ALL MY CHILDREN

SEPTEMBER 3, 2001

Ryan: Shot of tequila and a draft.
Ryan: Run me a tab, will you?
Mia: Not tonight. Tonight it's on me.

Jake: Yes?
Greenlee: How do you know something happened with Leo?
Jake: You're just going to talk all night, aren't you?
Greenlee: Why do you want me if you know I still want Leo?
Jake: I'm sorry, is there a question in there somewhere?
Greenlee: Jake, just answer me.
Jake: Why? You have all the answers.
Greenlee: I do not.
Jake: Yeah, and I love it when you don't because you get all frazzled and annoyed. I like it.
Greenlee: What is happening to you?
Jake: What, what? What? I'm just the same as I always am.
Greenlee: Not much.
Jake: Why can't you accept the fact that I want you? And I really don't give a rat's rear where your head is with Leo.
Greenlee: Jake, don't you have any pride?
Jake: Greenlee --

Leo: You're giving me back the wedding ring and you're ordering me off to Greenlee? And the reason for this is what?
Laura: Come on, Leo. I may be naive, but you got to give me credit for something.
Leo: Oh, don't pull that with me, Laura!
Laura: No, I saw you. And I saw her, and I'm not a fool. Whoever would've looked out the window tonight would've seen the same thing.
Leo: Which is what?
Laura: That you wanted her! You wanted her tonight, Leo, and I -- I can't go through this with you every night. It stinks.
Leo: Laura, please --
Laura: No, no. Really, Leo, we made love or something, and it -- it was horrible. And you say it's fine and then you disappear off into the night.
Leo: I was outside our front door getting some air!
Laura: Leo, you were having an encounter with your ex-fiancée! It looked like something that belonged in a late-night cable access movie. You want me to pretend didn't see it? You want me to pretend that I don't know you hate making love with me and that you want to make love with Greenlee?
Leo: What am I supposed to do now, Laura? Can you please tell me that? Would you like me to get down on my hands an knees and beg your forgiveness for something that didn't even happen? You see, that's the thing. I didn't have sex with Greenlee. I didn't kiss -- I didn't even touch Greenlee! I talked to Greenlee, who showed up on her own outside my front door. That was my great sin. I was in a courtyard in the heat when I got an unexpected visit from a woman that I used to date. Go ahead, rip my head off! Knock yourself out, Laura! Come on!

Adam: You can't be serious, Liza.
Liza: Oh, baby, I am deadly serious.
Adam: But it's not legal.

[Liza laughs]

Liza: From you?
Adam: You want -- you want full custody of our daughter while we're still married, living under this roof? That's preposterous!
Liza: Well, I don't see it that way. And I think a judge with a slightly higher moral code than Kaye Campobello very well might agree with me.
Adam: Liza, I know -- I know you're very upset, and of course I understand.
Liza: No, no, no, don't play this emotional card with me because I will get on a plane with my daughter so fast it will make your head spin.
Adam: You call me a control freak? Listen to what you're asking. No, no, cut that. Strike that. Demanding.
Liza: You know, I would've thought that you would've jumped at this opportunity.
Adam: Jumped at what? The opportunity to have you keep me at arm's length from my own daughter? Of losing you?
Liza: The other option was me leaving and a stack of divorce papers ending up on your desk in the morning. If you want to stay married to me, you're going to sign whatever my lawyers draw up. You're going to relinquish all rights to the way that Colby is raised.
Adam: For God's sake, how are you ever going to enforce this?
Liza: Actually, you know, it's very simple. Because if you don't agree, I'm going to go to the family courts and I'm going to tell them that you slept with a judge to help your son beat a drug rap. Clear?
Liza: I don't think you want a public airing of your latest unethical act in a lifetime of unethical acts, now, do you?
Adam: Don't patronize me, Liza. Of course that's not what I want. I don't want it for you, I don't want it for Colby, I don't want it for J.R. for God's sake, I thought sleeping with Ryan Lavery would be payback enough for you.
Liza: I'm beginning to regret not getting on the plane with Colby an hour ago.
Adam: Liza, I don't -- I don't understand.
Liza: No --
Adam: Help me. Help me.
Liza: You can't. You don't. You can't understand.
Adam: Why? Why? Why can't I understand?
Liza: Because what I want from you and expect from you as a husband and as the father of my child is inexplicable to you! That you are blind to basic human decency. And in your own disgusting behavior, that all issues of loyalty and devotion are completely lost on you!
Adam: I did what I did because of -- of an intense loyalty and devotion to my family.
Liza: Well, does that keep you warm at night? Because that's all you're going to get unless, of course, Judge Kaye is still interested.
Adam: Well, I'm not interested in Judge Kaye. I never was.
Liza: You know, do you know what I was feeling that day that I fainted on the yacht? I mean, I couldn't breathe. I felt my chest had an anvil on it and my body was all seized up, and do you know why?
Adam: Guilt?
Liza: What?
Adam: I just caught you in bed with Ryan Lavery.
Liza: You're not going to compare that to what you did with the judge.
Adam: No. Oh, no, no, absolutely not. I understand the differences between them very clearly. No, what I did had nothing to do with lust or passion or revenge. What I did had everything to do with a business transaction.
Liza: Oh, you -- if I was thinner-skinned, I'd be on oxygen because this is an unreal conversation.
Adam: You had sex with Ryan Lavery.
Liza: You really believe that this whole thing is about sex, don't you?
Adam: Well, isn't it?
Liza this has never had anything to do with sex. It never, ever did.

