ALL MY CHILDREN

MAY 23, 2000

Erica: Do you know what this looks like, David? Do you?
David: Which part?
Erica: Which part? I'm Erica Kane.
David: Well, I'm certainly aware of that.
Erica: I'm Erica Kane! And thanks to that hideous mother of yours, the whole world thinks that this gigolo, this hideous man, this Paolo Caselli has written me piles of love letters.
David: The late Paolo Caselli.
Erica: Yes! People think that I had an affair with a dead man.
David: Well, I'm sure they think you were sleeping with him when he was still alive.
Erica: David.
David: I'm sorry. But you want to know what's funny about this?
Erica: Nothing is funny.
David: What's funny about it is that you're more concerned that people think you were sleeping with a gigolo than the fact that my mother's trying to set you up with his murder.
Erica: She is trying to get rid of all of us -- your brother, me. Why do you think she's doing this, David? Why do you think she shifted focus from your brother to me?
David: I don't know. But if my mother killed Paolo --
Erica: If?
David: Then I have to get proof. Otherwise, we just sound like a couple of screaming, paranoid maniacs. Erica, you have to let me figure out exactly what my mother's trying to do to you and to Leo, ok?

[Knock on door]

David: Thanks for stopping by, Leo.
Leo: Not at all. No problem. I love a lopsided bet.
David: You think you have all the answers, don't you?
Leo: No, but you do -- as long as it means destroying Mother. So come on, lay it on me, David. What new lies did you cook up to make my mother look like a killer who would set up her own son?

[Knock on door]

Greenlee: Good. I couldn't sleep, either. I was wondering if you or Scott wanted to order a pizza. Or perhaps a mood-altering diversion?
Ryan: Scott's staying at Marian's for a while because of his dad.
Greenlee: Oh.
Ryan: And my mood's fine. My mood's fine. The company's really taking off, I'm busy as hell, everything's great. Everything is great.
Greenlee: Ok, ok. So has Cynthia e-mailed you lately?
Ryan: No. No. And to tell you the truth, this elusive thing she's pulling is really wearing a little thin.
Greenlee: It is?
Ryan: Well, I got other clients to worry about, you know.
Greenlee: Yeah, but she was, you know, your special client.
Ryan: Well, she didn't show up at the roll-out party, so what am I supposed to do?
Greenlee: That's not exactly true. She left that flower behind. She was there.
Ryan: Well, if she doesn't talk to me, I can't help her. I don't really have time for these games.
Greenlee: Well, then I'll make her my special client if you don't have the time for her.
Greenlee: She's back.
Ryan: What?
Greenlee: Cynthia, your elusive one. You've got mail.

Gillian: Alex, I heard a -- oh, my God, is he dead?
Alex: Yeah.
Gillian: Isn't this Guy, the new trainer for the horses?
Alex: Close the door, Gillian. That's not his name. He's not a horse trainer. He's a spy.
Gillian: A what?
Alex: He tried to kill me.
Gillian: Oh, my God, Alex.
Alex: We were struggling for the gun and it went off. It just happened.
Gillian: Are you ok? We have to call the police.
Alex: No!
Gillian: Alex, what choice do we have?
Alex: We cannot call the police under any circumstances. Do you understand? If we do, Edmund will be killed.

Man: Mr. Grey, do not open that door. I insist.
Edmund: Listen, I explained to you the urgency of the situation, didn't I?
Man: And we are taking your word that this is a serious matter. Sir, I am here to accompany you on your questioning, but you cannot enter a private office unauthorized. Dr. Griffith must be aware --
Edmund: Shh, look, Dr. Griffith is as much of a doctor as I am, and believe me, this is no hospital you want to be checked into.
Man: What are you saying?
Edmund: Look, I tried to explain to you before, this place is harboring a man who tried to electrocute a woman on my property in the United States. Now, if we call them and say "explain the situation," I don't think they're going to give us a guided tour, do you under--

Dr. Griffith: What on earth is going on here?
Guard: I tried to stop them, Dr. Griffith, but --
Dr. Griffith: Constable Brown, this man has been harassing me and my staff for days, and I insist that you arrest him immediately.
Edmund: Well, that's fine by me. But first why don't you show me what's hiding behind door number one.
Dr. Griffith: No, no.

