Vanessa: Excuse me. Hayley Chandler Santos, right?
I met you at the opening
of your fantastic club.
Vanessa Bennett.
Hayley: Hi.
Vanessa: You obviously have
your father's business sense
because I understand S.O.S. Is
a runaway success.
Is that what you're doing here,
sort of avoiding the crowd?
Hayley: No, not exactly.
Vanessa: You know, I was
hoping to find someone who hated
to dine alone like I do.
Hayley: I'm sorry?
Vanessa: Well, would you mind
if I join you?
I was about to have lunch,
anyway.
Hayley: Oh --
Vanessa: And did I tell
you how your father and I met?
It was a transatlantic cruise.
Don't ask how many years ago.
Hayley: I don't think
I remember him mentioning that.
Vanessa: Oh, of course not.
I mean, why now with his new
marriage and everything.
Although I do understand that
everyone was shocked that
he took Liza Colby back.
But second marriages are,
oh, so impossibly romantic.
I mean, think about it --
the chance to do it right
the second time around is
so poignant.
Hayley: Vanessa, I'm sorry.
I just remembered I'm very late
for an appointment.
Vanessa: Oh, darling,
you haven't touched a bite,
it doesn't look like.
Surely you've got a minute.
Hayley: Don't worry,
I'll sign my bill on
the way out.
Vanessa: Well, another time.
[Doorbell rings]
[Ring]
Raquel: Hi.
What has six feet and smiles?
Mateo: Listen, Raquel --
Raquel: Exactly.
Max made it up.
You see, my two feet
and the four legs on the walker.
Mateo: Yeah, yeah.
I get it, I get it.
Raquel: Oh, can you believe
that I made it over here all
by myself?
Mateo: Are you sure you're
supposed to be doing this?
Raquel: Yeah, Kelly said
I should just go for it, so here
I am.
Where's Hayley?
I want her to see.
Mateo: Oh, uh, she's not
here.
Raquel: Oh.
She left for work already?
Darn.
I wanted to show off for both
of you.
I'm really starting to pick up
speed.
Oh.
You have no idea how good it
feels to get around and to go
outside and not have to ask
for every little thing.
Mateo: Where's Max?
Raquel: He's on a play date.
Remember I told you, with Danny?
His mom's taking them
to the batting cages.
Mateo: That's good.
He needs friends.
Raquel: So much.
With all the moving that we did,
he never really had the chance
to get close to other kids.
I tried so much to make up
for it, but --
well, I guess if I would have
made more room for other people
in our lives, maybe he wouldn't
be so afraid of Hayley.
Mateo: There's so much
to figure out with kids, huh?
Raquel: Yeah. Yeah.
Mateo: You know,
but you loved him and you kept
him safe.
Raquel: Well, I tried.
Mateo: No, you did it.
You did it.
No matter how hard it was
for you, you did it, and I'm
just starting to realize what
that takes.
Raquel: You and Hayley did
everything for Max and for me.
I mean, you -- you took care
of us and --
I don't understand, Mateo.
You did everything for us.
What's wrong?
Teo?
What is it, Mateo?
What's wrong?
Jake: Everything's back
from the lab.
Dixie: And I trust that it's
good news?
Jake: Yeah, your heart
and kidney are fine, which rules
out my major concerns.
Your blood pressure's fine,
100/70.
It's normal.
Blood sugars are normal.
You're not anemic.
Dixie: Ok.
Then why did I faint, and more
than once?
I mean, there has to be
a reason, Jake.
Don't tell me this means days
of testing.
Jake: No.
No, this means that
you're pregnant.
Vanessa: Palmer.
Palmer: Well --
Vanessa: How delightful
to see you again.
Palmer: Vanessa.
Vanessa: I couldn't walk out
without saying hello.
Palmer: You know Reginald
Hightower?
Vanessa: I don't want
you to get up, of course.
Yes, Reggie.
We met in Capri, summer of 1995,
Cissy Waterman's villa.
Reginald: Yes, I remember it
very well.
Nice to see you again, Vanessa.
Vanessa: Nice to see you.
I don't want to interrupt you,
gentlemen.
Palmer: No, no, no,
please, please, don't rush off.
No, Reggie and I would love
to have you join us, right?
Reginald: Of course.
Vanessa: Well --
Palmer: No, no, I insist.
Vanessa: Thank you,
thank you.
