ALL MY CHILDREN

MAY 24, 1999

Tad: Stop laughing. I didn't know.
Dixie: Everybody was staring at you.
Tad: So?
Dixie: You were shouting
Tad: So?
Dixie: You were shouting at the top of your lungs. Ah!
Tad: You'd think they never had guests that arrived in a helicopter before.
Dixie: They must have thought we were nuts!
Tad: Maybe. You've got helicopter hair.
Dixie: Oh, no, no. I hope you can love a woman with helicopter hair.
Tad: Hmm, that, Mrs. Martin, is going to become abundantly clear.
Dixie: Oh. We made it.
Tad: Yeah, we did. And I haven't been this happy since the last time we got married.
Dixie: That was so wonderful of Dimitri to lend us his helicopter. That was so much fun.
Tad: Yeah, I'm going to have to swear off Dracula jokes for a week. Although your neck does look particularly inviting.
Dixie: No! Help me. Save me.
Tad: Yes, you're mine, you hear me? Every inch of your soft -- which reminds me. On to the entertainment portion of the evening.
v Dixie: Ok, I have to ask you, what is in that bag that is so important that you wouldn't let the bellman carry it?
Tad: You may well ask.
Dixie: I'm asking. What's inside the bag?
Tad: In this bag, Mrs. Martin, is a little device that is going to take all the worry out of our honeymoon.
Dixie: What kind of little device?
Tad: I'll give you a hint -- you don't have to plug it in. It's got its own batteries.
Dixie: Tad!
Tad: Yes!
Dixie: Oh, my --
Tad: Power tools. Given our track record with bathroom doors, I'm not taking any chances. Come to Papa, baby.

Hayley: Oh, my God. He -- he did all this? All by himself? In such a short amount of time.
Mateo: Listen, some -- some stuff's been going on. I -- I was hoping I didn't have to tell you about it.
Hayley: What happened?
Mateo: We had --
Mateo: I found this.
Hayley: He did this to my picture?
Mateo: You know, Raquel said that it probably wasn't a good idea to tell him about the divorce. Obviously, she knew something I didn't know.
Hayley: You told him anyway?
Mateo: Yeah. What? I thought it was the right thing. You know, the sooner we tell him that we're going to be together, the sooner we all move on.

David: What difference does it make, Erica? My father is dead. And the gory details are none of your damn business.
Erica: I beg your damn pardon. If I'm going to be scarred for the rest of my life, it most certainly is my business. I deserve to know why, and I want to know what drives you to hurt people the way you do. So you tell me the truth and you tell me all of it.

Alice: The wedding was wonderful…beautiful. You must be thrilled.
Opal: Oh, yeah, I am. And what made the day even more special was that I got to share it with you, Alice.
Alice: Oh, I feel the same way. You all have been so wonderful. But I have got to be the most impolite person in the world right now and tell you that I'm going to go home tonight.
Opal: Home? Tonight?
Alice: Oh, I feel just awful
Adrian: Ma, what's the rush? Is it Edie?
Alice: Well, partly.
Opal: But I thought she wasn't due for a month or more.
Alice: Well, you know, we talked last night, and she and Matthew are a little apprehensive, you know, this being their first. She just wants me home.
Opal: Well, I understand. I mean, a girl wants her Mama at a time like that.
Belinda: Oh, but we didn't get to go shopping, you know, just the two of us. I really want--
Alice: Oh, I have a feeling that you and I are going to have a lot of time to get to know each other in the future. Don't you?
Opal: Adrian, are you sure you cannot talk your -- Alice here into staying a couple more days?
Adrian: Edie's her favorite.
Alice: Oh, now, that is not true. You're all my favorites. The funny thing is, is that Edie and all the other kids used to always say that you were my favorite. But I am leaving you in good hands. And it's obvious that you've got a few things you need to work out, and it's best that you work them out on your own, but it's important that you do it.
Adrian: So, what time is your plane leaving?
Alice: I'm not sure. Your father made the reservation. He's coming to pick me up.
Adrian: Daddy's coming here?
Alice: Yeah.
Adrian: Tonight?
Alice: Mm-hmm. He had to go through Philadelphia on union business. He made a little detour so we can all go home together.
Opal: Frank's coming here for you?
Alice: Mm-hmm.
Opal: Well, isn't that wonderful.

Tad: [French accent] et voila. [bathroom door is removed] Huh? Ha, ha, ha, ha! I certainly hope you don't have any privacy issues.
Dixie: You are a lunatic.
Tad: Madam, please, I prefer sanity-challenged. Mmm.

