ALL MY CHILDREN

SEPTEMBER 13, 2000

David: Adam, can you hear me?
David: Adam, do you know where you are? ST waves still elevated on every level. Nurse, I want his temperature reading every 10 minutes. You contact me if there are any changes immediately. Thank you.

David: Better stay close, Padre. Your services may be needed.
Liza: David, how is he?
Hayley: Is he awake?
David: Adam is still unconscious.
Mateo: He's going to be ok, though, right?
David: His condition is stable, but critical.
Hayley: But the surgery was successful?
David: Yes, but there are other complications. Your father has developed a condition called endocarditis. It's an infection in the heart's outer layer. Now, we're mega dosing him with antibiotics. We just have to wait to see if they fight the infection.
Hayley: And if they don't?
Liza: Adam's strong. He's a fighter.
Hayley: He was a fighter. Before Uncle Stuart passed away, I used to think he was invincible, but now what's the sense of him fighting when half of him is already dead?

Brooke: Hayley, Mateo, hi. The news said that Adam was injured in some sort of an explosion?
Liza: There was an electrical fire at the Col-Mar Tower. The building collapsed, and Adam was caught in the wreckage.
Brooke: Well, how badly was he hurt?
Hayley: He has severe trauma to his head, which they had to operate on, and now he has some sort of infection or heart failure or something.
Brooke: Oh, Honey. Want to sit down?
Hayley: Yeah.
Brooke: Ok.

Liza: David, does Adam know what's going on around him? He hates hospitals, you know. Maybe it might be nice if I sat with him?
Arlene: I got back as soon as I could. If I know my husband, he'll be bellowing for his breakfast.
David: Arlene, I'm afraid your husband's condition has deteriorated considerably.
Arlene: Well, you know, I just dashed back home to get him a toothbrush and his pajamas and a book that he's reading on the Civil War.
Liza: Curling up with a good book really isn't an option. He's unconscious.
Arlene: You know, I think it's important to stay positive, don't you, Doc? I mean, you're giving him all those wonder drugs. I'm sure he'll pull through.
Liza: Drugs are useless if he doesn't want to get well, Arlene.
Arlene: I'm sure he does. He has everything to live for.
Liza: Not since he married you, he doesn't.
Arlene: You know what, Blondie? I am sick and tired of you blaming me for everything. I love Adam, and he loves me.
Liza: Are you deranged? He married you simply to punish himself for his brother's death. It was his way of trying to commit suicide.
Arlene: I am Adam's wife, not you.
Liza: You take one step in that room and I will put you in intensive care.

Marian: Stuart, are you getting it?
Stuart: Oh! No! This door won't budge! Ow!
Marian: Oh, Darling, did you hurt yourself?
Stuart: No, it's just I'm stuck here! And we can't be stuck because I got to help my brother. He's really in trouble, Marian. I can feel it.
Marian: Well, Stuart, darling, if you can receive messages, maybe you can send them as well.
Stuart: You mean like a telegram?
Marian: Yes, exactly. Why don't you just try to reach out to Adam and tell him you're trying to help him.
Stuart: The thing is he thinks I'm dead.
Marian: Well, so did I. You reached out to me, and it gave me hope. Why can't you try to reach out to your brother?
Stuart: Ok, well, it's worth a try. You know, I need something of Adam's to focus on.
Marian: Ok.
Marian: Stuart? Does this have any memories?
Stuart: Our last night in Pigeon Hollow! And we went over to Mesger's Field. He had a bat and this ball. And he tossed it up in the air, and he hit it over the harvest moon. And he said, "that's where I'm going, Stuart. I'm going right over the moon. And you're coming with me." "That's where I'm going, Stuart. Right over the moon. And you're coming with me."

Adam: Stuart?