Only for a moment, though,
if Reggie promises to tell me
what he's doing in Pine Valley.
Reginald: Oh, business.
We were discussing Palmer's role
in the future of Cortlandt
Electronics.
Vanessa: What, you've got
some wonderful new device
in the works?
Reginald: Well, he hopes
to remain chairman of the board.
Vanessa: Of course he does.
Why wouldn't he?
Palmer: Well, because
my insatiable wife received
so many stocks for our divorce
settlement that she's now trying
to replace me at my office.
Vanessa: What, destroy
the company in the process?
How foolish.
Palmer: Well, you know,
it's a vendetta.
She's creating a crisis
of confidence.
Vanessa: Ah.
Reggie, surely you don't share
that?
You think Palmer should stay
at the helm.
Reginald: Well, frankly,
I've been wondering if a change
isn't for the best.
The third- and fourth-quarter
earnings were down.
Vanessa: Oh, well,
simply because of the Asian
market bottoming out,
but Cortlandt stock is still
blue chip.
For heaven's sakes,
Palmer's still the wiz kid.
I mean, he's the one who created
this whole new area.
You know, you throw your weight
behind an unknown, I'm afraid
you're going to send some
shivers all the way up and down
wall street.
Reginald: Well, perhaps
you're right.
Vanessa: Well, a word
of advice that I'm sure you've
given others -- it ain't broke,
don't fix it.
Reginald: Oh, you're right,
Vanessa.
Why take an unnecessary risk.
Palmer, you've got my vote.
Palmer: Well, thank you.
Reginald: But I want to be
kept informed on the
Y2K problem.
Palmer: Oh, of course,
of course.
Absolutely.
Reginald: Yes, well, you can
thank Vanessa.
Palmer: I certainly will.
Vanessa: Please.
Reginald: Well, my pilot's
waiting.
If I'd known you'd be here
I would have arranged my
schedule differently.
Vanessa: Ooh, you're such
a terrible flirt, Reggie.
Now go get your plane, and tell
Patsy hello.
Reginald: Will do.
Bye-bye, Palmer.
Palmer: Well, you can see
the havoc that Opal is wreaking.
I mean, even our most loyal
board members are beginning
to waver.
Vanessa: Oh, nonsense.
Come on, Reggie knows you're
a financial wizard.
Besides, he just likes to be
courted.
Anyone else who needs
reassurance?
Palmer: No, I don't think so.
I've been in conference every
day this week.
Vanessa: It must be exhausting
for you.
Palmer: Yeah.
But there is one person I really
want to make sure of.
That's Erica.
In fact, I'm going to go see
her right away.
Vanessa: Oh, then you haven't
heard.
Palmer: No. What?
Vanessa: Poor Erica.
It's absolutely heartbreaking.
Raquel: What is it, Teo?
Mateo: I don't want to get
into it right now, ok?
Raquel: Are things still
going well at S.O.S.?
Because if you're having
financial problems,
Max and I can get by with a lot
less.
I've already told you that.
Mateo: Please, Raquel,
it's between Hayley and me.
[Doorbell rings]
Adam: Hello, Mateo.
Mateo: Adam.
Adam: Where's my birthday
girl?
Mateo: Oh, uh --
she's asleep.
Adam: Ah.
Mateo: We had a late night
last night and, you know,
she's wiped.
I don't want to wake her up.
Plus, we're working
tonight, so --
Adam: Oh, no, no,
no, let her sleep, of course.
Mateo: Yeah.
You've met Raquel, right?
Adam: Yes, of course.
Hello, Raquel.
It's good to see you up
and about.
Raquel: Thank you,
Mr. Chandler.
I had no idea it was Hayley's
birthday.
Adam: Yes, it's a big one.
25 Years old today.
Hardly seems possible.
Raquel: Aw.
Adam: I've left strict
instructions with Colby not
to get old nearly as quickly.
Mateo: I heard Liza carried
Colby during the whole ceremony.
I'm sorry I missed that.
Adam: It was unforgettable,
my friend.
All my girls were
extraordinarily beautiful.
You'll see the pictures.
Mateo: I'm sure.
Adam: Mateo, we've had
our disagreements, but you've
made my daughter safe and happy,
and that's the only thing that
matters to me.
Well, let me leave this for her.
I don't want my girl to think
for a second that she's one bit
less precious just because
I have new baby.
Mateo: She knows that.
