ALL MY CHILDREN

NOVEMBER 11, 1999

Jack: Opal, what I'm saying is you could limit your liability by just taking checks and money orders. Unfortunately, you also limit the opportunity for anybody to do impulse buying, which is not a good thing. Now, I don't expect you to take my marketing advice just because I'm your lawyer.
Opal: That's good because I'm not going to. Listen, I just want you to get my web site up and running real nice and legal-like, ok?
Jack: Yes. That's why you called this meeting, isn't it?
Opal: What, you think I want to sit and schmooze about the internet when I have got some serious skinny about a certain old dog and his greedy new wife? Now, remember when I told you I thought there was a storm brewing in their decrepit old Garden of Eden?
Jack: No, in fact, I don't.
Opal: Oh, come on, Jackson.
Jack: Look, Opal, Opal, Opal -- this side of the species does not go in for gossip. What?
Opal: Oh, come on. Lest we forget men's night at the Glamorama? A veritable hotbed of rumor and innuendo. Now, do you want to hear my scoop or not?
Jack: Oh, gosh, yes. And the old dog in the story, that would be your ex-husband, I'm betting. Yes.
Opal: None other than. Well, anyway, you know, when I saw Palmer give Vanessa that "one more word and I'll wring your neck" look -- a look I'm all too familiar with, by the way --
Jack: I'm sure of that.
Opal: I decided to do a little research into just exactly what the worm in their apple might be.
Jack: And?
Opal: Aha. Look at you. Other side of the species. You're practically panting.
Jack: Ok, so the worm in the apple, that would be what? She maxed out the old coot's credit cards? Put a ding in his convertible?
Opal: Oh, she is dinging more than his classic cars. She is having an affair with a younger man.

[Palmer's nightmare]

Vanessa: Ah, what a pleasure it is to share my bed with such a lean, finely tuned man. Thank you, darling. Mmm. You know, I feel like a completely new woman.
Man: You shouldn't need me to make you feel renewed. Palmer has obviously drained the life out of you.
Vanessa: Darling, it's like living in one of those food dehydrators.
Man: Leave him.
Vanessa: Oh, nonsense. And do what? Palmer pays the bills. If I left Palmer, what would we live on, darling?
Man: Love.
Vanessa: Soon enough, sweetie. Palmer will leave this life soon enough. And when he does, I will finally be able to enjoy the one thing I truly do love about him -- his fortune, my inheritance. Then you and I can be together without a care in the world.
Man: Think he knows about us? Does he even suspect?
Vanessa: Palmer? Please. He's such a dolt. No. He's no match for me -- in bed or out.

[Laughter]

Palmer: No! No.
Vanessa: What? What, palmer? What is it? Darling, are you ill? Did you have a bad dream? Palmer, what?

[Janet remembers her past with Sophie]

Janet: Sophie?
Janet: Sophie?
Janet: Hi, Sophie, it's me. How you doing?
Sophie: Who's this?
Janet: Janet Green. You remember me.
Sophie: Not offhand.
Janet: This is Sophie Malinowski, right? Come on. We worked in the laundry room together. Remember that time I accidentally spilled bleach on your foot?
Sophie: Four eyes.
Janet: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's me.
Sophie: Yeah, with the snapshots of the kid.
Janet: That's right.
Sophie: How's the free world treating you, hmm? Ever get back with your little girl?
Janet: Well, yes and no. I've run into a glitch. You know, life is so hard for an ex-con.
Sophie: Yeah. It's no afternoon on the Riviera.
Janet: People want to brand you for life.
Sophie: Don't let it get you down.
Janet: Oh, no. I'm not. I'm not a quitter. I'm fighting back with everything I've got. That's why I'm calling you. I need your help. You really got rid of your past with a big bang, didn't you?
Sophie: Yeah, I guess you could say that.
Janet's voice: Well, I'd be eternally grateful if you could walk me through every detail.
Janet's voice: I cried that night because it was Amanda's first birthday without a mother. Natalie had been killed in a car crash, and I was in jail because of an unfortunate incident with Will. It just didn't seem fair that my baby should grow up without a mother to hold her and love her and protect her from --
Sophie: It was you. You're Janet.
Janet: I cried until the sun came up. And then I realized -- I realized that a new day was dawning and that I had another chance to be Amanda's mother, that she would know her mother's love because I was going to do whatever it took to get out of jail and to be with her again. I decided to be the mother for Amanda that she deserved. Forget about all the incompetent lawyers and stupid judges and her ridiculous father and his paranoid friends. I'm going to be a good mother to Amanda even if it means I have to blow up half of Pine Valley to get the chance. That's where you come in.
Sophie: No offense, but I don't think your therapy took.
Janet: No, don't you understand? I was robbed. I'm a victim of mass hysteria, of vigilante justice. All I want is what's mine.
Sophie: Amanda.
Janet: I knew you'd understand. Calling you to help me build a bomb was a dynamite idea.

