ALL MY CHILDREN

MARCH 1, 2000

David: Well, I'm glad you stopped by.
You can take me out to breakfast and apologize.
Erica: Don't flatter yourself. If I could have found Joe Martin, I never would have bothered you. I need a doctor.
David: Why? What's wrong?
Erica: It's my heart.

Mateo: How's that? Better?
Hayley: Mm-hmm, yeah.
Mateo: Oh. No, I'm losing my touch. Usually a kiss, it makes you feel better.
Hayley: It can't. I know it's exactly what I need right now, so just do me a favor. Wrap your arms around me and don't let go.
Mateo: Ok, ok. Are you -- are you really that nervous about the custody hearing?
Hayley: I tossed and turned all night. There's so many things to consider before I get on the stand.
Mateo: Just keep it simple, you know? Tell the truth, and then if things get ugly, look to me. Direct your whole testimony to me. I'll be a very sympathetic audience.
Hayley: There's something new to this whole mess. Adam confessed something to me last night. You won't believe what he did.
Mateo: The sad thing is I probably will.
Hayley: No, not this. It's too horrible and too sick, even for Adam. You know, and the fact that he chose to tell me last night just makes it that much --
Arlene: Oh, good morning, you two.
Hayley: What is that?
Arlene: Well, I was going to give you breakfast in bed, but since you're up and dressed already -- and looking so great -- except for those bags under your eyes. It's probably all that worry you have to do, going up against Adam this morning, hmm?
Mateo: Let's go. Come on.
Hayley: Yeah.
Arlene: Oh, no, no, no. Let me set the table for two. Breakfast for the lovebirds, huh?
Hayley: Oh, please stop it. Between the food and the nonsense you're dishing out, I could just be sick.
Arlene: Sweetie, I'm just trying to be nice.
Hayley: I know what you're trying to do, and you can forget it. It's not going to work.

Gillian: "Yes, your honor, I'm ready to be a good mother to Colby. I'm going to read 'Heidi' to her. I'm going to play Mozart to her every night. And I'm going to join the TPA." P.T.A. The PTA. "Also, I'll see that she gets all her vaccinations, and a year later, I'll make sure that she gets her booster shot." booster shot?
Edmund: Hey, Gillian. Have you seen Alex today?
Gillian: No, not today.
Edmund: Hmm. Her bed wasn't slept in, and one of her suitcases is missing.
Gillian: You mean she left?
Edmund: Yeah, apparently, without telling anybody. I'm kind of worried about her.
Gillian: Hey, Edmund --
Edmund: Yeah?
Gillian: Where on your body is your booster?
Edmund: What?
Gillian: Like in, you know, children's vaccinations, when you have to get your boosters shot. Edmund: No, no, no.
No, a booster is -- it's an injection. It boosts the immune system and the power of the original injection so the kid doesn't g a specific disease, like polio or mumps.
Gillian: Oh.
Edmund: Ok?
Gillian: Ok, thanks.
Edmund: Ok. What's all this about?
Gillian: You know, it's just today's the hearing of Jake's daughter, and -- and I just don't want to say the wrong things.
Edmund: Ah, Gillian, you'll do fine. Just relax. Don't worry.
Gillian: It's just there's so much that can go wrong, and I don't want to be the one responsible for messing things up.