Adam: Hayley will be
my little girl forever.
Mateo: Of course.
Adam: Well, would you tell
her to call me?
Ask her to call me when
she wakes up.
Mateo: Yeah, I will, I will.
Thanks for stopping by.
Give Liza and Colby my love, ok?
Adam: I will.
Mateo: Thanks a lot. Bye.
Raquel: Bye.
Adam: Bye.
Raquel: Why did you tell
Adam Chandler that Hayley was
sleeping?
Mateo: I'm such a bad liar.
Raquel: You said she was
at work.
Mateo: You said she was
at work.
I didn't correct you.
Raquel: Wait a minute --
I don't understand.
Mateo: Hayley left me.
[Telephone rings]
Hayley: Hello?
No -- yes. Yes.
No, I haven't checked
the bathroom yet.
I don't know if I need towels.
I'll let you know if I do.
Yeah.
No, I don't know how much longer
I'll be staying.
Yeah, I will.
Hayley Reading: "It is ironic that
we who have thought ourselves
so unique follow a pattern that
is so easily recognizable that
our experiences can be
considered typical.
Typical of an alcoholic,
that is."
Dixie: I'm -- I'm pregnant?
Are you sure?
Jake: Well, I can run
the tests again, but,
yeah, I'm sure.
Dixie: I mean, it's not
possible.
I mean, Tad and I, you know,
we use birth control.
We're very careful.
Jake: Nothing's 100%.
Dixie: No, that's true.
Well, I guess that makes sense.
I mean, doesn't it?
Jake: It does?
Dixie: Well, yeah,
because, I mean, I've been
queasy and I've been lightheaded
and having to take naps
in the middle of the afternoon.
Wow.
This is so great.
I'm going to have a baby.
Jake: Yeah, if that's what
you want.
Dixie: Well, yeah.
Of course it's what I want.
I mean, god, I've wanted to have
a baby, you know, another baby
for a long time, and especially
a baby with Tad.
I just -- I just didn't think it
was possible because I've been
sick.
You know, I mean, I've been
cleaning out the attic
and getting rid of all the baby
stuff and the shoes and the toys
and everything.
I just never expected this.
Jake: To be honest,
I really didn't expect it,
either.
Dixie: Well, I guess it just
goes to show that some things
are just out of your hands,
no matter how many precautions
you take.
Jake: Yeah, but those
precautions were there
for a reason.
They haven't changed, Dixie.
Dixie: Oh, come on, I mean
a baby -- it changes everything.
Jake: Not really.
You still have one kidney.
You still have a history
of heart disease.
Dixie: Oh, come on, Jake.
I mean, I'm going to be fine.
Jake: I know you want
to believe that, and I want
to believe that, too,
but, Dixie, there are very
substantial risks in this
situation for both you
and the baby.
Dixie: Jake, what are
you saying?
Jake: Kidney failure.
Need I remind you that a couple
of months ago you were near
death in a coma?
Dixie: But that's -- that's
all over, and you just said that
my heart and my kidney are
functioning normally.
Jake: They are, they are,
and they will continue
to function normally as long
as they don't take on more than
they can handle.
Dixie: Meaning what,
a baby?
Jake: Well, yes.
I mean, obviously, there's going
to be stresses caused
by the physical changes
in your body, but there's also
going to be an additional blood
volume that needs to be pumped
and filtered, which is going
to cause your remaining kidney
to be working overtime.
It might fail.
You might have to go
on dialysis.
You might have to go on dialysis
for the rest of your life.
Dixie: Is that the worst-case
scenario?
Jake: I'm just trying to tell
you that, Dixie, you have
a husband and two beautiful
children who would be lost
without you.
Dixie: Well, Jake, I also
have a child inside of me that
wants to be there.
Jake: I know, but you're only
a few weeks along.
Dixie: Which means that
I have time to do everything
right from the beginning.
I mean, this child is like a gift from God.
I mean, it got here despite
precautions, despite birth
control.
It wants to be there.
It's meant to be.
Jake: If you're going
to carry this child to term,
there's going to be constant
monitoring, a very strict diet.
Dixie: I can do that.
Jake: Ok.
No activities that will
overexert you, no emotional ups
and downs.
You can't just throw caution --
Dixie: It's fine.
I know that. It's not forever.
Jake: All right, this is very
serious.
I just want you to know that.
You're not going to be able
to control everything, no matter
how careful you are.
