ALL MY CHILDREN

JUNE 21, 2001

[Music plays]

[Music stops]

Stuart: Excuse me. Could I -- can I interrupt you all just for a second? I want to thank you all for coming and being so generous in all of your bidding tonight. I wish we could have made enough to give everybody the help that they need, but we can't do that yet, but -- well, until that day, we just have to keep remembering in our hearts the people that are suffering with HIV and AIDS by giving them love and affordable medical treatment.
Marian: And giving them hope.
Stuart: As usual, my wife says it far better than me. Yes, the donations will give them hope. I thank you.

[Applause]

David: What's the story, Adam? You haven't returned my call.
Adam: I'm a busy man.
David: Really? Too busy to keep your own son out of jail?
Adam: Not now.
David: Well, you see, you don't seem to understand, Adam. This is a limited-time offer. You help me out or I hand your thieving, pill-popping son over to the police.
Adam: You don't have a thing on J.R.
David: As a matter of fact, I have concrete evidence on J.R., which I'm sure would be of great interest to Lt. Frye over there.
Adam: You're making the whole thing up.
David: Adam, fingerprints don't lie.

Laura: Leo, there's one thing I want to do before it's too late.
Leo: What? Anything.
Laura: We just got married. Aren't the bride and groom supposed to dance?
Leo: Uh -- yeah, it's a -- it's a little tricky the way they got you all hooked up here, but I think we can work it. You ok to stand?
Laura: I'm a little tired.
Leo: Well, then, stand on my feet like we did before. Let me do the hard part.
Laura: I'll hurt you.
Leo: No. What do you weigh? Well, look at my feet. Look at that. They're like boats. See that? Hop aboard. Come on. There you go. There you go. Ok. All right. I guess the band forgot their amplifiers, huh?
Laura: No. I can hear the music. Can't you?

Brooke: You found a heart for Laura?
Erica: It's the miracle you've been waiting for. I know that it's very hard to believe.
Brooke: I swear, if you are messing with me --
Erica: I'm trying to help you, Brooke!
Brooke: Help me? By what, getting my hopes up when you don't even know what you're talking about?
Erica: Brooke, I'm talking about a gunshot victim who is lying in the ICU. Right now. No, Brooke, wait. Brooke --
Brooke: Oh. Oh.
Brooke: Oh, Ryan, I'm -- I'm sorry.
Erica: Brooke --
Brooke: Really. Things are just jumbled up right now. There's some good things and some -- some terrible things. I think that my daughter might have a chance.
Erica: Brooke!
Brooke: They brought somebody into the ICU. with a gunshot wound and -- and if they don't survive --

[Ryan gasps]

Brooke: I know, I know. It's a terrible thing to hope for. But if I can talk to the family and if it's a match and if this person doesn't survive, then -- then Laura can have a chance to have a new heart.
Brooke: I --
Erica: Oh, this shouldn't have happened.
Brooke: Wha-- what?
Erica: You ran out before I had a chance to tell you who is the gunshot victim.
Brooke: Oh, my -- oh, my God. It's Gillian. It's Gillian? Oh --

Bianca: Mom, what is it? Did Brooke find out something bad about Laura?
Erica: No.
Bianca: Then what's going on? Mom, you look like you're going to faint or something.
Erica: Oh, Bianca.
Bianca: Mom, what is it?

Adam: Oh, sweetheart, can I offer you a drink?
Liza: What did he want?
Adam: He wanted an answer.
Liza: Well, you didn't give him one, did you? You can't give him an answer. It's not going to solve anything.
Adam: It may keep my son from being arrested for breaking and entering and using drugs.
Liza: Well, you know that's not handling the problem because he is taking the drugs.
Adam: Will you stop saying that?
Liza: I'm going to keep saying it until somehow it sinks in. He's in trouble.
Adam: Well, we can't help him if they lock him away in some hellhole.
Liza: "We"? They're going to lock you away in the same hellhole. Do you understand that if you help David out, tampering with juries and bribing judges and doing all of those things you shouldn't, what is that going to accomplish? Because we're talking about a guy that's hurt a lot of people.
Adam: You mean your beloved Tad? Well, believe it or not, my priorities put J.R. way ahead of Tad Martin.

