Liza: Oh! Adam. What are you doing sitting in the dark?
Adam: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm -- I was just thinking.
Liza: I don't know why you're down here. You know I can't sleep very well when you're not there.
Adam: This was supposed to be our wedding night. We should be upstairs wrapped in each other's arms, making love till dawn.
Liza: We're here, and we're together.
Adam: Not like this. Not under siege from Arlene's twisted mind.
Liza: You know, I thought maybe we were dealing with Arlene's ghost or something, but her alive, vicious and -- that terrifies me.

[Liza and Adam gasp]

Liza: Oh, Mateo. Sorry.
Mateo: You know, I don't know many ghosts that can trash someone's condo like that or move out of a hotel and take all her stuff with her.
Liza: You couldn't sleep?
Mateo: No, I tried. I'm going to make myself a drink.
Liza: You know, Adam told me what happened.
Mateo: Thanks for letting us stay here. You know, I couldn't stay in that place with all the vandalism. It was just -- it was bad. Appreciate it. Thank you.
Liza: It was that bad, huh?
Mateo: Listen, if this is Arlene, she's gone over the edge.
Liza: She's taking us with her.
Adam: It's not Arlene.
Liza: Stuart thinks that he saw her at the gallery. Somebody smashed our wedding cake, Adam.
Mateo: Yeah. How about the flask at the condo?
Adam: It's all circumstantial. She had no pulse. I held her lifeless body in my arms. I threw her into freezing water. Nobody could survive that.
Liza: You know what? That sounds really reassuring.
Mateo: Well, if it's not Arlene, then we've got some sicko on our hands.
Liza: Yeah, but who could be that sick?
Mateo: What's next?
Adam: Nothing is next. No one is going to terrorize my family.
Liza: Adam, they know -- they know our family. They know personal things about us. That makes me really afraid.

Leslie: Tad, I know you're upset, but was it real necessary to drag me through the hotel lobby?
Tad: You're lucky it wasn't by the throat. Dixie! Honey, you here?
Leslie: We have something to tell you.
Tad: Shut up.
Leslie: Well, isn't that why I'm here, to tell your wife about us?
Tad: No. You're here to tell her the truth -- that our big affair was nothing but a figment of your perverted imagination. And you're going to do it, Leslie, if I have to squeeze every last word out of your mouth.
Leslie: My mouth is all yours.
Tad: Dixie? Dixie!
Leslie: Shh. Aren't you afraid you're going to wake the boys? Playing rough with a woman -- what kind of example is that on your impressionable sons?
Tad: My children aren't here, thank God.
Leslie: So we're all alone.
Tad: Do yourself a favor -- don't play with me. Dixie? Where the hell is she?
Leslie: So the little woman's playing hard to get.
Tad: Knock it off. Do you understand?
Leslie: Whatever you say. I wonder where Dixie could be. It is way past her bedtime. Or maybe not.
Dixie: Wha-- what?

[David and Dixie kiss passionately]

David: No. We can't.

Tad: Put it down.
Leslie: No luck?
Tad: No. She wasn't upstairs.
Leslie: Oh. Well, maybe the PTA meeting ran late, or maybe she's with --
Tad: Stop it. Just shut up. She was upset when I left, which means she's probably at a friend's house.
Leslie: You know, it's really late. Are you sure that you want your friends to know that your adoring wife has abandoned you?
Tad: She didn't abandon me.
Leslie: You know, denial is so counterproductive.
Tad: She walked out on me. Ergo she's coming back. Understand? So we're just going to wait for her.
Leslie: You know, I have an idea about what we can do. I know, you're not in the mood. Reminds me of the first night we were together.
Tad: The only night we were together.
Leslie: You were upset about Dixie, I comforted you. Then one thing led to another, and it was pure passion. I have never known anything like it, and neither have you.
Tad: What are you whining about?
Leslie: Don't you see? It's happening all over again. Here we are, we're alone, ready for love, and Dixie's off with --
Tad: No, go ahead, say his name. I dare you. You know something I don't?
Leslie: Isn't it obvious? She's with David.
Tad: Only in his dreams.
Leslie: Didn't you bring me here to tell the truth? That's all I'm doing. Your wife is seeking comfort from the new man in her life. And you would make it so much easier if you would just face the facts.
Tad: You mean the fact like you're a maniac?
Leslie: I'm trying to help you, Tad. If you don't believe me, call David.
Tad: No.
Leslie: Come on.
Tad: No. Last thing I'm going to do right now is play one of your sick little games.
Leslie: What are you afraid of? That I might be right? Come on. What do you have to lose? Except your marriage.

