ALL MY CHILDREN

JANUARY 10, 2001

Tad: Just so we understand one another, my wife isn't going to find out about the two of us, not from me and not from you. Dixie is never going to know.
Leslie: You need to relax, Tad. I'm not into home-wrecking, just so you know.
Tad: Oh, really? What with all the stunts you've pulled, you know, with my father and my children, my wife --
Leslie: Look, lay off. I'm leaving for Singapore, ok? I did what I thought you wanted. I would do anything for you.
Tad: All you have to do is leave me alone.
Leslie: Look, you know what? I -- I can't handle this, ok? Let's just say good-bye and leave it at that. Ok, this is too painful.
I am too vulnerable. Tad: Yeah, you're too full of it.
Leslie: Since -- since when did you get to be so hurtful?
Tad: Never mind, never mind. I'm sorry. Forgive me, ok? Just stay away from Dixie.
Leslie: What, no bon voyage?

David: Dixie, what --
Dixie: It's true.
David: Wait -- all right --
Dixie: It's true.
David: Ok, slow down. What just happened?
Dixie: I saw them.
David: You saw who?
Dixie: Tad and uh --
David: Are you sure?
Dixie: Yes, he -- she was saying how I'm not going to find out about them from her, and he was saying the same thing.
David: Dixie, I'm so sorry. But maybe there's an explanation.
Dixie: Yes -- there is. My husband is having an affair with Leslie Coulson.

Greenlee: Leo, what are you doing?
Leo: I'm talking to you, Roger.
Greenlee: Leo --
Leo: Where the hell are your manners?
Roger: Who are you to lecture me? Greenlee, handle this.
Leo: Stop giving orders! How can you treat your own kid like this, telling her she's worthless?
Roger: Greenlee is not a kid, and you are interfering in my family.
Leo: Some family. What was her favorite doll?
Roger: Excuse me?
Greenlee: Leo, please --
Leo: No, you just said she's not a kid. Let's talk about when she was. Like -- I don't know -- when she wanted a puppy.
Roger: What kind of sentimental garbage --
Leo: You never even looked at her when she was a kid, let alone pay any attention to what she wanted for Christmas. Am I right?
Roger: You are out of your league, young man. Greenlee, get your things. I've had enough.
Leo: Me, too. Tearing apart your daughter in her own home -- what a big man. You know, I happen to know a little bit about lousy parenting myself. I'm a product of it. But you're crazy if you think you're going to walk out of here with your little ultimatum flapping in the --
Greenlee: Leo, back off. You're not helping.
Leo: This is worse than you even said, Greenlee.
Roger: All right. I've had enough. Greenlee, no wonder you're in trouble. Look at the company you keep. Will I have to throw you out of here myself?
Leo: Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo. Ooh. Shut up, Roger. Nobody's going anywhere but you. I happen to know your daughter pretty well. And she's let me down a thousand ways from Sunday, but at least I know who she is and what matters to her. Do you?

Liza: I -- I guess we can't really rule out the fact that Arlene might still be alive.
Adam: Oh, Liza, no.
Liza: Adam, there -- we don't know. Stuart thinks it's true, and there are signs.
Adam: I was there. Arlene had no pulse -- none.
Liza: Maybe you were wrong. What if when you threw Arlene overboard she was still alive? Who are you calling?
Adam: I'm -- I'm going to send out some feelers, maybe -- maybe even fish around with the police.
Liza: Oh. Lovely choice of words.
Adam: Liza, there is no chance that Arlene is alive. There's none. This -- someone is trying to -- to frighten us. That's what blackmailers do, you know. They get you rattled, and they move in for the kill. Well, no one plays me.
Liza: Who would be blackmailing you?
Adam: I don't know. But if anyone saw me throw Arlene's body off the yacht that night, maybe they've decided to make it pay. Well, they will regret it.
Liza: No -- no, no. Don't.