[Sophie arrives at the boathouse]

Sophie: Janet. What's it been, a couple of thousand years?
Janet: Almost five.
Sophie I guess reports of your death were exaggerated, huh?
Janet: That's a long story.
Sophie: I'd like to hear it sometime.
Janet: Why'd you come back?
Sophie: For your help.

Amanda: Do I have to eat all my oatmeal, Hayley?
Hayley: Yeah. It's good for you.
Amanda: Daddy says it puts hair on my chest. He's just saying that, right?
Hayley: Yes. Hurry up. Come on. Eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Amanda: How come you're not eating, then?
Hayley: I am going to eat as soon as you leave for school.
Amanda: It's because you're worried about Ryan and Gillian, aren't you?
Hayley: Now, how did you get toe so smart?
Amanda: They'll be ok. Daddy says so.
Hayley: Oh. Well, then that you can believe. Plus I went to see Ryan yesterday, and he looked so good, I think he's going to be up shooting hoops before anybody thinks he should be even getting out of bed.
Amanda: And Gillian?
Hayley: She's going to need a little while longer.
Amanda: Maybe I should make them both a get-better-or-else card.
Hayley: I think that's a swell idea. Where's your mom?
Amanda: Still asleep, I guess. Hi, Dad.
Trevor: Hey, sweetie. How you doing? Time to get you off to school, get you to the school bus. Come on, let's go.
Amanda: Daddy --
Trevor: What are you doing hanging around here, honey? We got to get moving. Get moving. Get moving. Go get your books.

Trevor: Did you talk to Ryan?
Hayley: Yeah. He still can't really remember what happened after he passed out in the car.
Trevor: So he's still saying that he was trapped in the car even though the EMT's Found him outside the car?
Hayley: Well, he's confused, you know.
Trevor: And he still says that Mateo left him trapped in the car.
Hayley: Yeah, that's right. You know, he doesn't really remember much else. He said he looked at Mateo. Mateo looked at him. He asked him for help, and then Mateo turned his back and walked away. That's all he remembers.
Trevor: Tink, I'm not trying to get you upset here.
Hayley: But that's not going to stop you, really, is it?
Trevor: Well, I got to be honest. I mean, there's some holes in the story. First Ryan's stuck in the car. Then he's outside the car. Then Mateo walking away. And then -- but he's there when the EMT's show up. And Mateo's not the kind of guy that walks away and leaves somebody to die.
Hayley: Uncle Trevor, you of all people should know how a person can change for the better or for the worse.

Nurse: No sleep last night, no breakfast this morning. Is this a strike?
Ryan: No. I just don't really feel like boiled eggs. Got a lot on my mind.
Nurse: Got any pain, nausea, headaches?
Ryan: No. No, I'm fine, really.
Nurse: Well, you buzz me if you need anything.
Ryan: Ok. Thanks. I'm fine.
Nurse: Ah, you said that already.

[Ryan remember more of the crash]

Ryan: Mateo, come back.
Mateo: Just hold on. I'll be back with help.