Dixie: Um -- I thought that you wanted to. Don't you want me?
David: This has nothing to do with how much I want you, Dixie.
Dixie: Well, then why?
David: Not like this. I look in your eyes, I see hurt. Your mouth is trembling, but it's sadness. What you're feeling right now more than anything else is anger.
Dixie: But I want you.
David: No. You want escape, to get back at Tad, to forget. You have been running from me for so long now, Dixie. And now you're finally here, but you're running from something else. I want you to want me, Dixie, and nobody else. When I look in your eyes, I want to see your longing for me, not conflict. And I want our first time to be about our love, our passion, nothing else.
Dixie: You think I'm using you. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come here. I really -- this was a mistake. This is not me.
David: Dixie -- Dixie, wait.
Dixie: No, no, let me go. I'm sorry. I've embarrassed myself enough. Just let me go. I shouldn't have let myself go like that.
David: No, no. There is nothing I want more than you losing yourself, giving yourself over to me, to the passions that you've denied, Dixie.

[Telephone rings]

Dixie: Oh. That could be the hospital.
David: No. They would have paged me.

[Ring]

Dixie: Somebody's got to be calling you this late.
Dad: Nobody's looking for me, Dixie.
Dixie: Could be Tad.

[Ring]

Dixie: Don't.

Adam: Blaming Arlene for what's happening is not helping us.
Mateo: Well, believe me, I don't want it to be Arlene. I want her out of my life permanently.
Adam: There's a perfectly logical explanation. Somebody saw me or Hayley with Arlene on the boat that night. All we have to do is find that person and put a stop to this.
Liza: There were hundreds of people on the boat that night. It could have been anyone.
Mateo: It's got to be someone who knows us pretty well and they're getting a kick out of this.
Liza: To me, it all comes back to Arlene.
Mateo: You know, the manager at the hotel swears he saw her.
Adam: He saw a slender blonde from the back.
Liza: Adam has already blamed my mother.
Adam: All right, I was out of line. What I meant was it could be anybody.
Liza: Oh, yeah, it could've been me. I ran short of spandex and decided to clear out Arlene's room.
Mateo: Whomever it is, we've got to stop them because Hayley was just starting to get a grip on Arlene's death. And now this thing could send her into a spin.
Adam: Hayley's welfare is my primary concern.

Mateo: Did we wake you?
Hayley: Are you kidding? The silence is deafening. What did I interrupt?
Adam: Nothing.
Liza: Did you want a glass of milk, a snack?
Hayley: How about a piece of wedding cake? Sorry, it's a bad joke.
Mateo: I'll get that milk for you.
Hayley: Thanks. You guys were talking about me, weren't you?
Liza: We're just concerned for you. We're so sorry about your condo.
Hayley: Me, too. It's a mess and really creepy. So, what's keeping you awake?
Liza: Same reason.
Adam: It's the hour. Tomorrow in the light of day, we'll find out who broke into your house and we'll put an end to it.

[Colby cries]

Liza: I'll be right back.
Adam: Give her a kiss for me.

Hayley: You know, this morning was supposed to be your wedding day, and now you're having a sleepover.
Adam: The most important thing to me is your safety, Hayley.
Hayley: Dad, what if it is Arlene?
Adam: It isn't Arlene. That's not possible. But whoever it is, they could be dangerous. So that's why I want you and Mateo to stay here with us until we find out who's behind this.
Hayley: You don't have to protect me.
Adam: I will keep you safe till my last breath.
Mateo: We'll stay.
Adam: Good. It's settled.
Hayley: I always feel safe here. Thank you.

[Liza screams]

Liza: Adam!
Adam: Liza?