Hayley: Mateo --
Mateo: No, it's not your mom's flask.
Hayley: Uh-uh --
Mateo: So just let it go, please.
Hayley: But how can you say that? Look around. Who else could've done this?
Mateo: I don't --
Hayley: It was her!
Mateo: I don't know, but I'm not going to believe that it's your mom.
Hayley: Why?
Mateo: I'm just not. Because she's dead. Now, I hate the fact that she's dead. I hate that you can't let go of this -- this guilt that you feel. But it's the truth. Now, whoever did this, it wasn't Arlene. Thieves -- they wait for people to have weddings, funerals. They must've heard that --
Hayley: No. Stop it.
Mateo: Adam was marrying Liza today.
Hayley: No, this is not the work of a thief, Mateo. This is the work of a woman who's come back to get revenge on the daughter who tried to kill her.
Mateo: Hayley -- Hayley, please --
Hayley: She's come back to get revenge on me, Mateo.
Mateo: Do you hear yourself?
Hayley: Perfectly! She's come back to kill me, and she wants me to know it. She wants me afraid when she comes back for me, Mateo.

David: Dixie, listen to me. I know you're upset. You just saw your husband speaking with the woman that you were worried he might be having an affair with --
Dixie: No, you don't understand. You don't understand. I heard them, ok? He was standing there. They were talking, and they were -- about me not finding out about them!
David: All I'm saying is that it's possible you misunderstood. They work together, don't they?
Dixie: No, they don't work together anymore!
David: Then they used to, ok? Maybe this is just fallout from that. For crying out loud, Dixie, I don't know. I just think you should speak with Tad before you jump to any conclusions.
Dixie: He's standing there talking about how I am not going to find out about them from him or from her! Do you think that sounds like a man who's going to be honest, actually, when asked? I don't believe that this is happening! What do I do?
David: I don't know. And to be honest with you, I don't want to know.
Dixie: What?
David: I can't help you with this, Dixie.
Dixie: I -- I need help.
David: Not from me.
Dixie: What are you saying? You're the one -- you're the one that's been pushing me to find out about Tad. And now that I find out he's cheating on me, you don't want to be involved?
David: Dixie, it's been a mistake, me being involved in your marriage problems. You know what I want. You know exactly how I feel about you. If you could look at me and love me the way that I -- I would do anything for you then, Dixie. But you don't, so I can't. I can't sit here and hold your hand while your marriage falls apart.
Dixie: God, I don't believe this!
David: I'm sorry. I just can't do it, Dixie, and I won't.

Roger: This is getting us nowhere. Greenlee, I'm going to telephone your grandfather and let him know what we've decided, and you can meet me at the airport as we discussed. And you can make yourself scarce.
Leo: Don't treat me like I'm your servant, you elitist pig!
Roger: Take your hands --
Leo: My name is Leo du Pres!
Greenlee: Leo, are you trying to ruin my life?
Leo: Please, Greenlee. Well, that name doesn't ring a bell? Ok, well, maybe my stepfather's will -- Palmer Cortlandt?
Roger: You're Palmer Cortlandt's stepson?
Leo: Ah. Now, that label means something, doesn't it? It means that I'm connected to money and power, which in your little universe means everything, isn't that right, Roger?
Roger: Well, if you're Palmer Cortlandt's stepson, he must've disowned you.
Leo: No, no, no -- that your department -- the absentee parent.
Greenlee: Leo, I'm begging you --
Leo: Don't beg me. Beg this pathetic excuse for a father to open up his eyes and look at you! Look at her. She is starving for love. She is desperate for attention. Believe me, she is desperate for attention. She would twist herself into a pretzel for you, but you won't see -- look at her! She doesn't usually dress like this, Mr. Smythe. She did it so that you would accept her, to be what you wanted her to be. What Greenlee doesn't realize is that you'll never see how lucky you are to have a daughter who loves you as much as she does.
Roger: Are you cleansed, young man?
Leo: Depends.
Roger: Just stay out of my family's business. We have to talk, Greenlee.
Leo: Well, family's one thing. Business is another. Unless, of course, the only way to keep your business is to pretend that you have to look after your family.
Roger: What on earth are you talking about?
Leo: No, you come to see Greenlee every -- what, Greenlee -- every two years or so to make sure the old gravy train's still chugging along. Isn't that right? How long have you been dipping into the trust fund that your wife's parents set aside for their granddaughter? I asked you a question. I am so right, aren't I? Unbelievable.
Greenlee: Daddy? Have you been taking money from my trust fund?

