ALL MY CHILDREN

SEPTEMBER 20, 1999

[Knocking}

Vanessa: David, let me in I'm not going away.
Erica: Tell her to leave.
David: That's easier said than done.
Vanessa: I know you're in there.
David: Wait. Mother, go away!
Vanessa: Shall I just let myself in?
Erica: Did we lock the door?
David: Well, wasn't it locked? Hold on! I'm coming!

[Erica hides under David's bed]
Vanessa: It's open, darling. I'm coming in.
David: You know, mother --
Vanessa: Oh, David.
David: It is just like you to come barging into a room uninvited.
Vanessa: Honestly. Calm down, darling. Once you hear why I came, you'll be able to stop whining. Now --

Mateo: So where do you see us going from here?
Hayley: Beats me.
Mateo: Listen, I know I screwed up. I asked you for so much, and you gave it to me, you know? You gave me all the time I needed to straighten things with Max. You agreed to postpone on having our baby. You shared our life with Raquel and Max, and I never paid attention how much it cost you. How do I make that up to you?
Hayley: I don't know.
Mateo: Do you want to get married?
Hayley: Are you serious? We're constantly -- you want to get married again?
Mateo: Yeah, I want to get married again. Look at us. I hate this. We don't believe in each other anymore.
Hayley: You know, when Raquel came to me and told me that she had slept with you, I believed her, and that was really stupid you know, I should have known better, but I guess I just -- you know, for so long, you had been believing the worst about me --
Mateo: I know.
Hayley: That I had slept with Ryan.
Mateo: I know, and I was wrong.
Hayley: We have to do more than say we were wrong, Mateo. We have to figure out why. Why couldn't you trust me?

Adam: Oh, my, oh, my, oh, my.

Adam's voice: Nobody outsmarts me.

Liza: Mission accomplished?

Alex: What's happened, Dr. Silbert?
Edmund: Dimitri's responding? The treatment's successful, isn't it?
Dr. Silbert: Well, I can tell you that the treatment's had some effect. Mr. Marick is no longer comatose.
Edmund: Thank God.
Alex: Is he oriented?
Dr. Silbert: Oh, yes. He's asking for you

Mateo: Ok, I admit it. I thought the worst. And I know you don't want an apology. You want an explanation, right? You see, it wasn't -- when you told me that I was acting like a macho caveman, all right, it wasn't because I couldn't handle the fact that some guy was kissing my wife, ok? Not entirely. Because I tell you what -- when I found out about the kiss, it just made too much sense to me.
Hayley: What do you mean, it made too much sense?
Mateo: Every time you told me you guys were just friends, it's like this alarm went off in my head.
Hayley: Mateo, we are just friends.
Mateo: You're not -- just stop it. Stop. You're not just friends. I accept the fact that you didn't sleep with him, all right? You didn't do that. But you're more than just friends, whether you want to admit it or not.
Hayley: Look, wherever you're going with this, I was never unfaithful to you.
Mateo: That's it? That's all you have to say on the subject of Ryan?
Hayley: That's all that matters.
Mateo: I don't think it is. You see, we have to try to find our way back to trusting each other, and that's going to be hard. But I don't have to trust him, not when he's trailing you like a little puppy dog picking up your scraps.
Hayley: This is what happens when we have a discussion. We get bogged down because you can't get past Ryan.
Mateo: Ok, fine. Then let's get past it. Let's talk about it. Let's talk about Ryan once and for all. Tell me the truth. And I'll try my damnedest to believe you. And I know there's something going on between you two. Is it true, or am I making it up?

David: I was right in the middle of something. Besides, I'm surprised you're not downstairs trying to crash Erica's dinner with Palmer.
Vanessa: Well, that's over. Though they did ask me to join them, I wouldn't even consider it.
David: Hmm.
Vanessa: You know why? It's too distressing -- I mean, watching my darling Palmer there trying to rescue Erica from another one of her business calamities. And I understand it's almost a regular occurrence, too.
David: Really? Well, I thought Erica had the golden touch.
Vanessa: Ha-ha! Hardly, darling. I mean, Erica's reputation as a good businesswoman is all smoke and mirrors.
David: Hmm. Well, did your darling Palmer tell you this?
Vanessa: Didn't have to, because the first time Erica went to Brazil, she left me in control of Enchantment.