[Colby cries]

Adam: Liza, what's wrong?
Liza: There -- there in the crib.
Adam: What's wrong?
Liza: It's ok.
Mateo: A gift?
Adam: Winifred, do you know anything about this?
Winifred: No, Sir. No, no.
Liza: I just came in here to pick up Colby, ok? And I picked her up, and this was in the crib. Somebody has been in the house! Who would do this?
Adam: All right, all right. Colby's all right. We won't let anything happen to her.
Liza: Won't let anything happen to her? Something already has. Somebody has been here. Somebody has been near her, touching her.
Hayley: Does it have an address on it?
Mateo: No, it's just heavy.
Hayley: Is it ticking? No, don't shake it.
Adam: Be careful.
Mateo: It's an ashtray.
The Commodore Hotel, Chicago.
Liza: What? What?
Hayley: It's Arlene. She's back.

Leslie: No answer?
Tad: No. But that doesn't mean anything. Probably just at the hospital.
Leslie: Or playing doctor with his favorite patient. Drink? You know, there's nothing like a nightcap in the wee hours. We'll be doing a lot of this in the future. Here, it'll do you good.
Tad: No, thank you. All I want is my wife.
Leslie: All your wife wants is somebody else.
Tad: Leave it be. Stay put.
Leslie: No sign of your wife yet?
Tad: She'll be here.
Leslie: This must be Jamie's. Oh, I love him already. He is so much like you.
Tad: Don't mention my son. And stop fondling everything.
Leslie: You know, nothing in here reflects your personality, Tad. You're a risk taker, not Ward Cleaver.
Tad: Wrong. You take a good look around. This is my life. And I love every part of it, even that stupid golf ball. This is me. It's all I want. It's all I have, and I'll be damned if I let you walk away with it.
Leslie: But I am your future.
Tad: No, you're not. You're just a psychotic pain in the neck who's going to tell Dixie the truth, and then you're going to get the hell out of my life because I'm getting my family back.
Leslie: Tad, Dixie has moved on. It's time for you to do the same.
Tad: Don't say her name again. Not to me. You don't talk about my wife, not in my home. You don't have the right. You don't have the right to breathe the same air that my wife does. And if she leaves me for any reason, it's not going to be because of your lies.

Dixie: Thanks for not answering the phone.
David: You're welcome.
Dixie: I just can't talk to Tad right now, you know? If it was Tad. It could have been anybody.
David: Well, if it's important, I'm sure they'll call.
Dixie: It's awfully late. I should go.
David: Dixie, wait. Where are you going to go?
Dixie: I don't know. I don't want to go home to an empty house, and it'll be worse if Tad hasn't done what I asked.
David: You mean if he's still there.
Dixie: Yeah. I just don't want to fight anymore. I'll stay with a friend.
David: You know, wait a minute. Hold on. Come here. I'm going to call you a taxi. I don't want you driving like this. You're too upset.
Dixie: You don't have to take care of me.
David: There's nothing I'd rather do.
David: Yes, I want to get a taxi. Yeah, probably in about five minutes, I would think. Yeah, we'll meet downstairs. Just bill it to my room. Never mind. Dixie. Hey, hey. Come here, come here. It's ok. It's all right. It's all right. It's ok.
David: It's all right.
Dixie: This is so pathetic.
David: No, it's not. It's not. Dixie, it's all right. You're allowed.
Dixie: Oh. You're so kind.
David: Well, don't tell anybody, ok? Here. Here, come here. All right. That's so much better.
Dixie: Oh, it doesn't feel like anything's going to be better.
David: It will, Dixie. Someday.
Dixie: Just doesn't feel like it. The marriage that I built is gone. And what is this going to do to the kids, you know? To Junior? He loves Tad so much.
David: Junior is going to be fine. He has you.
Dixie: Just doesn't feel like it. You know, maybe this wouldn't have happened -- maybe he wouldn't have turned if, you know, you and I hadn't --
David: Dixie, you honored your vows.
Dixie: What do you mean, by following the letter of the law? That's not what makes a marriage. I just don't know what I'm going to do.
David: All right. Come here. Give me your coat. Come on. Come over here. Have a seat. You know, when I was a kid and Vanessa would give me some kind of hell, I would go to my room, I'd close my eyes, and I would think about the future.
Dixie: And what would you dream? That you'd be king of the world?
David: Well, actually, I would dream that I'd be a world-renowned cardiologist with a knack for alienating everyone around me.
Dixie: Oh, this is good. Stop it.
David: Why don't you try it.
Dixie: I can't. I personally just don't see any future at all.
David: All right, ok. Look, let me try it for you, ok? Close your eyes. I see you more content and more fulfilled than you've ever been in your entire life. And you're so proud of Junior. He's a soccer star and a rock singer. And you live in a beautiful, warm, sunny house, sitting perfectly on top of a hill.
Dixie: Why a hill?
David: So we can go sledding every winter.
Dixie: "We"?
David: I can't picture my life without you, Dixie. And I'll do everything I can to take away your pain.

