Erica: I am told that
you don't want to see me?
Chris: You stay away from me.
Derek: You're under arrest
for trafficking in narcotics.
Mateo: Vanessa or David --
I really don't care.
I'm making Proteus pay for what
he did.
Jake: If Leo's with Vanessa,
there's no way I'm letting
you anywhere near that nut case
by yourself.
Vanessa: I love you.
Please don't make me hurt you.
TODAY'S - - - ALL MY CHILDREN
David: Why don't you make
yourself useful, Mateo, and call
a guard in here?
Mateo: Nope.
This is a private interview.
David: Hmm.
Mateo: Mm-hmm.
David: From what
I understand, that's not
allowed.
Mateo: Well, I'm a highly
motivated guy.
You understand that, right?
Anything's possible when you've
been pushed to the limit.
David: Yeah, I know what it's
like to be pushed to the limit.
That's exactly where I'm
at right now being dragged
in here.
Guard!
I want to talk to my attorney!
Mateo: He hears you.
He doesn't care.
David: Do they know you're
in here with me right now?
Mateo: Mm-hmm, yep.
Yep, they do.
They tend to look the other way
for certain people, Proteus.
David: "Proteus," huh?
If that's supposed to be
a threat, it's a pretty
lame one.
Mateo: You feel safe behind
here?
You know, I got knifed when
I was in prison.
But then again, you do know that
because you ordered the hit.
David: Yeah, you're right,
Mateo.
I have connections, but not
the way you're talking about.
I have friends in high places
and I know my rights.
Mateo: Nobody gives a damn
about your rights.
David: Well, they will when
I sue.
Mateo: You think you'll be
around for that long?
David: And what is that
supposed to mean?
What, are you packing heat?
Mateo: Make no mistake,
you will pay for what you did
to me and my family.
David: Try to get this
through your thick skull,
Mateo -- I am not Proteus,
all right?
I was set up.
Those files on my computer were
planted there.
Mateo: So how come you were
trying to get rid of them when
the cops were banging
on your door, huh?
David: Look, I know we don't
like each other, but I always
gave you some credit
for intelligence.
You're smarter than this.
Mateo: I am what you made me,
and you did a good enough job.
I actually enjoyed the power
that you gave me.
David: I didn't have any
power to give you, Mateo,
unless of course you wanted
to be a candy striper
at the hospital.
Mateo: So you're not Proteus?
David: Finally -- no,
I'm not.
Mateo: So what you're saying
is that the position is open,
right?
Cool.
I'll take it.
Yeah, I'll call the shots.
You know what I'd do?
I'd snatch you out of water
and make you flop around like
a fish fighting for its life.
That's what I'd do.
Yeah, lately I've been thinking
about what it's like to do that
to someone --
you know, torture a guy,
make him feel the fear burn
in his gut,
the fear that I could take
his life at any moment,
make him afraid for his very
soul.
Anna: Please just put
the paperwork down and think for a minute.
Chris: Devane, I am never
going to see Hayward through
your eyes because I never shared
a pillow with him.
Anna: David is not Proteus.
Chris: Is this putting
you in a bad light, Devane?
Tough.
Anna: This is not about
my career.
It's about the truth.
Chris: Exactly.
Anna: You've made a bad
arrest.
You know it.
Chris: Give it.
Not according to my gut
and my evidence.
Anna: I'm sorry you got shot.
I couldn't be sorrier.
But don't you believe
in justice?
Chris: Are you going
to leave, or do I have to find
someone to assist you?
Anna: I know you feel
powerless.
Chris: You have no idea how
I feel!
Anna: Yeah, if I was in this
hospital, I'd want to tear it
down brick by brick, but I hope
to hell that I wouldn't abuse
my position and use it
for revenge.
Chris: Yes, well, you keep
this up.
You keep it up and you're going
to join him as an accomplice.
Anna: You know, I'm all
for bending the rules,
Chris, but this stinks.
And your -- your self-pity party
is nauseating.
[Erica enters the hospital room]
Erica: Have you lost
your mind?
How dare you talk to Chris like
that.
[At the boat house]
[Gunshot]
Greenlee: Aah! Leo!