Jake: Tell me something, Greenlee. What does pride have to do with this?
Greenlee: What if I go to bed with you now?
Jake: Yeah? Your point?
Greenlee: Jake, what if I use having sex with you to forget about Leo? That won't make you feel bad?
Jake: You're so way off base about me. You're like -- you're like 99% off base.
Greenlee: How so?
Jake: Because you're utterly clueless.
Greenlee: Ha! About what?
Jake: You live in this clueless little world of yours because you only think about yourself.
Greenlee: That is so unfair. I thought about you, didn't I? I didn't run off with you and sleep with you to forget about Leo. I was really honest with you.
Jake: You don't even live in the same universe as honesty, Greenlee.
Greenlee: Jake --
Jake: And I like it. Actually, I think it's charming. It's quite compelling.
Greenlee: You're just mad because I said you didn't have any pride. That's why you're being so mean to me.
Jake: You know, I'm probably nicer to you than anyone ever has been, and you don't recognize that.
Greenlee: Jake, you're making my brain hurt.
Jake: Greenlee, listen to me for a second. I want your undivided attention for the very first time. What you want or you don't want, or how you feel or you don't feel about Leo means absolutely nothing to me because this is the thing -- when I look at you, you're like this -- this perfect rose that's flawless. And I think you're so beautiful, and I'm very attracted to you. And when I make love with you, I get completely lost in you. So if you want to go on believing that every time we make love that you're using me, just knock yourself out. But I know what I'm doing with you, and I know why I'm doing it. And maybe someday you'll be able to come out of your head long enough to look at who I am and maybe try to figure out what I'm doing without and what it all means to me. Maybe you have some idea as to where my realm of pride is. So, having said all that, why don't we stick to what we know and what we do best.
Greenlee: You're very deep.
Jake: Not very.

Laura: You think an apology is going to make me feel better? You want to be with another woman besides me.
Leo: What, are you -- are you sending me off, giving me permission to be with Greenlee? What the hell is this, Laura?
Laura: It's what you want.
Leo: No, it's what you think I want! You don't know what the hell I want because you're too afraid to ask! You live in constant fear of my ex, who, if you remember, I didn't marry. I married you. Which doesn't matter because the bottom line is you have no faith in me, and I got to tell you, that makes me so mad -- whoa, hey, hey, hey, hey. Sit down, sit down.

Bartender: Man, you must be a masochist.
Ryan: Yeah? Why is that?
Bartender: I never seen a guy turn down a woman like that.
Ryan: Well, there's always a first.