Hayley: Hi. How you doing?
Liza: Oh, you know.
Hayley: You all right? I saw you talking to my dad.
Liza: Yeah. Well, I wasn't throttling him.
Hayley: Yeah, but you look like you wanted to.
Liza: Do you mind?
Hayley: Oh, no.
Liza: Ahem. I'm good at this. It's just things are really sort of a mess with Adam and me, and JR's in the middle.
Hayley: What's the problem?
Liza: We found out that your brother's taking drugs.
Hayley: You're kidding me.
Liza: No. Adam --
Hayley: It's like a family curse.
Liza: He's not going to be able to handle this -- he's not handling it.
Hayley: Well, maybe I can. I mean, if there's one thing I know anything about, it's addiction.

Laura: I was just starting to feel safe. God, it's getting harder to talk.
Laura: I was living on the street, and Brooke took me in. She fed me. And I'll never forget this big glass of milk. It was the best thing I ever tasted in my whole life.
Leo: Milk it is. All right, look, this is what I want you to do. I want you to hold down the fort for me while I go raid the nurses' station, all right?
Laura: Um --
Leo: They got a fridge in there, so I think they have gallons of milk.
Laura: I shouldn't drink it.
Leo: Well, it's our honeymoon, Laura. One sip won't kill you. All right? And then I'm going to cut you off, though, ok?

Zora: How is she?
Leo: She's tired. I feel like she's starting to slip away, Zora.
Leo: She is, isn't she?
Zora: The Muga scan results are back. Now, that's one way of measuring the job that the heart is doing. Now, the normal reading is 45%. Laura is at 8%.
Leo: 8?
Zora: I -- I'm sorry. She -- she is getting worse, much faster than we expected. I'm sorry.
Leo: So it's -- it's hopeless, right?
Zora: Hey -- it is if you let her give up.

Hayley: So, did you confront J.R.?
Liza: Well, yeah, and he said that he didn't take anything, and then he said he took one pill.
Hayley: Oh, well, I mean, I used to use that all the time in my drinking days -- "oh, I only had one, I swear."
Liza: So you think that he's done this more than once?
Hayley: You don't?
Liza: I have a bad feeling, yeah.
Hayley: You know, that night that we got into the accident, I thought he was high then.
Liza: But they tested him for drugs. He was clean.
Hayley: Well, his urine was clean. And these kids nowadays, they're very sophisticated. He could have switched the urine sample.
Liza: You know, I keep trying to tell his father that, but he won't listen.
Hayley: Well, that's because he loves his son and he's afraid.
Liza: Adam?
Hayley: Well, yeah. I mean, he saw what alcohol did to me and to Skye, and Arlene.
Liza: And you think JR's really gone that far?
Hayley: There's really only one way to find out -- just maybe if I get him talking.
Liza: Well, you know, he lied to Adam and to me about everything.
Hayley: Yeah, but when I was drinking, I was a really good liar, so maybe I'll at least be able to detect if he's conning me.
Liza: Thanks.

Liza: Hey, you don't need to stand over here all by yourself.
J.R.: No. I'm good.
Liza: Well, you know, your sister misses you. She'd love to say hello.

Leo: As good as you remembered?
Laura: Better.
Leo: Oh, good. How so?
Laura: Well, drinking the milk in Brooke's living room, it's like I finally felt home. I felt safe.
Leo: And that's how you feel with me?
Laura: Even more so. I wish I could tell you how much, but it's getting harder to talk.
Leo: Well, don't -- then don't. I got a big mouth. I can yippy-yap for the both of us, ok? All right. The topic being, where the heck are we going to go for our honeymoon? Let's see. Ok, we're -- we're flying in our private jet, ok? And you get to pick wherever we want to land.
Laura: Venice.
Leo: Venice it is. All right, let's see. And you're wearing your wedding dress, and you look so sexy, I can't even take my eyes off you. And I got -- I got this -- this morning coat, you know, like they wear, and those geeky pinstripe trousers?