Jake: Greenlee, hey --
Greenlee, no!
Leo: You guys shouldn't be
here.
Greenlee: Who's shot?
Leo: It hit the ceiling.
Greenlee: I thought you --
you're all right.
Jake: All right.
All right, listen.
Leo, just put the gun down,
please.
Leo: Back off, White Knight.
Greenlee: Why'd you fire that
thing?
Leo: It was a mistake after
I wrestled it from my own
mother.
Greenlee: Thank God
you're ok.
Leo: So, what, are guys --
are the police waiting
for a signal from you guys
or something?
Jake: No, no, no.
We came alone.
Greenlee: We wouldn't file
charges without you.
I had to find you.
Vanessa: Oh, how very
touching.
Leo: Shut up.
Jake: All right,
listen, the police are already
looking for her.
They've got the word out
on her already.
Greenlee: It seems we're not
the only ones on her victim
list.
Leo: Yeah, well,
on the brighter side, it turns
out my mother's got a soft,
fuzzy side.
Greenlee: Where?
Under the scales?
Leo: No, seriously.
She had this thing pointed right
at me and didn't pull
the trigger, so I guess
you don't have it in you to kill
your own flesh and blood.
Right, Mother?
Greenlee: That's not entirely
true, Leo.
Leo: What are you talking
about?
Greenlee: Looks like Vanessa
killed more than ex-lovers.
She shot her own niece.
Your mom murdered Frankie.
Anna: Ugh.
Well, I guess the cavalry's been
downsized.
Erica: Chris does not need
you screaming at him like this.
Please leave.
Anna: You know, Erica,
I could snap you in two
without breaking a sweat,
so don't --
Erica: Oh, I'm so impressed.
Why don't you just stop
by the psychiatric ward
on your way out?
Chris: Why don't you both
stop by?
Erica: Don't worry.
She's going to be gone
in a minute.
Look, your -- your venom is
toxic.
Chris does not need that.
Anna: He just had David
arrested and charged with drug
trafficking, ok?
Erica: David?
David saved your life.
Chris, you wouldn't have lived
long enough to get to
the hospital.
Chris: He also made sure
I would never walk out of here.
Erica: Who are you calling?
Chris: Stamp here.
I need an agent sent up
to my room.
I need a couple of things
removed.
Anna: Please, please -- call
the station, tell them that
you made a mistake about David.
We both know the evidence points
to someone else.
Erica: So you are just
as deeply involved with David
as I had heard.
Doesn't that make your judgment
just a little bit suspect?
Anna: Go away.
Erica: Why don't you run down
right now.
You should run down right now
to the police station
and you really should have
yourself recused.
Anna: You know, you are
working my last nerve.
Erica: Well, fine.
Then let's settle this outside.
Let's -- please, let's spare
Chris all of this.
Anna: I'm not done.
Chris: Great.
And don't come back.
[Erica and Anna leave the room]
Anna: So much for loyalty,
Erica.
You don't seem to care that
he is railroading your ex.
Anna: But then, of course,
Chris is sabotaging his own
career as well as David's --
Erica: I don't want that.
Anna: Because when the truth
comes out about Proteus,
Chris is going down in flames
because David is not the head
of a drug ring.
Erica: Which is why I am
trying to get through to you.
Anna: Why am I talking
to you?
You don't care.
You just want oranges and mixed
nuts or whatever.
Erica: Are you done?
Anna: No, I'm not.
You know, I'm not.
Erica: Well, then, just shut
up and listen.
Anna: What?
Erica: Because I happen
to agree with you, Anna, ok?
How does that grab you?
David: If you or anybody
you hire hurts me --
Mateo: "When."
It's when I hurt you.
David: You will do jail time,
Mateo.
I promise you.
Mateo: Do you think anybody
gives a damn about you?
Huh?
David: You do know that I'm
going to report this to --
Mateo: Oh, come on,
the cops -- the cops would
consider it a community service
if someone offs you.
David: Mateo, I'm innocent.
Mateo: I better step back
before the lightning strikes.
Did you get some perverse
pleasure out of torturing me?
David: I didn't torture you!
Mateo: Do you enjoy watching
people's lives turn upside down?
Does that amuse you?