Can you accept that?
Because I'm not sure Tad will be
able to.
Dixie: Are you saying that
you don't think I should have
this child?
Jake: Dixie, I can't make
that decision.
Dixie: Well, that's right,
you can't.
Jake: I just want you to be
aware of the toll that this is
going to take on you.
And please talk to Tad.
Dixie: I will.
I'll talk to Tad.
Jake: All right,
soon, and tell him everything
that I've told you.
Dixie: I will, I will, ok?
Just do me a favor.
Let me talk to Tad before
you say anything at all,
ok, so that I can -- I can tell
him how I feel first.
Jake: All right. I will.
I won't say anything.
Dixie: Ok.
Liza: Hello?
Oh, hi.
Mind if we interrupt?
Jake: No, no.
How's she doing?
She ok?
Liza: Oh, she's wonderful.
We're here for the checkup.
Look.
Dixie: Hi.
Liza: Isn't she cute?
Dixie: Can I see her?
Liza: Yeah.
Dixie: Hi, precious.
Aw.
Liza: I'm not getting
in the way her
Dixie: No, no, no, no.
We're done. We're all finished.
Oh, sweetie, baby, you're
so beautiful.
Liza: Yeah.
Dixie: Hi.
Liza: Well, we were
on the way -- could you hold
this for a second?
Dixie: Yeah.
Liza: We were on the way
to the checkup and I just
thought she might like to say
hello to her father.
[Colby fusses]
Jake: Hello.
Liza: She's hungry.
Jake: I hope she wants
to see --
Liza: Here you go.
Jake: Oh, hello.
Oh, you've just made my day.
You know that?
You just made my day.
I think she recognizes me.
Dixie: Of course she does.
Liza: It's so sweet when
he feeds her.
Actually, there was another
reason why I came by, which is
really to tell you that Adam is
planning this big surprise party
for Hayley.
It's for her 25th.
And if you could watch
her tonight, it would certainly
free me up.
Jake: You kidding me?
I'd love to.
Liza: Oh, great.
I meant to call Tad
because I wanted to invite
you guys.
I know that Adam would like
the whole family there.
Dixie: Oh, yeah, sure.
Of course we'll try.
Definitely, thanks.
Liza: Well, good, good.
I'll get you the details, then.
Dixie: Ok.
Liza: Well, I actually
probably should take her back
because I got to go.
Jake: No, no, I will go
with you.
Liza: Ok.
Jake: I'll go with
you to Dr. Neufield's office.
You ok?
Dixie: Oh, yeah, I'm fine.
Jake: All right.
Dixie: Fine.
Well, bye, Colby.
You certainly made your mommy
and daddy very happy.
Liza: Oh, she's everything
to me.
Dixie: Yeah, I can tell.
Ok, bye.
[Hayley Dreams]
Hayley: Oh, I love
my birthday this year!
Adam: After the cake,
there will be a magician.
Hayley: A real one?
Adam: What other kind
would I be?
Hayley: It's you, Daddy?
Mateo: Blow out your candles.
Blow out your candles.
Raquel: Yeah, they're
starting to melt.
Max: I want cake.
Mateo: Come on, come on,
make a wish.
Hayley: Oh, that's right.
I have to think.
Mateo: Oh, you know what
you want.
What we both want.
Adam: Wish for whatever
your heart desires, Hayley.
Whatever will make you happiest.
And you know I can make it come
true.
Mateo: Make our dreams come
true, Hayley.
Hayley: Ok.
Here goes.
Hayley: What happened?
Adam: It worked.
They're gone.
Hayley: They're gone?
You did it?
Max and Raquel are gone?
Oh, Mateo, they're gone!
Now we can get married!
I can be your bride and we can have babies!
Mateo: Where's Max?
Where's Raquel? What did you do?
Hayley, I thought you loved me.
Hayley: I do.
Mateo: You took my son away
from me.
I'll always hate you for that.
[Hayley gasps and wakes up]
Hayley: Happy birthday.
Raquel: Why would Hayley
leave you?
Mateo: Come on, Raquel.
Look what I asked her to do.
Look what I asked you guys
to put up with.
I thought we could live side
by side in matching condos,
like some patched-together
family.
It only made Max more confused.
It didn't help any of us.
Raquel: Don't say that.
We're still adjusting.
Mateo: Adjusting?
Come on, he's burning things.