Hayley: Stop with the happy homemaker routine. It's ludicrous.
Arlene: Oh, you're just cranky. You'll feel a lot better once you have one of my blueberry pancakes.
Hayley: You never cooked a blueberry or a pancake in your life. You made Amanda cook those for you.
Arlene: Isn't she a smart little girl?
Hayley: You had that little girl working for you before school, and you just sat there, sucking on your menthols, didn't you?
Arlene: Oh, I gave up those years ago, baby. They'll kill you. I had a very nice bonding experience with my niece, who needs a whole lot of love right now.
Hayley: Was that your plan, to worm your way into Janet and Amanda's affections because you know how hurt they are right now?
Arlene: Well, if they're hurting right now, then it's right for me to be showing them some affection. Sweetie, I -- look, I know it's late for me to be discovering the power of a loving family. But I hope it's not too late.
Mateo: When are you leaving?
Arlene: Well, Janet wants me to stay here for a while. Hayley -- Hayley, let me be here for Trevor's wife and daughter. Let me be here for you. Especially now since you're going up against Adam, I -- you know, I remember when you were a little girl, w nervous you would get --
Mateo: Arlene, what do you actually remember about Hayley being a little girl? I mean, you were always drunk and hung over. Why don't you ask her what she remembers? Cleaning up after you, cooking for you, keeping your life together.
Arlene: Well, you're right, matt. I don't know where I'd be right now if it weren't for Hayley. Let me pay you back for everything you've done for me.
Hayley: I don't need repayment. I don't need anything from you.
Arlene: Hayley -- Hayley, can't you see that I've changed? I'm not the same person I was. I faced the fact that I have a problem. I know now. I know if there is no first strength, there can't be a 10th. I'll just have to prove it to you, that's all. I'm going to the grocery store. Can I get you -- any special requests for lunch or dinner?
Mateo: Nope.
Hayley: No.
Arlene: Oh, right. You don't know when you're going to be back from the -- from court. What are you going to say to Adam, anyway? It's ok, sweetie. You'll do the right thing. You do most of the time.

[Arlene takes a drink of liquor from a small bottle in her purse]

Arlene: Just to get through the grocery shopping.

Mateo: Don't let her get to you.
Hayley: I'm not.
Mateo: Just ignore her.
Hayley: It's like ignoring a school of piranhas at my toes.
Mateo: Well, what I mean is that you have a more immediate problem to worry about, right?
Hayley: Yeah. Adam.
Mateo: Now, what did he tell you last night?
Hayley: If it was somebody else, I wouldn't believe it. Last night Adam told me that he is Colby's biological father.
Mateo: Oh.

Edmund: Gillian, I doubt very much you're going to be asked any medical questions in court. After all, there is a doctor in the house. His name is Jake.
Gillian: That's true.
Edmund: Yeah.
Gillian: And since you know Jackson Montgomery, I just want to be prepared because he can be so tough. I'm going to be prepared when I get on the stand to be ready when he starts firing those questions.
Edmund: Sweetheart, it's not a trial. It's just a hearing.
Gillian: Yeah. Remember when Ryan was accused of rape?
Edmund: Yeah.
Gillian: He made him say things he didn't want to say, and I just don't want that to happen with me and say the wrong things.
Edmund: What could you possibly say wrong?
Gillian: You know me with my English, when I get nervous, I'm scared I say things that people could interpret the wrong way.
Edmund: Sweetheart, your English charms everyone who hears you. Now, it's not going to be about your language skills or your parental skills. The judge is going to have to listen to Jake and Liza and decide what's best for Colby. That's all
Gillian: If you were a judge and you had to choose between Liza and me, why would you choose me?
Edmund: If I were a judge and I looked at you, I would see a heart bursting with love for that child.

[Door opens]

Gillian: Hey.
Jake: I'm walking around like a zombie because of this custody hearing that's going through my head.
Gillian: Yeah?
Jake: And I guess I took wrong turn because accidentally I ran into this house for sale. I'm not kidding you. It is the perfect house for you, me, and Colby.

Erica: I think that it's an irregular heartbeat. My I feel some pressure right here.
David: Well, when did the problem start?
Erica: Last night.
David: Any other symptoms?
Erica: Well, I want you to understand that I really never would have bothered you if Joe Martin had been on duty.
David: No, no, no, no, no. I'm glad you came to me. You're still under warranty. Didn't you take the two-year service contract at the time of surgery?
Erica: If you're in the habit of mocking patients when they come to you on the verge of a heart attack --
David: Most earthlings have their heart l on this side of their chest.
Erica: I see. Well, I might have known that you wouldn't care.
David: Let me listen to your heart. All right, let's see.

[Knock on door]

Joe: Excuse me. David, are you available for a consult?
David: Yes, whatever you need, Joe. Did you run any tests?
Joe: Yes, we did-- angiogram and MRI. I should have the results in a few minutes.
David: All right, just let me know.
Joe: Ok, I will. Sorry for the interruption.