Leslie: My lies? You've lied to your wife for weeks.
Tad: And you probably loved every sick little minute of it, didn't you?
Leslie: Don't make me the bad guy. You wanted me as much as I wanted you that night, and you still do. You just don't want to admit it because you're afraid it's going to rock your safe, boring world. Well, take a chance, Tad. There's more to life than dinner at 6:00 And falling asleep on the couch.
Tad: And if you're lucky, you might be able to grab some of it. After you tell my wife the truth.
Leslie: Oh, God. You know, that word is so overused. You know, the truth isn't going to help you now. It doesn't matter if we made love once or a hundred times. You did it and you lied about it. Dixie won't take you back.
Tad: Yes, she will.
Leslie: Tad --
Tad: You stay the hell away from me. You make me sick.
Leslie: All I've ever done is love you.
Tad: No. Sex on drugs isn't love. Harassment isn't love. That's what makes you so dangerous, Leslie. You're desperate for something you don't even understand. You're like a disease. And I, for one, am going to do anything I have to do to get rid of you.
Leslie: Is that why you tried to railroad me to Singapore?
Tad: What are you talking about?
Leslie: Oh, don't pretend. I heard you. The dream job in Singapore? That was just a way to get rid of me.

Tad: How did you know that? Leslie: You have any idea how much that hurt me? After all I've put into making this relationship work, you throw me away? As if a new time zone could change my feelings --
Tad: How did you know about the job?
Leslie: You were bragging to Dixie! You were so full of yourself. You were so smug.
Tad: That was in our bedroom. Oh, my God. You were hiding in our house?
Leslie: Well, I didn't think anyone would come home.
Tad: That is so pathetic. What the hell were you doing in my house?
Leslie: Research.
Tad: Did you get what you we after? Did it turn you on a little bit? Listening to me make love to my wife? Did it?
Leslie: Don't be disgusting. I left when you were in the shower.
Tad: Yeah, that's right. Dixie thought she heard something. And that's -- that's how you got my wedding ring, isn't it? You just walked right up to my bedside table and took it, just like you stole everything else in that sick little love nest of yours. How'd you get a hotel room in my name, huh? No, wait a minute. Wait just a second. I mean, if you're willing to grab my wedding ring off my bedside table with me in the bathroom, then -- yeah, well, a credit card. That's just child's play, isn't it? Give it back.
Leslie: We're lovers. You paid for my perfume, the necklace I wore to the Crystal Ball, our room.
Tad: You know what? Maybe it's time for me to involve the police. Perfect timing.
Leslie: All right. Fine. Here. You know what? I'm tired. I'm leaving.
Tad: You're not going anywhere.
Leslie: I am not going to take any more of your abuse.
Tad: Oh, yes you are.
Leslie: What are you doing?
Tad: I'm going to call my good friend Derek Frye.
Leslie: That is not necessary. Tad: You don't think so? Breaking and entering? Burglary? Forgery? Stalking? You're going to jail, Peanut.
Leslie: Let me go.
Tad: Don't move.
Leslie: You know, it's your word against mine. All of the receipts are in your name.
Tad: I'll take my chances. Yeah, hi. Could I talk to Derek Frye, please? He's not? Oh, that doesn't matter. Could I just -- then put me on with the desk sergeant, please.
Leslie: What are you going to tell them? That you had an affair and you want your credit card back from your mistress? Well, I already gave it to you.
Tad: Yeah, hi. I'd like to report a robbery. Uh-huh. Yeah. Could you send a squad car to my house? That'd be great. That's 646 Holland Avenue. Yeah. Thank you.

Hayley: My God, it's true. She's come back.

[Colby cries]

Hayley: Arlene is back.
Liza: Winifred, please -- please take Colby.
Winifred: Yes. Oh! Oh, oh. Come on.

