ALL MY CHILDREN

MARCH 9, 2000

Rae: It really was some night. You know, when he held you at gunpoint, do you know I was scared to death for you?
Myrtle: You and me both.
Rae: Thank God you were all right, Mama. I mean, we just found each other. What?
Myrtle: I love to hear you call me that.
Rae: Well, I'm not going to lose you again, that's for sure.
Myrtle: Well, you are not going to lose me. And I am not going to lose you.
Rae: I have to tell you something. You faking that coronary was absolutely brilliant.
Myrtle: What about you knocking out the guy?
Rae: We're a pretty good team, aren't we?
Myrtle: We, listen, that's our Carny blood. I tell you something -- you and me, we can walk the high wire without a mat beneath, without any help. That comes naturally.
Rae: You know what? Maybe I should just be grateful that we found each other and just leave it at that.
Myrtle: Do you mean not to search for your daughter?
Rae: Maybe tonight was a sign. Maybe I'm not supposed to know what happened to her.
Myrtle: Well, if you believe that, you are no daughter of mine.

Edmund: We made it.
Alex: Yeah. It's good to be home.
Edmund: Is it? Home, I mean.
Alex: For now.
Edmund: Listen, I called ahead and had Stella make a fire in the hunting lodge, and she put out a little light supper for you.
Alex: All right. Well, then I'll say good night then.
Tad: Edmund? Oh. I'm -- I apologize. I -- I let myself in the back way. Listen, have you seen either of them?
Alex: What?
Edmund: Who?
Tad: What do you mean, who?
Jake, Gillian. We were hoping they'd be here. I just dropped Dixie off at home. She's trying to deal with Adam Jr. he feels awful about blasting Adam in court, even if his father is a rat bastard and --
Alex: What are you talking about?
Edmund: We just got back from England. What are you talking about?
Tad: Oh, my God. You don't know. Oh. Oh, then I -- I'm sorry. Forgive me. The custody hearing was today.
Alex: Did Jake and Gillian get Colby?
Tad: No. That's the thing. It's not settled yet. It looked like it was going to go our way, but then all hell broke loose. I wish I could give you the recap. I can't. I got to go find my brother. Edmund: No, no, no, no.
Tell us. Maybe we can help.
Tad: No, really, I got to go find Jake, you know? The damage has been done. Alex: If this concerns
Gillian, I want to know.
Edmund: Yeah, come on. Please tell us.
Tad: It's been the worst day of my life. I don't think Jake or Gillian will ever be the same.

Ryan: Gillian. You've been crying. What happened? Where's Jake? Oh, my God. He knows.

Jake: Just answer me one question -- was I the last to know? Was this yours and Gillian's guilty little secret? Did you and Tad conspire to keep me in the dark? Your mom probably knew something about this and Stuart and Winifred and the gardener, your hairdresser, your butcher. Did everybody know about this but me?
Liza: Jake --
Jake: How did you expect to keep this a secret? Was the whole town under this vow of silence? "Oh, there goes poor old clueless Jake Martin." Was everybody saying that behind my back?
Liza: I'm sorry. I know this is killing you.
Jake: You know, you -- you don't know! How could you know? Your life goes on.
Liza: And so will yours.
Jake: No! Colby was my life! She was the best part of my life. Wait a minute. No, she's not, see? She's not. That's a lie because she's not part of my life. You cut my heart out. How could you just let me live a lie? How could you let me live my life, my future -- I got married. I was going to plan a family. What kind of friend does something like that? What kind of person does something like that?
Liza: I -- I am your friend. You have to believe that. Why did you come here? What do you want from me?
Jake: What am I doing here? Colby belonged to me, Liza. She was -- now I -- I don't belong to anyone.
Liza: That's not true.
Jake: Our world was this beautiful place. I knew every corner. I knew everything from breakfast to bedtime. Colby was just -- that world doesn't exist anymore. I woke up. But I want to go back to sleep.
Liza: Oh, Jake. If I had the power, I --
Jake: You don't have it. What, to zap me back to the way things were? Back to my wonderful, beautiful, perfect love with Gillian? Back to my rock-solid relationship with my older brother that I looked up to, who watched out for me no matter what, who stood up for me? To you, my trusted friend? I'm scared because I -- it's all gone.
Liza: Gillian loves you Tad loves you. We're all so worried about you.
Jake: Oh, I had such dreams. She has a smile like my mother's. She has a laugh like Grandma Kate's. She was a Martin. She was every bit a Martin, but -- I do not know. I don't think she'll remember us, which is -- which is good.
Liza: Jake, you are her father. I want you to be her father. Dear God. If the judge gives me custody, I swear to you on my life Colby will remain your daughter.