[Knock on door]

Tad: [Normal voice] oh.
Dixie: Aw.
Tad: Uh-oh.
Dixie: Yeah.
Tad: I hope you don't mind a honeymoon in Central Park.
Dixie: Oh, I guess we should open it, huh?
Bellhop: These were just delivered for the bride and groom.
Dixie: Oh! How nice. Let's see. Who's it from? Junior and Jamie!
Tad: Great kids.
Dixie: Oh.
Bellhop: And I'm very sorry about the door. I'll have that taken care of right away, sir.
Tad: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. That -- that's quite all right.
Dixie: Yes, we prefer a lived-in look.
Tad: Yeah, matter of fact, we're very, very happy with it the way it is.
Bellhop: Oh, well, would you like me to tell you about some of the features of the hotel? We do have a 24-hour --
Tad: No, as a matter of fact, we know all about your hotel.
Dixie: As a matter of ft, we could probably tell you some things about your hotel.
Tad: Only not now. Mmm.
Dixie: Mmm.

[Knock on door]

Tad: What is with this guy?
Dixie: Ugh! Let me get it.
Bellhop: I beg your pardon, but you didn't let me tell you about this.
Dixie: Ooh.
Tad: What's this? There must be some mistake. We didn't order room service.
Dixie: "Compliments of Dr. And Mrs. Joe Martin."
Tad: Let me see that.
Dixie: That's so nice.
Tad: Great family, lousy timing. Listen, my friend, I want you to take a good look at my wife and me because this is going to be the last time you see us tonight. Know what I mean? If there's a fire, you come and get us. Otherwise, you just forget that we're here.
Dixie: I heard you. You said your "wife and me."
Tad: My wife and me on our wedding night.
Dixie: Where's the bed?
Tad: Right there.

[Noise]

Tad: You smell something?
Dixie: Yes.
Tad: What the hell is that?

Hayley: I'll get the mop.
Mateo: No, no. He made this mess. He's going to clean it up.
Mateo: Hey, Max? Come out here, buddy.
Max: Ok, Daddy.
Mateo: Have a seat.
Mateo: What happened?
Max: Nothing.
Mateo: "Nothing"? I know you did this. I know you did this when your grandmother went over to check on your mom in the other room, across the hall. Now I want you to tell me why, and I want the truth.
Max: It was an accident.
Mateo: It wasn't an accident, Max, all right? I told you to tell me the truth.
Max: It was. It was all an accident.