Liza: Ok, will somebody please explain to me what this connection is between Arlene and this ashtray?
Adam: It's probably nothing. It's --
Hayley: How can you say that? How can you say -- this is proof. This is proof that she is back and she wants blood.
Adam: You're getting carried away, Hayley.
Liza: Will somebody please tell me what the connection is between Arlene and this thing that's probably stolen?
Hayley: Tell her.
Adam: The ashtray is from the hotel where I stayed with Arlene.
Hayley: It's where I was conceived, and nobody knows that except for Dad and me and Arlene. Now, you can't ignore this. She's back. She wants to get even.
Adam: No. No.
Liza: What else? Who else? Who else hates us so much? I stole you from Arlene. I gave you a child that she could never give you.
Hayley: And I killed her. And now she wants revenge.
Adam: I'm not buying into this revenge plot. No.
Liza: Adam, who else could get into the house? Arlene probably still has a key.
Adam: There has to be some explanation.
Hayley: Oh, yeah? How about this? "Confess."
Liza: I'm calling the police.
Adam: No.
Liza: Yes. Somebody's in our home. We have to call the authorities. This is dangerous. It's affecting our daughter.
Adam: We can handle this ourselves.
Liza: No, we can't. Arlene has come into our home. She could have done anything.
Adam: Well, Colby is fine. Liza: What about next time, Adam?
Adam: I'll hire some more security.
Liza: I am not taking chances with my daughter's life. Do you hear me?
Adam: Liza, listen to me. Listen to me. We can't call the authorities. What are we going to tell them? That the woman we thought we'd murdered is alive and really PO'd about it?
Liza: I'm not going to tell them that part.
Adam: Don't do it. The authorities are going to ask you questions that you won't want to answer, that you can't answer if you want us to be a family.
Hayley: I have the solution. I'm going to go to the police and confess.
Mateo: No.
Hayley: I'm going to leave all of you out of it. Don't worry. Look, you brought me here to protect me, and I've put us all in danger. If I go to the police, I fess up to what I did, that's it. It's over. Nobody else gets hurt.
Mateo: I won't let you do it.
Hayley: Mateo, that's not for you to say.
Mateo: Well, ok, fine. You go down, we all go down. We all confess, right, Adam?
Adam: Yes.
Hayley: No, no. I go alone. I started this when I attacked Arlene, and I'm the one that can end it.
Adam: Wait, Sweetheart. All Arlene wants is money. If she'd wanted you to bare your soul to the police, she would have sicced the cops on you and me a long time ago.
Hayley: Arlene likes to pull the wings t of her victims before she squashes them. She's just getting warmed up.
Adam: Sweetheart, if it is Arlene, she's just trying to scare us.
Liza: Well, she's doing a damn good job.
Adam: Sweetheart, the only thing we need is to stick together.
Liza: I'm calling the police.
Adam: No. No! Look, we're getting way ahead of ourselves here. We don't have one shred of proof that Arlene is even alive.
Liza: Oh, great. The only alternative is that there's some other maniac out there who's trying to do this to us. Call the police.
Adam: I don't want the authorities involved! I can take care of my own family!
Hayley: Liza is right. This time Arlene just left a smashed cake and an ashtray and a trashed condo. What -- what about next time? What if somebody gets hurt? I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing there was something that I could have done to stop her.
Mateo: All right. I'm going to end this thing.
Hayley: Where are you going?
Mateo: There's only one thing that Arlene craves more than money. That's booze. Maybe she's holed up in some old dive in town. I'll go find her, I'll flush her out.
Hayley: Well, fine, I'll go with you.
Mateo: You're not -- you're not going with me. You're staying here.
Adam: No, no, you're safest here, Hayley.
Mateo: I'll check the bars, I'll ask around and see if anybody's seen her, and with any luck, I'll drag her back by her hair.

Hayley: I love you.
Mateo: I love you, too.
Hayley: Please be careful.
Mateo: If she is alive, I'll find her. All right?

Dixie: I'm a wreck.
David: No, you're not. You're beautiful.
Dixie: Look, I've cried all over your shirt.
David: I'm sure it'll survive.
Dixie: This is very embarrassing to have to thank you again, but I should be going.
David: No, no. It's late. You're exhausted. I'll get you a room, ok? The best thing you can do for yourself right now is get a good night's sleep.
Dixie: Here?
David: Yeah, why not? If it'll make it any easier for you, just think of it as doctor's orders.