Mateo: So, what do you want to talk about?
Ryan: You saved my life. Why'd you do it? Why didn't you just leave me there to die?
Mateo: You told Hayley I walked away.
Ryan: That's all I could remember at the time. I was in and out of it when I was trapped in the car, Mateo. You must have -- you must have seen that. Even after they brought me here, I couldn't even put two thoughts together. Slowly stuff's been coming back to me, bits and pieces.
Mateo: Bits and pieces, right. So the bits and pieces you decided to share with Hayley was that I turned my back on you and left you there to die.
Ryan: That's all I could remember until now. I'm telling you I remember now that you said you were coming back.
Mateo: Yeah, that's what I said.
Ryan: Why?
Mateo: Why? What do you mean, why? The car was going to explode.
Ryan: Right, but I know how you feel about me and me coming --
Mateo: Ryan --
Ryan: Between you and Hayley.
Mateo: Ryan, Ryan, you know what? I know how I feel, but thank you for the update. Now, if this is what you want to talk about, you know, I don't want to talk about this with you, ok?
Ryan: Look, look -- you think that I told Hayley that you turned your back on me so she would turn her back on you. That's what you think, right?
Mateo: Ryan, you don't get to know how I think or what I think. Congratulations on getting your memory back. I've got stuff to do.
Ryan: Mateo, just wait a second, please. Just -- I'd like to know why. I'd like to know why you didn't leave me there.
Mateo: You know what? I -- I thought about it.
Ryan: You did?
Mateo: Yeah.
Ryan: Well, then why didn't you?
Mateo: Because it's not who I am. Ryan, I've got enough things on my mind without you taking up space on my conscience, ok?

Trevor: You're comparing Mateo to Janet.
Hayley: I got to go.
Trevor: Whoa, whoa, whoa. One minute. You're talking about how Mateo is all of a sudden getting cold-blooded, and then you're casting aspersions on my wife?
Hayley: You know I love your wife.
Trevor: Ok, fine. Then while we're on the subject, let me talk to you right about that right there. If you love somebody, there's no benefit of the doubt. It just comes with the territory. It's not something you give and take. It's just there.
Hayley: There is no benefit of the doubt here. I don't know what benefit of what doubt you're talking about because there is no doubt.
Trevor: What the EMT's said -- that doesn't make you question the situation?
Hayley: I got to go.
Trevor: Tink, Tink, I'm just being honest with you, and you got to be honest with yourself here. You're throwing away your relationship with Mateo because Ryan recalled something when he wasn't even conscience really.
Hayley: I went to Mateo, and Mateo did not deny anything Ryan said.
Trevor: So you're just going to chuck what the EMT's said about Mateo being there at the scene when they got there? How can you explain that?
Hayley: What about what Ryan said and what Mateo confirmed about being there? How can you explain that?
Trevor: Well, Mateo, if he went anywhere, didn't go far. I mean, who knows what happened? Maybe the car was about to blow, he had to take off. Maybe he had to go check on Gillian. But you owe it to yourself and Mateo to check this out.
Hayley: Maybe Mateo was going to stand there and watch Ryan burn, and that's an option I'm not willing to explore. And now I'm done discussing this, ok? I'm going to go see w Ryan's doing. Tell Amanda that if she wants to go to the mall after school, I'll take her.

Amanda: Is it true, Daddy?
Trevor: What?
Amanda: Was Mateo really going to let Ryan die?