Gillian: Did guy try to hurt Edmund? Is that why you shot him?
Alex: It's not that simple.
Gillian: Simple? Alex, we're standing in your house with a dead horse trainer between us. I'm not thinking anything right now is simple.
Alex: Listen to me. I'm going to need you to hold this together while I'm gone. Can you do that?
Gillian: Where -- where the hell are you going to go?
Alex: Guy, or whatever the hell his name was, was supposedly out of the country, and Edmund followed him.
Gillian: But so if guy is dead, how can Edmund be in any danger?
Alex: Because it's a setup and he's walking right into it.
Gillian: Alex, please just calm down and explain to me what the hell's going on here.
Alex: I can't. It's too complicated. I have to get to Wales immediately.
Gillian: Wales? If we call the police, they can get in touch with the authorities over there.
Alex: No! That's not going to happen. I have to do this myself.
Gillian: But Derek and --
Alex: Derek is very we-meaning, but he's totally ineffectual. He'll have me here tied up for two weeks with questions, and Edmund could be -- I have to do this myself.
Gillian: Alex, you -- you can't just shoot somebody and leave a body here. You just can't do that. Don't you think people will think that you murdered this Guy if you just walk away and leave him here? Do you hear me?
Alex: Look, if you help me, no one will be any the wiser.
Gillian: Help you how?
Alex: I need you to call the staff. This phone line is dead. Do you have a cell phone on you?
Gillian: Yeah.
Alex: Ok, you call the staff, you tell them to stay away from here until I return.
Gillian: How long are you going to be gone for?
Alex: I don't know.
Gillian: This body is going to start to --
Alex: Oh, I can't worry about that right now! Don't you understand? My only concern is Edmund.
Gillian: Yeah.
Alex: You lock the doors when you leave. You tell the staff to stay away from here.
Alex: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry you had to see this. It'll be all right. You lock the door when you leave.

Gillian: What am I going to do?

Constable Brown: Mr. Grey, you must come back here!
Edmund: If you'd gotten me that damn warrant, we'd be able to get to the bottom of what this hospital's really about.
Dr. Griffith: Constable brown, do you see the depth of the harassment that we've had to endure at the hands of this paranoiac?
Edmund: You're not getting away with this.
Dr. Griffith: Get away with what, pray tell? This hospital is a haven for unfortunate souls that cannot take care of themselves, and you have the audacity to --
Edmund: Did you take care of your housekeeper?
Dr. Griffith: Martha's death was deeply felt by the Bryn Wydd family.
Edmund: Oh, yeah. I bet it was.
Constable Brown: Wait. The poor woman died of a heart attack.
Edmund: Yeah, just before she was about to tell Alexandra Marick how she knew her and what this place is all about.
Dr. Griffith: What this place is all about is ministering to the sick.
Edmund: You are making me sick. Where's Guy?
Dr. Griffith: Who?
Edmund: Guy, John, Dick -- whatever his real name is. The guy who tried to kill Alex in my home!
Dr. Griffith: Constable Brown, remove this insulting man from these premises this instant.
Edmund: Look, this place is a front for an espionage ring. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Constable Brown: Mr. Grey --
Edmund: Get the damn warrant!
Constable Brown: If there is any validity to your accusations, the local magistrate will commission a warrant by morning.
Edmund: That'll be too late.
Dr. Griffith: Haven't we heard enough of this, Constable? Don't you think --
Edmund: No, don't you think you're going to get away with this for one minute.
Constable Brown: Mr. Grey --
Edmund: Do you understand? Listen, you come after Alex and you come after my family, you come after me, and there is no coming back after that. Constable brown: Mr. Grey, you need to control yourself. Mr. Grey!

Quinn: Your brother's very determined, Mr. Marick. But you're very sedated and I'm very quick, so, so far, no harm done. And by tomorrow, if I have anything to do with it, you'll be dead. So no more close calls ever again. Sweet dreams.