Gillian: They make you swear to tell the truth in court. And that's what happened. The judge was ready to give Jake custody, and then Liza took the stand and she finally told the truth, what we've all been trying to hide from Jake. That precious child is not his.
Ryan: How did Jake take it?
Gillian: He didn't believe it at first. And then Adam showed the test proving that he's the father. Oh. And then the look on his face -- it was like somebody died. I'll never forget that.
Ryan: What did the judge say?
Gillian: She said she was going to review the testimony, and she adjourned the court, and we're all due back tomorrow.
Ryan: Well, whatever happens, Gillian, Jake has still got you.
Gillian: He doesn't want me. He doesn't want me after this. He feels I betrayed him, that I lied to him, and I did.
Ryan: It wasn't you, Gillian. This whole mess begins and ends with Adam Chandler. Jake has got to understand that.
Gillian: This is just so unfair, Ryan. Colby's with Adam. She's not a Martin anymore, and neither am I.
Ryan: Come on, Princess, don't talk crazy.
Gillian: He doesn't want me after this, Ryan.
Ryan: You got to make him understand that your heart was in the right place.
Gillian: In my heart, I wanted Jake and Colby to be together. They belong together. I wanted her to grow up in a normal house filled with love and laughter. I wanted Jake to be her daddy, to help her with her homework, to take her to the park. Can you see Adam do those things? Can you see him taking her to the park roller-skating? Teach her how to fly a kite? All he cares about is wrecking lives and making money. Money can't -- money can't tuck you into bed at night, read you a bedtime story. Money can't dry your tears when you're alone at night and you're crying yourself to sleep. It's no way for an innocent child to grow up.
Ryan: All you wanted was for Colby to live happily ever after, didn't you, Princess?