[Juke box plays]

Singer: The sun went down in Harlem

Mia: You know, if it's not too much out of your way, I was wondering -- what kind of a deal did you get on that hog?
Ryan: What, are you thinking of buying one with your inheritance?
Mia: Oh, I don't need to inherit anything, see, because I am on a roll.
Ryan: You keep flashing coin like that in a place like this and they're going to be rolling you into an ER.
Mia: You know, if my sister and her type are the kind of broads who gets your straight pipes revving, you're not going to find her in here on two-for-Tuesdays.
Ryan: Yeah, well, it's not Tuesday.
Mia: Well, whatever. You're not going to get that kind of luck being here.
Ryan: This used to be a great place to be alone. Ahem -- used to be.
Mia: Well, don't let me keep you.
Ryan: Ahh.
Mia: I'm off to find my sister and her wallet.
Ryan: Not a good idea.
Mia: Hmm?
Ryan: I wouldn't be asking Liza for anything, especially money. Not when she's having it out with her husband.
Mia: Wait a minute. The maid told me she was out of town with her kid. What, is she back? Ryan, do you know where Liza is?
Ryan: And what if I do?
Mia: Well, you know I'm looking for her. You know how much this means to me. Why wouldn't you tell me?
Ryan: Gee, Mia, I don't know. But I can tell you one thing -- leave me the hell --

[Mia kisses Ryan]

Leo: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to push you that way.
Laura: No, I started it. You were just telling me the truth.
Leo: I just --
Laura: No, it's ok. I -- I can't expect you to not have feelings or to sit on the ones you do have because you're afraid of saying anything that would send me into one of these episodes. It's not fair. And I can't keep bringing up Greenlee and making up versions of what I think is going on with you guys.
Leo: Laura, there's nothing going on with me and Greenlee.
Laura: But you have to stop backing off your real feelings because you're afraid of what'll happen to me if you tell me about it.
Leo: Laura, there's something else going on. No, no, no, hey, come on. It's just -- it's way beyond the Greenlee thing. Come on, please, just say it.
Laura: Why did you stop telling me you love me?

Adam: When is something sexual not about sex? Hmm?
Liza: For God's sake, Adam.
Adam: What? What?
Liza: It's like -- it's like being the wife of a husband who has gotten sober after years of abuse.
Adam: You've lost me.
Liza: Well, just pay attention. Let's say you were a husband who was drinking or took drugs or whatever it was. And you stopped, and I was the long-suffering wife who had really believed and thought that her life had changed because her husband had stopped drinking. It was like I got sucked into this belief that somehow it was different, that you'd changed.
Adam: I have changed.
Liza: No, you haven't. I keep telling you I need to trust you. I keep telling you what I need, and you ignore me. Like going to Hayward when you did and then sleeping with this judge so you could keep your son's nose clean.
Adam: Come on, let's just drop this. I don't get it. I don't get it. I'm not an alcoholic and I'm not an addict.
Liza: No. Your drug is different. Your drug is -- is more destructive. Actually, you have two. You have power and you have control. And right now, you are in the middle of a very deep addiction.
Adam: I just -- your analogy just doesn't speak to me. I'm sorry.
Liza: It's like these issues of power and control make me want to take my daughter and run away from you forever. And that doesn't just make me sad. It makes me frightened. Frightened for you and for her.
Adam: No, this -- this just isn't right, Liza.
Liza: No, no, it isn't right. It's dangerous. You are a danger to me and to my daughter, and I can't let that happen. I won't.
Adam: How can you say that I am a danger to my daughter?
Liza: Look what you did to your son.
Adam: Because I love him.
Liza: No, you say that, but you say that to justify your own corrupt behavior. It's a lame excuse.
Adam: Oh, please.
Liza: "No, I did this for my son because I love my son."
Adam: Yes.
Liza: You did this for JR because he got stuck and you wanted to manipulate the situation. You saw a chance to seize control and you took it!
Adam: No, no, no, that's completely wrong! I did it because I wanted to give my son a second chance, to keep David Hayward, a vicious adult, from trashing the rest of his life before it ever began.
Liza: Real love, real commitment as a parent would have meant that you would've allowed J.R., no matter how much it hurt your heart, to have suffered the consequences of his addiction.
Adam: The consequences of his addiction, including ruining his reputation, never getting into a decent college, ruining the rest --
Liza: Suppose what you've done is encourage his drug use. "Daddy cleaned up one mistake. Why can't he do it again?" What if you have encouraged a lifetime of addiction, Adam? He becomes like you, Hayley, because of you, Adam, the biggest enabler of them all?
Adam: No. That won't happen.
Liza: No? And I have your guarantee on that? Because I don't want that anywhere near my daughter.