[Vanessa laughs]

David: Well, I wasn't aware that your role was so extensive.
Vanessa: You realize I found such mismanagement there. I found such in-- colossal incompetence. It took me days to even begin to get to the root of it.
David: Ooh. Terrible.
Vanessa: And you know something? I think that perhaps that is the reason Erica resents me so much -- because I know that she is only just another pretty face.
David: Hmm. Oh, the injustice of the world.
Vanessa: Ok. Enough about Erica. Look, darling, I brought you something from my trip to New York. Call it a peace offering. Hmm.
David: Cufflinks.
Vanessa: Yeah.
David: Why, mother. A bribe.

Adam: Mission? What mission? I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about.
Liza: At the hospital. You bolted right out of there like you were ready to save the world.
Adam: Oh. Oh, that. I was -- it was a hostile takeover I'm pushing through. It didn't really amount to much, actually. A couple of million.
Liza: Perfect. You can concentrate on your millions. I'll concentrate on parenting Colby.
Adam: You and Jake will, you mean.
Liza: Colby's my responsibly -- mine. Yes, and Jake's. It's time that you accept that and our decisions.
Adam: Can't you see how it hurts me to be shut out like this? I love her every bit as much as Jake.
Liza: Adam, it's not love. You use this like it's some sort of excuse toe manipulative and underhanded. It's what kept you messing around in Hayley and Skye and Junior's life. Won't have it for Colby.
Adam: All right. Yeah, you win. From now on, I will try to do better. Now I want to go see her. I have an uncontrollable urge to play piggy with her toes.
Liza: Jake is with her, putting her in bed. So if you can give her a couple of minutes with him, quality time --
Alex: Dimitri?

[Dimitri mutters]

Hayley: Ryan is an attractive guy. And when I fell in love with you, I didn't suddenly become blind.
Mateo: I'm not talking about you glancing at some stranger or -- or that Oscar de la Hoya fantasy that you have.
Hayley: Look, whatever the attraction, I never slept with Ryan. And even if at some point I was tempted, I always honored my vows to you, and that is what's important. You find other women beautiful. That's human. You know, if I find another man attractive, that is human. I'd be lying if I said I didn't.
Mateo: Yeah. You'd just be lying.
Hayley: Look, I don't know what kind of confession you're expecting out of me.
Mateo: We agreed that the worst thing that happened to us is that we stopped trusting each other. You said we had to figure out why. That's what I'm trying to do.
Hayley: Well, it's not about Ryan anymore then. It was about Raquel. Mateo: We didn't talk about Raquel. We never talked about the feelings that she stirred up in us. We just dealt with it afterwards. We dealt with the fallout, and that was a mistake, and it was wrong. I don't want to make that mistake again. Look where we are. Look how much we've lost. What's the point of not telling the whole truth?
Hayley: You're right. I'll tell you the truth about Ryan and me.

David: They really are a work of art, mother.
Vanessa: Oh. Yes, they are, and, well, thanks to me, you have a fine eye for beautiful things. Ha!
David: Hmm. So does your new hubby know how you're spending his money?
Vanessa: Oh, Palmer is very generous with me. As a matter of fact, he has given me carte blanche.
David: So no wonder you're so panic-stricken.
Vanessa: I beg your pardon.
David: Well, that's why you've come here with a bribe, isn't it? You're afraid that I might reveal one of your nasty little secrets and louse up your love affair with Palmer's gold card.
Vanessa: Oh, nonsense. David please. Palmer really does understand me, darling. And there's nothing you could say that would actually change anything. So you might as well just behave yourself. And those things you said about me earlier downstairs -- really, David, it's getting to be just simply tiresome.
David: All right, mother. If it means so much to you, I won't call Palmer "Dad" again.
Vanessa: Oh.
David: Now go away. And take your bribe with you. Don't you know by now there's not enough money on this planet to make us friends?
Vanessa: Oh, honestly, David, David, David! What on earth is it going to take for you and I just to not be enemies?
David: All right. I don't know. Maybe if you join a convent, take a vow of silence and poverty, and pay penance for your sins for the rest of your life.
Vanessa: Do you remember what the bible says? "Let he who is without sin --" something, something, something. What?
David: Oh.
Vanessa: Well, you see, darling, how much fun it is when we laugh together?
David: I'm not laughing with you, Vanessa. I'm laughing at you. And if you knew anything about me, mother, you'd know that I hate cufflinks. They weigh down the hands. So luckily for you, you didn't have them engraved. You can give them to some other man who knows your nasty little secrets.
Vanessa: Oh.