David: Look, I know you think
that I'm Proteus, but I'm
not, ok?
Mateo: Uh-huh.
I don't expect you to admit it.
I don't.
I don't expect you to admit it.
I'll just let the evidence speak
for itself.
David: I was set up.
Mateo: Right.
By who? Your crazy old mother?
She set you up?
She planted that stuff
in your computer?
She did the syringe?
She killed those people?
David: It had to be her.
Mateo: No, no.
You just want it to look
that way.
David: No, no!
Actually, I didn't want
to see it.
I refused to see it.
I mean, Vanessa's so needy --
Mateo: Right, uh-huh.
David: She's so clingy and --
Mateo: And you took advantage
of that, didn't you?
[Mateo grabs David, around the next, through the jail cell bars]
David: No!
Look -- look, do you honestly
think that I'd want to work
with her, that I trust her?
Mateo: What, I'm supposed
to trust you, the man who
drugged the whole town?
Do you know how many lives
you ruined?
Huh?
You've been on a power trip
since you landed in pine valley.
David: No, Anna has been
warning me!
She saw right through
Vanessa's act!
Mateo: Yeah, and you didn't
see it?
[Hayley arrives]
Hayley: Vanessa?
Mateo, let go of him!
Let go.
He said Vanessa's Proteus!
Mateo: No, he's getting
to that point.
Hayley: No, Mateo.
Listen, think about me.
That's his mother.
When I look at Arlene,
I see everything but the truth.
Let go of him!
Mateo: It's different.
It's different.
Hayley: Mateo, it's not
different.
It's exactly the same.
Please let go of him.
David: It's been her all
along, even when I was a kid,
probably.
Anna was right.
It's Vanessa, Vanessa all along.
Vanessa is Proteus!
Hayley: Mateo, please,
I believe him.
Greenlee: Larry and Paolo
I can understand, and she's
jealous of our relationship.
But Frankie?
No.
Frankie's just a kid.
Vanessa: Leo, this wench is
just trying to make more trouble
for me again.
Leo: Did you do to Frankie
what you couldn't do to me?
Did you pull the trigger?
Vanessa: I most certainly did
not murder that poor girl.
Leo: Erica and Bianca
suffered through that trauma.
I'm not sure Bianca's ever going
to get over that.
Vanessa: And that's very
regrettable.
But I am not at fault for any
of that, I swear.
Jake: Where's Frankie's
sister?
Greenlee: Maggie's missing.
What did you do with her?
Vanessa: Well, nothing.
That would be --
Greenlee: Did you inject
your magic serum?
Jake: Did you give
her a nice, tidy heart attack,
Vanessa?
Vanessa: You know something?
You are as ill-mannered as Mary
Margaret was, so you just be
careful, Doctor.
Leo: Whoa, "was"?
Wait, wait, did you -- "was"?
Did you kill Frankie and Maggie?
Vanessa: I did no such thing.
Greenlee: Sure, she didn't.
She doesn't have to chip a nail
when all it takes is a phone
call to a henchman and,
poof, somebody gets stuffed.
Vanessa: "Stuffed,
stuffed, stuffed" -- you know,
you really have to stop watching
those stupid mob movies, Dear.
Leo: Mother?
Is Maggie dead?
Vanessa: Leo, let me tell
you, this girl is so filled
with venom --
Greenlee: Better than what
you're filled with, Vanessa.
Vanessa: No, all she's ever
done is lie to you and cheat
you with this boring dolt.
Leo: Shut up!
Vanessa: No --
Leo: Shut the hell up
and answer me!
Vanessa: Believe me --
Leo: No, I'm not --
believe you?
Believe -- I've believed
you my whole life, but you are
not going to talk your way out
of this!
Vanessa: All right, Darling.
All right, just let me --
I will explain everything
to you, but not -- not in front
of them.
No, no, no, no, no.
Let's go somewhere private,
ok, where we can get some peace
and quiet.
Greenlee: Peace and quiet
just like Maggie?
Vanessa: Oh, my God.
I can't think with you harping
in the background.
Can we please just get rid
of them?
Jake: No, you already tried
that, Vanessa, and you failed.