Leo: That's -- that's not true. I haven't stopped saying that I love you.
Laura: Actually, you did. I can't put a date on it, but in the past week or so, your whole attitude has shifted. Something's changed. Something's set in, and I feel like -- like you look trapped.
Leo: I'm not trapped. And that's not fair.
Laura: Leo, you're a good guy and you really want to do the right thing. But you don't feel it inside and it's ripping you apart.
Leo: I don't -- I don't know what to say to that, Laura.
Laura: Well, there's not much to say.
Leo: Look, I'm doing the best that I can to make a life for us.
Laura: But it's not the life you want.
Leo: Who cares what I want, you know? What about what you want?
Laura: I know what I want. I feel like you measure everything with me. You measure how much you touch me. You measure how much time you spend with me, how much you pay attention to me and the time that we do spend together. I feel like you measure everything you say.
Leo: So why is it so bad that I'm careful with what I say to you? I'm not pretending anything. What I feel for you is real, Laura.
Laura: But, Leo, when you're in love, you don't think about those things, and you definitely don't think about what you s to the other person and you don't stop saying "I love you" unless your feelings change. Leo, if you loved me, the words would just come. If you really loved me, it would show.

Greenlee: You're so complicated.
Jake: Greenlee, you once told me that I was boring and predictable.
Greenlee: Well, I hadn't slept with you yet. And it's not just that. It's -- it's the way that you take care of me and what a good friend you've been. But in some ways, I don't really know who you are.
Jake: I got to preserve the mystery.
Greenlee: Jake, you always tell me to open up and tell you stuff, and I do. In fact, you've been the best friend I could ever have.
Jake: Gee, thanks.
Greenlee: But now we're lovers, too, and it's weird telling the person you're sleeping with about your feelings for your ex and then --
Jake: Make love?
Greenlee: Make love to help you forget but not have strings attached.
Jake: You're waiting for me to tell you what the catch is, aren't you?
Greenlee: Yes. That's it.
Jake: What would you say if I said there wasn't one?
Greenlee: I wouldn't believe it, I don't think. There's always a catch.
Jake: Well, you don't know me.
Greenlee: I just said that.
Jake: Why don't you let me prove what's possible?
Greenlee: For me?
Jake: For me, too. I mean, I'm not selfless in this. I told you that.
Greenlee: You like being with me.
Jake: I love being with you.
Greenlee: I can tell.
Jake: So why does that make you so nervous?
Greenlee: I'm not sure exactly, but it does. But I can learn.
Jake: Teach an old dog new tricks.
Greenlee: Who you calling old?
Jake: Not you. No way.
Greenlee: See, that was really nice.

Ryan: What -- what the hell are you doing?
Mia: Just kiss me, you idiot. Play along so the guy at the door doesn't see my face.
Ryan: Uh, he's right here.
Mia: Hi.
Man: You cheated me out of my money.
Ryan: Yeah, well, you know, she does that.
Mia: Ryan, don't provoke him.
Man: I want it now, or you won't look so pretty.
Ryan: Don't you ever talk to the woman like that in front of me, you pathetic --
Man: What d you call me?
Ryan: I called you a pathetic little --
Mia: Ryan, half the guys at the bar are going to back him.
Ryan: Mia, you want to back off, please? I came in here for a drink, but I had no idea I was going to get so lucky.
Mia: Don't live out your little fantasy boy --
Man: Just shut up! Give me the cash.
Ryan: Do I look scared to you? Do I look like I'm not going to kick your stupid, ugly face all over this parking lot?
Man: You know, you got a big mouth!
Ryan: Hey, man. Let me see what you got, all right? And remember, I'm not a little girl that you're going to be throwing around.

[Motorcycle engine revs]

Man: Ok, this is going to be great.
Ryan: What the -- Mia!