Liza: Now, just -- just be patient and listen to me just for a couple of minutes. All right. If someone saw you throw Arlene's body overboard, if somebody saw Hayley strangling her mother, don't you think that calling the police is going to be playing right into their hands?
Adam: I didn't say I was going to call the police. I said I was going to fish around -- I've got to do something! Good grief, this is supposed to be our wedding day, and here we are floundering around after a -- a dead woman, a ghost who just won't die.

[Telephone rings]

Adam: Chandler.
Mateo: It's Mateo. Listen, someone broke into the condo -- Hayley, Hayley --
Hayley: It was her, Dad. Arlene was here.
Mateo: Hayley --
Adam, just get down here, ok?
Adam: I'll be there as soon as I can. I have to go to Hayley's. I'll explain later.
Liza: What's going on?
Adam: What? Get --

Tad: What the hell was that about?
Liza: Having a bad day.
Tad: Yeah.
Liza: Although, if you showed up here, yours must be worse.
Tad: You have no idea. Listen, did Dixie stop by here to pick up Junior?
Liza: No. No, Stuart took Junior home after we canceled the wedding. Don't -- don't start criticizing, please --
Tad: No, no, I wasn't about to. Listen, I want you to do me a favor. Help me find my wife before I lose her for good.

Roger: Trust fund? You -- you have no idea what you're saying.
Leo: Oh, I think she does.
Greenlee: Were you dipping? Have you been taking my money, Daddy?
Roger: We'll talk about this later. I won't force you to go to Geneva with me. You should work out your issues with your grandparents, however. I -- I have to make my flight to meet your mother in Spain. I'll send -- send her your regards.

Leo: Hmm! A non-denial denial -- did you hear that? I so busted him. Did you see that, Greenlee? You know, I thought that I would catch him at his own game. I really did. Oh, man, can I catch people in a scam or what? Ooh!
Leo: Greenlee?
Greenlee: Why would my father need to steal from me? Gramps gives them money, too.
Leo: Too much money is not enough for some people, Greenlee. I'm sorry. I know this isn't easy, but at least you know the real truth about your family now. You don't have to wonder anymore if it's about you. It's about them. It is all about them. Greenlee -- why are you looking at me like that? Say something, would you?

Liza: What's going on? Did Dixie find out about what's going on with you and Leslie?
Tad: I don't know. That's the problem. I can't find Dixie, which doesn't make any sense. None of this makes any sense. About two hours ago we were having a wonderful afternoon together, you know, celebrating, because I thought the whole Leslie mess was behind us. Especially since she agreed to take that job you set up for her. And then, you know, boom, now this.
Liza: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait -- explain what "this" is.
Tad: I got out of the shower. I come into the bedroom. Dixie's not there. I call around for her. There's no answer. I have no idea where she could be, and then all of a sudden the phone rings.
Liza: Leslie?
Tad: Bingo. From a room at the Valley Inn. She tells me that Dixie is there yelling at somebody outside her door.
Liza: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Back up. Since when does Leslie have a room at the Valley Inn?
Tad: Who cares? Since today, apparently.
Liza: Well, was Dixie outside banging on the door?
Tad: I don't know. I can't trust anything Leslie says. The only thing I know right now is I got to find my wife.
Liza: Well, yeah, when you do, remember one thing --
tad: What's that?
Liza: You have to tell her the truth.

Dixie: Huh. Oh -- you're right. I never should've come back here. I'm -- I'm -- I'm sorry. I'm sorry to bother you.
David: Dixie, wait. Just -- just consider this for a second. I live here full-time. You know, if tad and Leslie were having an affair right down the hall from me, don't you think that I would've bumped into them once or twice? I have never seen either of them here. And certainly not together.
Dixie: David, I'm his wife. I -- I didn't see it till I saw it.
David: You want to know the truth, right, whatever it is?
Dixie: Yeah.
David: Well, these things, when they happen to other people, they -- they're usually exposed because of a mistake. Now, if Tad and Leslie are having an affair, Dixie, there is an easy way to find out. Right here.

[Telephone rings]

Dixie: Hello. Leslie Coulson's room, please.
Woman: Who?
Dixie: Leslie Coulson, room 909.
Woman: Room 909 is Mr. Martin's room.
Dixie: What?
Woman: 909 Is registered to Tad Martin. I don't know any Leslie.