Janet: You need my help?
Sophie: Yeah. See, I lost my recipe for building a bomb. I thought maybe I could borrow yours. Oh, come on, Janet, get over yourself. A little while after I helped you out with your explosive device, I ran into some trouble.
Janet: Yeah? I didn't know.
Sophie: Yeah, you didn't ask, either, huh? Well, anyway, because of my priors and all, they threw the book at me -- 15 to 20.
Janet: Oh, no. That's awful. I'm so sorry. But you're here. You busted out? You did, didn't you?
Sophie: I didn't do anything wrong. You got that? I was set up. Are you hearing me?
Janet: I hear you, but don't know how you think I can help you.
Sophie: Do you remember how desperate you were? They wouldn't let you see your kid, your own kid, and you came to me for help.
Janet: But what I did was wrong.
Sophie: Wrong? No, wait, wait. Fill me in.
Janet: I was a different person then.
Sophie: Oh. Oh, yeah. Well, then who are you now? Because I need to speak to that other Janet.
Janet: Things have changed. I'm married to a really decent guy who loves me, and I'm now the kind of person that I always thought -- that I knew I could be. So why don't you just wish me well and we'll leave it at that?
Sophie: Oh, yeah, sure. I do. I'm freaking thrilled for you. You are a miracle of modern rehab. But you still owe me.
Janet: What? What do you want me to do? You're a fugitive. How could I help you?
Sophie: I -- I did a lot for you. What kind of explosive, how big a footprint, what kind of ejecta -- those are a lot of serious calculations.
Janet: I know.
Sophie: We agreed that 50,000 was a fair price, and I helped you build that bomb. I was there for you when you needed help. Now, all I'm asking is the same from you.
Janet: I'm not sure I understand.
Sophie: I want the dough, Janet. All 50 G's.

Trevor: Sweetheart, what have I told you about eavesdropping?
Amanda: I couldn't help it, Daddy.
Trevor: Oh?
Amanda: Daddy?
Trevor: Yeah?
Amanda: There's a difference between listening and hearing, and you guys weren't whispering.
Trevor: You should've been a lawyer. What do you want to ask me?
Amanda: Mateo thought Ryan was trying to take Hayley away from him, so he tried to get rid of him. That's what you're saying.
Trevor: Well, that's what some people are saying. Worst-case scenario, yeah.
Amanda: But if it is true, the only reason Mateo did it is because he loves Hayley.
Trevor: If Mateo did it. I mean, the jury's still out on that. Boy, you've done a lot of thinking about this, haven't you?
Amanda: Reminds me of when Mommy thought Natalie was trying to take you away so she put her down the well. It's almost the same thing with Mateo and Ryan. It's a bad thing, but Mommy only did it because she loves you.
Trevor: That -- ahem -- that happened a long time ago when your mom wasn't thinking straight.
Amanda: I know. And she wouldn't do anything like that again because she has you, me, and Tim to love her -- and Smokey.
Trevor: Yeah, you can't forget Smokey. So she never has any reason to be afraid of being alone again, and she's not going to act crazy like that ever again. You can count on that. Mommy loves us, and we love Mommy, and she's never going to be bad again. I promise you.

Janet: That money? The money's gone.
Sophie: Well, get it back.
Janet: I can't. I just lead a normal, simple little life.
Sophie: As a lawyer's wife. They roll in dough. Get it from him.
Janet: You think I'm going to go to my husband and ask him if he's got an extra 50 grand laying around? You think he won't ask questions? He's an ex-cop. You want to end up back in jail?
Sophie: You were there. You know what it is like. I can't go back. I'll go nuts inside of five minutes. You won the lottery. Every one of your dreams came through. And what about me? What have I got? I put my butt on the line for you when you needed help, and all I am asking for is the same in return. I just want a square deal.
Janet: I know.
Sophie: So?
Janet: I'll try. I'll see what I can do. Is there someplace I can call you?
Sophie: No. I will get in touch with you. Thank you, Janet. I knew you weren't going to leave me twisting in the wind.