David: The night my father died -- I've tried to put it out of my mind. I can go months without thinking about it. Sometimes I even delude myself into believing that the memory is free. But then it comes back.
Erica: Well, good.
Tell me, David.
David: But, Erica, I've never told anybody. What happened back then -- I was 12 years old. I've never put it into words.
Erica: Well, you told me that you once adored your mother, that you worshipped her when you were a little boy. And then I saw you almost literally step over her body when she was screaming for help when you thought she was having a heart attack. So when did that change happen, David? Was it that night? Was it the night of your father's death?
David: Look, you're asking me to talk about the most traumatic thing that's ever happened to me.
Erica: Well, what do you think this is to me?
David: No, there's no comparison. Your face is going to heal. I held my father in my arms as he --
Erica: Of course you would think there was no comparison because if it didn't happen to you, it isn't really important, is it? So that's why you need to talk, David. I really need to know how you got to be the person you are today. I really need to know how you became this creature you are. I really need to know why.
David: I can't. I can't start there.
Erica: Tell me about your mother.
David: You were right. That was the night that I first started to hate her, when I realized that she had no soul.
Erica: And before that?
David: She was an angel -- beautiful, charming, funny. She always had flocks of admirers. She was like sunshine personified. My father and I, we knew that she loved us best. She used to love cherry ice cream. Burgundy cherry is what she called it. We used to feed it to her on those long spoons, you know, those iced tea spoons? And we would take turns, and she would purr, tasting that ice cream, and her eyes would sparkle. That night, in the middle of everything that happened, I stopped, and my heart froze because I realized it was the ice cream that she loved, not us.
Erica: What happened that night?
David: They woke me up, arguing, which was very odd because they never argued. My father always gave in to her. He always gave her what she wanted. But that night, what she wanted was a divorce. I crept to the top of the stairs trying to listen. She was leaving him for another man. My father --
Erica: Your -- your father refused?
David: He begged, pleaded. "We deserve another chance. We could make it work. We are happy together." But she just laughed. "I found someone better. He's just as rich, and he's a real man." My father was a great and honorable man. He was gentle and soft-spoken, but he was very brave. He got a medal in Korea just when he was a kid. He was none of those things that she said about him. But he just took it because he loved her so much. Maybe if he had a mean streak, maybe if he'd made her pay -- but he just let her laugh, that same cruel, ugly laugh that I've heard so many times since. And --
Erica: What? What happened?
David: My father said, "What about David? If you don't love me, you can't leave him. He's your only son." And she said, "You can have him. He's just like you. He makes me sick." Can you imagine that? A mother saying that about her only son? It was the ice cream. She never loved either one of us. She married my father for his money, for his social position.
Erica: Well, Vanessa lead me to believe that she was a blue blood.
David: Well, she was princess in her father's hardware store. But to be fair, there was a chain of them. She wasn't broke. She wanted to be grace Kelly. And when she got what she wanted, were --
Erica: Expendable?
David: Yes. Expendable. She wasn't content to just walk out. My father tried to stop her. He stood between her and the door, and he said, "if you leave me, I don't think I can live without you." I know he didn't mean it. He was just saying that to try to get her to stay. But she just laughed, and she said, "what are you going to do, kill yourself?" I wanted to run in there and tell her to stop. I wanted to run in and tell her to just leave us alone if she hated us so much. But she wouldn't go. She was having too much fun now, reducing my father to something that she could wipe her feet on. She said, "what are you going to do? You can't kill yourself. You're not man enough to kill yourself. That's why I'm leaving you, because you're spineless." They just started yelling. I just wanted them to stop. But I couldn't do anything. It was like I was standing there watching this grotesque movie playing out before my very eyes. My father reached out to her, and he held her hands, he kissed her, and he said, "please don't," and tears were rolling down his face. And she just laughed. Next thing I know, she was turning to the drawer -- the bottom drawer, unlocking it -- of the desk. And I knew that's where they kept the gun. She stood there, checking the gun to see if it was loaded. They were talking over each other at this time, and my -- my mother handed him the gun. And I wanted to say, "shoot her! Shoot her! She hates us so much!" But I knew my father would never do something like that. And then the rest of it is like in slow motion. My -- my father, he put the gun to his head. My mother stood there motionless. And he cocked the trigger. And then my mother, at the last second -- her expression changed from one of cold derision to fear. And she started to shout out, "Charles, no!" But then it was too late!

[Gunshot]

David: Then I was able to find my voice and scream.
David: I finally moved.
Erica: You went to your father.
David: Yeah. And my mother turned to me with a look of extreme relief. "David" she said, "good. You're here." And then she turned around and left the room.
Erica: Was -- was your father dead?
David: I held him in my arms. There was blood everywhere. And I begged him not to die. No, I ordered him. I said, "don't you die on me. Don't you dare die on me."
Erica: Oh, David. That's exactly what you said to me that night in the car in the accident.
David: I've never let anybody else die on me since that night. I refused to lose anyone ever again. But my own father -- I couldn't save his life. He bled out in my hands.
Erica: David, it was horrible what you saw and what you went through. But, David, your experience -- it doesn't excuse you from being blind to other people's pain. I mean, other people suffer just as deeply as you. Can you really not see the pain you've caused me? Can you really not understand my sense of loss?

Alice: Look, don't wait on a vacation. Even if it's a long weekend, come on down.
Belinda: Well, sure, I'll come.
Adrian: I'm sure they'll show you all the hot spots in West Eleanor.
Alice: Oh, well, we have a few.
Belinda: Well, I have been working pretty hard, and I could stand a break, so I'll do that.

[Doorbell rings]

