Yeah.
Leo: That's just great. You know, I'm just thrilled that our mother has access to a drug that can actually make people die. This is ridiculous. I'm sorry that you told me. I'm sorry that I even came by here, David.
David: Leo --
Leo: No, I mean it, I meant it. All this adds up to is lost time for me and Greenlee, and I'm not going to let that happen anymore..
David: All right, so you're saying that all you can care about right now is, what, is Greenlee?
Leo: Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying, and I should have said it a hell of a long time ago.
David: All right, fine, if that's true, then you might want to hear what I have to say.
Leo: About what?
David: About your fiancée.

[Vanessa listens to Jake's message on Greenlee's phone]
Jake's voice: Greenlee, it's Jake. Listen, I need you. I need to see you right away. Just meet me at the beach at 9:00. It's about your father.
Vanessa: Oh, why can't everything be this easy?
[Vanessa grabs some of Greenlee's summer clothes and starts packing]
Vanessa: Oh, good heavens. Don't tell me -- tell me you actually wear this out in public. Where do you think you are, Rio? I suppose it's my fault, partly. Did encourage Leo from a very early age to seduce all fools born to money.
[Vanessa chuckles]
Vanessa: Oh, well. Next time out, I'll find you some blue blood instead of this Eurotrash.

Leo: Oh, this is beautiful, really. She have an opinion about Greenlee, too?
Anna: What about Greenlee?
David: What? What is this?
Leo: You know what this is. You stay the hell out out of my life, David. I can't even believe that I'm trying to be rational with you!
David: What, you call this being rational?
Leo: You live in the woods in some cabin like a mad scientist, for God's sake, and I don't even want to know what this is all about. But once again, it just proves to me that the closer I get to you and your secrets and our mother and hers, the worse my life gets.
David: Why do you always think the worst of me?
Leo: I was halfway out the door when you tell me I need to know something about Greenlee!
David: And you assume it's something bad, right?
Leo: Fine, what is it? Tell me.
Anna: She called here.
Leo: Greenlee called here?
Anna: Yeah. To tell David that the charges against your mother were dropped. She seemed very upset. Right?
David: Right.
Leo: When was this?
Anna: A little while ago.
Leo: I -- I was just with Greenlee a little -- I shouldn't even be here. I should be with Greenlee. I have a year's worth of making up to do to that girl. It's a real nice family you're getting to know, isn't it?
Anna: I don't scare easily.
Leo: Yeah, well, neither does Greenlee. This is more than even she can handle. How about you?
[Leo heads back to the loft]

David: Is it?
Anna: Is it what?
David: Is dealing with my family to be with me -- is it too much?

[A dazed Greenlee comes to and jumps on Vanessa]
Vanessa: You little parasite! Did you scratch me? Am I bleeding? Huh?
Greenlee: I wish.
Vanessa: Oh, you -- you think I'm a joke, don't you? You think you're better. You think you can win over me? You think you can take my son from me?
Greenlee: Let me --
Vanessa: Let you what? What? You want to walk? You want to go? Well, Darling, let me tell you something, you wouldn't get very far even if I keeled over dead right here because I happen to have the constitution of a bull.

Greenlee: You're crazy! Vanessa: Yes, I am, I am. And I'm also much smarter than you! To think I once supported the idea of Leo going after you and your money.
Greenlee: He doesn't want my money.
Vanessa: Of course not. I know, I know, I know. You actually had him believing for five minutes that he was in love with you. But let tell you something, Darling, that's impossible. There is no love in this family. We aren't capable of it. So we satisfy ourselves in other -- we compensate with other lucrative forms of fun.
Greenlee: Please --
Vanessa: What? What? What? Will you stop begging? Otherwise, you are going to go off to sea, my dear, gagged and -- wait.
[Greenlee passes out]
Vanessa: Don't you go away from me. Don't you go away from me. You come -- I still need you!