Jack: Thank you. So, do you have proof about Vanessa and this young lover?
Opal: Proof? I got ears. Vanessa was at the Glamorama the other day, and she borrowed a phone to make a very intriguing call.
Jack: Which you just happened to overhear.
Opal: Well, how could I avoid it, Jackson? I mean, with the way she was gushing. And then she got real quiet -- you know, like she didn't want anybody to hear -- and real sultry. Well, you know what I'm saying.
Jack: No, I don't.
Opal: Oh, never mind. Anyway, when she got off the phone -- I don't know how it happened -- maybe I was cleaning up or something -- but my finger just accidentally bumped into the redial button and the call went through and a man answered. And he sounded mighty young to me.
Jack: You know, those darn redial buttons. I bump into mine four or five times a day.
Opal: Oh, hush up.
Jack: He sounded young? Opal, Tom Selleck sounds like a teenager whose voice is still changing. Sounded young -- what does that mean?
Opal: Well, her body language was just saying, "Oh, look at me. I am chatting up a young boy, and my husband doesn't have a clue with all his riches."
Jack: That's some fluent body.
Opal: Are you going to sit here and defend Vanessa Bennett while I'm buying you breakfast?
Jack: You're buying me breakfast?
Opal: Well, yes, I am, if you stop busting my chops.
Jack: Ok, that's a different story. With breakfast --
Opal: All right.
Jack: You get free legal advice.
Opal: Ok, I like this.
Jack: And my legal advice to you is this evidence is a little bit thin, Opal. I mean, she could have been talking to anybody -- her hairdresser, her stockbroker, her decorator, anybody at all.
Opal: I'm telling you as sure as you're sitting on your cute little patootie that she has got a stud stashed away somewhere and she's using palmer's money to keep him. Well, speak of the devil, and up he jumps. Come on. Come on, get cozy.
Jack: Oh, Opal, not this again. It just makes me feel cheap.
Opal: Come on, come on. Stop bellyaching and start whispering in my ear.
Jack: Look, Opal, do you really think Palmer is going to buy us as a couple?
Opal: Well, don't sell yourself short, sugar. I mean, a good-looking, smart-thinking guy like you? Really, I think he could believe that you'd be able to catch a woman as alluring and dazzling as me.
Jack: Shucks, ma'am, you just won my heart.

Ryan: I wasn't deliberately trying to give Hayley the wrong idea. Look, I told you, after the crash I was out of it. I was -- I was zoned out. And by the time they brought me here, I was whacked out on painkillers. I didn't remember everything. I told Hayley that.
Mateo: It doesn't matter.
Ryan: It matters to me. You saved my life, man.
Mateo: Well, it won't happen again, ok? Who knows? Maybe you would have made it out of the car on your own.
Ryan: No, I wouldn't have. I wasn't going anywhere on my own. I would appreciate if you told me what happened when you were there, fill in the blanks for me.
Mateo: Gas was leaking out of the car. The power lines were sparking. I went and grabbed a branch, moved the lines, pulled you out of the car. The car exploded.
Ryan: Well, I'll make sure Hayley understands what happened.
Mateo: Don't bother. See, I don't care what Hayley thinks and I don't need you to make her understand anything, ok?
Ryan: I owe you my life.
Mateo: No, you don't. You owe me nothing. Not a damn thing.

Mateo: Take it easy. I didn't come here to finish the job.
Hayley: Trevor spoke to the EMT's, and they said that you were there at the accident site when they got there. Mateo, I need to --
Mateo: What, you want answers? Eyewitness accounts? I tell you what. Your boyfriend's in there. Ask him.

Palmer: I tell you, is there no escape?
Vanessa: Beg pardon?
Palmer: Those two again?
Vanessa: Oh, that woman has no couth whatsoever. She's making a spectacle of herself, and at this time of the morning.
Palmer: She has nothing to hide, you know. She's guileless. Whatever Opal is thinking or feeling, it's on her face. She's the original open book.
Vanessa: I'd say she's more like a billboard, darling. You know, how have you put up with it all these years? It must have been absolutely excruciating for you, darling. Well, should go say hello.

Vanessa: I just hope this weather lasts, holds out for our party, because the balcony, the terrace is going to be so beautiful, so romantic with those tiny little tinkling Italian lights. Oh, Jackson, you did get our invitation to our belated wedding celebration?
Opal: Oh, well, of course. Of course. You and Palmer didn't think that we would stand you up, now, did you, Vanessa? I mean, we are absolutely looking forward to your big blowup -- blowout, aren't we, honey?