Leo: Love Italian style! Bellissima!
Laura: Wow! It's beautiful!
Look, it's like the whole world floats.
Leo: Didn't I tell you? Venice is the place for romance.
Laura: Wow. I always wanted to come here, but I never thought I would. Leo: Well, Venice is fine,
but if you want atmosphere, there's only one place in the world.
Laura: Oh, here in your arms?
Leo: Aw. Ok, two. Here in my arms and Paris.
Laura: Can we go there, right now? Like before the sun sets?
Leo: Yeah.

Brooke: Ryan, please let me explain.
Ryan: Forget it.
Brooke: I didn't -- I didn't know it was Gillian that they brought into the ICU.
Ryan: Well, now you know, so you can leave.
Brooke: I'm so sorry that you're in pain. I wish I could help. I know what it feels like.
Ryan: You have no idea.
Brooke: Ryan, I lost my youngest daughter years ago, and now I'm minutes away from losing another child. You and I are both in pain. I know I don't have the right. I don't know anything. Do you?
Ryan: What you're going through is horrible. I know that.
Brooke: Do you? Then help me, Ryan.
Ryan: I can't!
Brooke: But if Gillian -- if she doesn't --
Ryan: Gillian is not dying! Do you want to go see for yourself? Do you? She survived, ok? And she's getting better because I could feel it, so just take her off your list!

Brooke: I don't understand it. Is Gillian going to be ok?
Jake: No. She's not.
Brooke: But Ryan said that --
Jake: Ryan can't let go. Gillian's gone. We've run several tests on her today, and she has no brain stem function.
Brooke: Then is she --
Jake: She's alive, but she's only being kept alive because she's hooked up to life-support.
Brooke: Gillian didn't want Laura to die.
Jake: No. She even signed her donor card when she found out that Laura was diagnosed. The problem is she never made a living will. And Ryan has a right to refuse the donor card. And we must honor his wishes.
Brooke: Oh, I'm a monster.
Jake: Because you want your daughter to live? I don't think so, Brooke.
Brooke: Is there even a chance anymore?
Jake: Laura and Gillian have the same blood type. And that's the first in compatibility.
Brooke: You mean, so Laura and Gillian could be -- could be a match?
Jake: It looks that way so far. And then there's tissue-typing that Ryan would have to approve of, and then, you know, if that confirms the match, then we'd still have time to do the transplant.
Brooke: You mean if Laura hasn't died by then.

Bianca: When Daddy died, I thought, "I can never go through this again, never, ever in my life." But here I am and Laura is dying and Gillian is in ICU.
Erica: And it feels like more than you can bear, doesn't it?
Bianca: Yeah, it does.
Erica: I wish you didn't have to do this. I wish with all my heart. I wish that there was something I could do to save you, Honey.
Bianca: But that's not the way it works. But, I mean, either -- either you keep everybody at a distance and then nobody can hurt you and then you're all alone, or you let people into your heart, and then you lose them, you turn around and they're gone.
Erica: Oh, you made that sound very terrible the way you say that. But I think you're leaving out the crucial part.
Bianca: What?
Erica: What happens when you let yourself love someone. You're right. It makes you vulnerable. But then you gain a strength that you never had on your own. And that's what gets you through the terrible times -- loving and being loved.
Bianca: But some people never find that -- somebody who will love them.
Erica: You will.
Bianca: Do you promise?
Erica: Of course I promise.