[Vanessa dials her cell phone]
Vanessa: Are you ready? Well, then move faster. Yes, we haven't much time.
[Vanessa talks to a unconscious Greenlee]
Vanessa: Blinking idiot. Well. Of course, you haven't had time to do all the proper cruise shopping, but this will just have to do.

Edmund: Brooke?
Brooke: No.
Edmund: No?
Brooke: No, not -- no, I mean --
Edmund: Not no? Not no?
Brooke: Yes. Oh, God, Edmund.
Edmund: You had me scared to death.
Brooke: I can't believe this.
Edmund: You like the ring?
Brooke: Oh, forget the ring! Kiss me.
Edmund: You really want me to forget the ring?
Brooke: What, are you nuts? Oh. Oh, my. Oh.
Edmund: It looks beautiful.
Brooke: Look, it fits perfectly.
Edmund: So do we. I love you, Brooke, more than I can say.
Brooke: Oh, Edmund, I love you, too.
Brooke: Did you have second thoughts?
Edmund: No. No. No, I just -- I just thought I would do this, you know, with the kids and Aunt Phoebe.
Brooke: Oh, no.
Edmund: Well, I did, you know. We're going to be a huge family and all. And then I just thought that would be kind of taking the romance out of it by using, you know, kids, your son, and Dolly Levi to help us out.
Brooke: I'm so glad you reconsidered.
Edmund: Me, too. I did ask your son, Jamie, though.
Brooke: You asked my son what?
Edmund: If he'd be ok if I married you.
Brooke: You asked my son for permission to marry me?
Edmund: Yeah, would have grounded him if he said no, but he was pretty cooperative.
Brooke: He's just a softy underneath it all, you know?
Edmund: He loves you. You know, my kids are still on the ceiling since I told them that I was going to do this.
Brooke: Really?
Edmund: Yeah, will they ever come down?
Brooke: Eventually, yeah.
Brooke: You know, we have a lot of things to think about. We have to decided where we're going to live and, you know, ground rules for the kids and -- make me stop.
Edmund: Stop.
Brooke: Make me stop. Better.
Edmund: Brooke --
Brooke: I'm right there with you. Come on, let's go, future husband and slave.
Edmund: Sure you're ready to go?
Brooke: Edmund, as long as I am with you, I don't care where we go.

Anna: Yes, it's true, a smarter woman would have run screaming from this cabin.
David: You happen to be the smartest woman I know.
Anna: Oh, it's ok. You already have me. You can ease up on the flattery.
David: Are you sure I have you, Anna?
Anna: What are you asking?
David: Well, you already know that my mother's out of her mind.
Anna: She may well be, yeah.
David: Believe me, it's not news. I've known it since I was 12. And then she shows up here practically stalking me. I made a vow to myself, you know, that I was going to get involved, that no matter what happened, that if she wanted to hang herself, let her.
Anna: She's your mother. Only so much detachment can work, right?
David: So what do I do?
Anna: About Vanessa?
David: Yeah.
Anna: What do you want to do?
David: Well, you said yourself that there's only so much detachment you can have with a parent, right? So if she's insane, if she's homicidal, what, do I stand by and not do anything? Don't I have some kind of responsibility?
Anna: What, to have her committed?
David: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I'm asking.
Anna: David I think you have a bigger problem than that.
David: What, than having a sociopath for a mother?
Anna: Yeah, but you could end up in jail. You do know that?

[Leo arrives back at the loft]
Leo: Greenlee? Hey, I'm so sorry it took me so long. I got some champagne. Greenlee?
[Leo reads a message on Greenlee's computer]
Leo: "I'm sorry it had --"
Leo: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
[Leo listens to Jake's message]
Jake's voice: Greenlee, it's Jake. Listen, I need you. I need to see you right away. Just meet me at the beach at 9:00.
Leo: "It had to be --" it had to be this way with Jake?

