ALL MY CHILDREN

MAY 26, 2000

TV announcer: That's right, folks -- in the privacy of your home, you can achieve dramatic results fast, in only 10 minutes a day.

Arlene: And the mind spins.
Adam: Why are you still here?
Arlene: Mimosa. A.K.A., Hair of the dog. Thought you'd like it better than a six-pack, muscle boy.
Adam: Why's that?
Arlene: Oh. Because you were pretty drunk last night. I mean, not that I minded. Actually, you were a lot of fun for a while there, until you passed out on the couch.
Adam: What the hell do you think you're doing?
Arlene: What?
Adam: That. That's Liza's.
Arlene: Well, it's pretty, isn't it?
Adam: Take it off.
Arlene: I thought you'd never ask.

Stuart: Oh. I hope didn't wake you.
Esther: No, I was up. Did you have enough hot water?
Stuart: Oh, yeah. Plenty. I found this on a hook in the shower. I didn't want to be -- well, you know -- undressed. I was -- I was just thinking while I was in the shower maybe we could go back to where I got hurt.
Esther: No, that's not a good idea, Stuart.
Stuart: Why? If it helps me remember -- Esther: No, but it would be a bad memory. That's why, you know, I think that if we got married -- I mean, you know, remarried -- that you would remember all the good times that we had together.
Stuart: Uh-huh.
Esther: Stuart, you always keep your promises. So I think that if we renewed our vows, you would remember how much we loved each other. You know, I don't think that we need to wait to get our car fixed to go to Las Vegas. I really don't.
Stuart: What do you mean?
Esther: We could get married here.
Stuart: In the trailer?
Esther: No. No, I was thinking about the diner, since we're, you know, practically family there.
Stuart: Oh, yeah, well, I don't know. In order to take care of you, I'd need a real, regular job.
Esther: But you have a job at the diner.
Stuart: No, that's just temporary. We need -- we need probably $5,000 before we could get married.
Esther: $5,000? No, that could take months and months. No, no. I can't wait that long to get you back again.
Stuart: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Maybe I could put in some overtime.
Esther: You just can't make somebody love you, can you? You can't force somebody to marry you if they don't feel the same way that you do. I shouldn't have tried. Some dreams just aren't meant to come true. Are they?

Brooke: Grace, I've got the quarterly forecast. Grace? Hey! Hey, hey, listen -- break it up! Break it up!
Eliot: Drop it!
Brooke: I work here. We don't allow that kind of behavior.
Eliot: Brooke, Brooke, he's got a knife.

Vanessa: All right, Leo did not kill Paolo. I did it. I put the drug in his champagne. I stood there. I watched him drink the whole thing down. But I never thought it would kill him.
Palmer: Why did you do it, Vanessa?
Vanessa: It was a mistake. Palmer, I was only trying to incapacitate him. I left before he overdosed.
David: And once you knew what you had done?
Vanessa: Don't you see? Really, how could I be involved with a scandal like this? How could I confess to killing a man like Paolo?
Leo: So you let your son take the rap for you instead?
Leo: They arrested me for Paolo's murder.
Vanessa: Leo -- oh, dear God --
Leo: You watched them haul me in for something you did and you said nothing. You killed a man and you let them blame me. Vanessa: Oh, darling. It was never sup-- supposed to be this way. I am telling you the truth now, Leo, so that you can clear your name, have a life. I wasn't about to let him ruin mine or yours.
Leo: What if they convict me?
Vanessa: No.
Leo: What if this goes to trial a they convict me?
David: We're all witnesses, Leo.
Vanessa: Oh, dear God, it was never supposed to be like this. Leo, I'm having a heart attack right now. David says I'm not going to make it.
David: You're not dying.
Vanessa: What?
David: I gave you something that mimics the symptoms of a heart attack.
Vanessa: What?
David: This will take it away.
Vanessa: Oh.
David: It really stinks, being taken for a fool, doesn't it?
Vanessa: I am not dying?
David: Don't sound so disappointed.
Vanessa: Well -- you told me I was dying so I would confess.
Leo: How could you do this to me?
Vanessa: No, no, Leo.
Leo: How could you do this to me?
Vanessa: No, David did this.
Leo: No, you did it. If I stay here another second, I'm going to get sick.
Vanessa: Leo! No, no --
David: Leo!
Erica: No, David, David, just let me.