Janet: You leaving?
Amanda: Yeah. Have a nice run?
Janet: Yeah. Did you get some breakfast?
Amanda: Hayley made me oatmeal.
Trevor: Yep.
Amanda: And can she take me to the mall after school? Thanks. I knew you'd say yes. Got to go. The bus is here.
Janet: Good-bye, sweetheart.
Trevor: Bye, honey. So, what is a spry young thing like you running from?
Janet: What?
Trevor: What's with the sudden jogging routine, babe?
Janet: Oh. Just trying to defy gravity and keep your heart's flames burning for me.
Trevor: My heart's flames. You don't go be pounding the pavement to keep me boiling for you, baby. You're the best thing that ever happened to me.
Janet: You're a good man, Trevor. The best I've ever known.
Trevor: Ah. That's perfect because you're a good woman -- the best I've ever known.
Trevor: Yeah, baby, you're shaking.
Janet: Oh, it must be the adrenaline rush. You know, those endorphins are probably kicking in. In fact, my legs are starting to cramp up a little.
Trevor: Well, let me help you out there. Whoa. Talk about a shape. This is some shape you got, I tell you.
Janet: I can't believe you said that. I mean, is there no line too cliched for you to touch it?
Trevor: No, I'm not proud -- except of you.
Janet: You know what? I really should get up and take a shower.
Trevor: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You don't got to take a shower for me. What time do you have to be at work?
Janet: Well, there's no rush. I just have to look over Enchantment's fourth quarter books. Oh, there's something I forgot to tell you.
Trevor: Why don't we just go upstairs and have a little, you know --
Janet: I want to follow up on this investment tip that I heard about. It's from a board member at Enchantment. He said it was a sure thing.
Trevor: Hey, there's nothing sure in the world except you and me. So how about we go upstairs and find out?
Janet: He said for $50,000 that we could retire in luxury. That would be a great investment.
Trevor: 50,000 What?
Janet: Dollars. What do you think? You want to look into it?

Vanessa: Well, the thought actually never occurred to me.
Opal: Out me and Jack? Oh, yeah. We're as close as two humps on a camel.
Jack: Oh, nicely put.
Opal: And you know the joys of being with a man closer to your own age, don't you, Vanessa, seeing as how you and Palmer are in such a chronological proximity.
Jack: I love it when you talk like that.
Vanessa: Yes, well, Palmer is eternally young.
Opal: Well, Jackson makes me feel reborn, renewed, re-created every time we are together. I'm a whole new woman.
Jack: You're making me sound like a felon.
Opal: Oh, handsome. What do you say? You want to blow this pop stand, go back to my place?
Jack: Can we walk out, or do we have to tango?
Opal: You lead, I'll follow.
Jack: All right. After you, sweet cakes.
Opal: Tootle-oo.
Jack: Tootle-oo.

Vanessa: Oh, gosh, Palmer --
Palmer: What?
Vanessa: You have to do something this instant.
Palmer: About what?
Vanessa: Opal. I cannot have that loudmouth hick coming to our party. It's unthinkable. It --

Hayley: What did he want? What did he say?
Ryan: It's ok. It's ok. I asked him to come here. Ok -- Hayley, after you left last night, I started to remember more about the accident.
Hayley: Like what?
Ryan: I told you I didn't remember everything. Mateo didn't leave me there to die. I mean, he walked away. That -- that happened. But he came back and he pulled me out of the car. And he risked his life to do it.

Palmer: Will you just stop fretting? I will handle Opal.
Vanessa: I certainly hope so, darling. Otherwise, she's going to be strutting across the dance floor in a pink tutu --
Palmer: Now, just stop. I said I would handle it, right?
Vanessa: Thank you, darling.
Palmer: Thank you.
Vanessa: Thank you. Oh, that reminds me. I have to have a word with Robert and the chef.
Palmer: Mm-hmm.

Palmer: All right, stop the lurking. You do have an update, do you not?
Man: We traced the numbers on the cash your wife sent to her companion.
Palmer: Mm-hmm.
Man: He's been enjoying life, I'll tell you that.
Palmer: Just give me the facts. Where is he?
Man: He's been tramping all over the continent -- first-class.
Palmer: Where is he now? Man: He just flew into Miami.
Palmer: Miami? You know where he's staying?
Man: I'm working on it.
Palmer: Well, work harder! Find him!

Trevor: Yeah, I would love to get inside of a good investment. But everything we got, honey, is tied up in the business. Buying Jackson's law firm took all we got. You know that.
Janet: Of course. There'll be other investment opportunities.
Trevor: Yeah. We're already living large, and I got everything I need right here. And what do I want to retire for? I'm just in my prime.
Janet: I know.
Trevor: Yeah. Life is perfect just the way it is now, and that's thanks to you.