[Meanwhile, back at the beach -Vanessa appears dragging Greenlee]
Vanessa: Thank God those two finally left. Could go into insulin shock listening to them. [As Brooke] "I don't care where I go as long as I go with you, Edmund."
[Jake sees Vanessa and Greenlee]
Jake: Greenlee?
Vanessa: [Normal voice] oh, right on time.
Jake: Green-- hey, I've been looking for you. What's going on?
Vanessa: Oh, Jake, Jake, she drank too much. She insisted that I bring her here.
Jake: Greenlee! Greenlee!
Vanessa: Oh, gracious, she's just passed out completely, hasn't she?
Jake: She's not drunk. Greenlee, what happened to you? Greenlee?
[Vanessa injects drugs into Jake's neck]
Jake: Green-- ah!

Leo: Oh, Greenlee. Your -- your suitcase is gone. Your summer clothes are -- what, you went on a cruise or something?

[Leo remembers]
Greenlee: Wow. Jake: Yeah.
Greenlee: Part of me just wants to sail away with you, Jake.

Leo: No. No freaking way.

Vanessa: Works quickly, doesn't it, doctor?
Jake: You drugged -- what the hell are you doing?
Vanessa: Don't try to speak. Your words will just start slurring and you may start drooling. Preserve your dignity. She didn't have any left, so it was a moot point.
Jake: What do you want?
Vanessa: But you, you have respect -- what do I want? I want to level the field, my dear. You tried to destroy my David. Though why I'm bothering to help that ungrateful son of mine -- oh, well, you just can't turn off a mother's instincts, can you, like a faucet.
Jake: What do you want? What the hell did you do to Greenlee?
Vanessa: I told you, I tried to level the playing field. She tried to take Leo from me, and nobody takes my son from me, especially not without asking me and without asking my guidance of how to do it!
Jake: What do you want from us, Vanessa?
Vanessa: Nothing! That's why I'm doing this.
Jake: You stupid woman.
Vanessa: Oh, you know, I believe it is rude to insult your executioner. Don't you get it straight yet that I have the power to let you die easily or horribly?
Jake: David -- David --
Vanessa: Yes, my David. You tried to destroy him. See, I made him better than all of you. Only problem is he has a bit too much of his father in him, so all my energy right now is focused on Leo.
Jake: Ok, ok, Vanessa. Take me. Take me. Don't -- please just leave Greenlee.
Vanessa: You fool, what do you think? The one with the most merit badges isn't dead? He's still dead. Both of you. Fools. Fools.

David: So you think Jake wanting to throw me in jail a real threat?
Anna: He wants you ruined.
David: Oh, I know that.
Anna: And he has to power to do it. Now that he's been up to this place, he knows what's going on here. David, he's a straight arrow. He's not going to let this go.
David: He has nothing concrete, Anna.
Anna: But he will. And when he does, how soon after that do you think it'll be before he brings the police up here with a warrant for your arrest?
David: I'm trying to find a medical cure. It's not biological warfare.
Anna: No, I know you're not that naive. You would lose everything, David, including your hold on the patent, if you do ever get this cure approved the standard way, and that patent could bring you hundreds of millions of dollars.
David: Yeah, I know --
Anna: But Jake isn't going to stop there. He's going to make certain that you lose your license to practice. And I know -- believe me, I know how much it means to you to have the ability to practice.
David: I am not going to be an alarmist. I refuse to do that.
Anna: Ok, then I will be. You have too many things conspiring against you, David -- Jake's desire to have you destroyed, your mother's erratic --
David: All right, all right, all right. Then what do you want me to do?
Anna: I want you to look after yourself more carefully.
David: Why?
Anna: What do you -- you have ask me that?
David: I don't know. Do I?
Anna: Oh, you are just so difficult to deal with.
David: Look, I'm just trying to keep things in line here, ok? It's very difficult!
Anna: Is this about Dixie?
David: Oh, no, don't! Look, please don't -- what does Dixie have to do with any of this? She's not a part of this conversation!
Anna: That's right, she's not.
David: All right, so why are you being this way?
Anna: Because I feel like I am watching you slowly unspool.
David: Anna, listen to me --
Anna: No, wait, when I went in the other room, what did you say to Leo about your mother? What did you say to him?
David: I -- I said to him that despite the fact that I believe that Vanessa's not guiltless regarding Larry that I think we should just let it go, ok? That's what I told him.
Anna: Yeah, well, you do know that he believes you're conspiring against your mother?
David: Where is this going? First you tell me to watch my back with Jake because I'm going to end up in jail, and now it's my brother. What? What?
Anna: Bottom line -- you have to think about yourself first and foremost. If you don't, you're going to lose your job, your career, your reputation, your family -- gone.
David: And what about you?
Anna: Would that really matter to you?