Stuart: The feeling that I had that my brother was in trouble -- it's not as strong now.
Marian: Well, then maybe he's out of danger now, Stuart.
Stuart: Or maybe he's gone where I can't follow. No, no. There is no such place. When we were kids, when I had a nightmare, Adam would wake up with his heart beating a million miles an hour, just the same as mine.
Marian: No, Stuart, Adam's heart is not the same as yours. Adam's heart is rotten to the core.
Stuart: No. The core of Adam's heart is a little tiny piece of gold. It's just really hard to find it, that's all.
Marian: How can you say that, darling? He drugged me to make it look like I was cheating on you, he tried to destroy our marriage, and then he lied to you.
Stuart: I know. I begged him to tell me the truth.

Stuart: As long as you swear that you didn't set out to hurt Marian, then I have to believe you. I'll take your word for it because you're my brother and you -- you're right, you always took care of me and you always saved me from the bullies and the kids that teased me, and you always knew what was best, always. Then you know that Marian is what's best for me. She loves me as much as you do, Adam. You wouldn't want to take that away from me, would you?
Adam: No. No, never.
Stuart: I believed you Adam because I needed to believe in him. And you know, when I looked way down deep inside you, you know what I saw? I saw you and me starting off in this world together. I saw us holding hands, holding on to each other when they took Mom away in that pine box. That's got to be worth a lot more than power and money. I realized when I -- when I looked deep down inside of you, you know what I saw? I saw me looking back.
Adam: Oh, I wish to God I could see that. When I look inside me, I don't see anything at all.
Stuart: That's because you don't love yourself as much as I love you.
Adam: Don't, Stuart.
Stuart: Adam, I'll never stop loving you, and I'll never give up on you, either.
Adam: Promise?

Marian: Stuart, darling, what is it?
Stuart: I broke my promise. I gave up on my brother.

Adam's voice: I admit it. I set up Marian. I didn't know about the drugs, but that's no excuse.
Adam: I did it because I was afraid of losing you to Marian, and that hurt. So I hurt her. I know it was wrong, and I'm sorry. Please understand. You're my brother. You know me best than I know myself. You know that I can love you better than anyone else can. And Marian was trying to turn you against . I couldn't allow that to hap--
Stuart: Stop it. Stop it! Just stop finding excuses. You can't make it right, so just quit trying. What you did -- what you did to us -- it had nothing to do with love, Adam.
Adam: You don't have to forgive me. You can call me names, you can spit on me, but tell me, promise me that you don't hate me. I'm begging you, Stuart. Say it, please, plea, that you don't hate me.

[Monitor beeps]

[Beeping slows]

Arlene: You divorced Adam. You left him. You have no right to be here.
Liza: Adam is the father of my child. I have every right to be here.
David: All right, ladies. We don't want to do this here.
Eliot: Arlene, why don't we go to the chapel and pray?
Arlene: Rev, why don't you get your hands off me. My place is by my husband's side.
Vanessa: Arlene, dear. I think a short break is maybe what the doctor ordered, isn't it, David?
David: I'll page you if there are any changes in Adam's condition.

Nurse: Dr. Hayward?
David: Yes, coming.

Eliot: Long night.
Mateo: Yeah.
Hayley: The longest.
Mateo: Do you need
a soda or something?
Hayley: Sure.
Mateo: Yeah.
Brooke: I'll come with you.
Mateo: Ok.
Brooke: Ok.

Eliot: Mind if I sit? This is tough. I know.
Hayley: Not if you tell me my father's going to be ok.
Eliot: I wish I could.
Hayley: You answer to a higher power, right.
Eliot: We all do. You love your dad a lot.
Hayley: Explain something to me. My stepfather, Harry, was a great person, wonderful man, and he's gone. And my Uncle Stuart, who was an angel among us here on earth, is gone. And now my father is hanging on by a thread, and I'm expected to walk the walk, you know, and accept the things that I cannot change and --
Eliot: God, he has a plan, for each of us.
Hayley: Between you and me, I think that God's plans are sometimes very cruel.
Eliot: Between you and me, sometimes so do I. But then he'll shed some light on the subject, and we get to see the big picture.
Hayley: Do you think that he hears my prayers?
Eliot: He's listening, hard. I'm living proof.