Erica: I guess I couldn't find Joe because he was with a patient.
David: Your heart sounds perfect, Erica. What's going on?
Erica: Something happened to me last night that really hurt me very much and it really made me feel very, very alone. And I really needed to talk to you. And then I went home and you hadn't called me.
David: Well, you could have called me.
Erica: You could have called me.
David: What happened last night?
Erica: I went to see Myrtle, the woman I've loved like a mother since I lost my own mother. And she was very distant with me. And she just didn't respond to me at all. It was as if I wasn't even there. Why is that, David? Why is it that everyone I love seems to go away?
David: How did Myrtle hurt you?
Erica: Look -- sometimes I feel like everything I have is a mirage. And when that happens, Myrtle is really the only one who can make me see what's real. She talks to me with love and warmth, and I know -- I know that I am much more than image, and I know that I have substance and that I have a heart.
David: Erica, most people experience those feelings at one time or another. But unfortunately for them, they don't have someone solid like Myrtle that could reel them in when they get too far out.
Erica: And now I don't have Myrtle anymore either. When I went to see her last night, who should show up in the middle of everything but Rae Cummings. And they started talking, and they acted as if I was invisible.

Joe: Excuse me.

Erica: And Myrtle actually sent me --

Joe: Excuse me. We're dealing -- the results are back. We're dealing with a thoracic aneurysm. Requires immediate intervention. He's being prepped now. Will you do the surgery?
David: Yes, right away, Joe. Ok, Erica, we're going to have to pick this up later.
Erica: What, you're walking out on me, too?
David: Yeah, this is an emergency. I have to try to save this person's life.
Erica: What about my life? Don't you care?
David: Erica, we can't talk about this right now.
Erica: I don't understand that. This hospital is full of other surgeons. Why can't you ever just be there when I need you to be there for me?
David: I know that you're feeling lost and lonely right now, ok, and I want to listen to everything that you have to say.
Erica: Don't do that. Don't you dare patronize me.
David: But I have a thoracic aneurysm waiting for me right now. That means that there's an artery in this person's chest that's about to blow. And if that happens, he's going to bleed to death. So, sorry, you lose. Look, just -- just wait for me here, ok? The rest of the day is yours, I promise.
Erica: I lose? I lose?

Mateo: That's -- that's impossible. I --
Hayley: Apparently not.
Mateo: Come on, Hayley. How could he -- how could he be Colby's -- it's a trick. He wanted you -- he wanted you to put yourself into a hospital so you couldn't be subpoenaed --
Hayley: He is not lying, Mateo. He is terrified that Jake is going to win custody of Colby and that Liza will never forgive him.
Mateo: What about the clinic? I mean, wasn't she inseminated in a clinic? How could --
Hayley: I don't know! The man is capable of bribing judges. I'm sure he can bribe a doctor just as easily. He wouldn't say anything else.
Mateo: And Liza's in on this?
Hayley: She is now.
Mateo: Well, why -- I mean, come on. If she knows about it, then why is she risking a custody hearing?
Hayley: I don't know. I don't know what is going on in Liza's head. All I know is what Adam told me.
Mateo: Which is what exactly? What did he tell you?
Hayley: He told me that if I got on the stand and then if I made him out to be an unfit father that I would be sending my own sister to go and live with the Martins.
Mateo: Well, I mean, she's your half sister, right?
Hayley: She is my sister. The poor thing is a Chandler, a whole new generation of the walking wounded, like Skye and me, you know? But not like Junior.
Mateo: Well, yeah. I mean, he was raised a Martin, so --
Hayley: Right. Maybe that is what's best for Colby.
Mateo: Well, don't you think she should know the truth, who her father is?
Hayley: I suppose so. I guess that's what's best.
Mateo: Look at it this way. If Adam's really her father, she's going to know, right? Poor Jake. How's he going to take this?
Hayley: Not very well.
Mateo: No. You know what you need?
Hayley: New parents.
Mateo: Well, besides that.
Hayley: Come on, will you stop? We can't. I'm already dressed for court.
Mateo: Besides that.
Hayley: What?
Mateo: Why don't I drop you off at a meeting? Yeah?
Hayley: Yeah, that's what I need.
Mateo: Come here.
Hayley: Take me to Axel.
Mateo: Go, go, go, go.