Leo: Haven't we had this conversation already, like 15 times?
David: Didn't you already admit that Vanessa's capable of murder?
Leo: She's totally capable of murder, David. But she wouldn't murder somebody and blame me. I mean, if she was blaming you, I would understand. You're a lousy son.
David: How long are you going to wait to see if I'm right?
Leo: Well, you're not, so I guess the answer to that is forever.
David: And what are you going to do when she gets all her pieces together and your time has run out, Leo? You going to keep defending your mother then?
Leo: Are you going to defend Erica when they prove that she's one that offed Paolo?
Erica: I beg your pardon. Look, I don't have to listen to this slander.
Leo: No, no, no, you guys asked for it. Why do you keep calling me down here? I know the truth.
David: Really? Well, do you know that those love letters that miraculously ended up in Erica's purse were planted there?
Leo: You'd love for me to believe that, wouldn't you?
David: What would you say if I told you that Vanessa put them there to shift suspicion from her and on to Erica?
Leo: Oh, so now my mother is just trying to frame Erica, is that right, so I'm off the hook? What is with you, David?
David: What is it going to take to get this through to you, Leo, to prove to you? Just tell me, please.
Leo: This. That is proof that my mother would never, ever try to hurt me.
David: Matchbooks from the most expensive European hotels? Press clippings of Vanessa on rich men's yachts. Can't wait to hear this.
Leo: Means nothing to you?
David: No. Absolutely nothing.
Leo: Guess what -- this is my world, and it means everything to me. This, David, is my life -- the life that she gave me at birth and every single day since. I suppose it looks like a bunch of junk to you, though, right? Every single one of these things has a story attached to it that means something to me. These matches? From the Lido in Paris. I was 8 years old. And every single teacher on the continent of Europe wanted to write me off. But she came and she took me back to Paris with her. She was engaged to a rich French businessman at the time, who preferred that I'd stayed invisible. But there I was every single night, out on the town with them, being treated like an adult, being made to feel special. And all along, Jean-Paul seethed. He hated it. But she didn't care, David. She didn't care if it meant that he would dump her or that he would take all of his money with him. She didn't care. She was sending him a message that I came first and that I would always come first. And so he did dump her. And she moved on. But she never -- not once, did she ever move on from me. Not once.
David: You really believe in her.
Leo: More than I believe in myself.
David: Leo, what kind of a mother takes an 8-year-old child to a nightclub? Takes a student who can't read, can't grasp math, has discipline problems from the get-go -- what kind of a mother takes a child like that from school to school, country to country, so that he can't feel rooted, can't grow, can't learn?
Leo: You don't understand. You never did.
David: I understand that it's very painful for you to accept the fact that what she did was neglectful.
Leo: I mattered to her, David. I still matter to her.
David: Leo, the only thing that matters to Vanessa is Vanessa. She is a narcissist of the first order and she will bury you alive, man, if it means getting what she wants -- and unfortunately, the only thing she's ever wanted from a man is cold, hard cash.
Leo: Drop dead. You drop dead.
David: Leo, Leo, look, I know -- I know that we haven't had the opportunity to get close, and I know you don't trust me.
Leo: Trust you? Yeah, right.
David: I'm trying to help you. But you have to open your eyes.
Leo: No, you open your eyes, David, and you leave me the hell alone.

David: He is so blind.
Erica: No, he's not. I know exactly what Leo's going through, David.

Ryan: So Cynthia says she was at the roll-out party for incredibledreams.Com, but she -- she got scared.
Greenlee: Scared? Ryan: Yeah, she saw the crowd and she just sort of wigged out.
Greenlee: Hmm, she doesn't like crowds.
Ryan: No, she says she's a little bit shy and she gets awkward, you know.
Greenlee: Poor thing.
Ryan: Yeah.
Greenlee: Well, are you going to respond?
Ryan: You know, I probably should, but I don't know, I mean, I don't know if I can help her. What am I supposed to do about somebody's insecurities? I can't help that.
Greenlee: Yes, you can. You did with me.
Ryan: I did?
Greenlee: Yeah, yeah, remember how I told you being Greenlee Smythe takes so much work? I don't fit in anywhere, no matter what you think. I hate the country club, but I'm supposed to love it, and I love the TV studio, but everyone thinks I'm just a trust-fund baby and so they don't take me seriously. I don't fit in. I am Cynthia, if you want to know the truth.
Ryan: Ok, Cynthia, enlighten me. Tell me just how hard it is for you to belong.