David: What?
Dixie: Uh -- the desk clerk said --
David: Dixie, what?
Dixie: The room -- the room -- the room -- the room is regis-- it's registered to Tad.
David: Dixie, where are you going? Dixie!

Leslie: Oh, my. For me?
Clerk: It's the perfume that was ordered for you, Ms. Coulson.
Leslie: Oh, what a sweet, sweet gesture. He is so thoughtful. Come in so I can get you something for your trouble, please.

Dixie: That's it.
David: Dixie, no!
Dixie: Oh!

Leslie: This is for all your help with my situation with Mr. Martin.
Man: I have to confess something, Ms. Coulson. I just heard the new desk clerk telling someone on the phone that this room was registered to Tad Martin. I know we had an agreement, but this clerk got her hands on a log or something and -- well, I just hope this doesn't cause a problem for you and Mr. Martin.
Leslie: Has anyone seen Dixie Martin in the hotel today?
Man: That's just it. I have. And I'm really worried that she was the one that made the call.
Leslie: Don't worry, ok? And thank you again.

Dixie: Why are you doing this to me? I have a right to go over there and confront her!
David: And what, scratch her eyes out?
Dixie: No! God --
David: Dixie, wait a minute.
Dixie: Stop it. Stop it! Aren't I humiliated enough?
David: I already said that I couldn't help you, Dixie, and I meant it. But I'm not going to let you go to Leslie's room and be hurt in that way! You're not going to gain any satisfaction from that meeting, I promise you. She's only going to deny everything that you confront her with, and then --
Dixie: You knew about them, didn't you?
David: What?
Dixie: You knew about Tad and Leslie. You've known for months, haven't you?
David: I don't know anything more --
Dixie: Oh, you're such a liar!
David: Dixie, don't project your anger at Tad onto me.
Dixie: You know, I might be a little too trusting for my own good, but how long did you think you could keep this from me?
David: I wasn't keeping anything from you.
Dixie: You know, all this time you've been, like, trying to convince me to give in to my feelings for you, to make love to you, and you knew my marriage to Tad was falling apart, didn't you?
Tad: Trust me, I got enough on my plate without you trying to stake out the high moral ground. Like I said, the only thing I have to do is find Dixie and figure out whether or not she was at the valley inn and, if she wasn't, then what the hell Leslie's trying to pull this time.

Liza: Fine. If you don't tell Dixie the truth, then you're going to be trying to figure out what Leslie's trying to pull for the rest of your life. Is that the way you want to live your life? You made a mistake.
Tad: Not one Dixie could get past twice.
Liza: You were drugged. You were under the influence of this Libidozone. You didn't even know that you took the drug.
Tad: That's not going to matter to her. The only that is is that I slept with somebody else after I swore to her I would never be unfaithful again.
Liza: All right. Why don't you calm down? Come in here just for a couple minutes. Dixie is going to be upset that you kept secrets from her. But when she finds out the truth, she's going to realize that you didn't do any of this willingly. If it hadn't been for the drug, you probably never would've done what you did.
Tad: "Probably"?
Liza: Definitely?
Tad: Oh, that's peachy. That -- that sounds really beautiful. Hell, I believe I'm innocent now. She worked with David Hayward. She knows all about Libidozone. It -- it frees up your inhibitions, allowing you to do what you really want to do.
Liza: Don't you at least owe your wife the chance to forgive you?
Tad: She won't forgive me.
Liza: You don't know that.
Tad: I do! Why are you trying to cram bad advice down my throat?
Liza: Because I don't want to see you go through -- when Dixie found out about our affair all those years ago -- I don't want to see you go through that. Don't make her find out the wrong way. Tell her the truth. Stop lying. You have to.