Father Tony: Hey.
Mateo: Hey, yeah, have a seat.
Father Tony: Checking out the competition, huh? I'll tell you right now, BJ's coffee is good, but yours is fuerte, si? Con mucho caracter.
Mateo: Yeah, well, I have to take your word for it, huh? I mean, with all your connections and all. My mom sent you, right?
Father Tony: No, actually, I heard about the conflicting stories concerning Ryan Lavery's miraculous rescue. So Hayley got it wrong, huh?
Mateo: Yeah. How'd you know about it?
Father Tony: Well, I'm at the hospital a lot. You know, I hear stuff. You know, Isabella isn't my only source of information. So, you want to tell me where you are with this?
Mateo: I don't know. I mean, anything I say, it's not going to make me look good.
Father Tony: I don't require that you look good. But I'm not going to leave until you talk to me.
Mateo: I guess what's really bothering me is that Hayley was so quick to believe that I could leave him there, you know?
Father Tony: Well, did you ever have a moment when you considered it?
Mateo: What do you mean?
Father Tony: Well, I think it's natural. I mean -- I'm just asking, considering where you were the last time we spoke.
Mateo: And if I did?
Father Tony: I think it might be bothering you.
Mateo: No. Yeah. It's bothering me.
Father Tony: There's so much that you can't forgive? I mean, in yourself and the people you love? Look, Mateo, you can't go through life like this.
Mateo: I know. I guess I'm just like my father -- you know, too macho, too stern.
Father Tony: Actually, I thought this was more like your mother. I mean, you keep things quiet. You let things build up. I mean, you got all this anger stuffed in this closet inside yourself. You know what's going to happen? It's going to turn you bitter. And then you won't be able to see good when it's just looking right at you.
Mateo: Are you saying that it's not supposed to bother me that her boyfriend's going to be the one to clear my name, that he's going to set the record straight? It doesn't change what she believed in the first place, does it, Father?
Father Tony: No, it just -- look, would it hurt so much if you didn't still love her? I mean, would you be so torn up?
Mateo: Well, I mean, I never stopped, you know -- Father Tony: I mean, if you just stop taking shots at each other --
Mateo: How can we? I mean, we're so mad at each other, we can't even sit in the same room together.
Father Tony: No, you're the one that's angry, Mateo.
Mateo: I'm not angry. She's -- she's the one who's angry, not me.
Father Tony: I don't think so. Not about this. I mean, she misjudged you, but it's not the same thing as anger. Look, if you could just sit with it for a little while and think about it as calmly as you can -- pretend, ok? For me? Can you pretend? Just pretend?
Mateo: Ok. I'm sitting here. I'm calm. I'm --'m thinking.
Father Tony: Ok, ok. Let's say -- let's say you're calm and you're thinking. And in a little while, if you actually can do those things, maybe you could come to understand that Hayley, just for that short time, that she might believe this terrible thing about you -- the same way you might believe it about yourself.

Ryan: There was a gas leak. I could smell it. And the wires were down from the utility pole that we hit. And there were sparks everywhere. And I knew someplace way back in my brain that those two things were way too close, but I couldn't move.
Hayley: Ryan, how did you get out of the car?
Ryan: I don't remember. After Mateo walked away, it's like somebody pulled a hood over my eyes. But I could feel and I could still hear, and I smelled the sparks and the gasoline. But I know now that after Mateo walked away, he definitely said he was coming back.
Hayley: Oh, my God.
Ryan: I know. I didn't mean to mislead you, Hayley. I just couldn't remember everything.
Hayley: Ryan, I accused him of leaving you there to die.
Ryan: Look, it's my fault. I don't have all of the facts --
Hayley: No.
Ryan: There were holes in my memory.
Hayley: This is -- it's not your fault. I -- you were in no condition to answer any questions about that.
Hayley: I have to go talk to Mateo I -- I got to go make this right.