Eugenia: Oh, my God. Well, you were serious. What happened here?
Gillian: I'm not sure. What are we going to do with it?
Eugenia: Did Alex really say that we should leave it here undisturbed? Gillian: Yes. And she's gone off to Wales, of all places, to try and help Edmund because he's in some kind of danger and -- we can't just -- can't just leave him here. Oh, I'm going to faint.
Eugenia: Don't, darling. Don't faint, please. Go sit down, sit down. Careful, ok? We need a man, don't we? Yes, we need a strong, silent type of man, preferably, don't we?
Gillian: No, Grandmama.
Eugenia: Yes, you must.
Gillian: I'm not --
Eugenia: You must, you must, you must. I mean, we can't leave this poor thing here just to -- to disintegrate.

Greenlee: I was in therapy a long time, and I would say to my shrink every week, "you know, I have no right to complain. I'm beautiful, I'm rich, I have good taste." But, you know, I was --
Ryan: Miserable.
Greenlee: Lonely.

[Telephone rings]

Greenlee: Is the machine on?
Ryan: No, I'll get rid of whoever it is. Ahem. Incredibledreams.Com, Ryan speaking.
Gillian: Ryan, it's Gillian. Please don't hang up, I'm begging you.
Ryan: Why are you calling me?
Gillian: I need your help.
Ryan: All right, here we go again.
Gillian: I need your help with a dead body.
Ryan: What? What are you talking about? That is sick.
Greenlee: Who is that?
Ryan: Wait a minute. I didn't think you had it in you.
Gillian: Alex shot a man, and -- and I have to get rid of the body.
Ryan: Gillian, what kind of sadistic, twisted are you talking about here? What --
Gillian: You talk to him because he doesn't believe me.
Eugenia: Ryan, this is Eugenia. Yes, we truly do need your help.
Ryan: Wait a minute. This isn't a joke?
Eugenia: No, of course it's not a joke. Will you come?
Ryan: Yeah, I will. Where are you? Ok. All right. I'll be right there.
Gillian: Say nothing to no one. Do you understand me?

Ryan: I got to go.
Greenlee: What, to Gillian?
Ryan: Nothing. Never mind, ok? Just do me a favor and lock the place up when you leave.
Greenlee: Well, Ryan, where are you going?

Gillian: Ryan sounded so angry with me.
Eugenia: Oh, Ryan would go through fire for you. You know that.
Gillian: All I know is -- is that I hope Alex gets to Edmund in time.

Edmund: Where are the real files, Dr. Griffith?
Dr. Griffith: Really, Constable, are you going to remove this man or should I call your station for backup?
Constable Brown: Mr. Grey, we cannot do a thing until there is a warrant, and there can be no warrant until morning.
Edmund: Yeah, I know. All right. I have questions. You answer them, I'll go.
Constable Brown: Dr. Griffith?
Dr. Griffith: All right. As long as I have your word, Mr. Grey. You ask the questions and then you go in peace.
Edmund: You have my word.
Dr. Griffith: Can you leave us alone, then, Charles? I think my guard and I can talk to Mr. Grey on our own.
Charles: All right, then.
Edmund: So, am I going to find Guy with a gun on the other side of that door?
Dr. Griffith: If you're so afraid of harm, sir, why did you let the law go?
Edmund: You want the truth, Doc? I'm not sure which side of the law he was on.
Dr. Griffith: This man, Guy -- I'm sorry to disappoint. He's not on the other side of the door.
Edmund: Why don't I believe that?
Quinn: Believe this.