Adam: Hayley. Oh, my God. Well, Hayley, you're right. It does look like Arlene was here.
Mateo: Adam, please --
Adam: There's got to be another explanation. There is no way that Arlene can be alive. I know this. I held her body in my arms. I may be the only person who knows for sure.
Hayley: Well, then, who? Who else could've done this?
Adam: I don't know. I don't know. But I -- we're going to find out.
Hayley: Dad, look at me. It is her flask. I've seen it before. Smells like vodka. Vodka. It was what she always puts in her coffee or her juice.
Mateo: Could be anybody's flask.
Hayley: What, are you kidding me? You think somebody broke in here with a flask and tore our apartment apart and then left the flask? As a what, a calling card? Look, neither one of you are going to convince me that this act was random. This is Arlene clearly sending me a message. Nobody else hates us that much. Nobody else could. Because I didn't try to kill anybody else.
Adam: You did kill her.
Hayley: Oh, God --
Mateo: You know what, Adam? You're not really helping now, you know?
Adam: All right, sorry. All right, let me be the devil's advocate here. Let's say Arlene is back. We all know that she wouldn't leave her things behind for very long, would she?
Hayley: We do.
Mateo: So we go to the Pine Cone and we wait for her -- or whoever's trying to make us think that she's returned.
Hayley: Fantastic. I'm going, too.
Mateo: No.
Adam: No, Sweetheart. No, no, it's too risky. We could be walking into a trap.
Hayley: So I'll call for help.
Mateo: No. And I'm not really crazy about you staying here considering what just happened. So --
Adam: Let me and Mateo go to the motel. You go to my house. Stay with Colby and Liza. Don't make any stops along the way.
Hayley: Well, then, call me as soon as you know something.
Mateo: Absolutely. Come on. I'll walk you to the car.
Hayley: Dad -- if you find her, tell her I'm sorry.

Leo: I tell you the way I see this, Greenlee. And being the spawn of Cruella de Vil myself, I know that it isn't easy to find out that your family isn't normal, especially your parents. But here's the thing -- having that information is better than not having it, you know what I mean? Knowledge is power and all that. I mean, if -- if you know all their secrets, they can't hold anything over you, you know? They can't take advantage of you. So, in a way, you can turn this little visit from your father into your own -- I don't know -- your own personal declaration of independence.
Leo: You know what I'm saying, right?
Greenlee: Leo, do you really think I needed to know that my parents have been stealing from me? Do you think I honestly had to know that the only reason they even speak to me is to make sure that they can get their hands on my money?
Leo: Greenlee, you can go to your grandfather and tell him. He can keep an eye on your trust fund.
Greenlee: You idiot.
Leo: What?
Greenlee: You're an idiot, Leo, and you just don't get it. Why would I want to know for sure that my parents don't give a damn about me? I didn't want to know it, and I sure as hell didn't want you to know it.
Leo: You know, Greenlee, once again you totally misinterpret what I'm trying to do to help you.
Greenlee: You didn't do anything for me except ruin my life.
Leo: Don't be such a drama queen.
Greenlee: Damn it, Leo, I don't have anything except who I am and where I came from, and you've managed to take both of those things away from me tonight.
Leo: Greenlee, I caught your father in the act of stealing from you. He was stealing from you.
Greenlee: He's my father.
Leo: Exactly.
Greenlee: Who the hell are you to decide how I exist in my own family? I've spent my entire life trying to hold onto the little scraps of attention that they've given me, and now you've humiliated my father, you've made me feel as big as a gnat for being stupid, and now you're telling me -- giving me this lecture about this favor that you're doing me? Are you really that clueless?
Leo: You know, this is why we never would've made it. I stand up and defend you to the one person who never appreciated you or loved you for who you are!
Greenlee: Are you listening to me? I didn't ask for you to defend me. You left me, remember?
Leo: Greenlee, don't mix us up with your father. It is not the same thing.
Greenlee: It is exactly the same, Leo. You left me, my father uses me for my money, my mother barely speaks to me, and my grandparents are this close to disowning me. I was trying to hold onto the one thread that I had left, and you ripped that away from me! And for the life of me I don't know why because you're still going to walk out that door and leave me behind, aren't you?
Leo: Greenlee, wait --
Greenlee: No, you get out of here.
Leo: Take it easy, would you?
Greenlee: No, just get your junk and get the hell out of here now!

Liza: What bothered Dixie the most were the lies, the betrayal.
Tad: Oh, Liza, listen. If what happened between you and me hadn't have hurt Dixie so badly, then maybe I could do it, you know. Maybe I could tell her the truth. But -- I -- I just cannot float this. Not with my history.
Liza: Keeping it inside of you is going to kill you. It's most certainly going to ruin your marriage.
Tad: No. Losing Dixie would kill me.
Liza: Do you know how hard it was for her to tell you that she kissed David Hayward? But she did it because she always wanted your relationship to be based in honesty. Don't you owe her at least that much?