[Dimitri moans]

Alex: How are you feeling?
Dimi aaaaaaaaaaa
Alex: You hungry?
Dimitri: For the sight of you. You know how much I love you.
Alex: Yeah, I know.
Dimitri: Will always love you.
Alex: I'll always love you.
Dimitri: Don't want you to suffer.
Alex: I'm not suffering.
Dimitri: It's not fair.
Edmund: It's a miracle is what it is.
Dimitri: No.
Edmund: I got to tell you, Bro, the first time I saw you, it was kind of crazy. But now -- she's a genius, your wife.
Dimitri: My wife.
Edmund: Yeah. You look so much better.
Alex: Well, we still have a ways to go.
Edmund: Fine. Fine. Whatever. Just -- welcome back.
Dimitri: Alex, I need to talk to Edmund alone.

Vanessa: Oh, David.
David: Ahem. Ahem. Ahem. Vanessa: What, do you want them after all, darling?
David: No, I don't want them. I want you and your bribe out of my room.
Vanessa: I told you this was a peace offering, David.
David: Yeah? Well, then piece these words together -- get out.
Vanessa: Don't -- we're not through talking. Please, so much has changed now.
David: You're wasting your time, Vanessa. Needling you in front of Palmer brings me great joy. And now that I know how much you detest it, it's going to be irresistible.
Vanessa: No, no, David -- oh!

David: Are you ok?
Erica: Yes, I'm ok.
David: Shh, shh, shh, shh.

Adam: Is Colby asleep?
Jake: Yeah. She went right down. Just so you know, the transfer of stem cells took place as planned.
Adam: I see. Nothing untoward happened? It was a match?
Jake: Yeah. Colby's cells were compatible with Dimitri's. So if he recovers from this horrible disease, he'll have her to thank.
Adam: I am very happy to hear that.

[Colby cries]

Adam: Oh. You said she was asleep.
Jake: She was.
Liza: No, no. I'll get it. She's just teething.
Adam: Well, may I see you out, Jake?
Jake: Yeah, in a minute. I first have something I want to tell you.
Adam: About the procedure?
Jake: No. I want to lay down some ground rules.

Hayley: Over the past couple of months, Ryan and I have grown closer because he makes me feel good and he tells me I'm wonderful even when I feel like a piece of crud and because he tries his hardest always to get me to laugh, and he has more than once dried my tears.
Mateo: And I haven't.
Hayley: Not lately. And you can be the most wonderful man in the world, and I know that better than anyone, but let's just face the reality. The past year, I have been in your way.
Mateo: In the way of what?
Hayley: You being a father to your son. You know, and I wanted so much to help out. I tried really hard, but eventually I caught on because I'm dumb. But I'm not that dumb. And I knew that no matter what I did, it wasn't good enough.
Mateo: You know, what's crazy is that throughout the whole thing, I just tried to fix everything. I tried to make everybody happy, and obviously I couldn't.
Hayley: Well, you became very angry, Mateo. And I stopped seeing you as the man that I had married, and so I stopped trusting you. And I got scared and I moved out and I questioned my sobriety and I kissed Ryan. And then you found out, and you stopped trusting me.
Mateo: I know. My whole life became about taking care of my son.
Hayley: I don't blame your son. He deserves the best. I just don't think that you and I handled it the best possible way.
Mateo: I know, but it can be different now, you know? We can fix this. I mean, it's possible to start over again, isn't it? I want us to try.

Dimitri: Ahem. I know you're angry.
Edmund: Not anymore.
Dimitri: You should be. I've kept things from you.
Edmund: Hey, Dimi, you were faced with -- who knows how I'd react, you know, if I thought I was going to lose everything.
Dimitri: Hey. You'd be loving.
Edmund: Yeah, well, I won that kinder, gentler contest a long time ago.
Dimitri: You take care of her.
Edmund: Of Alex? Hey, you know, she's incredible. She's brilliant, and she's honorable, by the way. She kept your promise. I found out. She didn't break it.
Dimitri: She loves me.
Edmund: Yeah, well, you're a lucky man.
Dimitri: Promise me. This will be hard for her.
Edmund: Dimitri, I know how tough this is, ok? But you have all of us here -- all of us. You know what I did with the west wing? I turned it into an on-site hospital. You say the word and you're home the same day.
Dimitri: And then what?
Edmund: And then you recover.
Dimitri: You think so?
Edmund: I know it. Hey, it's the only acceptable option if you're a Marick.
Dimitri: Yes. Promise me you will take care of her.
Edmund: Dimitri, we'll all take care of her, ok? We all will. You should see her with Gillian. I mean, the two of them, they're a pair. They share everything. She wants to see you.
Dimitri: No.
Edmund: Dimi, she needs you. She loves you.
Dimitri: Edmund, no. No, not like this. Not like this. Please.
Edmund: Ok, shh. Shh. Just breathe. Take it easy, ok? Everybody's going to come in and yell at me, all right? Easy. It's ok. That's probably your plan, right? To get me thrown out of here.
Dimitri: I love you.
Edmund: I love you too, Bro.
Dimitri: You tell Gillian I am sorry. I love her.
Edmund: Ok. Ok. You can tell her yourself, all right? Whenever you're ready.
Dimitri: And Eugenia. Tell her toujours, l'amour.
Edmund: No, you're going to do that. Not with my accent.
Dimitri: Take care of her.
Edmund: Ok. Ok. Ok. Listen. I will. I promise. Ok?
Dimitri: Alex!
Edmund: All right, I'll get her, ok? I'll get her, ok? You just rest easy. Dimitri, I'll see you tomorrow, ok? Ok? I'll see you. See you tomorrow, ok.
Dimitri: Hey, Edmund. Maddie. Love too much for me.
Edmund: I can't help but spoil her. You know, you should see her these days. She's so -- she's so cute.
Dimitri: Set yourself free. She wants that. Maria.
Edmund: You get some rest.