Quinn: His brother's in a secured room, as dead to the world as he is.
Dr. Griffith: This was too close. Has Guy called in yet? Does he know that Edmund flew back here to tail him?
Quinn: I can't raise Guy -- not on the phone, not on the computer. You don't think --
Dr. Griffith: It can't be. Can it?
Quinn: All I know is that Alex Marick should be dead by now. And by all accounts, she isn't. Damn these American troublemakers. I want them both got rid of. Tonight.

Gillian: No police, Ryan. Alex made me swear.
Ryan: Wait a minute. Where is she?
Gillian: She's gone, ok? So, please, will you help us get rid of this body? Or is there too much stuff going on between us?
Ryan: Hey, Gillian, it's ok. I owe you. All right? Not too many Princesses would almost freeze to death in an ice shack trying to hide me from the police. Remember that? So consider it even between us after this, ok?
Gillian: Thank you.
Eugenia: I'm sorry, I don't think I can cope with this.
Gillian: Grandmama.
Eugenia: It's all right. I can't cope. You will handle it, won't you, Ryan? Please?
Ryan: Yes. Yes, yes. I'll handle this.
Eugenia: You'll be fine, my love. You'll be fine. You'll be fine. Just this sort of thing -- oh, I'm too damned old.

Ryan: Well, this is kind of romantic, isn't it?
Gillian: Ryan.
Ryan: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I got him.

David: You know what Leo is going through? What does that mean?
Erica: I finally understand who Leo is.
David, I want you to do me a very, very big favor.
David: Regarding Leo?
Erica: Yes. I want you to drop this.
David: What?
Erica: Don't follow through on your plan. Don't expose your mother for Paolo's murder.
David: I can't believe I'm hearing this.
Erica: If you do, David, if you think that taking Vanessa down will save Leo, you're wrong. You'll lose him. You'll lose him forever.

Becca: Leo? Thought that was you.
Leo: Becca. What are you doing out here so late?
Becca: Oh, well, this is my shortcut home from Stuart -- I was with Scott at his stepmother's house.
Leo: Oh, well, don't let me keep you. What?
Becca: "What" yourself. Leo, are you ok? You look like you just lost your best friend.
Leo: That's not possible.
Becca: Why not?
Leo: Because I don't think I have one. How about you?
Becca: Well, I don't know if I qualify as a best friend, but I'm here for you, if you want me to be. What's in that?
Leo: The past.
Becca: Yours?
Leo: Yeah, and my mother's. I tried to show this stuff to David tonight, but he basically thought it was worthless.
Becca: But it's not to you.
Leo: You see, you just know that. You don't even have to see what's in here.
Becca: It's not so hard to figure out.
Leo: Yeah, well, David's trying to destroy my future and my past at the same time.
Becca: I don't understand. Why don't you tell me what happened -- I mean, if you want to.
Leo: David thinks that my mother killed Paolo.
Becca: What?
Leo: No, wait, it gets better. Not only does he think that she killed him, but he also thinks she's purposely trying to frame me for it.
Becca: Your mother?
Leo: That's what I said.
Becca: But, I mean, she wouldn't. I mean, she wouldn't really.
Leo: No.
Becca: Ok.
Leo: That's it? Just "OK"?
Becca: I believe you.
Leo: Becca, you know my mother.
Becca: I know. But a mother wouldn't do that to her son ever. It's unthinkable.
Leo: Thank you. That means a lot. I felt awfully alone in this whole thing.
Becca: You don't have to be alone if you don't want to be.
Leo: Oh, my God, Becca.
Becca: What?
Leo: Becca, run away with me.