J.R.: Why all of a sudden the questions?
Hayley: Because I'm your sister and I can get in your face if I want to, J.R.!
J.R.: Ok. Look, I want you to know I don't have a drug problem.
Hayley: Really? Then why did you take that pill, and what kind of pill was it, anyway?
J.R.: It was a painkiller. And the other guys were taking it. I didn't want them to think I was too good for them.
Hayley: Oh. So you wanted to fit in?
J.R.: Yeah.
Hayley: Just that one time. Well, you know what? Taking drugs is not good, J.R., even if it is just that one time. But I'm not the person that's going to tell you if you have a problem or not.
J.R.: Who will?
Hayley: Only you know that. Honey, take a look around you, and if your life is going to hell, that's a pretty good sign.
J.R.: I guess a lot of things have been falling apart lately.
Hayley: Yeah? Like what?
J.R.: I don't know -- just everything with David Hayward.
Hayley: Oh, I see. So it's not your problem. It's somebody else who's messing up all the time.
J.R.: Do you have any idea what he did to my family?
Hayley: Yeah, I do. Look, maybe you're right. I love you. I love you so much. I want you to promise me something, ok? Promise me.
J.R.: Sure.
Hayley: The next time -- the next time you're out with the gang and they're using and you want to fit in, call me before you take anything.
J.R.: I guess.
Hayley: Call me and I'll come pick you up.
J.R.: What, are you going to roll your way over?
Hayley: Yeah, I'm going to -- I'll roll my way over. We'll work it out. Ok? I'll take you to a meeting.
J.R.: One of those 12-step kind of things?
Hayley: Yeah, a 12-step thing. Yeah, unless you're afraid.
J.R.: Of what?
Hayley: I don't know. You hear a lot of yourself in other people's stories, you know, and sometimes it's scary. Sometimes it's scary to hear how close to the edge you live all the time.
J.R.: Ok. I'll call.
Hayley: Come here. I'm so lucky to have you for my brother. I love you so much, J.R.

David: Excuse me.
David: Hello, J.R. You having fun tonight?
J.R.: Oh, yeah. I mean, come on, it's an AIDS benefit. Party down, man.

David: Lt. Frye. Always a pleasure.
Derek: Enjoying your freedom, I hope.
David: I'm sorry. I don't know what you mean.
Derek: Weren't you informed? They've set your court date.
David: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I heard something about that.
Derek: Which means the clock is ticking. You don't seem too concerned.
David: Oh, I guess that would irritate a few people, huh?

Adam: It makes me nervous when I see you too near a punch bowl.

[David laughs]

David: Well, you can frisk me if you like, Adam, see if I have a flask on me.
Adam: Is that what you and Lt. Frye were talking about?
David: Hmm. No, we really didn't get into it. He informed me that my trial date had been set. But I'm not going to trial. Am I, Adam?
Adam: Well, that depends. Did you mention my son to Lt. Frye?
David: No. No, but I do have a copy of this to give to Lt. Frye just in case.
Adam: What is that?
David: I hired two forensics experts to do a sweep of my hotel room. They lifted fingerprints from the doorknobs, my medical bag -- you know, pretty much every place. You know, the funny thing is they already made a positive ID on someone. It's your son, J.R.
Adam: And how did they match it to him?
David: Hmm. Well, you see, his fingerprints are on file at police headquarters for hitting a cop. You remember that? So where do we stand, Adam? Are you going to help me with my legal problem, or do I hand a copy of this report to the police?

Leo: [French accent] you see why they call it the city of love?
Laura: Leo, the lights are beautiful. Everything glows.
Leo: [Normal voice] Didn't I tell you that Paris is a place for romantics like us?
Laura: Prove it.
Laura: Yeah, that was so wonderful. I'm going to remember my honeymoon trip for the rest of -- forever.
Leo: Me, too.

Laura: My throat's really dry. Do you think you could ask the nurse for some ice chips?
Leo: Bien sur, Madame. Laura: But hurry back
because I think I want to go to Tokyo next.
Leo: All right. I'll refuel the jet and I'll be back in a flash, ok?

Brooke: Leo? There's something I have to tell you.
Leo: About Laura?
Brooke: No. But it's -- it's bad.
Leo: Well, Brooke, I'm a little bit overloaded right now. Could you please save it?
Brooke: You have to know. It's about your friend Gillian Lavery. Someone attacked her at Wildwind. She was shot. And they brought her here. She's in ICU.
Leo: Is she ok?
Brooke: No. It's just a matter right now of when they turn off the machines.
Leo: Oh. Oh, my God.
Brooke: I know. It's unimaginable how this has all worked out. The thing is Gillian's heart was not damaged. So it may be the only thing that's going to help Laura live.
Leo: What about Ryan? He must be in shock.
Brooke: He is. He's in ICU. with Gillian right now. He -- he can't -- he can't let her go.
Leo: Well, did -- did you talk to him about Laura?
Brooke: I tried to talk to him, but it was -- it was too painful.
Leo: All right, well, I'd better try before it's too late.