[Door opens and closes]

Hayley: Sorry.
Liza: Hi. Did you see your father?
Hayley: Oh, yeah. Mm-hmm. He and Mateo had to go -- check something out. Hi, Tad.
Tad: Hey, Hayley.
Liza: Are you all right?
Hayley: Yeah. I just -- I needed to be around people.
Liza: Yeah.
Hayley: Is there -- is there anybody upstairs? I just -- I would like to lie down for a little bit.
Liza: Sure. Is there something I can do?
Hayley: Oh, no. No. But thanks.

Liza: So, what are you going to do?

David: I swear, Dixie, admitting that I love you has nothing to do with Tad or any possible affair.
Dixie: I can't do this right now. I'm sorry.
David: You're going to listen to me. I met you, and you showed me a different way of living, a way based on kindness, a selflessness that was totally new to me. It was almost beyond my comprehension. And I couldn't get you out of my mind, Dixie. I still can't. You love so fully, so completely, so effortlessly. And I found myself wanting to earn -- to deserve your love.
David: But you have to choose, Dixie. And if you're going to choose Tad, I'm out. I have to be.

Greenlee: Who needs the truth? That's what I think of the truth!
Leo: So what if I know the truth about your family, Greenlee? My mother let me sit in a jail cell for a murder charge! What --
Greenlee: My father uses me as his own personal ATM and tells me I'm worthless! So now you know! Now you know everything there is to know about me! Are you happy? I hate you, you lousy son of a --
Leo: Fine, fine! I got it! You don't want my help! Fine!
Greenlee: I didn't ask you to chase my father out of my life. You chose to walk away from your mother! You took my parents away from me without even asking me if that's what I wanted!
Leo: They're already gone, Greenlee!
Greenlee: I still had hope! Did you have to take that away from me, too?
Leo: Fine. I get it. I get it. You don't want my he. As usual, you're looking for somebody to blame, and you want to blame me. Fine! Your call, Greenlee. Don't throw another thing at me, either.

[Greenlee hollers]

Adam: Where the hell are all of Arlene's things?
Man: What do you mean?
Adam: There were personal items left by a woman here.
Mateo: We were told she left some clothes behind?
Man: Yeah, her stuff was here.
Adam: Where are they?
Man: Gone, I guess. I tried to tell you.
Adam: All you told me was that my brother was paying the bill, and you told me how amazing it is that we look just alike.
Man: And I tried to tell you I saw a woman putting a bunch of stuff in the trunk of a car earlier today, stuff from here.
Mateo: You -- you did not tell us that before.
Man: I tried.
Mateo: Who was she?
Man: I have no idea.
Adam: What did she --
Man: But I guessed it was this Arlene you keep talking about.
Adam: What did she look like? Describe her.
Man: I saw her through the office window. I didn't get a close look, really.
Adam: You saw a woman emptying the contents of this room into the trunk of a car. You did see that much?
Man: Yeah. I see that every day when people check out.
Adam: All right. What did she look like? Man: I have no idea. I saw her from behind, ok? She was a woman -- a blond, thin woman in tight clothes. She had great legs, all right? You happy now?

Liza: Listen to me. One mistake, one failure to be honest, one attempt can ruin your marriage. And the bottom line is that you love Dixie.
Tad: More than anything.
Liza: Then show her by telling her the truth. Trust the love that you feel for her. Right now it's all you've got. And, Tad, you know what? It's everything.
Tad: Well, I don't want to jump through hoops for the rest of my life. So I guess you're right. I'll tell her. Tonight. Tell her everything and pray she can forgive me.

Dixie: Oh.
Dixie: God.
Dixie: This is mine. This is my perfume.
Dixie: See this.
Dixie: God --
Dixie: "Together forever. Love, Dixie."
Oh, my God. Tad.

ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Brooke: You fired your daughter because she's gay?

Laura: So you guys want to sneak a peek at the future?

Tad: Hayward's not the one screwing up my marriage. I am.

Leslie: Tad, you keep this up, and you are going to wear me out.