Erica: Your mother came this close, you know, to stumbling on this shoe.
David: Oh, so who cares if she did? I mean, it's not as if we're afraid of Vanessa.
Erica: Oh, but your mother has some nerve, you know?
David: Uh-huh. Erica: "Incompetence" and "mismanagement." I mean, I really wanted to put my teeth marks on her ankle.
David: Hmm. Should we call the world wrestling federation?
Erica: All in good time. I tell you, though, it is a serious problem. We can't go public.
David: Well, I don't know what we're going to do about this, I mean, with Palmer and Vanessa right down the hall.
Erica: I know. I'm worried about it, too. Exactly. I mean, even when I call the switchboard, I'm afraid that Vanessa or Palmer is going to overhear. I've been thinking. We need to have code names.
David: You ally like this intrigue, don't you?
Erica: Well --
David: Oh, you would have been a great courtesan back in the Renaissance. I can see you in Venice, riding a gondola at midnight with a veil over your face.
Erica: Oh, this sounds like one of my father's movies. Do you know it? "La Gondola di Amore."
David: Well, I didn't know your father made an Italian film.
Erica: Yes, he did.
Anyway, it's about a princess and a gondolier.
Those can be our code names. I'll be the Principessa, and you will be Vittorio, the lowly gondolier.
David: Oh. Well, I guess that's the way it is in your fantasies. You're my superior, huh?
Erica: No.

Adam: Jake, we've been through all of this over the past few months. Your position in Colby's life is secure.
Jake: Oh, I know that. No, what's changing is your position in Colby's life. You're out.
Adam: I'm out? I think what's happened today has clouded your judgment.
Jake: No, what happened today cleared up my thinking. You're just going to -- you're going to throw your weight around whenever you want your way. And as far as Colby's concerned, I'm not going to deal with any more. So that's it. You're out. If Liza wants to hear what you have to say, that's up to her. But l the decision making -- you're out of it.
Adam: Stop saying I'm out --
Jake: Liza and I will make all the decisions -- education decisions, medical decisions. I don't care. If she gets a tricycle, I will teach her how to ride it.
Adam: You're out of your bloody mind.
Jake: I just want to be very clear with you that you're not her father, you're not her adoptive father or -- I don't know -- however you see yourself in her life.
Adam: Who do you think you're talking to?
Jake: I know exactly who I'm talking to, which is why I want no misunderstanding here. From now on, the situation has changed.
Adam: No, you don't order me about, not in my own house.
Liza: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I don't want any of this. Jake, would you please go.
Jake: All right. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. But he crossed the line.
Adam: You can make all the ultimatums you want, my friend. That girl is living under my roof and I will love her and she will learn to love me.
Jake: She's a very smart girl. She'll come to realize the kind of person you are, which the rest of your children already have.
Liza: Ahem.

[Door closes]

Adam: He doesn't have any idea who he's dealing with. I can squash him like a bug. One phone call, I could have his taxes audited back to his first paper route. And I could have him blacklisted from every medical facility on the continent.
Liza: Do you honestly think by hurting Jake you're going to get Colby to love you more?
Adam: You're taking his side, aren't you? You didn't hear the things he said to me.
Liza: No, I didn't. But I can most assuredly tell you that I would probably agree.
Adam: You did hear him say that I was out of Colby's life. The only connection I have with her is the fact that I'm your husband.
Liza: And you know what? That's not exactly a permanent position.
Adam: He's got you on his side, doesn't he? I do these things because I care about her as if she were my own child. You said you wished I were her father.
Liza: Adam, you can be as possessive as you want. You can act like a thug and a bully, but you are never going to take away the fact that Colby is Jake's child.