Belinda: I'll get it, Opal! Excuse me.
Alice: Ahem. I like her.
Adrian: No.
Alice: Yes.
Adrian: Really?
Belinda: Mr. Dawson.
Frank: Belinda.
Belinda: Hi.
Frank: It's really wonderful to see you again.
Belinda: Oh, same here. Come on in, please. Oh, we're just in there. Go right ahead.
Alice: Hey.
Frank: Uh-huh. Hey.
Alice: Hey.
Frank: Whoo! You know, you all look so nice. How was the wedding?
Alice: Oh, just gorgeous.
Belinda: Oh, it really was. You really missed an affair there.
Alice: Oh, you know, I wish you could have come earlier, honey.
Frank: Well, me, too, but you know how union meetings are. It takes forever. Everybody's got to make a speech.
Adrian: Well, I'm sure you set them straight.
Frank: Well, actually, yes, I did.
Alice: Oh, that's my Frank.
Frank: Well, I learned everything I know from you, baby.
Opal: I thought I heard the door. Frank.
Frank: Opal. Hey.
Frank: You know, it's -- it's lucky how my business trip worked out. I get a chance to see everybody.
Opal: Yeah, well, you know, I haven't decided yet if I'm going to let you take Alice home with you. We've been having too good a time.
Frank: Yeah, well, Alice has told me how at home you've made her feel. It's not that I didn't expect it, of course, but thanks, Opal.
Opal: Oh, well, I feel like I've known Alice all my life, and, of course, I owe her more than I could ever possibly --
Adrian: So are we going to have to make a mad dash to the airport?
Frank: Oh, we have some time.
Opal: Oh, great. Well, I've been preparing a little something in the kitchen.
Frank: So, how you doing, hmm?
Adrian: Fine.
Frank: You know, I was hoping that you'd use this time to have a good visit with your mother.
Adrian: Oh, it's been great, but now you're taking her away from me.
Frank: I meant your other mother.
Adrian: I only have one mother. Wish everybody would stop trying to make it otherwise.
Opal: He's right, you know. I agree with you. I'm going to check on the tea.
Belinda: I'll help you.

Tad: He says it's the air conditioning on the entire floor. How long will it take to fix the problem? An hour.
Dixie: We'll wait.
Tad: Ok, we'll wait. You don't have to come to the room to fix it, do you? Good. Thank you.
Dixie: Well, I say a little sweat never hurt anybody.
Tad: And I say that we can come up with all kinds of creative ways to occupy ourselves until the air conditioning comes back on.
Dixie: Ah! Ah! Ohhhhh!
Tad: Shh.
Dixie: Again?

Mateo: Max. Max. Here. All right, that's good. Thanks.
Max: You're welcome.
Mateo: Wait, wait, wait. We're not done yet. Come here. Why'd you do all this?
Max: I don't know.
Mateo: You don't know?
Max: I was mad.
Mateo: About the divorce?
Max: About Hayley.
Hayley: See, all this time, I thought we were friends. I mean, I know we're friends, max, and I know that sometimes friends get really upset with each other. They get really, you know, even angry at each other. But sometimes -- well, I know I've been angry at friends, and I'm sure you have, too. And it's good to talk about it, you know, to talk about it and get it out in the open. You think there's some way that maybe you and me can talk about it and find a way that we can be friends again?
Mateo: Hayley asked you a question, Max. Answer her. Is there anything you guys could do to be friends again?
Max: No.
Hayley: Well, sometimes, it's really good if you're really angry at your friend to get it all out in the open. And maybe we could take some pots and pans and bang them together really loud. Don't you think that's a good idea? No? Maybe we could go to the trampoline at the park, max, and we could bounce up and down on it, you know, and we can yell like Tarzan, you know --

[Tarzan yell]

[Max hums]

[romantic music plays]

Singer: Many nights we prayed

Tad: Well, one thing's for sure -- we were meant to be together.

Singer: In our hearts a hope for a song

Dixie: And all the little things that kept us apart along the way were --
Tad: What?
Dixie: Little detours?
Tad: Little detours?
Dixie: Huge, enormous detours?

Singer: We were moving mountains long before we knew we could whoa, yes.

[Flashback]
Dixie: Oh. Oh, I'm sorry.
Tad: I'm sorry. Heaven help me, I've just forgotten every woman I've ever met.

Dixie: I think you must be just about the nicest friend I've got.

Singer: Who knows what miracle you can achieve

[Flashback]

Dixie: Tad? What is it?
Tad: Look who I found.
Dixie: Oh, my God. The baby.
Tad: Well, don't just stand there. Take him.

Dixie: Oh. Oh, honey.
Tad: There you go. There you go. We will be Mr. And Mrs. Happily-ever-after Martin.
Dixie: You think that we could forget the bad things.

Singer: When prayer so often proves in vain hope seems like the summer bird's too swiftly flown away

[Flashback]

Dixie: Oh, my God! Tad! Tad!

Singer: Now I'm standing here

[Flashback]

Liza: Are you happy, Mother?
Marian: I warned you. I warned you all about Tad. Now maybe you'll believe me.

[Flashback]

Tad: Don't say good-bye to me.
Dixie: Tad, I've loved you for so long. I can't break the habit. You're in my heart.

Singer: Though hope is frail it's hard to kill

[Flashback

Dixie: I believe in Tad Martin, and I always have.