Vanessa: Palmer, what are we going to do?
Palmer: "We"?
Vanessa: Palmer, I can explain all of it.
David: Why don't you explain it to the police.
Vanessa: What? You bugged my room? Palmer, you -- you see what my own son has done to us?
Palmer: Did you get it all, David?
David: Every breathless second.
Vanessa: You knew?
Brooke: I'm calling the police.

Eliot: Wait! How many priors you have, huh?
Man: I needed the cash.
Eliot: Oh, really? So you decide to steal it from the homeless?
Man: Look, Rev. Freeman, I'm sorry.
Eliot: Then why you still holding that knife?
Eliot: This is about as low as you can get, pal. I wonder what your father would say.
Man: Oh, Rev. Freeman, if you tell my father, he'll kill me. I swear I wasn't going to use the knife. It's just for props with the guys on the corner.
Eliot: I won't tell your father.
Man: If?
Eliot: No if. The church basement needs painting. Got an estimate the other day that we just can't afford, so --
Man: I'll do it.
Eliot: 3:00 Sharp. And every morning starting at 6:00 A.M. Before school until it's done. Could take weeks.
Man: I'll be there, I swear it.
Eliot: You'd better be there. Now, go on, get out of here. Hey -- if you're one minute late this afternoon, I call your father.
Man: I'll be there.

Eliot: I'll -- I guess I'll just turn this in to the police, say I found it. Brooke, hey, a little white lie like this is within my bylaws. What's -- what's the matter? You ok?
Brooke: I'm fine.
Eliot: Oh, what -- I was back working on the boiler and I heard the glass break, so I -- what is wrong?
Brooke: Who are you?

Esther: I was just being silly.
Stuart: No, you weren't. I hurt your feelings.
Esther: Oh, no, Stuart. You don't ever hurt anybody's feelings. You wouldn't know how. You're too nice for that. Not like me.
Stuart: No, don't talk about yourself like that. Look at you. You're so sweet. And all you really want is just for things to be like they were with us. We should get married. Or, as you say, remarried.
Esther: You would do that for me?
Stuart: Well, I'm already your husband. Right?
Esther: Uh-huh.
Stuart: Well, this will just remind me. What are we waiting for?
Esther: I'll ask Marilyn and Judd if we can have the diner for our wedding. And -- oh, and maybe, you know, they know, like, a justice of the peace or something, you know.
Stuart: Great.

Arlene: You're just nervous because I make you feel things that rich, famous men who live in mansions aren't supposed to feel. And I am happy to oblige.
Adam: Does this really work on anyone? This runaway 18-wheeler approach? My God, you make your way into my house, you drink my liquor, you sleep in my bed, you wear my wife's clothing. You actually think this is a turn-on for me?
Arlene: You tell me.
Adam: You are so wholly unapologetic.
Arlene: When I do something that I think I should be apologetic for, I'll tell you.
Adam: Uh-huh.
Arlene: I gave you the guts to be reckless last night, and you know it -- to say and do whatever you feel and not give a damn about anyone else. And it felt great, didn't it? Talk about a turn-on.

Winifred: Good morning, Mr. Chandler.
Adam: What is it, Winifred?
Winifred: Uh, Mrs. Chandler just called and she asked if you'd had your breakfast yet, and I said that I'd be happy to fix something for both of you.
Adam: No. No, no, no. Call her back, tell her I'm out for the rest of the day. Do as I say, Winifred.
Winifred: Uh, sir, I got the impression that Mrs. Chandler is on her way over from the gatehouse to see you now.
Adam: Then go.