Jake: And there's not much traffic because it's sitting on a cul de sac, which I think is great because it'll be a lot safer for Colby. And did I tell you about the yard? I'm jumping up and down like an idiot, trying to clear the fence. It's got a huge back yard with an apple tree.
Edmund: Listen, I'll leave you two to discuss houses. You've got a little convincing to do.
Jake: Uh-huh.
Edmund: Good luck in the hearing today.
Jake: Hey, thanks.
Gillian: Thank you, Edmund.

Jake: What's the matter? I know we said that we'd build. I -- but we still can. If you see the place and you don't like it, we can still build.
Gillian: No. No, no. It's not that. It's -- it sounds perfect, and it's close to your parents. It's great.
Jake: Good. I called the real estate agent, see, and they're going to send somebody over to answer questions, look at the floor plan and stuff like that. The final decision is still yours.
Gillian: Jake, it's not the house, ok? You love it, I love it. But don't you think we should just wait until after the hearing?
Jake: Yeah, I know, but I saw it today. I took it as a -- well, it's like a sign.
Gillian: What if something happens and we don't get custody of Colby?
Jake: It won't happen, all right? Why do you think Liza and Adam have been so crazy to get me to drop the suit? Because they're afraid I'm going to win. And they're right. Look, I just wish I could convince you. Everything's going to be fine.
Gillian: I know. I know it. I know it will be.
Jake: Ok. Good. And maybe after the agent leaves, we can go over there and check out the inside.
Gillian: We can't. We have to go to court.
Jake: No, that's all right. No, it'll be just a sec. It'll be good karma. Come on.

[Doorbell rings]

Gillian: Let's go.
Gillian: Hey.
Marian: Uh -- good morning. I'm looking for Dr. Marick.
Gillian: Dr. Marick's not here.
Marian: Oh, that's odd. My company faxed me a memo she wanted me to meet her here. She's interested in one of my exclusive listings.
Jake: Take a closer look at the memo, Marian. It's actually me. I'm the one that's interested in the house.
Marian: Oh, yes, yes. Dr. Martin.
Jake: Sorry about the misunderstanding, Marian. It all happened ally fast. I saw the house today, and I thought it'd be perfect for us.
Marian: You intend to occupy this house if you get custody of my granddaughter?
Jake: Yeah, that's the plan.
Gillian: We could get another agent.
Marian: Oh, it's my listing, Gillian. That's what "exclusive" means.
Jake: So you will show us the house, then?
Marian: Oh, yes, of course, certainly. Selling houses is what I do.
Jake: Great. Come on in, Marian, please.
Marian: Thank you.
Jake: Yep. I was telling Gillian how unique this place is. Beautiful, right?
Gillian: Yeah. He said it was love at first sight.
Marian: Well, it really is special. Here is a picture of the exterior. It's very pretty.
Jake: Well, that's funny. Of course, my folks have lived in that neighborhood all my life. I've grown up there, and I guess I wasn't meant to see it until today.
Marian: It's very special. See? The outside of the house.
Jake: Look at this picture window. I saw this before. It was, like, made to frame a Christmas tree. It's huge.
Marian: Now, this is te foyer. You can tell the staircase is really clever because it makes the room look twice as large. This is the formal dining room. And, by the way, there are hardwood floors through the entire house. This is the back yard.
Gillian: Oh, with the apple tree.
Marian: Yes. You can tell that because of the apples.
Jake: Is this the upstairs floor plan?
Marian: Mm-hmm. That's the master bedroom. It's got a wood-burning fireplace.
Jake: Look at this -- the nursery. There's a nursery.
Marian: Yes. That room was originally built as a nursery.
Jake: Right across from the bedroom. She's going to be right there. We won't even need an intercom. This is the perfect house. Can we see it?
Marian: What, today?
Jake: Yeah. Right now, actually. I might even want to put a binder on it.
Marian: But we have to get to the custody hearing soon.
Jake: I know. It just makes sense to me.
Marian: Oh, it just makes sense to you? Well, let me tell you something. You're going to end up with a great big empty house because I can guarantee you that you're never going to get custody of my granddaughter.