Ryan: You made me a lot of promises, and now you got to keep them. Remember all the things that you said we were going to do when we got married? Do you remember that? We were going to find a place to live, our own private world, just like we had in the turret. You remember? You said as long as we were alone, that was our world. That's what you said. Do you remember that? Though it took us a long time to realize it -- all my mistakes, all the things you were afraid of. They could have kept us apart for good, but we kept -- we kept finding a way back to each other again. And it's ok because it was only time that we lost and we got -- we've got our whole lives to make up for that. When you get better -- and I mean this -- I don't want to waste another second, ok? Gilly, can you hear me? I know you can. I know you can. But I really need you to open your eyes for me. Ok, you need to rest. You rest. It's ok. But just remember the promise that you made me on our wedding day. You gave me your heart. You gave it to me, and I'm not giving it away, not ever because I need it. I need your heart. I need your love to keep fighting, all right? We have to keep fighting. Don't give up on me because I will never give up on you.

Stuart: We call this a day of compassion. But what about the rest of the year? Every day, people are suffering with HIV and AIDS, and we have to remember them and keep them in our hearts. Until we can find a cure or a vaccine for AIDS, this virus is going to keep taking lives --

David: Have you come to a decision, Adam?
Adam: You have a gift for blackmail, my friend.
David: Hmm. Thank you.
Adam: I'm going to do what you want. I'll bribe everyone in that courtroom from the judge to the washroom attendant. You'll walk out a free man cleared of all charges against you if -- if you drop this vendetta against my son right now.
David: He broke into my room, Adam. He stole medicine from my medical bag.
Adam: You're going to forget all that. And you're not going to use any of this so-called evidence to get him arrested.
David: All right. You have my word.
Adam: What the hell is that worth?
David: Hmm. I guess you'll just have to wait and see.

[Monitor beeps]

Laura: Mom? I didn't get a chance to thank you.
Brooke: For -- for what, Honey?
Laura: For everything. For the milk.
Brooke: The milk?
Laura: I told Leo how you took me home. You saved my life.
Brooke: Oh. Sweetheart, you saved my life. Shh. Haven't you figured that out by now? I love you so very, very much.
Laura: Mom? Do you know that I love you?
Brooke: Yes. Honey, yes.

[Monitor alarm]

Jake: Ryan, can I talk to you outside?
Ryan: No, Jake. You can say it right here. And remember, she can hear you. That's what they say about people in comas -- that they can hear you.
Jake: It's because when a person's in a coma, only parts of their brain are affected. But we did three EEG's. And none of them show any evidence of electrical activity.
Ryan: Then why is she still breathing? I'm not blind. I can see that she's breathing.
Jake: The machines are breathing for her.
Ryan: You don't know that.
Jake: Yes, we do. Earlier today, we did an Apnea test, three times. And that means that very briefly we turned the ventilator off. And Gillian couldn't breathe on her own. Her lungs were doing nothing. I've gone over all of this data. I've taken her to the specialists here on-call. I'm sorry, Ryan. They're all in agreement. It's time.
Ryan: You stay away from my wife!
Jake: Ryan, Ryan, listen to me --
Ryan: You stay away!
Jake: Listen!
Ryan: What about your stupid machines? Can they feel her spirit, Jake?
Jake: Listen to me --
Ryan: Can they feel that? Because it's in the room right now! And I don't want you anywhere near her!
Jake: Ryan, listen to me, please.
Ryan: Why don't they just touch your hand? It's still warm. And then they would know, they would know you'd never leave me, ever.

ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Rosa: Mateo, please? You have to help me, please.

Shannon: There you are, J.R. Mindy: You'll never guess what's up.

David: We may have a miracle yet. Just hold on.