Myrtle: Rae, what are you afraid of?
Rae: Why do you think I'm afraid?
Myrtle: Well, you might find your daughter. And she might judge you. And you might not measure up. Or you might be scared that she doesn't think you're perfect and you have faults and failings like other people.
Rae: No. No, it really isn't that. Every single lead I get is a dead end. And I don't know, it's just so much time and energy wasted.
Myrtle: "Wasted," she says. Wasted? Now she tells me. Do think I should have sat all night here looking at the telly instead of wasting the time looking into the business end of a loaded revolver?
Rae: You're not mad at me, are you?
Myrtle: Don't you dare wimp out at me. Honey, you and me, we were smoking tonight. Listen, you said it yourself -- we're a hell of a team. We're a pair. Now, that means I've got a say, and I say that you look for your daughter, my granddaughter, and dead ends and shyster lawyers be damned.
Rae: I do love you. I do.
Myrtle: Yeah, I love you, too.
Rae: All right. You're absolutely right. We found each other, so anything is possible.
Myrtle: Yeah.
Rae: Yeah.
Myrtle: That's the way to talk.
Rae: Ok.
Myrtle: Now, I tell you what. Let's regroup over a pot of real strong tea.
Rae: Ok, good.
Myrtle: And I'll put the kettle on.
Rae: All right.
Myrtle: Oh, dear. Oh, darling, you got yourself a phone call when we were out.
Rae: Oh. From who?
Myrtle: Who is Bob Kosian?
Rae: That's the PI. I have him investigating Dr. Prendergast's desk.
Myrtle: Well, your PI., I think, has hit pay dirt.
Rae: He found the bible?
Myrtle: No, no, it doesn't say anything about the bible. It says that it was -- the desk was bought at an antique sale by an -- well, look, honey. By an antique dealer. Where? Where? I can't make it out.
Rae: An antique dealer in New Orleans.
Myrtle: New Orleans.
Rae: New Orleans.
Myrtle: Does the antique dealer have a number.
Rae: Right here. Yes, operator, I need a listing for New Orleans, Louisiana. Yes, a Reborn Antiques on Decatur Street. Yes, thank you. I think this is what we're looking for.
Myrtle: Bet that old doctor didn't think his desk would end up halfway across the country.
Rae: Just hope the bible is in it and my name is in that bible. Yes, operator, listen, before you connect me, could I have the number and the address? Yes. Thank you. Uh-huh. Yes, thank you. Thank you. Oh, I just hope that my name is there and who adopted my baby girl.
Myrtle: We'll soon find out.
Rae: Not answering. Damn. It's late.
Myrtle: Oh.
Rae: The shop is probably closed now.
Myrtle: Yes, well, ok, we'll try first thing tomorrow morning.
Rae: No, no, no. It may be too late. I can't wait for that what if he sells this desk before I can reach him?
Myrtle: Darling, we can't do anything tonight. The shop is closed.
Rae: You know what? We can do something. I can book a flight to New Orleans. I can go there. That's what I'm going to do. What am I doing? I can't leave now.

Alex: Adam is Colby's father. How is that possible?
Edmund: I thought Jake was the sperm donor.
Tad: No, no, no, no, no. That's what I'm trying to tell you. Adam bought the clinic. He switched his D.N.A. For Jake's.
Alex: That's why he didn't want Dimitri to use Colby's stem cells -- in case someone found out.
Tad: Probably.
Alex: Gillian knew all of this?
Tad: Get this -- Gillian found out about it the night of her automobile accident. She was on her way to tell Jake when it happened.
Edmund: You mean, Adam's secret almost killed her?
Alex: Oh, he's an awful man.
Tad: You have no idea. The list of casualties goes on and on and on.
Alex: You don't know where they are?
Tad: No, I have no idea. And that's what scares me. But then again, you know, I'm still in shock, so --
Edmund: So am I.
Tad: The worst part is none of us wanted to deceive Jake -- not Gillian, not me, and not Dixie. We just wanted to get through the custody hearing. We wanted to get custody of Colby away from Adam and then tell him. And I feel bad because before it all happened, I tried to persuade Jake to drop the suit, to make whatever arrangements with Liza he could to share custody of Colby. But he wouldn't hear of it. Because he didn't know what he had at risk. He didn't know what the stakes were walking into that courtroom because I didn't tell him. So he didn't blow it, Edmund, I did.
Edmund: Your intentions were good.
Tad: Yeah, well, we all know how the road to hell is paved, right?
Alex: No good comes of ever keeping secrets.
Edmund: Yeah, listen -- he got a bum deal. But he knows, or he will know in time, that you and Gillian, you had a rough choice.
Tad: Why should he have to?
Edmund, I let him down. I let him down big time.
Edmund: Yeah. Ok. But you'll survive because you're brothers.
Tad: I don't know. You should have seen his face, Edmund. I don't think he's going to forgive me.
Edmund: Well, then you underestimate him. Listen, Dimitri and I, we went through a lot. And the bond was still there, you know? I mean, it was death that finally, you know --
Tad: Yeah, but losing his daughter, I mean, I have no idea how that must feel.
Edmund: I do.
Alex: Tad, why don't we go and check with Stella and see whether Gillian left a message with her or your brother or --

Edmund: We know what Jake's feeling, don't we?