Vanessa: Darling, you know
what it is?
They do not understand us.
They have no idea what we've
been through, what we have
overcome.
And you know what?
Like the song says, "I'm still
here," and it's thanks
to you, Leo.
Oh, God, you and I were
an unbeatable team.
You know, we can beat this, too.
We can.
Leo: There is no more "we"
with us anymore, Mother.
Vanessa: Darling -- Darling,
now, I love you.
Leo: No, no, no, I'm through.
I'm through.
Call the police.
I can't even stand the sight
of her anymore.
Vanessa: You --
[Motorboat approaches]
Greenlee: Maybe that's
the police.
Vanessa: Whew.
Wrong again, Dear.
That's my ride.
[A man jumps out of the boat and stands by Vanessa - pointing a gun at Jake, Leo and Greenlee]
Erica: Anna you agree with me?
Erica: I simply agree that
Chris cannot get past his fury,
past his depression.
Anna: Well, go in there
and tell him that.
Erica: Because the full
frontal assault worked so well
for you?
Anna: No.
Not as well as I thought, no.
Erica: No, I do not intend
to bully Chris.
I frankly find his male pride
rather charming.
Anna: Do you?
Yeah, well, I don't.
I find him stubborn and --
and destructive and maddening.
Erica: No, he is building
a wall around himself,
but I understand why.
Anna: Go in there and knock
it down, Erica.
Erica: I can't do that.
Chris would only build it
higher.
I -- look, I have to do this
his way, which is where
you come in.
Anna: Me?
Erica: You want to clear
David, don't you?
Anna, this was not a social
call.
Anna: Oh.
Fruit basket is cover,
then, huh?
Erica: I have contacted
a specialist to come
in and examine Chris' spine
and his legs.
Anna: Does he know?
Erica: No.
He would never agree if he knew,
which is why it's so very
important that Chris believes
that Dr. Stannart was sent
by the FBI.
Anna: Well, you don't think that Chris would stand
in the way of his own recovery,
do you?
Erica: It's not a risk I'm
willing to take.
Are you?
Anna: Oh.
Erica: Look, the sooner that
Chris believes that he can
really get well, the sooner he's
going to stop blaming David.
Anna: Yeah, maybe.
Erica: Dr. Stannart can prove
that David didn't cause Chris'
temporary paralysis.
Anna: Oh, Erica,
you're assuming an awful lot.
Erica: I'm assuming that
you are sincerely -- well,
you sincerely care for David.
Anna: Yeah.
Yeah, I do.
What would happen if this
paralysis isn't temporary?
What then?
Erica: I can deal
with anything where Chris is
concerned.
But I will not give up on him.
And I will make sure that
he does not give up on himself.
Anna: That's nice.
It's never just 50% with you,
is it?
Erica: Look, compared
to standing trial for murder,
this little conspiracy
with you is a piece of cake.
Are you in?
Anna: Oh, I'm in.
Hayley: My God, Mateo.
Don't you believe him?
[David coughs]
Mateo: Yeah.
Just wanted to make sure it
wasn't an act.
David: Your faith in me is
reassuring.
Hayley: You could've
killed him!
Mateo: No, it's Proteus
I want to kill.
It was just a test.
Hayley: Oh, what good would
that have done anybody?
Mateo: Listen, it was
for myself, ok?
I did it for me.
The cops never would've let me
shake him up like that.
They'd have been all over me.
David: Oh, that's great.
I'm glad I passed.
Now can you get a cop in here
so I can make a phone call?
Mateo: No, we don't want
to alert Vanessa.
David: I'm not going to call
Vanessa.
Hayley: Vanessa -- we don't
know who her connections are.
Please.
Mateo: Yeah.
If someone calls her and tips
her off, she's gone.
Hayley: Look, Stamp doesn't
know what we know.
He doesn't know that Vanessa is
Proteus.
Now, we've got to get to him
and convince him this before
she turns up in Venezuela
or wherever it is she's headed.
Mateo: Yeah.
And if she set up her son
to take the fall --
Hayley: She's capable
of doing anything to anybody.
Do you understand that?
Mateo: We're wasting our time
here.
Let's go.
[David talks to himself]
David: Oh, Vanessa.