He broke the window.
He's not adjusting.
Raquel: We're getting him
help, Mateo.
Mateo: He shouldn't need
a shrink!
I'm his father.
He should trust me,
like I trusted my father.
Raquel: Yeah, well, what does
that have to do with Hayley
leaving you?
Mateo: She knows how
he feels.
She knows that he's scared
and unhappy, that he thinks
she's a threat.
Raquel: I'm sorry.
Mateo: And we wanted to get
married, you know?
We're still not married.
We have to wait for the baby.
Raquel: Yeah, it'll happen.
Mateo: And she's starting
to think that it might not
happen.
She almost took a drink,
and that scares her,
and it scares me.
I got to go.
I got to get to the club.
Raquel: You --
you and Hayley were doing
so well before Max and
I showed up.
Mateo: Close to perfect.
Raquel: Yeah.
Mateo: But you see, I made a big mistake.
Raquel: What do you mean?
Mateo: I didn't tell
her about us.
Liza: Didn't expect you to be
at Colby's checkup.
Adam: Well, obviously
Dr. Neufield didn't, either.
Did you hear that crack about,
"oh, well, usually fathers don't
feel they need to be present
at their daughter's weighing"?
Liza: Oh, it wasn't a crack.
You are a very devoted father
and he was enjoying that.
Adam: Really? Well.
Do you believe that she's
11 pounds already?
Liza: Mm-hmm, my back can.
Adam: Oh, well, you'll have
to just let me carry
her from now on.
Liza: Done.
Oh, how's Hayley?
Adam: Oh, she was asleep,
poor baby.
I saw Mateo.
He said they're both going
to have to work tonight.
Liza: Oh, well, you know,
I have an idea.
Have you made any plans
for the party yet?
Adam: No, I wanted to talk
to you about that.
Liza: Hmm.
Ok, suppose you just listen.
Adam: Ok.
Vanessa: Erica's just
determined to have this
procedure done to her face
and it's still highly
experimental, so I am
so frightened for her.
But what if something goes
wrong?
I mean, who's she going
to turn to?
I mean, even if everything goes
perfectly well, it's got to be
terrifying.
Palmer: Erica does not lack
courage.
Vanessa: But somehow I feel
so protective.
I mean, I think she feels
the same way, too, because
she did ask me to move
in with her when she was
recuperating.
And of course I said yes,
but this infuriated some
of her friends.
Palmer: Yeah.
Including my ex-wife, I'm sure.
Vanessa: Well, I think Opal
just felt she'd been replaced
somehow.
I mean, she badgered Erica
constantly.
Palmer: She never, ever stops
interfering.
Vanessa: There I was,
all of a sudden overstepping
my bounds?
I became a leech abusing Erica's
hospitality.
I couldn't even bother
to respond to that, honestly.
Palmer: Well, good for you.
Vanessa: But I did move out,
Palmer, because I couldn't have
Erica defending me -- not now….
the last thing she needs
in the world is that.
Palmer: You say Erica's going
to be gone for a few more days?
Vanessa: Oh, possibly a few
weeks.
Palmer: Well, then I think
I'd better -- I'd better get down there
to Brazil right away
because she's not going to be
back in time for the vote.
So I will leave just as soon
as my jet is ready to go.
Vanessa: Palmer, you are
a marvel.
I love a man of action.
Joe: What's so urgent?
Jake: Well, Dixie came
into the ER Today.
She was alone.
She was complaining
of dizziness.
Joe: Oh, my.
She all right?
Jake: Well, she was pale
and shaky and she actually had
a dizzy spell right in front
of me, so I did a full blood
work up.
Joe: And?
Her heart?
Jake: No.
She's pregnant.
Joe: But she was told
to avoid that.
Jake: I know.
She said it wasn't planned.
She said that her and Tad had
been careful.
Joe: Well, not careful
enough, obviously.
Jake: That's not
the problem, Dad.
She was thrilled.
She's not thinking of herself.
Joe: She's got to start.
Did you explain to her how
dangerous it could be to go
ahead with the pregnancy?
Jake: Yeah, I tried, I tried.
She wouldn't think anything
of it.
Joe: Well, I mean, she's got
to listen to you.
This load on the kidney could
cause renal failure.
We could lose her.
We could lose the baby as well.
Jake: She wasn't listening
to me.
All she talked about was baby
clothes and highchairs.