[David calls the front desk]

Yes, I'd like to book a room for the night. You're kidding. Well, there must be something. What about the presidential suite? No cancellations. Thanks.

Dixie: What happened?
David: Apparently, there's a convention in town for the next few days. Everything's booked.
Dixie: Oh. Well, I'll stay at another hotel.
David: No, the whole point was to make this easier. You'll stay here, ok?
Dixie: I can't.
David: Why not? It's all yours.
Dixie: And where are you going to sleep?
David: I'll just sleep on these two chairs.
Dixie: No.
David: I'm a doctor, Dixie. I could sleep standing on my feet.
Dixie: I'm sorry. I'm being ridiculous. I've already put you out. I have a home. I should go there.
David: And what are you going to do, Dixie? Watch Tad pack? Or walk into a house that's cold and dark, empty? You don't want to do that. Will you stay?
Dixie: Yes.

Leslie: How could you call the police?
Tad: Why shouldn't I? You stole from me, remember? My wedding ring, my credit card, my marriage.
Leslie: Tad, I have been so patient.
Tad: You have been a nut ball.
Leslie: I have waited so long, hoping that you would see reality.
Tad: You touch me again, I swear, I will add assault to the charges.

[Sirens]

Leslie: How can I prove how much I love you?
Tad: By confessing to both Dixie and the police.
Leslie: Tad, no, you don't understand how much you mean to me. I have plans --
Tad: So do I, and they don't include you. You better catch up, Leslie. This little game of yours is over. You're busted, and you've got only yourself to blame.

[Sirens and tires screech] [Leslie tears open her blouse and throws things around the room]

Tad: What the hell do you think you're doing?
Leslie: Thank God! Thank God you're here!

Liza: Is Hayley asleep?
Adam: She's in bed. I don't know whether she's asleep. How's Colby?
Liza: Winifred's with her. I don't want her to be alone until Arlene is caught.
Adam: I looked at the security tapes.
Liza: Was it Arlene?
Adam: Maybe. She had her back to the camera. It was too dark in that room. I couldn't --
Liza: I see. So you've seen, with your very own eyes, someone who could be Arlene in our home. What is it going to take to convince you that she's out there and she's doing this to us?

[Adam dials the phone]

Adam: It's Adam. I want somebody found. Arlene Vaughan Chandler.

Bartender: You know, I usually remember the good-looking ones, but this one -- sorry, man, I can't help you.
Mateo: Come on. Her ex-husband used to own this joint. She came here all the time. You haven't seen her?
Bartender: Look, man, I just started. Maybe she quit coming to the joint once her old man sold it. But you're more than welcome to show her around if you want.
Mateo: I already did. Thanks for the beer.
Bartender: All right.

Mateo: Hey, guys. What's up? Have you seen this woman? Have you? Her name's Arlene.
Man: No, not lately.
Second man: No, I'd remember her. She hasn't been around.
Mateo: Well, if you do see her, here's my card. Give me a call, all right? Drinks on me. Thanks.

[What looks like Arlene's legs are shown walking out of the restroom and sitting down at a table]

Man: Here you go. Just the way you like it. Extra vodka, extra olives. Here's to you, Arlene.

Officer: We got a call about a robbery. What's going on here?
Leslie: He did this to me.
Tad: Whoa. Whoa, wait a minute. Wait a minute. That -- that's not true.
Leslie: Look at my blouse.
Tad: She is lying to you.
Officer: Look, just hold on. You called this in?
Tad: Yes, that's right. I called it in. She stole from me.
Leslie: That's a lie.
Officer: What's missing?
Tad: She took a credit card and my wedding ring.
Leslie: Check his wallet. Nothing is missing.
Officer: Is that true?
Tad: Well, technically, yes. That's only because she just gave it back to me.
Officer: How'd your blouse get torn?
Leslie: He attacked me.
Tad: Oh --
Leslie: We were having an affair. I tried to break it off. He wouldn't take no for an answer.
Tad: That is so ridiculous!
Leslie: You ask the clerk at the Valley Inn. He dragged me through the lobby!
Officer: You brought her here forcibly?
Tad: No, no --