If you drove my father
to suicide to keep your drug
business going, you better pray
that I don't get out of here.
Vanessa: Leo, you --
you seemed so upset
on the phone, I decided I needed
a little backup plan.
Plan B, this is my son Leo,
and the other two don't matter.
Man: Is he coming along?
Vanessa: I hoped so,
but alas, no.
Leo: What, is he
your hit man?
Man: If I have to be.
Vanessa: Well, let's hope
that's not necessary.
Leo: Who are you?
What are you?
Vanessa: Darling,
I am your mother.
I'm the woman that gave
you birth.
And I love you more than
anything else in the whole wide
world, and please don't forget
that.
Leo: Jake, Greenlee, get out
of here.
Go. Go.
Jake: He's right, Greenlee.
Let's go.
Vanessa: No, no, no.
I really suggest you don't.
You know, I wouldn't want any
fatal accidents happening here,
and my plan B here has quite
an itchy trigger finger.
However, I must really go.
Leo: Mother, stop.
Vanessa: Darling, you don't
want your mummy rotting
in prison, do you?
Leo: Actually, this time
I think it might be
for the best.
Tell him to put it down.
Put it down.
My whole life I've helped
you to get out of town,
escape from what was coming
to you.
Not this time.
Vanessa: I never meant
to cause you pain, Darling.
Don't hurt me now.
Leo: You are not walking out
on this this time.
Put the gun down.
Put it down.
Vanessa: Poor baby, you are
trembling.
You can't shoot me any more than
I could shoot you.
Greenlee: Give me the gun.
I'll take her out.
Vanessa: Oh, you shut up.
You're nothing but a human
ping-pong ball bouncing
between men.
Greenlee: Go on, Leo.
You can do it.
Vanessa: Oh, I should have
squashed you when I had
the chance.
Leo: Shut up!
Tell him to put the gun down.
Vanessa: Leo, you put the gun
down.
You've never fired a gun.
Darling, put -- put down.
You could kill me.
Greenlee: Isn't that
the idea?
Leo: No. No.
You know this isn't what I want.
This isn't what -- tell him
to put it down.
Vanessa: Leo -- Leo,
of course I know that.
I understand that.
I mean, we've shared so much,
Darling.
We've had only each other
to depend on and to love.
That's exactly why I know
Greenlee is -- was wrong
for you, Darling.
She was trying to build wedges
between us, control you --
Greenlee: That is such
a crock.
Vanessa: Darling, come on.
You can't kill me.
We shared a life together-- Leo,
I know you better than any
person in the whole wide world.
Vanessa: You go to the car.
Go.
Leo: No, no.
Stop.
Leo: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
I told you, you're staying.
Vanessa: Oh, Leo.
Please, come on.
You know that free spirits like
me just don't do well in prison.
So if you want me to go
in there, you're going to have
to use that thing.
Oh, Leo, Leo.
Seems like my life is
in your hands.
[Everyone starts to struggle for the gun - Vanessa and the man make their getaway]
Jake: No! No!
Leo: Let go of me!
Jake: Lay down!
Leo: Let go!
Jake: Lay down, Leo!
[Tires screech]
Greenlee: They're getting
away!
Leo: What the hell are
you thinking?
Jake: I'm trying to save
the rest of your life, Leo.
[A frustrated Chris, alone in his hospital room, glares at his legs and yells]
Chris: Move!
Simone: Hi.
Zeke: Hey, am I that scary?
Simone: No.
Zeke: So, what brings
you to my salt mine?
Simone: I screwed up.
Zeke: Can't be that bad.
Simone: Oh, yes, it can.
Zeke: Want to tell me
about it?
Simone: It's too late.
Zeke: No fair coming to me
when it's too late.
Now, tell me what's going
on so we can see if we can get
something positive out of this.
Simone: Are you shrinking me?
Zeke: You want me to?
Simone: I don't think so.
Mateo: Don't get too
close, Doc.
It might get you shot.
Greenlee: Did I tell you how
much I'm starting to hate this
place?
Leo: Well, you and me both.
Jake: Vanessa got away.
Greenlee: Should we get rid
of that gun?
Leo: No.