[Car approaches]
[Car doors close]
Jamie: Everyone, look casual. Quick, this is it.
Brooke: Ahem.
Jamie: Hey, Mom.
Brooke: Hey.
Edmund: Hey. Wow, look at you guys -- reading, coloring.
Phoebe: Quiet night. How about you two?
Brooke: Oh, very quiet.
Edmund: Nothing special.
Brooke: Oh, you know, oh, I think I'm so tired, I'm going to go right up to bed.
Edmund: Yeah, me, too. I think I'll take the kids and go home. It's -- it's too quiet here. It's creeping me out.
Jamie: All right, cut it out.
Sam: Hey!
Maddie: What did she say?
Edmund: "She" who, Honey?
Maddie: When you wear this ring, that means yes, right?
Sam: Does it, Daddy?
Edmund: Does it, Brooke?
Brooke: Yeah, it does.
[Kids cheer]
Jamie: You did it right, right?
Brooke: Oh, he did it great, Honey. Did you guys honestly think I'd say no to this guy, hmm?
Maddie: Daddy said it was up to you.
Sam: And he said sometimes things don't always go the way you plan.
Brooke: Well, you know what -- sometimes they do.
Edmund: Here you go, Aunt Phoebe. If the kids are going into sugar shock, you're going right with them.
Phoebe: Thank you, Darling.

Edmund: Well, your Aunt Phoebe looks very happy.
Brooke: She is biting back an "I told you so" so hard that her head is vibrating.
Edmund: Here, practice for the wedding. Good?
Brooke: Mmm, great. I promise you I am not going to be one of those brides that smashes the cake in the groom's face.
Edmund: That would be nasty.
Brooke: Yeah. But then I would kiss it all off.
Edmund: That would be nastier.
Brooke: Mm-hmm. Are you still glad that we came home tonight?
Edmund: Yes -- to a point.
Brooke: I want to be with you tonight.
Edmund: I need to be with you tonight.
Brooke: So how are we going to pull this off without anyone knowing what we're trying to pull off? Oh, you know, that beach and the freezing cold is not such a bad idea after all.
Edmund: Mm-hmm. Give me time, English, I'll work this out.
Brooke: Make it snappy, Honey. I mean it.

David: Look, if I didn't want you around, you wouldn't even be here right now.
Anna: Sometimes you just bowl me over with all that romance.
David: Well, what do you want me to say, Anna? You want me to tell you lies, is that it?
Anna: Fine. Anyway, you should take better care of your interests, that's all.
David: Oh, that's new. Nobody's ever accused me of not putting myself first, that's for sure.
Anna: Probably because it's the only time that you haven't.
David: How do you know that everything I do isn't somehow connected with me helping myself?
Anna: Because I see you taking risks with things I know matter to you.
David: Ok.
Anna: I don't why, but you are.
David: And when did you become such an expert on me?
Anna: I don't know.
David: Can I ask you something?
Anna: Please.
David: Why do you care?
Anna: About you?
David: Yeah.
Anna: Because you -- I -- you're unique, you know? Unique.
David: I'm unique? In general or to you?
[Phone rings]
Anna: I know you're dying to get that.