Arlene: Well, I should be going. I have a little fence-mending to do.
Adam: Don't come back, Arlene.
Arlene: Oh, now, Adam, there's that little matter of the $500,000 that you promised me to get you out of Oak Haven.
Adam: I already told you -- Liza has my power of attorney.
Arlene: Yeah, well, I broached it with her and she was a little icy. You know, Adam, I always thought that your tastes were more spicy.
Adam: Well, you're wrong.
Arlene: Am I?

[Door closes]

Liza: Adam.
Adam: Uh, this is not a good time.
Liza: I think that Colby knows that something's going on. I can sense with her that she knows that something's going on, that her parents are upset, that you're hurt and angry and frustrated. And I think it's awfully silly for us to think that she's too young to have these feelings and understand what's going on. She needs reassurance, and not just from me.
Adam: Take her away, please.
Liza: No.
Adam: Just take her away, damn it!
Liza: Winifred?
Winifred: Yes, ma'am?
Liza: Would you mind just watching Colby just for a minute?
Winifred: Oh, my pleasure. Hi, pumpkin. You come with me, yeah.
Liza: In case she needs it.
Winifred: Yes, ma'am. Yes, look what I have.

Liza: Are you all right?
Adam: I'm not fit company for a child.
Liza: You know the funny thing about kids? They don't care. Unconditional love is a gift. I feel like you're drowning and you're not doing anything to help yourself.
Adam: If I decide to give up, Liza, that's my concern. Mine, not yours.
Liza: Is that what you're doing? You couldn't save Stuart, so now you're just going to join him?
Adam: "Join him"? Stuart doesn't belong where I'm going, and you know that. So just let it go, all right?

Marian: Good morning.
Liza: Oh, morning, Mom.
Marian: I was hoping we could all have breakfast together.
Adam: Oh, perfect.
Marian: Adam, we need to talk about Stuart's estate. I've decided to leave the bulk of the money to the university to set up an art scholarship, and that kind of thing can get quite complicated.
Adam: Well, fine, none of that concerns me. Do what you want.
Marian: Adam, Stuart was your brother. I thought you'd like to participate, to help celebrate his life.
Adam: "Celebrate his life"? He's dead! He's dead! You want to honor Stuart's memory, just do me the favor of never speaking his name to me again.
Marian: Well, I can't do that, Adam, because Stuart is still alive in my heart, and he always will be. And no one, not even you, can take that away from me.

Esther: What'd he say?
Marilyn: Sorry.
Esther: He won't marry us?
Marilyn: Not unless he does it from his hospital bed. The JP's having an emergency appendectomy. It doesn't sound pretty.
Esther: Isn't there anybody else? I have to marry Stuart today, Marilyn.
Marilyn: Are you pregnant or something?
Esther: No!
Marilyn: I'm just kidding. You know, there is this one guy.
Esther: He can marry me and Stuart?
Marilyn: We, his brother can. I met him in here. He came in on his way back to Vegas. His brother is a JP. In one of those all-night chapels.
Esther: Oh, you've got to call him right now, Marilyn.
Marilyn: Man, you're pushy!
Esther: Well, I just want to marry the man I love. Is that so bad?
Marilyn: Nah, it's just weird, considering you're already his wife. Let me see what I can do.

Mr. Enoch: Just not sure if I got any more work I can give you, Stuart. I mean, you've seen this place. It's not exactly standing room.
Stuart: I was thinking just almost anything, maybe some repairs or something.
Mr. Enoch: You know, I've been kicking around this one idea, and Esther says that you were an artist.
Stuart: Oh, yeah, well, I was. I'm not so much anymore.
Mr. Enoch: I know exactly what I want. New logo, new name -- Queen of Hearts. And I'll pay you for the effort, Stuart.
Stuart: Well, I'll surely try. I just hope it's good enough.
Mr. Enoch: You're a modest guy. You'll do a great job.

Leo: How could I have been so blind?
Erica: People see what they want to see. Don't beat yourself up. She's your mother. You believed in her. I get it, you know. I wanted to believe in my father.
Leo: Can it, Erica. First of all, you don't know me or my mother, and second of all, this is so not about you, it's not even funny. So take your compassionate moment of bonding and beat it. I'm not interested.