Jake: What, you going to use
it against me?
Greenlee: Are the police
on their way?
Leo: Yeah, and I hope
they bring him in as
an accomplice.
Jake: Look, Leo, they could
be carting your mother's body
off in a body bag right now.
Leo: I was only going
to wound her.
Jake: Yeah, yeah,
great theory.
How many marksmanship trophies
do you have again?
Leo: It wasn't your business,
Jake.
Jake: It is my business.
Vanessa tried to kill Greenlee
and me.
I want her locked up more than
you do.
Leo: Really?
You've sure got a weird way
of showing it by letting
her escape.
Jake: Listen, why don't
you just leave the gunplay
to the police.
They're going to find her.
Leo: And what if they don't?
Jake: You know what?
Don't even try to tell me that
you were going to wound her.
All right, I've seen what guns
can do.
Babies' bodies that are blown
apart from a shot fired a block
away, guns that just blew apart
for no reason, taking kids'
hands off.
Don't even begin to tell me that
you were going to wound
her, Leo.
[Siren]
Leo: Yeah, well, this wasn't
the day to play hero, ok?
Jake: What, you want to just
let me -- want me just to go
ahead and let me shoot
your mother?
Is that it?
And your life would have been
a whole big bowl of cherries,
Leo, if your mother ended up
in a morgue today.
I didn't do it to save Vanessa.
Greenlee: He did it
to save you.
Mateo: What, you don't want
to hear it?
Simone: Quit following me.
Mateo: You get the guy shot
and you show up at his hospital
room?
What, are you nuts?
Zeke: Let her go.
And you might want to apologize
for what you said.
Simone: It's ok, really.
Everything that Mateo's saying
is the truth.
Zeke: Somehow I doubt that.
Hayley: And who are
you to doubt anything?
Simone: This is Dr. Zeke
McMillan.
Zeke: I'm Simone's dad.
I have a question for you --
what makes you feel entitled
to make these allegations
against my daughter?
Simone: Dad.
This is Mateo Santos
and his wife, Hayley.
This is the couple that I was
working with undercover on that
story I couldn't tell you about.
Look, if I would have dreamed
that Chris was shot or --
Mateo: What, it'd have been
better if Ryan was shot?
Simone: No, that's not what
I'm saying.
I didn't want anyone to get
shot.
Haven't you ever made a mistake?
Mateo: Yeah.
When I worked with you.
You coming?
Hayley: In a minute.
Simone: I could not be
sorrier, Hayley.
Hayley: You know,
I can handle you falling
for Mateo and everything.
He's irresistible.
I get that.
But nearly getting Chris killed?
I can't forgive that.
Zeke: Simone and Mateo's
romance was an act.
Tell her.
[Hayley laughs]
Hayley: Yeah, we already
discussed that, didn't we?
Turns out your daughter's quite
the method actress.
I suggest you get another job.
Simone: Go ahead.
Ask. I know you want to.
Zeke: I figure you'll tell me
when you feel like it.
Simone: Ok, fine.
I let things go too far
with Mateo.
I mean, I got emotionally
attached --
Zeke: Ok.
Simone: But that's all.
I mean, we didn't do anything
else.
Zeke: All right.
Simone: I mean, it never even
got that --
Zeke: Simone --
Simone: I hate that.
Zeke: What, that he wasn't
interested?
Simone: No, I hate when
I disappoint you so badly
and you just stand there all
shrink-like.
Zeke: Is that what I'm doing?
Simone: Yes!
Stop it!
Zeke: I assume that this is
why you have been avoiding me.
Simone: Well, getting
involved with a married man is
not something you want to go
home to daddy about.
Zeke: Putting a man's life
in danger isn't a conversation
starter, either.
And what about losing your job?
Simone: Oh, you know about
that, too?
Zeke: What are you doing
for money, Simone?
Simone: Edmund's letting me
freelance for "Tempo."
Zeke: But you have nothing
steady?
Simone: My reputation kind
of took a serious dive.
I'm kind of in that position
of starting over.
Don't look at me like that.
You know, this whole situation
is really hard.
Zeke: Listen, I -- I wish
that I could put a band-aid
on it, buy you -- buy
you a lemon ice, make everything
better.