Liza: Mateo?
Mateo: Yeah?
Liza: Would you do me a favor?
Mateo: Yeah, name it.
Brooke: Here, I'll take it to Hayley.
Liza: I can't find my mother, and Arlene said something about how she was going to go to Pigeon Hollow because she was looking for some childhood -- I don't know -- something of Stuart's, and I can't find her anywhere.
Mateo: I'll make some calls, ok?
Liza: Thanks.

Dixie: Listen, Sweetie, you sure you don't want to just go home, catch some Zs, relax?
Tad: I'll take you myself.
Junior: I'm not tired. I want to see my dad.
Hayley: So do I.
Hayley: Excuse me, Dr. Hayward. Junior wants to see his dad.
David: Yeah, I think we can accommodate that. Come in, Junior. Just don't stay too long, all right? Your dad really needs his rest. Come on.
Dixie: Thank you.
Junior: Dad? It's me. It's your son, Adam Jr. Can I be alone with him?

Junior: Dad? I have to tell you something. You have to hear me. When I said that you weren't my dad, that you might as well be dead, I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it, Dad. And I don't want you to die, because I love you.

Tad: It's going to be ok.
Junior: It's all my fault. I let him down. He told me to walk away, just forget about him. I acted like he wasn't my dad anymore, because I was so upset, I was so angry! And now he's going to die, and it's all my fault.
Tad: It's not your fault, ok? It's not. Hey, it's not your fault. That's ridiculous. It's nobody's fault. Look at me. Look here for a second, ok? Look, your father is going to pull through. I know it. He looks a little worse for wear right now, but you and I both know he's too stubborn to give up.
Junior: He didn't even move. All those things I said in there didn't matter because he can't even hear me. He thinks I don't love him. What if he thinks no one does?
Tad: He knows you love him, ok? And he loves you very much, and he's going to make it, I promise you. Everything is going to work out all right. Come here.

Woman: Ms. Colby, I'm sorry to intrude, but the phones have been ringing off the hook all day at the office, reporters wanting to know the story behind the explosion, and there are rumors circulating that --
Tad: Excuse me. I think we should take this someplace else.
Liza: Yeah, course.
Tad: I'll make this fast.
Dixie: Ok, ok.
Tad: You hang in there. I'll be right back.

Dixie: You know, Sweetie, Dr. Hayward once told me that unconscious people can hear what you say.
Junior: He didn't act like he heard me.
David: Dixie, would you mind if I spoke with Junior in private? Is that all right, Junior? Great. You know, I think I have a pretty good idea of what you're going through right now. When I was just a little younger than you, my father went through something, and he wasn't acting the same. He was sad, depressed, all the time. And I thought that it was something that I had done, that it was my fault, that I had disappointed him in some way. Even when I tried to reach out to him, he pushed me away. Now, obviously that made me mad, and I stopped, you know, watching him shave in the morning, I called him "Sir" instead of Dad --
Junior: What happened?
David: Nothing, because my father could see right through me. He knew what was happening inside of my heart. He knew how much I loved him even though I didn't act it. And that's why now I know that the reason why my father was pushing me away was because -- well, he was trying to protect me. And that's because he loved me very much.
Junior: I told my dad just now that I love him.
David: He knows, Junior. I promise you. He knows.