Vanessa: Just stop this. Just stop it!
David: You know something? Even though I don't trust you, even knowing everything that I do about you, a small part of me believed that maybe -- maybe Leo was right this time and that you really did care about him in some sick way. But look at you -- faced with death, confronted with the truth, your youngest son running out of here destroyed, and all you're worried about is yourself.
Vanessa: Oh, that is not true, David.
David: Did you see his face, mother? Do you have any understanding of what you've done to him? Any at all? Leo was the only person on this planet that believed in you. And you betrayed him.
Vanessa: You know -- you see, Leo understands me, David. He knows who I am. And you have been jealous of that ever since the first day you met him. But he'll forgive me. My Leo will forgive me.
David: No, he won't. You lost him, mother. You lost everything. In fact, why don't you have that heart attack after all. It'd be the only selfless thing you've ever done in your entire life. What are you doing?
Palmer: This tape isn't going anywhere.
David: Palmer, what are you talking about?
Palmer: It's mine.
David: Palmer, I need that tape to clear Leo's name.
Palmer: I will handle this. Am I clear?
David: We're on the same page.
Mother, You really are the selfish monster I've always said you were.
Vanessa: David, I will never forgive you for this.
David: I don't want your forgiveness. All I want is for Leo to have a chance of a normal life. Maybe he can do that now -- if it isn't too late.
Vanessa: Well, he'll never side with you, David, because he has a heart.
David: You mean he had one. You shattered it.

Vanessa: Palmer -- thank you for standing up for me, darling, because I know that David's been spewing these lies about me for weeks. But thank you for taking the tape away from him before --
Palmer: Oh, I don't want your son to have this kind of power over you. No, no.
Vanessa: No, no, of course not, darling. Palmer, you do believe me that I never intended for Paolo to die?
Palmer: Start at the beginning, Vanessa.
Vanessa: The beginning?
Palmer: Mm-hmm.
Vanessa: Well, Paolo was trying to frame me. Really to get to you, just to bleed you dry.
Palmer: No, no, that's not the beginning. That's the end. No, I -- I want to hear about the good times, when Paolo was lavishing his attentions on you. Now, let's start with that. Don't leave anything out.

Erica: I had a scrapbook of my father, just like you have this collection from your past with your mother. I know how devastating it is for you to realize that she is not who you thought she was. My father --
Leo: Your father was a cut-rate Hollywood poseur who never did anything.
Erica: He was glamorous and he was bigger than life, and I worshipped him.
Leo: Whatever.
Erica: It took me years to realize that the man I wanted him to be only existed in my fantasy world. And, Leo, I tried to pretend for a long time that it didn't matter, but it does.
Leo: Will you please go now?
Erica: No, I won't.
Leo: Do you get off on watching me unravel?
Erica: No. And you're not --
Leo: You couldn't let it go, could you, Erica? You or my brother. Neither one of you is going to be happy until you've ruined my life and took away my mother.
Erica: Don't do this.
Leo: No, admit it. Admit what you've done and get the hell away from me. You took away my le tonight. Are you happy now?

Eliot: What do you mean, who am I?
Brooke: What I mean is, what happened to the friendly minister with a clerical collar I met last night? Today, you're a part-time law enforcement officer and boiler cleaner?
Eliot: Not your idea of a man of the church, huh?
Brooke: Not really, no.
Eliot: Well, you know, if you're looking for Father Flanigan of Boys Town, then you're looking in the wrong place. Does that bother you?
Brooke: Why should it bother me?
Eliot: Well, I mean, you're chairman of the board here. Your name's on the letterhead. I just brought in a kid I hired and he comes back here and he tries to rob the place with a knife in his hand.
Brooke: I trust your instincts.
Eliot: You don't know me.
Brooke: I get what you were trying to do with that kid. How long have you been a minister?
Eliot: What, do I act like an amateur?
Brooke: Oh, no. No, no, no. I was just curious.
Eliot: Well, it seems like forever. But, I mean, what about you? I mean, how are you feeling? Better than last night, I hope. Brooke: I should apologize for that.
Eliot: Why?
Brooke: I just -- I just had a lousy day.
Eliot: You were upset.
Brooke: Well, I'm fine now, 100%.
Eliot: Good. You know, the things that we were talking about, like, your daughter's death --
Brooke: You know, I -- I shouldn't have laid that on you. I mean, I just met you and I was trying to -- I don't know what I was trying to do. You know, usually I wait a couple of hours before I open my heart to somebody.
Eliot: You're embarrassed.
Brooke: No.
Eliot: It's ok to feel that way.
Brooke: I didn't think I needed permission.