Liza: I thought that I was so strong. But I forgot that loving you makes me blind to the truth, and I can't live like that.
Adam: Liza, I'm sorry. I am so sorry that I've hurt you. But I know we can make it past this.
Liza: I'm not strong enough, Adam, and you can't stop yourself.
Adam: No, of course -- what are you saying? You're giving up on us?
Liza: I'm -- I'm saying that I still love you and it complicates everything.
Adam: As long as that's there, we can build on that.
Liza: Not without a universal shift of epic proportion.
Adam: But if we still love each other --
Liza: No, it's -- it's not enough for me or for my daughter.
Adam: I think it is. I think it is. In fact, I believe that. I really believe that.
Liza: Adam, this is not a whim, this is not an impulse. This is life and death.
Adam: Right. All right, all right, all right. You think we should live in this house together -- you and me and Colby -- except I'm not allowed to be a father and I'm not allowed to be a husband.
Liza: My terms, my rules, or we can quit right now.
Adam: I'm surprised after everything you've said that you think there's any chance for us at all.
Liza: I still love you, and I want to see if I can make my marriage work on my terms.
Adam: Yeah, what are those terms again?
Liza: That I have control over raising my daughter, Colby. That I supervise any time J.R. is here with the two of us. And if I find that you're working behind my back -- and we also will go to couples therapy.
Adam: Oh, your punishing me.
Liza: I'm trying to live with an addict, and I still love him.
Adam: Is that it?
Liza: Isn't that enough?
Adam: Mm-hmm. I don't know what to say.
Liza: Say yes, or I leave and I get on a plane to anywhere.

Laura: You look hurt.
Leo: I'm not. I just -- I wasn't expecting things to go the way they did tonight, I guess.
Laura: I'm sorry. I just can't live each day wondering if you're going to leave me.
Leo: I hate that you feel that way, Laura. I wish that there was something I could do to make you feel more secure about us.
Laura: But it's not about what you can do. It's about what you feel. And when I see you with Greenlee -- God, I hate this about myself -- but I look at your face when you look at her, and there's something there that you never show me.
Leo: Laura, listen to me. I'm with you, ok? I'm not with Greenlee.
Laura: I guess that's not enough. Look, I may be inexperienced, but I'm not a jerk. I know you married me because I was dying.
Leo: Not "because," no --
Laura: No, no, no. Leo, let's just be honest, ok? This never would've happened if I didn't get sick, if I didn't need a transplant. We -- we both know that's true.
Leo: Ok.
Laura: But I'm not sick now. And, I mean, I do have these episodes, but I'm not about to die.
And still we're in trouble. Leo: So what are you saying, Laura?
Laura: So I'm asking you if you believe we can make it.

[Motorcycle engine revs]

Mia: God.

[Engine shuts off]