Arlene: Why'd you drag me here, Vanessa?
Vanessa: Well, this is a chapel. I thought you might want to give thanks.
Arlene: My husband could be dying.
Vanessa: Exactly.
Arlene: Do you think I want Adam dead?
Vanessa: Well, you would be a very rich widow.
Arlene: I didn't marry him for his money.
Vanessa: You were simply done in by his silvery hair and his winning smile.
Arlene: Believe it or not, I love him.
Vanessa: Happens to be a feeling he does not return.
Arlene: Maybe not, but we're a team, and I can't let him die.
Vanessa: Well, there's nothing you can do to save him, Arlene.
Arlene: I am going to go home and get Stuart. I'm going to give him a reason to live.
Vanessa: Oh, really? You do that, and your party is over. Arlene, my dear, you have been behind bars before. Are you really willing to go back to prison? Because it could happen -- a hit-and-run, you know?
Arlene: I'm not going to listen to this.
Vanessa: Arlene! Arlene, stop! If Adam lives, you will end up with absolutely nothing, my dear. Now, please, do you really want to go back to that carpet mill in Georgia and, I mean, spend your nights with an endless parade of small-town losers?
Arlene: I guess -- I guess I could see if he would pull through on his own.
Vanessa: So, you won't do anything that, well, both of us might regret.
Arlene: I'll go back, and I'll wait. I'll wait.

Dixie: David?
David: Yeah?
Dixie: I heard what you said to my son. You threw him a lifeline. You showed him a part of yourself that you don't let most people see.
David: Dixie, you're making way too much out of this.
Dixie: Just shut up and let me say thank you, ok?

Vanessa: David, in your professional opinion, what are Adam's chances?
David: What, are you getting some cheap, vicarious thrill out of all of this, Vanessa?
Vanessa: I am simply here to support a friend in an hour of need.
David: Yeah, right, like two vultures circling over a picnic. Stay the hell away from Adam and his family.

Adam: Stuart, don't call me that. You and I are brothers. We are brothers forever. We have the same DNA, we have the same past, the same memories. You remember I took your spelling tests, and you showed me the beauty in a blade of grass. I was your safety, and you were my heart. Nobody ever hurt you when I was around
. Stuart: Adam, don't you know that the only person that can hurt me is you? You! Don't you understand, I'm not afraid of the world. I'm not afraid of a dare or somebody calling me dumb, or even a sock in the jaw. The only bully who ever really scared me was you. You are my only real enemy.
Adam: Oh, Stuart, that can't -- that can't be true. Well, if it is true, then be Stuart. Be the man who always forgives, the guy who turns the other cheek. You remember, you dug the grave for rusty? You gathered the flowers. You held my hand while you read your poem. Remember "All Dogs Go To Heaven"? You forgave me then. Forgive me now. Don't leave me standing by the side of an empty grave.
Stuart: It's your grave, Adam. You dug it.
Adam: Stuart, just tell me that you don't hate me.
Stuart: No, I could never hate my brother. No matter how much he hurt me, how much you hurt the people I love, I could never hate my brother, no matter how much I tried to. The fact is I do hate you. I hate you! So we can't be brothers anymore. We're just never going to be brothers again.

[Monitor alarm sounds] David: His heart rate's decelerating. Respiration's labored. Fever's spiked to 105. All right, we're going to cool him down, folks. Get an ice blanket, increase his oxygen, and open a line on the vancomycin IV now. Come on, move it!
Arlene: Oh, my God. Oh, my God, what's happening?

[Stuart yells]

Stuart: Oh! Oh.
Marian: Stuart. Oh, my God, darling, what is it? What is it?
Stuart: It's -- it's Adam.
Marian: Stuart? Ouch. Darling, are you all right?
Stuart: No, not it's not --
Marian: Are you in pain?
Stuart: No, it's not me, it's Adam! He's getting weaker. I can feel it.
Marian: Stuart, please, break the connection with Adam right now. Please just break it. You're scaring the hell out of me.
Stuart: Shh, shh, shh, shh. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Dear Lord, dear Lord, please, you brought me back to Marian. Please just let me out of here so I can find Adam and help him. Just one more miracle. Please?

Arlene: Dr. Hayward, what's happening? Is Adam dying?
David: The antibiotics aren't working.
Arlene: What? Well, give him something stronger.
David: There isn't anything. His system's shutting down. We've done everything possible.
Arlene: He needs a reason to live, something to come back to.