Hayley: How can we start from ground zero? We'll just screw it up again.
Mateo: Not if we figure out what we did wrong.
Hayley: Well, it wasn't Ryan. He wasn't the problem. And, you know, I can't just, like, kick him out of my life. Not now. Do you think you can accept that?
Mateo: What do you think?
Hayley: I --
Mateo: What? Talk to me.
Hayley: I think that I have to get back to being able to look at you like the man I loved and who loved me.
Mateo: I'm still that guy. I'm the same man. No matter what's happened, I'm him.
Hayley: Do you remember that night that you kicked me out of the nightclub? You told me to get out, and I wouldn't budge. So you reached behind the bar and you poured me a big glass of vodka and you pushed it at me and you dared me to drink it. You looked so ugly and hateful. And no matter how hard I try, when I look at you, that is the face I see.

David: Wait a minute. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. I want to know how this movie ends. Does the Principessa and Vittorio -- do they ride off on his gondola together?
Erica: No, not exactly. Her husband finds out and stuffs Vittorio in a sack and drowns him in a canal.
David: Oh. Well, maybe, then we'd better stop.
Erica: No, no. It's a very happy ending anyway.
David: With him drowned in a sack?
Erica: Because, you see, she takes poisoned wine and she dies and then they meet in heaven and they make love for all time.
David: Oh. Now that sounds like heaven.
Erica: Well, Vittorio?
David: I had a good night's sleep. I think I'm up for it.

[Adam dreaming……]

Liza: Oh, of course, you can take her. You're her real father.
Adam: Wait a minute. Where is he taking her?
Jake: It's the Martin family annual apple-picking contest.
Liza: Oh, I cannot tell you how happy I am that she's being raised by such a loving and all-American Martin family.
Jake: Mm-hmm.
Adam: Don't I have any say in this?
Jake: I'm going to take her to the very top of the ladder so she can pick apples off the highest branches.
Liza: Did you hear that?
Adam: No!
Liza: Oh. And, you know, I trust you cause you're her real father.
Adam: What are you saying? You can't take the baby to the top of a ladder. Colby.
Colby?
Colby!
Colby?
Jake: I'm so happy you're my daughter, Colby Martin.
Liza: Colby Martin. Well, that sounds just right, doesn't it?
Adam: No, that's not right. She's a Chandler. Her name is Colby Chandler. She is a Chandler. She's my daughter. Her name is Chandler!

Mateo: Listen, pouring you that drink was the worst thing I've ever done. And I can't take it back. I wish I could. And I'll have to live with that. And I just hope that someday you can forgive me.
Hayley: I hope I can, too.
Mateo: Because, you know, if -- if this were to keep us apart forever, I couldn't stand that.
Hayley: Neither could I, but it hurts too much to be with you right n. And it makes me real thirsty.
Mateo: I know we can fix this if we just try, and I want to try.
Hayley: I think I've done all I can do for today because I'm really tired. I just want to go home.
Mateo: Yeah? Where's that?
Hayley: Trevor and Janet's, for now.
Mateo: Ok. Hey.

Dimitri: Mmm, mmm.
Alex: I thought you were asleep.
Dimitri: Mmm.
Alex: Edmund just left.
Dimitri: You take care of him, Alex.
Alex: I think I have enough on my plate taking care of you, thank you very much.
Dimitri: He's been sad man long time.
Alex: I know.
Dimitri: You -- so lovely.
Alex: No. I haven't slept in a week.
Dimitri: Don't contradict a sick man.
Alex: Ok. No, sir.
Dimitri: So lovely. You tell me about the stream.
Alex: Oh. Where I used to go with my father.
Dimitri: Yeah.
Alex: Again. Well, it was most beautiful in the springtime when there were daffodils everywhere, masses of them, all over the banks. It was so beautiful. My father really loved them. And the little blue ones -- I forget what they're called. The tiny ones. They grow right down by the water's edge. And sometimes I'd find a frog, and I'd slip him in my pocket and take him home to scare mom. And there'd be soft stones that I'd dip in the water. I'd watch them change color. And the fish would poke their heads up, and they'd catch a breath of air.

Alex: I love you.