Ryan: What the hell were you trying to do?
Mia: You know, you are a lousy passenger, by the way.
Ryan: Wasn't supposed to be the passenger. You stole my bike.
Mia: I was keeping a bunch of drunks from making your head into pudding.
Ryan: Please. You want me to believe that you were helping me? You took my keys.
Mia: And you ran after me like I knew you would when you heard me revving up the engine. I was trying to keep you from your own overactive testosterone party.
Ryan: Nobody rides this bike but me, you understand?
Mia: Yeah, well, I just did. And that baby needs an oil change and I'd get on it if I were you.
Ryan: What are you doing being in debt to a guy like that anyway?
Mia: I'm not in debt. I'm not in debt. I just sat in on a poker game. What's the big deal?
Ryan: You tell me. You're not very good at it.
Mia: Like hell I am. I cleaned his clock.
Ryan: Straight up?
Mia: That's right.
Ryan: Well, then why did he come after you? I mean, there's a code of honor with these guys. If they lose without any cheating, they just have to accept it.
Mia: Yeah, well, apparently that code of honor doesn't apply to women who are 600 pounds lighter than them and look like they could be strong-armed. And what do you care anyway? It's not like we're dealing with a bunch of priests here. We're talking about a bunch of drunken, gambling morons.
Ryan: All right, one question.
Mia: Sure.
Ryan: What are you doing playing poker with a bunch of drunken morons?
Mia: I love humiliating men.
Ryan: Well, I'm really starting to believe that you mean that.
Mia: Well, good for you.
Ryan: Well, I didn't like it. I didn't like any of it.
Mia: You didn't mind the kiss.
Ryan: Yeah, actually, I did.
Mia: Bull.
Ryan: What are you talking about? I tried to throw you across the bar.
Mia: Yeah, yeah, you were just pretending.
Ryan: Would you please stop telling me what I'm thinking?
Mia: Would you stop treating me like I'm some teenager that you have to discipline?
Ryan: Well, you got to stop acting like this, Mia. You're going to get yourself hurt.
Mia: I can't get hurt.
Ryan: Yeah, why's that?
Mia: Because I have been more hurt than you will ever, ever know! And playing poker with a bunch of idiots isn't about getting hurt. It's about me living my life the way I want. I'm walking. Get your oil changed.
Ryan: Mia, wait. Don't go.
Ryan: Well, if you wanted to keep all that money you won, why did you go back to a bar like that by yourself?
Mia: I don't know.
Ryan: I guess you're tougher than most girls, but I --
Mia: Oh, "girls"?
Ryan: Don't get all PC on me. I'm just saying you're tougher, but what did you want to do, take on the whole bar by yourself?
Mia: Well, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. Maybe I was just lonely.
Ryan: And you wanted those guys as company.
Mia: I found you.
Ryan: Yeah, well, you and I don't really get along, do we?
Mia: True. Well, you know, I won some cash and I just wanted to go to a bar and have a drink. And maybe if there was some nice guy there, maybe I'd buy him a drink, too. But, as usual, no one around that fell into the nice guy category. Right?
Mia: By the way, you know, you are some piece of work not telling me that you'd seen Liza.
Ryan: I didn't know I was supposed to.
Mia: You don't care.
Ryan: Unbelievable.

[Motorcycle engine starts]

Ryan: Looks like it's just you and me, baby.

Jake: Well, I got to go to the hospital.
Greenlee: Emergency?
Jake: Yeah, that's the only reason they'd call me at this hour.
Greenlee: Medicine is your real girlfriend, isn't it?
Jake: Well, I guess. She's been faithful.
Greenlee: Hmm. Is your career the most important thing in your life?
Jake: Yeah. Yeah, it is right now.
Greenlee: I can't say that about mine. I wish I could.
Jake: Hmm. Well, maybe you can someday.
Greenlee: You save lives. I save dry skin from flaking.
Jake: Greenlee. Greenlee, Greenlee, Greenlee. Be good and don't obsess.
Greenlee: Ok. Knock 'em dead, or whatever. Sorry.
Jake: Bye.

[Door closes]

Leo: I forgot something.
Laura: What?
Leo: How unbelievably strong you are.
Laura: Yeah, I used to think so.
Leo: Yeah, well, think it again. Laura, you are an incredible person. And you have been through so much that I admire you and I'm -- and I'm proud of you and I'm glad that I'm with you. And I do love you, even if you really don't believe it. I want you to believe it.
Laura: I want to. I do. I do, Leo.

Adam: So, I realize that if I don't agree to what you're proposing, to your terms, that I will lose you and I will lose our daughter.
Liza: It has to be that way.
Adam: Yes, I see that. Ok. I agree to your terms. And I apologize from the bottom of my heart for any pain I've caused you, Liza. I will not lose my family, and I will not -- I cannot lose my love for you, now or ever. So I agree. I agree to your terms. I believe my love is strong enough to make it work.
Liza: Words without actions don't mean a thing.
Adam: I know.
Liza: I hope you do.
Adam: I want to be married to you forever.
Liza: If things don't change -- I mean, there's a lot that has to change, and if it doesn't --
Adam: It will.
Liza: If it doesn't, we will not be married in six months. You can count on that.

ON THE NEXT - - - ALL MY CHILDREN

Adam: Let Colby come home again. Let's be a family again.

Hayley: I haven't been totally honest with you.
Mateo: What's wrong?

Dixie: Stand over here, ok?
Tad: Why not?
Dixie: Because it's my turn.

[Dixie slaps David]