Axel: Oh, Hayley. Hi.
Hayley: Axel.
Axel: I have been meaning to call you.
Hayley: How are you?
Axel: Oh, terrific. Have you seen me? I got a national commercial running. I play a kind of -- you're in trouble, aren't you? What's up?
Hayley: Ah, well, let's just say you'll find out. I got a lot to share before a drink starts looking really good.
Axel: Ok. Well, we were about to start.
Hayley: Great.
Axel: Ok. Don't forget -- god never gives us more than we can handle in one day.
Hayley: Yeah. Well, I think God and I disagree on quantity.

Axel: People, can we take our seats. Now, all right. Let's get started. Is there anyone here who feels close to a drink? Or is there anyone that has a topic they'd like to discuss?
Hayley: Excuse me. Hi. My name is Hayley, and I'm an alcoholic.
All: Hi, Hayley.
Hayley: A few days ago, everything was going great in my life, and then my mother blows in from out of town out of nowhere, and she's, like, this expert button-pusher. And then my dad gets in on the action, and he starts making all these demands on my loyalty, and I find myself in this familiar place again where a drink starts looking really, really good when I know that, you know, it's just this road to, like, a great big disaster.

Axel: Come on in. Welcome.
Arlene: Oh -- I -- I'm sorry I'm late. My name is Arlene. I'm from out of town, and I'm an alcoholic.
All: Hi, Arlene.
Axel: Go on.
Hayley: I'm finished.

David: Did Erica leave?
Edmund: I don't know. I'm looking for Alex.
David: She's not at home? She left a message with the office saying that she had some personal business to take care of.
Edmund: What kind of personal business?
David: I don't know. And frankly, considering Alex's recent behavior, the less I know about her, the better it is for my health.
Edmund: She must have left some kind of message, some idea, a number, when she'd be back?
David: Why don't you check with the nurses?
Edmund: I checked with the nurses.
David: You're really concerned, aren't you?
Edmund: Yes, I am.
David: Well, the way she nearly paralyzed me with one hand and disposed of that thug at the mall, I guess anything's possible. Maybe she ran off to become a lady wrestler. I hear they're very popular --
Edmund: Listen to me! If something happens to her, I'm holding you responsible.

Erica: Jack.
Jack: Well, Erica Kane. This is unexpected, to find yourself in a common joint like this.
Erica: Well, I've heard really good things about its breakfast menu.
Jack: Well, yes. That's why I'm here almost every morning.
Erica: Really?
Jack: Yes. The steak and eggs are quite good. Maybe you'd like some.
Erica: Well, maybe a little orange juice.
Jack: Ok, we can go that way, too. Good to see you.
Erica: Thank you.
Jack: I'd forgotten how your eyes sparkle in the morning. The brownest I've ever seen. Guess it's the way you hold your head so the light shines in them.
Erica: I do not. Come on, that's absurd. Of course I don't do that, Jack. Anyway, listen, I didn't come here to talk about my eyes.
Jack: Hmm. So what did you come here to talk about?
Erica: Oh, Jack, I just thought that you of all people in my life might be able to help me.
Jack: And of all the people in your life, why me?
Erica: Because not so long ago, you were in love with me.

Arlene: Like many of you, I have found truth the hard way. But I am proud to say that I have been sober for a whole year by taking it one day at a time, working the steps, sharing, like this. I'm happy and grateful for my life today. I am in pine valley to make amends. I have a lot of deep issues with my daughter, who resents me for a lot of mistakes that I've made, like sleeping with her husband on the day that they were married. I only knew one note on the scale then, and it was me, me, me, me. But I've learned how to take moral inventory, and I admit when I'm wrong now.

Mateo: Hey. You ok?
Hayley: She followed me here. I feel like I'm drowning.
Arlene: As we all know, peace of mind cannot be bought at the expense of others.