David: Hello?
Woman: Dr. Hayward?
David: Elizabeth?
Woman: Yes.
Anna: Elizabeth?
David: Yeah, what is it?
Elizabeth: You told me to call you if I saw anything.
David: Ok, and did you?
Elizabeth: I tried to stop him, but he wasn't listening.
David: Who?
Elizabeth: Dr. Martin. He was in your office again, Dr. Hayward.
David: Did you follow him in?
Elizabeth: I did, and I gave him hell the whole time, but he wasn't even hearing me.
David: I assume he wanted to look at my files.
Elizabeth: He didn't just want to. He told me to get back to my patients. I told him that if he was going to break into another doctor's office I had the right to know what he was looking for.
David: Good for you. And what did he say?
Elizabeth: He said, "fine, tell Dr. Hayward I found what I wanted under 's' for 'Smythe.'"
David: I see.
Elizabeth: Dr. Hayward? David?
David: Elizabeth, listen to me -- I'm not going to forget that you did this. Thank you.

David: Well, you were right.
Anna: Which part?
David: About Jake. He went looking for proof.
Anna: Did he get it?
Leo: Greenlee! Greenlee, are you here? Jake, you son of a bitch, if you can hear me, you'd better bring her back here!
Leo: Greenlee, no! How -- how can you do this? Why now? She left me for Jake?

Phoebe: Lead the way, Jamie.
Jamie: You guys owe me one.

Edmund: Brooke?
Brooke: Yes?
Edmund: Turn around. Magic.
Brooke: Holy cow. Where did they all go?
Edmund: I think I caught Jamie's eye as he was wheeling Phoebe out.
Brooke: Do you think we need to tuck in Sam and Maddie?
Edmund: Not tonight.
Brooke: My son is my hero.
Edmund: Hey, what about me?
Brooke: You are my hero, too.
Brooke: Edmund, this is the most wonderful night of my life.
Edmund: It won't be the last.
Brooke: You promise me that, ok?
Edmund: I do.
Brooke: No, I mean it, I mean it, because I promise it for you, too. I mean, you know, like, if we're working on a deadline for "Tempo" and, you know, we're holding one of the kids' heads over the john and the other one is spiking a fever, I promise you, and I want us to promise each other, that we will think of this moment. Ok?
Edmund: Ok.
Brooke: I love you so much that my hair hurts.
Edmund: Want me to kiss it and make it better?
Brooke: Can you try?
Edmund: Yeah.
Brooke: Oh, you're good.
Edmund: I know I am.
Brooke: I love you. And I can't wait to be married to you.
Edmund: I love you. And I will always take care of you, Brooke.

Anna: So this Elizabeth -- whoever she is -- what does she know about Jake?
David: Elizabeth is a nurse at the hospital. She promised to keep an eye on my office while I was away.
Anna: But what did she say?
David: She said that Jake went looking through my files. She -- she kept him distracted and he lost interest.
Anna: Oh, well, I doubt that.
David: Well, whatever she said, whatever she did, he moved on.
Anna: He didn't get anything from your office?
David: No. No, everything was gone. Whatever matters I brought here.
Anna: Are you sure?
David: Yeah.
Anna: What are you thinking?
David: I'm just thinking that -- that it's been a long time since I trusted someone.
Anna: And?
David: And even though it's volatile sometimes --
Anna: Oh, it's a chemical reaction, I think.
David: It's become more than that for me, Anna.
Anna: Yeah, me, too.
David: This is so weird. But I do trust you, Anna.
Anna: That's a good thing.
David: And why is that?
Anna: Realistically, what choice do you have? I know all your secrets, right?
David: Yeah. Yeah, you certainly do.
Leo: To hell with you, Greenlee. You and Jake deserve each other.

[Jake wakes up to find that he and Greenlee are on a leaking boat]
Jake: Greenlee. Greenlee, we're ok. Ok, we're ok. Greenlee? Greenlee, get up. We got to get up! Greenlee! Greenlee! Greenlee, you got to get up! Wake up! We're sinking! We've got to get out of here! Greenlee!

ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Kendall: Ryan, who did this and what did they do with Hayley?

Chris: I know you're no drug runner. Why don't you work with me to prove it?

Vanessa: Get out your passport, Darling. We leave for Spain tonight.

Jake: Greenlee, you cannot go to sleep or you're going to die! Do you understand me? Wake up!