Simone: I wish you
could, too.
Zeke: I think you can.
Simone: How?
Zeke: Try to make amends when
you find an opportunity,
I guess.
Simone: Yeah, well,
it doesn't look like I'm going
to get that opportunity anytime
soon.
Zeke: Simone, stay open.
Simone: Oh, isn't that how
I got into this trouble?
Being open?
Zeke: Ok, but you played it
that way.
Simone: Can we please just
drop the whole conversation
about being balanced?
I mean, I'm struggling just
to get out of bed in
the morning.
Zeke: You want to stay
with me for a few weeks?
Simone: With you?
So I can get analyzed on a daily
basis?
Zeke: Simone --
Simone: Thanks, but
no thanks.
Zeke: Simone, listen,
you screwed up, ok?
Simone: Yeah, I know!
Zeke: You screwed up.
Now you're going to take it out
on the people who love you?
Simone: No, I think I'll just
stick by myself for a while.
Zeke: I have some patients
to see.
Simone: Yeah?
You going to judge them, too?
Zeke: If they're being
destructive, yes.
Call me.
[Knock on door]
Chris: Go away.
Erica: Relax.
That horrible Devane woman is
long gone.
Chris: Why didn't you go
with her?
Erica: Will you stop being
so grumpy?
I just spoke with Joe Martin,
and we are arranging special
visitation rules.
Chris: No visitors.
Erica: Hey --
you haven't touched any of this
fruit.
Chris: That's because I'm not
hungry.
Erica: Well, I got
you something very special.
Look what I have for you.
I brought you
a chocolate-covered --
Chris: Erica, Erica, please.
I don't want you running
interference for me
with visitors or with
the hospital, and I sure as hell
don't need you feeding me right
now, ok?
Erica: Ok.
I mean, for heaven's sakes,
if you're not hungry,
just say so.
Chris: I just did.
I just did, Erica.
Now, why don't you take that
fruit and go away?
Erica: Ok.
I'll go, and I will -- I'll
leave you alone.
I'll leave you some time
to think.
But I'll be back tomorrow.
Chris: Don't.
Erica: What?
Chris: Don't.
Look, I don't need you coming
around here, hanging around,
and feeling sorry for me.
Erica: Chris, that is not
what I'm here for.
Chris: And I don't need
your pity, please.
Man: Agent Stamp, I'm Bill
Stannart.
Chris: Dr. Stannart.
Anna Devane told me they were
going to be sending you by.
Erica?
Erica: Yes, excuse me,
Dr. Stannart.
I was just on my way out.
Well, I hope you'll change
your mind, Chris.
I hope that you'll be in touch
soon.
Chris: Ok, what's
the drill, Doc?
Dr. Stannart: Well,
the FBI didn't have copies
of your records, so I'll need
to review those first.
Chris: Right.
Dr. Stannart: Then,
in the morning, I'll do
a thorough workup and run some
tests if you're feeling up
to it.
Chris: I'm feeling up to it
right now.
Look, I'll crawl across a mile
of glass, whatever you want me
to do.
You just get me up so I can walk
out of here.
Jake: Vanessa's accomplice
held a gun on us.
She left her car behind,
they took off in a black
Town Car.
Did you get a plate number?
Greenlee: Sorry.
Leo: It wasn't hers.
I mean, the car they took off
in wasn't hers.
Derek: As far as you knew.
But there was a lot about
Vanessa Cortlandt that nobody
knew.
Leo: Yeah.
Jake: So is that it?
Derek: Jake, I don't
understand.
How come you didn't stick around
the station and report Vanessa
drugging you?
I mean, a double murder is not
that big of a deal to you?
Jake: Well, we -- we just
wanted to file this report
together.
Greenlee: Jake, Leo,
and I -- it involved all of us.
[Phone rings]
Derek: Excuse me.
Yeah, this is Frye.
Are you sure it was
Mrs. Cortlandt's car?
Leo: Did they get the --
Derek: Well, how bad?
Leo: What -- what's going on?
Is it my mother?
Did they find her?
Derek: Leo --
[Leo takes the cell phone from Derek]
Leo: It's ok.