Jake: You really believe that after all this, I can still be Colby's father?
Liza: Yes.
Jake: How? I don't think so. I think you're kidding yourself. Or you're kidding me, or both of us.
Liza: No, no, Jake, you can be her father. You and I, we can work out a custody arrangement.
Jake: With Adam's stamp of approval? I don't think so.
Liza: Adam doesn't get a vote.
Jake: It doesn't matter. He's a tyrant. He grabs what he wants.
Liza: Not this time.
Jake: Why? What's changed? What is different now?
Liza: What is different now? Look what he did. He went too far.
Jake: You don't want to get between he and Colby. He will crush you.
Liza: I am not afraid.
Jake: Be afraid for her. He will destroy any chance she has to be happy, any chance to be herself. He's going to force her to be a Chandler.
Liza: I don't want him to force her to do anything. I will fight him with everything I have in me. Please help me. Help me fight him. I want him to hurt. Why? What are you looking at me -- why? What?
Jake: This is just a game. Is that what this -- I'm just a pawn you use against your husband?
Liza: No.
Jake: Yes, yes. That's exactly what it is. I -- count me out. Count me out because I -- I will not -- I despise being used. With everything else, used. And I won't be. I despise that more than I despise Adam himself, and you should be ashamed of yourself for bringing Colby into this.
Liza: Jake, please --
Jake: You're using her, too.
Liza: No.
Jake: You just said it. You just said it. You want to make him hurt. Every time I hold Colby, every time I call her my daughter, it hurts him. When I fell in love with my girl, it -- it tortured him. And you loved it. Admit it. You loved it. You wanted to use me as payback because you wanted to hurt him like he hurt you. Just admit it.
Liza: Yes. All right? Yes. Yes.
Liza: Look, it wasn't calculated and premeditated. You were Colby's father, and that's all we knew. And when Adam took that away from us, yes, I wanted to hurt him. And I still do because he stole something from you and from me. He took away my choices. He -- he forced his will on me. And I could love my child more than my own life and it's beside the point.
Jake: Then tell me the point. Liza: I didn't want a child with Adam. And it didn't matter what I wanted. And he thinks that the end result is somehow ok, it excuses this vile and despicable behavior of his -- that he cheated and he used me and deceived me, and then courted me and allowed me to believe he changed and had me fall in love with him. I didn't know how to really hurt him. I didn't forgive him. But, yeah, I did want to find that one place where I could -- I could get him where he was his most vulnerable, and that was with Colby. He couldn't play the proud father in public because you were her father. And you had that privilege, and it hurt him. But what really punished him is that you were a better father. And I wanted that to go on forever. Jake, when you pushed the custody hearing, everything started to unravel and I didn't know what to do. And I'm sorry. And that's no excuse. And I know that I hurt you as badly as Adam has hurt me. And I'm sorry.

[Colby cries]

Liza: Go. Colby needs you.

Gillian: Jake is going to hate me forever.
Ryan: Nobody could hate you, Princess.
Gillian: What I did was so horrible.
Ryan: Don't give up on him. Don't give up on each other.
Gillian: He's so angry at me.
Ryan: And he's probably going to stay angry for a while. The anger covers up the hurt. But just give him some time, Princess, because he's going to be able to figure this out on his own. And when he does, he's going to realize that you stood up to Adam Chandler and you risked your life for him and for Colby. And then he's going to stop and he's going to look at you and he's going to fall in love with you again because no man can look at you and not fall in love with you. So come on, let me take you somewhere. You don't want to be here right now.
Gillian: I want to go home. I want to go to Wildwind in case Jake needs me.
Ryan: Let's go.