Singer: Who knows what miracles

[Flashback]

Tad: I gave you a music box. It said, "yours forever."

Singer: Somehow you will you will when you believe

[Flashback}

Dixie: I'm dying.
Tad: No you're not. No, you're not. I swear to God, honey, I'll do whatever I have to, but you're not going to die.

Singer: It's easy to give in to your fears

Tad: We're going to have a wonderful life together. It's going to be ordinary and remarkable all at the same time. We get to watch two boys grow up to be men and give them the chance to be something they've always wanted to be -- brothers. We're going to have years of fox trots and hotel rooms and terry cloth bathrobes. And if the past is any indication, we'll probably have all kinds of noisy, passionate arguments where we hang on to our opinions long after we know they're wrong. And then we'll have a lot of noisy, passionate making up.

Singers: You can achieve when you believe o how you will
singer: Somehow, somehow somehow
singers: Somehow you will
singer: No, no, no

Tad: Well, we were right -- for the last time, for the rest of our lives.

Singers: You will when you believe

Erica: The simple truth is you don't appreciate anybody else's pain, let alone take responsibility for it. I don't know what I expected of you.
David: Don't go. Erica, your face --
Erica: Yes?
David: I've lost track of time -- I have no idea how long we've been down here -- but dr. Fascinella has given us specific instructions as to the care of your face. Your scars need to be bath regularly. I know that it has to be time to do that now, so why don't you let my hand go and I'll take care of you.
Erica: Let your hand go so you can heal me? Huh.
David: Look, I can understand why you would be skeptical, but I won't try to escape. Honestly, I won't. I'm sincerely concerned about your face.
Erica: There's just no hope for you. Look, I just -- I'll come back later when I decide exactly what I'm going to do with you.
David: Erica, wait a minute, please. Just listen. I did a terrible thing to you. I know it. I've always known it. I just haven't been able to admit it. And I know that I can never make up for what I did to you, but please, it would be compounding a wrong if you don't at least let me help you repair the damage. I can help you.
Erica: You want me to free your hand so you can help bathe my face? And the minute I do, you will try to escape, and you'll go to the police, just the way you said you would, and I will lose my daughter forever.
David: No, I won't, Erica. I swear it.

[Max stops humming]

Mateo: Go to your room. No TV. Yeah, Raquel said he would be upset. I guess she was right.
Hayley: Well, you were only trying to do what you thought was best.
Mateo: Yeah. We need help.
Hayley: You mean help help?
Mateo: Yeah, this -- this isn't normal. You know, we need someone to tell us, maybe get some tools to help us, some type of strategy to help Max, you know? Hayley: Yeah, I think it's a good idea. But what will Raquel think?

Adrian: I know you're going to say that I was probably rude to Opal.
Frank: "Rude" doesn't even say it. You were cruel, and I never thought I'd say that about you, son.
Adrian: Everyone's so worried about hurting Opal. What about hurting you?
Alice: Me? How could you hurt me?
Adrian: You know something? All that time when I was growing up, I really felt that I was your favorite. I thought that I was special. But now I'm starting wonder if that was because I wasn't your real child.
Alice: Oh --
Frank: Adrian, this --
Alice: Oh, no, no, don't blame him. That is not it at all.
Adrian: And I don't want it to be it. You're my mother.
Alice: And you are my son, and nothing -- do you understand me? -- Nothing can change that. You think that loving Opal means you love me less? I mean, that's what you mean by hurting me? You think that you're being disloyal to me?
Adrian: I don't know.
Alice: Oh, honey, you couldn't be. You couldn't be. I know that your love for me will never change, but even if you managed to find a little spot in that big old, kind heart of yours for Opal, ok? Come here.
Frank: Yeah.

[Romantic music plays]

Dixie: Wow, I guess I didn't realize it was going to get this hot.
Tad: You didn't?
Dixie: Well, I guess I did.
Tad: Well, you'd better buckle your safety belt, because it's going to get a lot hotter.

Vanessa: [to herself} Well, I suppose David should pay for telling his sad, sad story. And I suppose Erica should pay for listening to it.

Erica: No, this is too sad, David. I mean, even now you're using what happened to my face against me.
David: Whatever you may think of me, you know one thing -- I am a doctor above all else.
Erica: That's what everyone says.
David: I heal people, Erica. If I don't do that, I'm not me anymore. You need medical attention. Now, just let my hand go, and I will take care of you. I won't try to escape, I promise. I swear on the lives of my patients. Please, Erica, let me help you.