Yeah, what's going on
with Vanessa Cortlandt?
No, it's ok, it's ok.
Officer Frye is right here.
So what's going on?
Oh.
Leo: Oh, my God.
Leo: Yeah -- uh,
yeah, I'm still here.
[Derek takes the phone back from a stunned Leo]
Derek: Yeah, this is Frye.
Have you secured the area?
Greenlee: Leo, what is it?
What's going on?
What happened?
Leo: Uh, she's gone.
Greenlee: She really got
away?
She got on a plane or something?
Leo: Uh, no, her car -- it
went off the road and down --
down an embankment, and
ex-- exploded.
Anna: Oh, hi.
Well, if Stamp wasn't already
in the hospital, I'd put him
there myself, you know?
He's not listening to reason.
He doesn't seem to care about
professional ethics
or his future with the FBI.
He doesn't care.
David: The man can't walk,
Anna.
That's his focus right now.
Anna: Yeah, I know.
I know.
But he should wake the hell up
where you're concerned.
David: Yeah, well, I've had
to do that myself over the last
hour.
Anna: What do you mean?
David: My mother's guilty.
I can't deny it any longer.
Anna: Oh, finally.
David: Mateo was here.
He was mouthing off about
Proteus.
And it just -- it all came
together, you know,
everything that you've been
saying.
Anna: I'm sorry, David.
It's true.
David: I mean, who knows how
many people she's killed?
And when you factor in all
the lives ruined by her drug
trafficking --
Anna: Are you ok?
David: I just want to find
Maggie.
Have you heard anything?
Anna: No, nothing.
David: I'm telling you,
Anna, if Vanessa killed Maggie,
I swear --
[Phone rings]
Anna: Sorry.
Hi. Anna.
Yeah, ok.
Yeah.
It's your mother.
There's been an accident.
Chris: Now, get back to me
as soon as you have a complete
report, ok?
Mateo: Stamp, listen, you got
the wrong suspect in custody.
Hayley: Mateo did some
private detecting.
Mateo: Hayward wasn't faking.
He's not Proteus.
Hayley: It's Vanessa.
Mateo: It's definitely
Vanessa.
Hayley: Even Hayward's
accepted it.
Mateo: You've got to put
an APB out on her.
Chris: No, I don't.
Hayley: Oh --
Mateo: Stamp, you don't
understand.
Hayward is not Proteus.
Hayley: She's out there
on the loose.
Chris: They found Vanessa.
Hayley: Where?
Chris: That was Frye.
One of his patrol cars was
in a high-pursuit chase
with another vehicle.
In that vehicle, Vanessa was
a passenger.
One of her guys was driving
the car.
It went off the road, went down
the ravine, exploded on impact.
Hayley: Vanessa's dead?
Chris: One way or another,
it's over.
Mateo: It -- it's over?
Chris: Yep.
Hayley: It's over.
[Hayley and Mateo hug each other]
Greenlee: What can I say
to him?
Jake: He's on emotional
overload.
Greenlee: I can't exactly
sympathize about Vanessa.
I feel like the flying
monkeys -- "Ding-dong, the witch
is dead."
Derek: Leo --
Leo: Uh, I don't really have
anything else I can tell you.
Derek: Yeah, I --
I just got off the phone
with one of my officers.
He's at the accident site now.
Leo: Tell me.
Derek: Well, the fire is
still burning and the ravine's
not an easy access, and --
well, none of my people have
been able to get to
the vehicle yet.
Leo: I want to go there.
Derek: I understand, Leo.
I understand, but just listen
to me.
There was no movement
in the vehicle or the
surrounding areas.
They don't -- they don't think
that anybody could have
survived.
Leo: Ok.
Derek: Ok.
Greenlee: Is there anything
I can do?
[Thick trees and bushes - small amount of smoke - an unconscious Vanessa, with blood running down her face,
suddenly opens her eyes}
ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN
Derek: We have to find
anybody who had contact
with your mother in the past few
days.
Stuart: Maybe we can help.
Leo: I wish that I wasn't
sorry that my mother was still
alive.
Jake: I'm going to prove
to you we belong together.
Kendall: I'm moving into this
room with Mr. Lavery.