Jake: Hey, what's your fussing about, huh? Huh? You have a scary dream? Huh? What's that look? Oh, yeah, there's Mommy. Oh.
Liza: Do babies have scary dreams?
Jake: Oh, it's called -- they're called night terrors, but I think she's a little too young for that.
Liza: Night terrors. I don't want her to have those. I don't want her to be afraid of anything.
Jake: It's all right. Maybe she's cutting the tooth. Those choppers poking through? They hurt, don't they? They hurt.
Liza: I don't want her to feel pain.
Jake: Pain is good sometimes. Hey. And even if I knew this day was coming and it would hurt this much, I wouldn't trade one second of my time with you because the first year of your life was the best year of my life. And I will always -- I will always love you.
Jake: Hey. Hey.
Liza: Hey, Pumpkin. Hi, Pumpkin. Yay. Yay. Hi, Pumpkin.

Maria's voice: No, Edmund! Edmund, no! Don't take my baby!

[Sam cries]

Edmund: Somebody is going to.
Maria: No.
Edmund: Someday, somebody will. A policeman.
Maria: No, they won't. Don't touch him. Don't --
Edmund: Someone will.
Maria: Touch him!
Edmund: Please. He's got to --
Maria: Get away! Leave us alone. Leave us alone.
Edmund: Please let me.
Maria: No. No, Edmund. No, no, no! My baby! My baby! My baby! Give me my baby! No! Edmund --
Edmund: Please, for all us.
Maria: Sammy. Look, we -- let's just get on the plane right now. Let's get on the plane. Let us get on the plane, and we'll -- and we'll go. Ok? And you can forget that this ever -- this ever happened. Sam?
Edmund: Come home. Please?

[Sam cries]

Maria: Sam! Sam! Mommy loves you. No!

Alex: Tad's gone home.
Alex: Thinking about Maria?
Edmund: What was that line you quoted, Alex? "The past is a foreign country."
Alex: Did you go back to an unhappy place?
Edmund: Yeah. Maria and I, we had to give up Sam for a while.
Alex: Oh, yeah. His birth mother wanted him back. Dimitri told me that.
Edmund: Yeah. Cheers. I know how Jake feels. He feels like he's falling down a bottomless pit and there's nothing to break the fall. You know, nothing prepares you for having to give up your child. Nothing. I mean, the pain is unimaginable.
Alex: I'm sorry.
Edmund: You think you're doing the right thing and you think it'll be easy, and it just tears your heart out.
Alex: But for you, you had a happy ending. I mean, Sam's upstairs now. He's warm and safe and loved.
Edmund: I hope Colby's as lucky.

Liza: Are you ready to go back to sleep? Hmm? You want to dream some sweet dreams? Huh? You want to get in the big bed? Oh, big bed. Yeah. You can sleep with me tonight if you want. Do you like this? You want to sing some songs? Yay. Daddy could -- Jake could sing you a song. Would you like that? Jake?

Rae: How can I go look for my daughter when I've just found my mother?
Myrtle: You're going to have to follow your heart.
Rae: But my heart is right here with you, Mama.
Myrtle: It's out there, too, looking for the other half.
Rae: But, you know, I have certain obligations here in Pine Valley. Alex Marick. She's very fragile right now. She really, really probably still needs me. And then there's Tad, his talk show. And I'm even working on a story about illegal adoptions.
Myrtle: Darling, you're living that story. Now, these people and all these problems -- they'll be waiting for you when you come back.
Rae: Want to come with me?
Myrtle: Oh.
Don't tempt me. Rae: Come on. It'll be such fun. It'll be Myrtle and Rae's excellent adventure. Come on. What do you say?
Myrtle: Well, what I say is that not since Santa invited me to come and stay at the North Pole have I had such a wonderful, wonderful invitation and so hard to turn down.
Rae: Well, then say yes and come with me.
Myrtle: No, darling. Darling, I can't. All my roots go very deep here, you know? And I can't go just gallivanting around the country. I've got a boutique to take care of and boarders to take care of.
Rae: It'll only be for a week or two.
Myrtle: Well -- no. I'll tell you what I'll do. I will keep a light on for you, and I will be here to welcome you when you come back. Now, time is a-wasting, and I'm going to come and help you pack.
Rae: Ok. But first, what's this about Santa and the north pole? Myrtle: Well, I'll tell you while we're packing.