David: You know something, Edmund? It's a good thing you're the one manhandling me, not Alex, or else I'd be a goner.
Edmund: You want to joke about this, don't you? Alex is out there somewhere, god knows where.
David: That has nothing to do with me. I am not responsible for what Alex has done or what she will do.
Edmund: You have deliberately provoked her into some kind of breakdown.
David: I have been telling you for months that she is unfit to be running this foundation. Now she's proving me right, and I don't have to do a damn thing.
Edmund: Do you really think you'll get control of the Andrassy foundation, that I would allow that to happen?
David: Now who's paranoid?
Edmund: You know, when you found out that you reminded Alex of this man who triggers her bizarre behavior, you used it as a perfect weapon.
David: It's not my fault I remind her of someone.
Edmund: You've been using it. You've been unnerving her, humiliating her.
David: She's doing that all by herself.
Edmund: Do you want to know why you remind her of this man called Geoffrey?
David: I know better than the delve into her twisted psyche.
Edmund: Because you're as morally bankrupt as he was. You don't care who you hurt to get your way.
David: So you found out who this Geoffrey was.
Edmund: Oh, yeah. He's a child abuser and a murderer.

Jack: So Rae Cummings, the radio personality, is Myrtle Fargate's daughter?
Erica: I can hardly believe it myself.
Jack: Well, apparently they're happy to have found each other after all these years.
Erica: Jack, you're really missing the point of my story.
Jack: Which is what?
Erica: Which is that Myrtle and I have a long history together. We go way, way back. I mean, we're like mother and daughter. And now all of a sudden, Rae Cummings shows up and, poof, she has a real daughter and Myrtle doesn't need me anymore, I lose. And I went to see David. I tried to tell him about this, and he didn't have enough time for me. He had to go save a life. That's a very easy excuse to have to leave me, and so I lose again. And so I just thought that I really needed to see you. I really needed your perspective on this whole thing.
Jack: My perspective on what whole thing?
Erica: What is it about me, Jack? Why is it that everyone I love stops loving me?
Jack: Look, Erica, if you want me to tell you how unbelievably singular you are, how unique you are, I'll be happy to do that.
Erica: I want you to tell me the truth.
Jack: That is the truth. You're exciting, you are endlessly entertaining, and you know that. And any person who has Erica Kane in their lives has a very special, very precious gift -- for as long as it lasts.
Erica: That's exactly it, Jack. Why doesn't it last? Why? I mean, I'm nothing if not faithful. Loyal.
Jack: Better word.
Erica: I am nothing if not loyal. I hold nothing back from the people I care about. I give everything, and yet time and time again, I am cruelly and unexpectedly betrayed.
Jack: Erica, did you ever consider that maybe you expect too much from the people in your life?
Erica: What's wrong with that? I expect 150% because I give at least that much.
Jack: You really believe that?
Erica: Yes, I really believe that. It's true. You know it's true, Jack.
Jack: Erica, what you do is you allow people to bask in the brilliance that is Erica Kane. You allow them to be hypnotized by those flashing eyes. But when it's all said and done, somehow that just isn't enough.

Jake: Marian, it's painful for Gillian and me to be fighting with you and Liza. I'm sure you agree.
Marian: Oh, I quite agree. And I really think it's about time that you find out the truth, Jake.
Jake: Well, the truth is that Colby will be far away from Adam. That's the truth.
Marian: But suing for custody is not the way to get it. Jake: It is the only way. I feel strongly that I can convince the judge that I'm right.
Marian, this is what's right for your granddaughter. That's why I want this house.
Marian: Gillian --
Jake: She'll be safe and happy there.
Gillian: Marian, listen. We never wanted to take Colby away from you or Liza, but you and Stuart will be welcome in our home anytime.
Jake: And Liza, as soon as she comes to her senses. Now, can we please see the house?
Marian: I'll have to make arrangements. If not today, then tomorrow.
Jake: Ok, all right. If we have to wait till tomorrow --
Marian: And you'll have to give my company access to your financial records at your bank.
Jake: That's not a problem. I can get that number right now. Just hold on.

Marian: Gillian, you have to stop Jake from doing this, and you have to stop him right now!