Joe: Oh, boy.
Tad -- does he know about is?
Jake: No, no, Dixie just
found out.
Joe: She going to tell him --
everything?
Jake: She promised she would.
Tad: Hello!
Honey?
Ah.
I'm home.
How are you, sweetheart?
How is the love of my life?
Palmer: You think I should?
Vanessa: Oh, please,
I'm the last person.
I'm too afraid to give advice
about Erica.
Palmer: Please don't group me
with that coven that she calls
friends.
Vanessa: Oh.
I'm sorry, Palmer.
It's just that I'm afraid
they're not the only ones who
question my affection for Erica.
My own son, David, does as well,
you know.
Palmer: Why's that?
Vanessa: Oh, guilt.
Jealousy? Habit? I don't know.
We haven't been close for years.
Perhaps he resents my mothering
someone else?
I don't know.
He resents me for almost
everything else in the world.
Palmer: You know, I have
a son like that -- Ross, Ross.
We're practically strangers.
Vanessa: Oh, I'm sorry,
Palmer.
There's nothing worse.
Palmer: No.
No, no.
Vanessa: Well, this may sound
strange coming from a mother,
but David is no humanitarian,
you know, in spite of
his medical skills.
Palmer: Well, I know David
a little.
Well, he took care of my niece
in New York.
Vanessa: Mm-hmm.
Let me guess --
he was terribly brilliant
and terribly self-serving.
Palmer: He saved her life.
Then, of course, he secured
a position at Pine Valley
hospital.
Vanessa: Uh-huh.
Well, he saved Erica's
life, too.
Now she's supposed to be down
on her knees in front of him
for the rest of her life?
Well, in spite of the fact,
and never mind that he caused
the accident that robbed
her of her beauty?
Well, you know something?
I don't think she owes him
a thing.
Palmer: You and I think
remarkably alike.
Vanessa: Do we?
Oh, I hope so.
Palmer: I wish we could
continue this, but --
well, if I'm going to leave
tomorrow, I'd better get
to the office.
Vanessa: Oh, which reminds
me -- Erica needs some papers
from Enchantment.
I'd like to get them to her.
Would you take them?
Palmer: Of course, of course.
Vanessa: What's best?
Shall I drop them at
your office, pick them up
here at --
Palmer I have a better idea.
Have dinner with me tonight
and bring the papers along
and we'll see what we can do
about straightening out this
little problem you have
with Erica.
Vanessa: Palmer, that would
be lovely.
Tad: What are you up to?
Dixie: I'm just taking
a moment to think.
Tad: Really?
You mean
you're that lovely for
absolutely no reason?
Dixie: Come on, Tad.
Tad: No, I'm serious.
You look really good.
Well, pretty, you know,
different in an interesting way,
kind of pink.
If that's what the Glamorama
does for women, my mother's
going to make a fortune.
Dixie: Come here.
Tad thought you'd never ask.
Although personally -- mmm --
I would rather go upstairs.
Dixie: Oh, careful.
Liza: Knock, knock.
Dixie: Oh.
Tad: Who's there?
Hey.
Dixie: Hi, Liza!
Liza: I am so sorry
to interrupt you so much today,
but I wanted to get this back
to you.
Dixie: Oh.
Liza: It's the dress that
Colby wore in the wedding
and she's going to be
outgrowing it.
It was in the car when I saw
you at the hospital, but --
Tad: Hospital?
You were in the hospital?
Dixie: No, no, nothing.
I'll explain later.
Everything's fine.
Why don't you put Colby down
here.
Liza: Ok.
Dixie: Put the car seat down.
Liza: That's great.
She's sleeping.
The car is magic.
Dixie: Hi, sweetie.
All comfy?
Liza: Yeah.
She's sleepy.
Dixie: Did Adam figure out
where the party's going to be?
Liza: Oh --
Tad: Party? What party?
Why doesn't anybody tell me
anything?
Liza: I am telling you now.
Adam is throwing a surprise
party for Hayley's birthday
tonight.
Tad: Oh.
Dixie: Oh, I said we'd go,
if that's ok.
Maybe Becca can baby-sit.
Tad: No, that's fine,
absolutely.
Sounds fun.
Speaking of Becca, Scott wants
me to ask you if he can borrow
an editing bay at the station,
and he's probably going to need
me equipment for this
documentary video he's making.
Liza: Well, I suppose so.