Myrtle: Rae, darling, taxi's ready.
Rae: Thank you. You know I don't want to leave you. Myrtle: I'll be all right. Listen, we've got strong Carny blood in us.
Rae: You know what? I have always been a vagabond. Now I know why, don't I?
Myrtle: When you find your little girl, I hope she gives you as much joy as you give me.
Rae: Well, I hope that she has your red hair.
Myrtle: And your lovely smile.
Rae: Am I- well, am I what you imagined me to be?
Myrtle: More than a dream.
Rae: I'm going to call you as soon as I get to New Orleans. I'll keep you posted on my search, ok?
Myrtle: And then you'll come and visit --
Rae: Yes.
Myrtle: And bring your daughter and my granddaughter.
Rae: Yes. I have to, don't I? I mean, I have to hear all the rest of your stories and the places you've been.
Myrtle: Oh, that reminds me -- I wanted to take a photograph of the two of us before you go.
Rae: How are you going to do that? We don't have anyone to take it.
Myrtle: I'm going to set the timer. I'm going to set the timer. Rae: Ok, ok.
Myrtle: All right?
Rae: Yes.
Myrtle: Here we go.
Rae: Ok. Now -- ahem -- smile. Ok. You have to give me a picture of that, all right? Will you mail it to me?
Myrtle: Yes, I will. No your taxi's waiting.
Rae: Ok. Hey -- how would -- how would you say good-bye if you were still in the carnival?
Myrtle: We don't say good-bye in the Carny. We say, "see you at midway."
Rae: See you at midway, Mama.

[Car horn honks]

Myrtle: Ok.
Rae: Ok.
Myrtle: Ok. Enough's enough.
Rae: Ok.
Myrtle: Off you go.
Rae: Ok.
Rae: Ok.

Gillian: Did Jake come home?
Alex: No, darling. We heard what happened. I'm so sorry, sweetheart.
Gillian: We were so happy, and now Jake's gone, Colby's gone.
Alex: Here, take a sip. Let's go upstairs and we'll run you a bath, ok, and we'll talk. Hi, Ryan.
Ryan: Hi.

Edmund: Brandy?
Ryan: No, thanks. No. Just so you know, Edmund, we bumped into each other in the park. She was really upset, so --
Edmund: Ok. I appreciate you bringing her home.
Ryan: Well, say good night to her for me.
Edmund: Ryan? You knew, didn't you, about Colby's father? That's why you came to the wedding, and that's why you came here the night before.
Ryan: I just wanted to stop her from making a mistake, Edmund. Prevent her from going through what she's going through right now. But I guess I didn't do a very good job.
Edmund: You did what you could.
Ryan: It wasn't enough. Maybe you could tell me, Edmund. How do you protect somebody that you love? How do you keep them from getting hurt?
Edmund: Sometimes you can't.
Ryan: Well, take care of her for me, all right?

Liza: What you doing? Where are you going? Come back here, you. I promise you, sweetie, I am not going to let anyone keep Jake from loving you. Come back here. Come back here.

Bartender: What can I get you?
Jake: I'll just have a beer and a shot of tequila, please.
Bartender: You got it.
Tad: Jake? I tore up this entire town looking for you. Listen, I just spoke with Leslie Coulson. She wants to petition for a new hearing. Do you understand? You could still win custody of Colby if we can prove that Adam and Liza are unfit rents, and at this point -- if you're up for it, I'm behind you all the way. Jake, it's your call. What do you want to do? Jake. What are you going to --

[Jake walks away without talking to Tad]

On the next "All My Children" --

Alex: Edmund?
Edmund: Yeah?
Alex: I bought you a horse.

Liza: Harriet, what's wrong?
Harriet: Dr. Martin, Colby -- they're gone.