David: You've lost me, Erica. My mother has decided to set you up for a murder you didn't commit instead of my brother, and you're worried about Leo's feelings?
Erica: No, David, it's not just his feelings, it's -- it's his life.
David: Vanessa is guilty. You could be accused of Paolo's murder.
Erica: I know.
David: She set you up. She planted phony letters in your purse to make you look guilty.
Erica: I know she did, and I'll make her pay. But I can't just break Leo's heart to do that. Don't you see this, David? Leo worships her. She's his lifeline. And you want to take that away from him.
David: I want to break the control that she has over his life.
Erica: But if you do it the way you're doing, Leo will never recover. Please believe me. I know this. I know this down to my soul. I know it because I've been there, David, because that's how I worshipped my father. I did the same thing. I kept clippings and post cards and pictures of my father, too, just like Leo does. My father gave me things to remember him by -- autographed photos of the stars -- and I used those things to prove that my father loved me. He just worships your mother so much, and you can't take that away from him right now. I mean, if someone had taken it away from me then, I just don't know what I would have done.
David: Erica, you were a little girl. But Leo, despite appearances, is an adult. And he has to learn to take responsibility for his own life.
Erica: But if you try to force him to give up the one person who gives him love --
David: My mother does not love him.
Erica: But if you keep telling him that, David, you will destroy him. Look, eventually, he'll realize that Vanessa is a fraud, just like I realized that about my father. And he won't want the souvenirs anymore. He'll burn them.
David: Ok, and what do I do until then, hmm? I let Vanessa win? Let her destroy you and my brother at the same time?
Erica: No, I'll take care of me. And I will certainly take care of Vanessa. But if you care about your brother at all, David, please don't do this. I swear to you, it'll kill him.

Greenlee: "Dear Ryan, yes, it's me again, Cynthia. Please don't think less of me for not keeping my word with you the other night. But it is hard for me to do the right thing --"

Ryan: Wait a minute, wait a minute. You? You're Cynthia?
Greenlee: Oh, my God, I didn't want you to find out. Please don't hate me, Ryan. Please don't hate me.
Ryan: I don't, I don't, I don't. I love you, Greenlee. I love you. Now I know the real you because of Cynthia.

Greenlee: "Because I never want to be anything less than what you'd expect me to be."
Ryan: Oh.
Ryan: All right. All right, all right. That should hold -- hold Guy for a little while. You ok?
Gillian: I don't know.
Ryan: Well, if you need me to do anything else, you know -- well, I think I did my good deed for the day. I stuffed a dead guy in the closet for my ex-wife. Now I'm going to go home and have a beer and watch TV.
Gillian: I didn't want to call you. Grandmama insisted.
Ryan: But you did, and I came. And now I think I'm going to leave.
Gillian: Ryan, wait.

David: Your sympathy for my brother is very touching, Erica. But it doesn't stand up.
Erica: To what?
David: To the real-life legacy that is my mother. The woman is a monster, and my brother is thoroughly captivated by her. I'm just sick and tired of standing by, watching him self-destruct because of her.
Erica: David, don't rip his heart out.
David: Either I rip it out or she does it. If Vanessa rips it out, he goes to jail. So which would you choose?

Becca: Leo, be serious.
Leo: I am. Come on, just run away with me, Becca.
Becca: No, Leo, come on.
Leo: We can cash out all my credit cards.
Becca: Oh, great plan.
Leo: Brazil. Come on, we'll go to Brazil. That's where we'll go. We can get lost. Nobody will ever find us.
Becca: Leo --
Leo: Please just think about it.
Becca: Leo, I know that you're scared and you're afraid that you're going to get nailed for something at you didn't do, but running away with me or without me is not going to solve anything. Even with everything that's happened between us, I still really care about you. Let me help you through this.

Gillian: Ryan, thank you. I will never forget this.
Ryan: No, you probably won't. And you're welcome.
Gillian: And I'm not thanking you for what you did, I'm thanking you for just coming over when I needed you.
Ryan: I can't help taking care of you, Gillian. I just can't. Come on, let me walk you over to the house. I should never have thought of leaving you alone in here with him --

[Guys body falls out of the closet]

Gillian: Aah!
Ryan: It's ok. It's ok, I'm here.

Dimitri: Oh, Alex. It's all over now. You're safe.
Alex: I love you.

[Door opens]

[Door closes]

Dimitri: Edmund?
Dimitri: Edmund?

ON THE NEXT…………ALL MY CHILDREN

Gillian: I'm going to stay the night with you.

Erica: You can help us to get Vanessa to confess to having killed Paolo.

Dr. Griffith: You've inconvenienced me for the last time.