Arlene: Brooke? I am sorry to interrupt, but your secretary told me that I --
Brooke: Oh, Rev. Freeman, this is --
Arlene: I'm Arlene.
Eliot: Hi, Arlene.
Arlene: I need to talk to you.
Eliot: Well, I have to get back to the boiler. I'm not quite dirty enough yet. Excuse me.
Arlene: I'm sorry.
Brooke: Oh, no, no. I was just talking to Rev. Freeman.
Arlene: Oh, no. That's not what I meant. I'm -- I'm sorry to have been such a burden to you, and I want to thank you for everything you've done.
Brooke: Arlene, all I want is for you to not drink and drive again.
Arlene: I've learned my lesson. I have.
Brooke: I don't want this to sound cruel, but it's obvious that you're not happy. You know, and if you get behind the wheel of a car after you get drunk again, the odds are that you will kill somebody. And if you think that you're not happy now, what do you think you're going to feel like with the knowledge that you took a life?

Adam: I want to know why! For God's sake, why? Isn't this exactly what you wanted?
Liza: No.
Marian: Liza, please, let's leave him alone.
Liza: Mama --
Adam: Wasn't it your mission to rip my heart out, to end my life, to have me committed so I could lie in my own garbage and wither away? And now you so suddenly expect me to need you to care about me for the sake of our daughter! You tried to keep me away from our daughter! You tried to send me to prison because of our daughter!
Liza: Stop it! What happened to you is not what I wanted to have happen to you.
Adam: No, you're lying. It's better!
Liza: I'm not lying. I went too far. The whole thing went too far.
Adam: Good, I forgive you, ok? Just get the hell out of my sight!
Liza: You don't have to forgive me.
Adam: Isn't that what all this bleating is about -- forgiveness?
Liza: Maybe. Maybe the person that you need to forgive is yourself.
Adam: Just go, both of you. Take the baby with you.

Winifred: Excuse me. I have breakfast all set up and Colby's in her highchair, if you --
Adam: No, put it away. Everyone's leaving.
Winifred: Shall I bring Colby back in? Mrs. Chandler? Is he going to be all right?
Liza: I don't know. You were right. I did this. I did this to him. I should never have done this to him when I knew I couldn't control it.
Marian: Liza -- Liza, listen to me -- Adam's to blame for all of this. I want you to remember, he's the one who started this all with his selfishness.
Liza: Mama, I try to get angry at him and I can't. I look at him and it just breaks my heart. I love him. I love him more than I ever thought that I could, and he's gone. And I want to do anything I can to get him back. Do you know what I mean? Oh, Mama, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Marilyn: Guess what.
Esther: He'll do it?
Marilyn: The JP said he would stop by and marry you guys today.
Esther: Stuart! Oh, Marilyn did it! She found a justice of the peace! He's on his way here right now.
Stuart: Oh, wow. Great. I'll go get dressed.
Esther: Yeah.
Marilyn: There's one thing.
Esther: Oh, what? I've got money.
Marilyn: Oh, money's not the thing. This JP.? He's a little different.
Esther: What do you mean?
Marilyn: He's an Elvis impersonator. And he has to do the ceremony in costume or he won't agree to it.
Esther: I don't care. I'm getting married. He can sing if he wants to.