Does he know what he's doing?
Tad: Yeah, seems to.
It's supposedly all about
breakups, 49 ways to leave
your lover.
Liza: Hmm.
I assume he's interviewing
you for all 49?
Tad: No, but thank
you for playing.
[Liza laughs]
Tad: Actually, it was Becca's
idea.
Liza: Oh.
Tad: As a matter of fact,
he'd like her to stick around
for the summer to help him
film it.
Dixie: I bet there's other
reasons he'd like her to stick
around.
Tad: Mama's hoping that Becca
will stick around to take care
of Petey.
Dixie: Oh, really?
Tad: Mm-hmm.
Dixie: I didn't know that.
Tad: Well, obviously,
we need some more time alone.
Liza: Oh.
Did I just hear a hint fall?
Tad: Mm-hmm, it's right there
next to your left foot.
No, it wasn't aimed at you,
honey.
Personally, I hope she sticks
around, too.
She could stay here.
She could help out with us.
We could go out more than once
a year.
Dixie: We go out more than
once a year.
Tad: We could finish
a conversation.
Dixie: Oh, well,
that's tempting.
Tad: Ok, so what do you say?
Do you think it's a good idea?
I mean, you never know what
the summer's going to bring.
Dixie: Oh, I love it.
I hope Becca will say yes.
I have a feeling this summer's
going to be full of surprises.
Jake: She's done this before.
She did it with the
pericarditis.
She didn't tell him.
Joe: I can hear her now,
assuring him that she's going
to be ok if only she keeps
her feet up.
Jake: You called it.
I know she wants to keep
the baby.
Joe: You expect anything
else?
Jake: Oh, I don't know.
Maybe I understand why
she wants to
take the risks.
Joe: I guess you do now,
now that you've got Colby.
You'd do anything for her.
Jake: Sure.
I'd be willing to take
any risk.
Joe: Glad you feel that way.
Not all parents do.
Jake: Well, Tad and Dixie
have a lot of love to give.
If anyone wants to have a child,
they should
have one.
Joe: Yep.
If only the world worked
that way.
Jake: With Colby,
I guess I start to look
at the future a little bit
differently, you know.
Joe: How can you ask Dixie
to give that up?
Jake: I can't.
Joe: Nobody can.
This is something Tad and Dixie
are going to have to decide
for themselves.
Jake: Well, I think Dixie's
already decided.
Liza: Hayley doesn't suspect
a thing, so don't blow it.
Tad: Hear that, kid?
No talking.
Liza: Yeah, I'm talking
to you ,Tad.
Dixie: Thanks so much
for stopping by.
Liza: Oh, thank you
for everything.
Come on, sweetpea.
Tad: I'll get the door
for you.
Liza: Oh, thank you.
Take care.
Dixie: You, too.
Liza: Bye.
Dixie: Bye.
Tad: Bye, sweetheart.
Tad: Now,
where were we?
Dixie: Did I ever tell
you how cute I think that
babies are?
Tad: Yeah, all babies are
cute, you know, especially when
they're sleeping.
Dixie: Little girls
especially, though.
Tad: Yeah.
Dixie: Don't you just love
little girls?
Tad: I love little girls,
and I love big girls, too.
You know something?
Dixie: What?
Tad: You feel even better
than you look.
Dixie: Oh, Tad.
Tad: Where are the boys?
Dixie: The boys are playing
with the ferret next door.
I told them to be home in time
for dinner.
Tad: You know there's a joke
in there, right?
What time is dinner?
Dixie: Dinner's in about
a half an hour.
Tad: Is it ready to go?
It's in the oven?
Dixie: Yes, it's in the oven.
Tad: Ok, terrific.
Dixie: Now, wait. Now, wait.
I was going to say --
Tad: No, no, no, you wait.
Come here. Come here a sec.
Tad: Tell you what.
Dixie: What?
Tad: Let's go upstairs
for a while, ok?
Come on.
I think we've got something
to finish other than
a conversation.
Better run.
[Dixie screams]
Singer: I have a smile
stretched from ear to ear
to see you walking down the road
we meet at the lights
I stare for a while
the world around us disappears
it's just you and me
on my island of hope
a breath between us
could be miles
let me surround you
my sea to your shore
let me be the calm you seek
oh, and every time
I'm close to you
there's o much I can't say
and you
just walk away
and I
forgot
to tell you
I love you