Hayley: Dad, don't you leave me. Don't do it. I know you miss Uncle Stuart, but you can't be with him, not yet, Dad. Oh, God!

Vanessa: Arlene --
Arlene: I can't do it. I can't let him die. I have the power to save him.
Vanessa: Well, you're right, dear. You do have the power. You have the choice. You or Adam. Your life or Adam's. Come on, now. I want you to sit down here, relax. I'm going to get some nice soothing tea. Here.

Mateo: Hi. What are you up to?
Arlene: This isn't how I wanted it to end.
Mateo: Hey, listen, I heard you talking to Vanessa. If you can do something to save their father, what are you waiting for, huh?
Vanessa: W-- what?

David: Reverend, this is where my job ends and yours begins.
Eliot: I'm sorry. I know how hard this is, but it's time to say good-bye to Adam.

Liza: Please don't leave. Colby needs her father. And Hayley and Junior and Skye, they need you, and -- and Stuart, he would never want you to leave like this. I -- I need you. I -- I love you. I love you, Adam. Please. Please.

Eliot: Brooke, are you all right?
Brooke: How do you do it? I mean, part of your job is dealing with death and offering comfort. How do you deal with so much loss?
Eliot: I use my faith to help ease the pain. But I can't take it away. People have to look within themselves for healing. You taught me that, Brooke.
Brooke: Me?
Eliot: That day that you opened up to me about your daughter's death. It made me realize that I wa-- well, I was powerless to change what happened to your little girl. I can wish you peace and pray that it finds you, but in the end, you have to find your own way, and I have to do the same.
Brooke: Adam was so wonderful to me when Laura died. I don't think I would have gotten through it all without him. He was so strong. It hurts to believe it's the same man lying in that bed. I feel like I've spent so much of my life saying good-bye.
Eliot: I wish that we didn't have to, that I'd --
Brooke: I know.

I know. Tad: Is something wrong?
Mateo: It's crazy, man --
Tad: What's crazy?
Mateo: I overheard Arlene. She said she had the power to save Adam, that she couldn't let him die, and I --
Tad: Arlene is half in the bag.
Mateo: Not this time.
Tad: Look, Adam definitely needs a miracle, but Arlene as an angel of mercy? I don't think so.

Vanessa: Arlene, stop! You stop and think what you are doing.
Arlene: I know what I am doing! I am doing the right thing for the first time in my miserable life!
Vanessa: Do you think -- do you really think that someone like Stuart Chandler can save Adam's life?
Arlene: Yes, I do, with all my heart.
Vanessa: No, Arlene, Adam already has one foot in the grave, my dear. He'll be dead by the time you get back to the hospital.
Arlene: Well, I have to try.
Vanessa: No! Oh! Jeez. I'll tell you, some people don't know when they've got it made. Then again, the shock of seeing Stuart might just kill Adam anyway.

[Footsteps]

Stuart: There's somebody there.
Marian: Oh, my God. Thank God!
Arlene: Stuart, come with me. We don't have much time.
Stuart: It's Adam.

Junior: Is he in any pain?
David: No, Junior. He's not suffering. We're losing him. We're losing him.

Stuart: Adam? It's me, Stuart.
Adam: Stuart? I'm coming.
Stuart: Adam, don't go. Come back. I'm here. Come back! Adam. Adam, it's me, Stuart.
Adam: Stuart. It's really you, isn't it?
Stuart: Yeah. Adam, I said so many mean things to you, and I didn't mean any of them. And you will always be my safety, and I will always be your heart.
Adam: Stuart. Stuart.
Stuart: Adam, you're my brother, and I love you. And I will never, ever leave you again.

ON THE NEXT - - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Erica: Dimitri?
Dimitri: It's me, Erica. Oh.

Marian: She has to pay for what she did, Stuart, and you're the only one who can make her pay.

Adam: There's one more person I'd like to see.