Arlene: I mean it, Brooke. What happened the other night was a real wake-up call.
Brooke: What night would that be, Arlene? The night that you crashed your car into the telephone pole and sent it through that window or the night that you stole my car out of my driveway, drunk both times?
Arlene: You have every right to be angry. Look, I -- I know that your daughter died that way.
Brooke: Laura didn't die. She was killed. Drunk drivers kill people. And it's those people that I'm worried about, Arlene, not you.
Arlene: Ok. I deserve that. But I'm going to earn your trust. I will. You know, I -- I don't mind the hard line that you're taking with me. Tough love can work. It's better than no love at all, right?

Eliot: It never goes away.
Brooke: What?
Eliot: The pain. Of losing your daughter, I mean.
Brooke: How could it?
Eliot: That woman Arlene that you're trying to help --
Brooke: I'm not in the help business anymore. Reverend, I think that's your job. It's late. I have a meeting at my office, so I have to go.
Eliot: Look, Brooke, I -- listen, I just want you to know that if you want to talk about anything anytime, I'm here.

Palmer: So. So, you claim that Paolo Caselli was blackmailing you so you would go to bed with him?
Vanessa: Yes.
Palmer: Vanessa, can't you do any better than that?
Vanessa: Palmer, that is the truth! I hated every single minute of it. It was humiliating, but I had to pretend. Otherwise, he was going to come after you for every single thing. I thought I was protecting you.
Palmer: Oh, this is precious. Really, just so precious. I had no idea what depths you could dive to. You know, I've been on to you for weeks.
Vanessa: There's nothing to be on to, Palmer!
Palmer: But, you know, I warned you that I could not be made a fool of. You thought you could outsmart me? Are you really that ignorant?
Vanessa: Well, don't you dare stand in judgment of me because you tried to have me killed!
Palmer: Yes, I did. And when I realized that I'd made a mistake, I stepped in and I took the bullet for you. But would you look at yourself now? Just look at yourself? You're lying to me again. And even worse than that, you tried to -- you tried to send your son to prison for murder that you committed. Now, who wouldn't stand in judgment of that, my dear?

Erica: Leo, I know how devastating this is for you. I really do. But your mother wronged you, and you can't defend her and you can't blame David and me for what happened because the truth -- it just had to come out.
Leo: Did David send you here to make peace with me?
Erica: No.
David: Leo. You all right?
Leo: You go to hell.

David: He'll be ok. He'll survive without her.
Erica: Like you have? Full of so much anger and hate and resentment that you n hardly function? That you can hardly carry on a relationship with anyone?
David: Erica, he had to know the truth.
Erica: Don't expect it to set him free.

Palmer: You cuckolded me, didn't you? You sold out your own son. Well, this is going to insure that you get everything that you deserve. You can count on that Vanessa.
Vanessa: Palmer Cortlandt, as God is my witness, I swear --
Palmer: No, no, Vanessa. No need to call on the almighty now. No, no. You're in enough hot water as it is.
Vanessa: Well, exactly what are you going to do to me?

Liza: It's ok, sweetie. Daddy's going to be with us soon enough.
Marian: Liza, you can't say that.
Liza: Mama, I'm not going to give in. Adam is going to come back to us and we are going to be a family again. And that's all there is to it.

Arlene: Don't count on it, sweetheart.

Mr. Enoch: Now, I may be fishing, but I think you look hungry.
Tad: Shows, huh? I've been on the road for a long time. Looks like you're busy. I was wondering if I could bother you for a tuna fish sandwich?
Mr. Enoch: I never turn away a customer, even on a wedding day.
Tad: A wedding? Yours?
Mr. Enoch: No. If it was mine, I wouldn't be dressed like this.
Tad: Thanks.
Mr. Enoch: Here's your water. I'll go fix your sandwich. On toast?
Tad: That would be great. Terrific.
Mr. Enoch: Well, we can't start till Elvis gets here, anyways.
Tad: Elvis is coming to the wedding?
Mr. Enoch: You're welcome to stay, if you like.
Tad: Well, heck, if Elvis is going to show, you couldn't drag me out of here.

ON THE NEXT - - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Esther: It's Tad Martin.

Adrian: Ready for a little trip?
Dixie: Tell me, where am I headed?

Leo: I'm going to tell you what I really think about you.

Palmer: Who's going to go to prison -- Leo or you?