David: Child-abusing murderer, huh? You make that kind of comparison in public, Edmund, and you'll find yourself being sued for slander.
Edmund: I don't have to make it public. You know what I think of you.
David: You've made me out to be the villain here. But you are looking in the wrong place.
Edmund: And where would you suggest I look?
David: Why don't you try inside Alex's head. There's something definitely wrong with that woman. When I knew her in med school, she was focused, she was self-assured, she was brilliant. What happened to Alex I leave for the experts on insanity.
Edmund: I'm not going to believe that.
David: Well, I don't care what you believe. If I were you, I wouldn't go looking for Alex. I'd run the other way.

Alex: You're not Dimitri. You're a completely different man.
Edmund: Yeah. That's right.
Edmund: Alex, I was -- are you all right?
Alex: Yeah.
Edmund: My timing is lousy. I'm sorry.
Alex: Well, I didn't stop you.

Edmund: I know where she is.

Gillian: I can't stop Jake from buying this house, and I don't want to. He's going to do whatever's best for him and Colby and what makes him happy.
Marian: For God's sake, Gillian, Colby's not his daughter.
Gillian: If you want to be the one to tell him that, then fine, go ahead. I will not do that, never.
Marian: Look, if the judge rules in his favor and he gets custody of Colby, Liza's going to be forced to tell him the truth, and if not Liza, Adam certainly will.
Gillian: I know that, but when I just think about Jake knowing the truth, it breaks my heart.
Marian: Well, what are we supposed to do?

Jake: Alfred Vanderpool himself is waiting for your call.
Marian: Oh. That was fast, wasn't it?
Jake: What's the problem? Marian: Oh, there's no problem at all. I was just telling Gillian that the second floor really needs a new bathroom desperately.
Jake: Thanks for the disclaimer, Marian, but we'll take care of it. Don't worry. You show us the house, we'll take care of the rest.
Marian: I'll do what I can.
Jake: All right. Thanks, Marian.
Marian: Not at all.

Jake: Colby's grandmother is selling us our dream house. It's not too weird for you, is it?
Gillian: No, I don't care. I just want what makes you and Colby happy and what's best for you.
Jake: I'm already pretty close.

[Telephone rings]

Jake: Soon this will all be behind us.

[Ring]

Jake: Jake Martin. Yeah. Ok. I'll be right there. Something's come up.
Gillian: What?
Jake: Probably nothing. Can I go to the folks' place and we'll all go over there together, all right?
Gillian: Sure.
Jake: All right.
Gillian: I'll meet you there.
Jake: Bye.
Gillian: Bye.

Mateo: Why are you torturing your daughter?
Arlene: "Torture"? What are you talking about? I thought she'd be pleased with the changes I've made in my life.
Mateo: You want to make her happy? Leave. Go back home.
Arlene: Honey, you know I can't do that. Janet and Amanda need me here.
Mateo: Not only do you come to town uninvited, you move into the same house. Now you're showing up at her AA. Meetings.
Arlene: Well, what do you want me to do, fall off the wagon? I need these meetings, too.
Mateo: Find your own meeting. There's plenty of meetings all over town. You're crowding her.
Arlene: Yeah, well, if you and Hayley would just listen to me --
Mateo: Listen -- you listen to me. You're not fooling anybody. All right? Stay away.

Hayley: What'd she say?
Mateo: Nothing. Everything's cool. Let's get to the hearing. Come on.
Hayley: No place is safe anymore.
Mateo: Let's go.

Erica: Well, I might have known that you would put that kind of spin on it. Of course, it's all my fault.
Jack: No, it's not your fault. It's just who you are. And anybody that loves you has to know that and accept it.
Erica: Jack, that's just not true. I hold nothing back, nothing back from the people I care about.
Jack: Well, I'll tell you what I think. I think you're going to patch things up with Myrtle because I think you need her very, very badly, and I think she's a woman who has enough love for six daughters. And as for Dr. David, you have to ask yourself, "is he the right man? Is he the man that's going to give me what I want?" And as for myself? I've got a court date. It was good to see you.
